111 The One with Eric Russo, CWT
Episode 111: Show Notes
I am sure I have shared with the Nation! before that I love hearing from people who listen to the Scaling UP! H2O podcast.
At last year's AWT Convention and Expo, I met Eric Russo. Eric told me that he absolutely loved the Scaling UP! H2O podcast. He went on to say it was the perfect format for a water treater because we drive so much. What else are you going to do during "windshield" time?
Eric graciously shared with me some ideas he had about guests and topics. We also started to get to know each other during that encounter. So, I invited him to come on Scaling UP! H2O. You will soon learn why I am so impressed with Eric.
Join me as I interview, Eric Russo, CWT.
More about Eric Russo:
Eric Russo is the New England Area Manager for Suez. He has been working in the water treatment industry since 2012 after earning a BS in Chemical Engineering. Eric obtained his Certified Water Technologist designation in 2017 and most recently completed his MBA in Marketing in 2018. He takes a process-oriented view of how value is delivered to the customer and continuously improves upon internal systems to consistently and more efficiently achieve the desired result. Eric has worked with teams to design and implement a company-wide cloud-based CRM/ERP solution.

Pinks and Blues: Questions From the Nation!, Boiler Surging
Nation! Once again, we have a show because one of the members of The Scaling UP! Nation! gave us a topic to talk about. Adam Sites, CWT sent us a voicemail about boiler surging. His frustration was that the water treater always gets blamed. And he's right, we do.
When in doubt, blame the water treater is a phrase that rings true to most of us. However, as much fun as it is to joke about this. I do think we share in the problem of our customers not understanding what it is that we do. As a group, water treaters don't explain what it is that they do. That leaves our talents to be explained as mystic voodoo and that leads to customers making bad choices when we are not onsite.
Join me as I try to answer Adam's inquiry to the best of my ability. There is no substitution for being there. Since I am not there, I share with you some of my experiences that I have had in dealing with this issue.

109 The One with Super Villain Royalty, Brian Fisk
Episode 109: Show Notes
Nation! You have heard me speak on this show previously about going to trade association functions to expand your knowledge level. Going to these events is also a great way to expand your network. I love meeting new water treaters. By this, I mean new to the industry water treaters and new to me water treaters. We, as water treaters, all have a story in us, and I love to hear it!
Taking my advice, I went to the ASHRAE trade show this past January. It was huge! You can hear all about it on episode 73. When you listen to this episode, you hear me interview people I already know and people I just met. Truthfully, I didn't expect to find some of the people I already knew at that trade show.
People like Gary Garcia and Colin Frayne of episodes 101 and 102. I think this goes to show when you do try to expand your network, you will surprisingly find people you know in places you don't expect.
One of the new people I met was Brian Fisk. Brian struck me as an enthusiastic water treater. And... He is a fan of Scaling UP! H2O. How could I not immediately like him? As we spoke at the ASHRAE show, it was clear we had a lot in common and he had some great stuff to share. Why not have him share it on the world's favorite industrial water treatment podcast?
Please enjoy my interview with Brian Fisk.

107 Day 5 Of Industrial Water Week (Careers)
Episode 107 (Day 5): Show Notes
Industrial Water Week, Day 5: Careers
It's hard to believe, we are on our last days of celebrating Industrial Water Week. If you haven't done anything to celebrate, it's not too late. We have heard from people who are having special parties to celebrate. Here, we went out for tacos. Because when you think of water treatment, you think of tacos, right? Well, it was fun. So, however, you choose to celebrate, we hope that this podcast has been part of your celebratory activities.
On this Careers Friday, we are back at the AWT Convention talking to more Scaling UP! Nation! Members: I know you have heard me say before, I love my job. I can't imagine doing anything else. So, what better way to wrap up the week than to reflect on being an Industrial Water Treater.

107 Day 4 Of Industrial Water Week (Wastewater)
Episode 107 (Day 4): Show Notes
Industrial Water Week, Day 4: Wastewater
It's a dirty job, but someone must do it. That someone is us, the Industrial Water Treater.
Today we are celebrating Wastewater Thursday. Wastewater is all about taking something out of our discharge water that came from our process. Most municipal plants require that the water they receive has a minimum water quality so that it will not harm their biological population. It's all about the "bugs."
A few months back we did 2 shows devoted to wastewater with our guest, Kevin Kope- episodes 78 and 79. Many water treaters have told me what a helpful resource these shows are. Feel free to incorporate re-listening to them during your celebration today.
In the meantime, we are back at the AWT convention here from Scaling UP! Nation Members.

107 Day 3 Of Industrial Water Week (Cooling)
Episode 107 (Day 3): Show Notes
Happy Industrial Water Week everyone! Today, Day 3, of our weeklong holiday is all about Cooling. Yesterday was about boilers. Since we put heat (BTU's) into something, today we have to cool it down. We are taking BTU's out of something. In most processes, heat is a byproduct that slows the process down. The more widgets a machine makes, the hotter that machine gets. The hotter the machine gets, the fewer widgets that machine can make. And that's where we come in.
Getting heat out of our process and sending it to a place we don't care about it is key to our job. The less heat we have, the more widgets we can make. That means the widget factory can be more profitable. Our job as an industrial water treater is to make that process as efficient as it possibly can be. After all, the heat transfer medium they are using is the lifeblood of the whole operation.
As we celebrate Cooling Wednesday, we are back at the AWT conference. Join me as I continue to interview fellow Scaling UP! Nation! Members and take you inside the conference.

Happy Industrial Water Week Scaling UP! Nation!
We are celebrating Day 2 of Industrial Water Week. Day 2 is all about boilers. One of the ways I like to think about our job is that we are heat transfer, efficiency managers. That means we take heat from one place and transfer it to another as cost-effectively as possible. When we talk about boilers, we are putting heat into the system, so that heat can do some work. This work might be to power something, or it could just be to heat something. Either way, the steam boiler is the "workhorse" of our modern-day world.
On this special holiday episode, we are back at the Association of Water Technologies Annual Convention. Where we talk a bit about steam boilers and chat with friends of our show.
Happy Day 2 of Industrial Water Week.

107 Day 1 Of Industrial Water Week (Pretreatment)
Episode 107: Show Notes
Industrial Water Week, Day 1: Pretreatment
Happy Industrial Water Week Nation! We have an entire week that is devoted just for us, the Industrial Water Treater. Last year, a friend of the show, James McDonald launched this holiday to help us celebrate how awesome our job is. Industrial Water Week is always the first full week in October.
Here is what we celebrate:
There is just so much to do in our job, our holiday requires more than just one day to celebrate. We get a whole week!
Today we celebrate pretreatment. Pretreatment is anything that we do to improve water quality to make it more acceptable for a specific end use. That means filters, water softeners, dealkalizers, and the list goes on. Today, as we celebrate industrial water week, think of all the things we use in our pretreatment processes.
To help us celebrate this awesome holiday week, we took our recording gear to the Association of Water Technologies Annual Convention to take you right into the action. Please enjoy.

106 The One with the Agnostic Equipment Guy
Episode 106: Show Notes
Nation! I know your favorite thing in the water treatment industry is the equipment we use. Well, maybe not... But it is something that we must use to run our programs when we are not there. Many of us are loyal to a particular brand and model of equipment. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you know what your options are outside of your "comfort zone." I have found by working with other water treaters that many of us learn how one thing works, get comfortable with it and stop. That is not ok. We have to keep apprised of what equipment is out there to make our systems better.
Our guest today is Blaine Nagao of H2Tronics. Blaine is a longtime friend and colleague of mine. We met through the Association of Water Technologies. Specifically, when he would do the equipment training portion at technical training. I still remember things I learned from him in the class. Blaine agreed to come on the show and talk with us about a few things we should consider when it comes to equipment.
Please get ready to enjoy my interview with Blaine Nagao.
