Happy New Year!

Trevor Jones writes

I am sending you a picture of my bench with the Extra Special Super Gargantuan Giveaway items sitting on it, as you can see I have some small 1/48 scale figures I am in the process of painting for my ON 30 model railroad layout, but these will come in handy when I start on Bandai’s Alto Blue Kit, my first Gundam. Thanks again and I really enjoy the podcast. I am slowly convincing my model railroad friends that some of the techniques and products the plastic model world has made model railroading easier and vice versa.

Special Guest Host:  Kerry Traynor of IPMS Canada

Kerry started modelling as a young lad and like most modellers, set the hobby aside during secondary school and college. He got back to the hobby after college and has enjoyed it ever since. His primary interest lays in 1/48 post-WW2 aircraft, but oddly, he’s been building 1/48 and 1/32 scale WW2 aircraft and 1/35 modern armour of late.

He has been a member of IPMS Canada for almost 40 years, as well as a member of the chapters in Calgary, Ottawa and of course, here in London. He believes in taking an active role in the Chapter and has served as president of the London chapter a couple of times and chaired the South-Western Ontario Scale Model Expo committee on two occasions. He currently serves on the IPMS Canada Executive as the Chapter and Member Liaison. Prior to retiring in 2018, Kerry was a Professor in the Architectural Technology program at Fanshawe College for 29 years.

SMP’s Super Model Contest 2020 Gallery

From the Judge:

Winners and notable entries in two categories. I split them into two categories and split the prizes for those categories. The Execution will get the Baby Crab and the Wow will get the Lamborghini. The execution of concept is judged by how well the modeller brought a concept to life.  Wow is simply how impressive the model was on the screen.

Execution of Concept:

Brian McGinnis – 1/48 Fokker DR.1

Good build and figures in a vignette, nicely done all around.

Will S. – 1/100 Gundam Barbatos

Great work with posing and very subtle lighting.

Winner of the MHM Baby Space Crab:

Andrew Hilton-Wigg – 1/100 Gundam RX-78-2S

Desert scheme on the typically colourful RX-78. Subtle shading and appropriate weathering.  This is a concept well-realized and looks great.

Wow, that’s Impressive:

Rodolfo Rupoli – Kalamity Gorilla mech

Cool to see a Kalamity product, and this is probably the best paint and weathering in the contest. Grime and weathering is very convincing.

Al Quint. – 1/18 Hydro-Vee powerboat

Great subject, very clean work. More convincing painting on the interior would put this on the trophy table.

Michael Canella – 1/220 Gundam Teifsturmer Deep Striker

Wow, that’s one hell of a night light. Looks like an excellent build and very well lit. The photography is spot-on for exposure showing the bright lights but mostly not overexposing the subject.

Winner of the 1/24 Aoshima Lamborghini Aventador

Rick Reinert – 1/32 Roland

Impressive work, rigging looks fantastic, the color tones for the wood, leather and engine are great.  Lozenge decals and details like turnbuckles for rigging are excellent work.

A fun and quick build. This is the first 1:144 build I have done and I’m amazed at how tiny it all is. Kept mixing up way too much paint for the size, being used to 1:72 and 1:48.

I have a number of these 1:144 in the stash. Glad they are there for a quick mojo booster.

Steve Bolton writes:

Anthony, I have this Aliens APC resin kit. Never done resin before. Have you any advice on cutting off the bottom block? I don’t know if it’s moulded that way or was glued on to keep body shape? Either way, a bit of poking with a knife doesn’t reveal any way forward. Any advice here mate? I have no belt sanders and the super sanding blocks won’t help until after it’s gone.

Another technique piece would be on masking, including which products work best.  I have some Vallejo mask liquid and it simply is worthless.  3M Blue tape, so so. Tamiya 2mm flexible tape – OMG!  The stuff is really nice.  But am I applying it and cutting it properly?  Especially on the old Hasegawa 1/72 H8K Emily that has the glass frames molded on the inside and the outside is smooth?  I’ve got pics, I’m getting better but … this baby won’t be winning any contests.

Jay asks

Hi Stuart. I am behind on my listening and just learned that Anthony is cutting back his time.

Could you pass a question along to him, please?

“Which of the Macross plane model kits are the best as far as detail and quality??”

Thank you for your dedication to our hobby and the work you put into SMP!!

Anthony’s reply

Hi Jay, Anthony here. You can not go wrong with a 1/72 or 1/48 VF-1 kit from Hasegawa, for quality or price! There’s also very nice kits from Bandai who maintain very high-quality kits of the more current series! Hope you enjoy it!

Wayne Peters

Hi guys, just been listening to Ep 52. Re the new release Italeri 1/9 German Infantryman, I’m pretty sure this is a re-pop of the old Esci kit (#6001) which I have somewhere in my stash!

And re the HobbyBoss XM706E2, they also did an M706 (kit # 82148 from 2008) and Verlinden did an XM76E2 way back in 1988 (kit # 369).

Frank Ramsay

First I want to say I’m going to miss hearing Anthony every episode, I think he’s been a great co-host.  But I completely understand life comes first.   And I’m glad he will still be involved doing the interviews.

I was about to type up a big discussion on model railroad scales but decided it wasn’t really that interesting.  So all I’ll say on the subject is that you mentioned at least one of the odder scales (I think it was On30) where the train is a different scale than the track and you wondered why that was.  The reason these exist is because not every actual railroad uses the same distance between rails and if you want an accurate scale model railroad of such a railway then you need these odd scales.

You also asked us to write about our thoughts on constant-scale modeling.  For me, I’m “sort of” a constant-scale modeller in that I have a specific scale for each type of subject:  Aircraft (early flight) I do in 1:32, Military Vehicles of all types are 1:35, Maschinen Krieger is 1:20,  Gunpla is Master Grade (aka 1:100).
