LATEST HOBBY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Testors official discontinuing Model Master.

https://www.facebook.com/testorscorp/posts/10163143980115262

As a manufacturer of paint products, we have a long history of producing hobby kits and supplies. To that end, we are evolving our strategy to focus more keenly on Testors, our flagship brand and are discontinuing our Pactra, Aztek, and Model Master Brands as the demand for these products continues to decline.

We will continue to support the hobby market with a robust line of aerosols, brush paints, tools, and accessories and always looking for opportunities to innovate in these categories. Please keep in mind that we do have limited quantities available and hobby shops will have access to that inventory.

From Tania:

Just listening to one of your podcasts on the way to work, and you were quoting prices from HLJ for various kits. HLJ is a great source, and I love their business, but they are not the prices you should be basing comments on for Chinese/HKG or European kits (Meng, Dragon, Trumpeter, Eduard etc.) These all attract a “protection tax” (or equivalent) in Japan, so are priced highly compared to other sources. For non-Japanese kits, I recommend the pricing from Hobbyeasy in Hong Kong (www.hobbyeasy.com) Their prices will be more reflective of “free market” prices. I have visited them several times in HKG and like HLJ they are an enthusiast run business, with sharp prices and reasonable shipping costs.

A pricing example for the Meng WASP Jeep kit. HLJ are CAD$47.37, and Hobbyeasy HK$163 which converts to CAD$27.89, so it’s a huge difference.

I’m a pilot with Air NZ, so I get to visit model shops in lots of countries. Whilst Japan and Hong Kong are just streets ahead for the number and quality of shops, I’ve found Vancouver BC to be one of the best non-Asian countries for great model shops. Magic Box hobbies is a treasure and whilst prices are higher than in Asia, the selection is right up there.

Cheers for now from a rainy Sydney Australia, and I’ll check you guys out on FB.

Tania

Anthony is under the weather this week so I’m doing the show solo.

I just received word that Derek Pennington has passed away. Derek was the founder of IPMS Toronto and a Great ambassador for the hobby. Thru the 60,70, and 80. He Started the Torcan Model contest, and also along with Bernie Hengst, the show in Ajax. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayer go out to his family.

Here’s a few pics of an Australian El Alamein M3 Stuart I did a little while ago since you mentioned wanting some pics. I’m waiting for some AK water effects to come in to finish an F4U Corsair I’m working on. The planes done, I just need to finish the base.

From: Robert Pearlman Hi fella’s,

My name is Rob and I’m a 35 y/o modeller from Victoria BC. I love your show, you’ve really managed to get some great interviewees so far. I wonder if you could try and get Mike Rinaldi? He’s a super interesting guy and I’m sure has all sorts of interesting things to say.R

I have one piece of constructive criticism for you if that is OK. I notice that sometimes you both talk over each other and sometimes you talk over your guests. This can make the show distracting to listen to sometimes. If you worked on this a touch I’m sure it would kick your podcast up a notch.

Thanks very much for your time and have a great week!

Ray Davis

G’day Stuart and Anthony, I hope that both you and your families are well

I just wanted to pass on my compliments to you both on the great interview that you did with  fellow Sydney sider, Brett Green

I always look forward to hearing what he has to say about the hobby and any technique tips that he may have.

As always, I look forward to what you guys have to talk about on your show.

Take care of yourselves and happy modelling to you both.

With Respect and Kindest Regards,

Your mate, Ray

AMS – Advanced Modeller’s Syndrome

Tony Jacobs talks about our reluctance to try new things.

It used to be that we could try and fail in the privacy and secrecy of our own hobby rooms but with social media the benefits of trying and failing have become something some of us don’t seem willing to do. I looked at a couple of my builds over the last 10-20 years and realized that even just on the subject of weathering, my skills have evolved hugely. I’ve attached some pics numbered in chronological order to illustrate what I mean.

The Tiger was the first time I tried ‘weathering armour’. It’s got a toy-like uniform paint finish, near rusted-through tracks, and weird yellow ‘dust’. Through a succession of trial and error learning with pigments, washes, paint finish variation and lots of other experiments I went from that through Stügs with ‘designer mud’; to Shermans with improving paint, dirt and mud but strangely perfect markings (and figures with that ‘1000 yard stare’… I still hate figures); to Matildas where it’s starting to come together; to my one and only show medal winner… the Uboat.

The Matilda or the Uboat would never have happened if I hadn’t first produced the weird Tiger. But not trying new ideas that might result in weird tigers means that people will never improve their skills. My first piece of advice when I’m asked about things like weathering is ‘just try it out’. It’s the start of a never ending process of learning, of ever improving builds, and a whole lot of fu.

I am writing to let you know how much I enjoyed your interview with Aaron Skinner.  I found it fascinating. I have watched many of his YouTube videos and found the story of his entry into the professional modelling world very interesting indeed.

I am also looking forward to Anthony’s upcoming series on Resin kit building.  I have a few resin kits of ships from the Babylon 5 TV show. They have been hibernating in my stash for a few years now and I haven’t worked up the nerve to tackle one.  Hopefully, I will pick up a few tips and summon up the courage to have a go.

As you guys christened Julian’s fan group “Julian’s Jewels”  I would like to propose the name “Anthony’s Acolytes” for the followers of the upcoming “In-Depth Report”.  My first thought was “Goodman’s Groupies” but after some reflection, I thought that sounded a trifle seedy.
