075 The One that's All About Corrosion Coupons

    Episode 75: Show Notes

If you are an industrial water treater, most likely you have seen a corrosion coupon at some point. However, if you haven't, today's episode will teach you all about them. I remember a time when I placed an ad for my corrosion coupon lab in an industry magazine. After we created the layout for the ad, the sales rep called me to tell me I forgot the "coupon" in my graphic. The graphic I created featured 3 corrosion coupons. He wanted to know what discount (coupon) I was going to offer people who used my corrosion coupon lab. I thought that was funny. It also gave me the prospective that corrosion coupons tell you how much metal is being taken off of the system. Finding this information out quickly can save you a ton of money on your heat transfer equipment. So maybe the sales rep was on to something.

Corrosion coupons are very inexpensive ways that you can measure metal lose in a system you are treating for corrosion protection. Because they are inexpensive and easy to use, you can use them to pro-activity make a change in your program based on their results. In my career, I have analyzed 1000's of corrosion coupons. Do anything enough, and you get pretty good at it. Scaling UP! H2O has received a large amount of questions around corrosion coupons. I normally answer a few questions from the audience on Pinks and Blues episodes. Since there were so many corrosion coupon questions, I decided to make it an entire show on everything you ever wanted to know about corrosion coupons. Join me as I talk about corrosion coupons from A(l) to Z(n).

  • 072 The One About LEAN

If you have ever been in a manufacturing facility, you've probably seen something from the LEAN process, even if you didn't recognize it. LEAN is mostly thought of at a "streamlining" system used in the world of manufacturing. And this is how I thought of it.

Our guest today is Jason Burt of EHIIP Consulting. And I know what you are thinking, Why are we talking about LEAN, we are water treaters? And that's where I was too, until; I learned more about LEAN. LEAN is a problem-solving tool that can be used for anything, not just manufacturing. Since it originated in manufacturing, that's what it is always associated with. Join me as I lean more about the LEAN process and get tips from Jason on how to make ones I've already implemented better.

Jason Burt works with business leaders to take a holistic view of their company and use the lean manufacturing strategy developed by Toyota to drive growth, profitability, quality, and any key performance indicators (KPIs) that a company needs to succeed.

Jason had the amazing opportunity to receive coaching and mentorship from Toyota on lean principles for over 19 years, and has continued to learn as a business owner. His career has progressed through many functional areas; operations management, supply management, distribution, logistics, dealerships, engineering, and quality in both commercial and healthcare markets while working for large organizations. Making 2019 a great year!

On today's Pinks and Blues episode we will be answering the following questions:

Q: How do I make 2019 better than 2018? What am I not seeing that can help me do that?

Q: Did you celebrate your accomplishments of last year?

Q: Did you discover why you were success on your accomplishments and why you were not on what you did not accomplish?

The reason this works so well for me is because

1.) Who doesn't like to be recognized for their accomplishments and you should recognize yourself for creating a goal, coming up with a plan, working the plan and finally completing it.

        • With everything that goes on day to day, you did it! You got it done and that needs to be celebrated. In general, we don't celebrate ourselves enough.

2.) Life will tell you what will work and what will not work. SO, the questions is: are you listening?

        • Things that worked well, should be repeated- because they worked.
        • Things that didn't work well need to be recrafted so that you can find out how to make them work using the reason they didn't work as a rebuilding point.

I mention the planning tool SMART to help define your goals. If you missed that go back to my first show this year, scaling uph2o.com/67 to list to that.

However SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound and I have a downloadable chart to help you with this at scalinguph2o.com/smart.

Q: Trace one of my goals is to read more, can you please share your recommended reading list?

Q: When it comes to goal setting, I never get anything completed that I set out to. My job keeps me so busy that I have given up trying to even create goals. I'm stuck , I'm frustrated... What should I do?

        • Don't feel alone.
        • We have all been there, if someone tells you they have never felt that same way, they are lying.
        • Don't give up!

    - Don't give up on making yourself better and happier.

    - When you accomplish things, you deem valuable in your life, your life gets better.

    - Your self-esteem increases, your confidence increase, your knowledge increases.

    - This helps all of your relationships, including the one with yourself.

All this sounds great. Right? so what do you do with all of that I just said?

Let me give you some handles for that.

No matter what type of business you are in, we all share one universal issue: How do we find the "Right People" to hire? For those of you that don't know, I define" Right People" as people who enhance our culture. I speak about this in more detail in episodes 44 and 45.

Finding new "Right People" is an issue we are currently faced with at my company, Blackmore Enterprises, Inc. The good news is we are growing, the bad news is we are having issues with finding the "Right People" to help us fulfill our company's mission. So, what do you do to find these "Right People?" We have tried job boards, social media, word of mouth and colleges.

That being said, we have never tried using a company that specializes in finding talent to go out and find these "Right People" for us.

Being curious about this possible avenue, I decided to interview a "headhunter" on the podcast. Many have written in asking questions about finding new talent so I figured why not the Scaling UP! Nation! learn along with me. Please enjoy my interview with Chase Squires.

    Each of these organizations have:

Publications, newsletters, committees you can join and certifications you can aspire to get

What can you get out of one of these organization to help you make the water treatment industry better?

    Goal setting:
        • Process for setting goals: (not resolutions)
        • Celebrate accomplishments you made last year
        • Revisit how you accomplished those tasks:
        • What did you learn?
        • What would you do better if you did it again (what advice would you give someone)?
        • What do you want to accomplish this year?
        • Maybe its one large item or 5 small ones
        • SMART it!

    S-M-A-R-T

Specific: State specifically what you want to accomplish. A specific goal is distinct and defined. Who is involved? What do I want to accomplish? Where will it be done? Why am I doing this (reasons and purpose?) Which constraints and/or requirements do I have?

Measurable: How will you demonstrate and evaluate the extent to which the goal has been set? How will it start and when will you know it is finished? What are the tasks involved with this goal? How much, how many, how will I know my goal is accomplished?

Achievable: Stretch and challenge goals within your ability to achieve the desired outcome. Is the goal reasonable enough to be accomplished? How so? Make sure the goal in not out of reach or below standard performance.

Relevant: How does the goal tie into your key responsibilities, vision and overall worthwhile to your needs? Is the goal consistent with other goals you have established and fits in your immediate long term plans? Does this goal help achieve a bigger goal?

Time-Bound: Your objective should include a time limit. A finite start and end date. Set deadlines on the main goal and the intermediate tasks/goals that need to be completed in order to complete the main goal. This will create a sense of urgency and prompt you to have better time management and accountability around the goal and to your team.
