Mamma Mia! It’s been 50 years since ABBA, clad in silver platform boots and bright outfits garnished with shiny sequins, won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, effectively catapulting the group toward international superstardom.
But at its core, ABBA was about two musically gifted couples who decided to combine their talents. So how did it affect this beloved rock band when several years later, as they were reveling in their success and ‘money, money, money,’ first one couple, and then the second, decided to split?
That’s one of the key questions we explore in this nostalgic and lively episode dedicated to one of the most enduring and beloved bands in music history, ABBA. And what better time to pay tribute to the group that created hits like “Fernando” and “Dancing Queen,” sparked a Broadway musical and two films, and in recent years became the subject of a virtual concert experience than on the occasion of this 50th anniversary?
No need to take a chance on this episode–it’s sure to entertain! The show is also available on your favorite podcast app and the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel.

The horse-drawn covered wagon pulls to a stop at the top of a hill. Pa and Ma smile from the wagon seat as they watch their three young girls, clad in petticoats and prairie dresses, scamper down the wildflower-covered slope, little Carrie taking a tumble on the way.
If like millions of others you grew up watching “Little House on the Prairie,” chances are you not only visualized the scene being described, but even heard the stirring strains of the theme song playing in your mind. But what you may not realize is that this year– hold onto your bonnet– the beloved TV classic turns 50!
In this special Varietea episode we celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Little House on the Prairie” by discussing everything from the show’s origins and cast, to fun behind-the-scenes stories and even a few of the controversies that have come to light in more recent years.
So join us for a nostalgic return to Walnut Grove to visit with Half-Pint and the rest of the Ingalls family, along with mean old Nellie Oleson and all the other townspeople you’ve missed so dearly.

Elizabeth Taylor is remembered for her legendary screen performances, dedicated activism related to the AIDS cause, and keen business sense.
But her accomplishments were sometimes overshadowed by the romantic entanglements of her personal life… relationships that earned her the title 'homewrecker' and at one point prompted the Pope to advocate Elizabeth’s children be taken away from her.
Our September theme is Breaking Up is Hard to Do, at our listeners’ request, and who better to highlight than Hollywood screen star Elizabeth Taylor, who made even breaking up look easy.
Join us as we trace Liz’s 8 marriages, including the scandalous affair with Richard Burton that the Pope denounced as “erotic vagrancy,” one relationship that ended due to abuse and another due to death, and the wedding that took place at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch to a man 20 years younger.
MID-ROLL AD: Thank you to listener Laura A. for her support of Scandal Water & to Brian for his top-of-the-episode shout-out!

On Tuesday, July 24, 1984, a friend discovered 68 year-old Delores Lynch, deceased, on the driveway outside her home. Upon arrival, the police– including Oldham County detective Lynn Nobles– were surprised to also discover Delores’s 39-year-old daughter Janie inside. Both women had died from gunshot wounds that appeared to be from a professional hit.
Before it was all said and done, 7 more would be dead and two families nearly destroyed.
This bizarre and tragic murder case, as detailed by Jerry Bledsoe in his best-selling true crime book “Bitter Blood” and a subsequent 1994 made for TV miniseries, was the subject of a Scandal Water episode last September.
And in today’s very special Varietea episode we are proud to share our follow-up interview with the aforementioned detective, Lynn Nobles, who not only worked the Lynch murder investigation from the very beginning, but was also present during that fateful police chase in North Carolina, even sustaining an injury from Fritz Klenner’s gunfire.
You won’t want to miss this interview during which Lynn walks us through the case from his own first-hand perspective, sharing new insights and clarifying a few points that were missed in the book.

In this lively update episode, Candy and Ashley spill the tea about new developments that occurred after their season 3 episodes aired.
What interesting first-hand experience related to the ‘Dark Highway’ murder site did listener Kathy share via audio clip? What response did Nightbirde’s brother Mitch offer after the episode on Jane aired? What new information did we glean about the entertainment mogul after watching the documentary mentioned in our Tyler Perry episode, “Maxine’s Baby”? And what incredible Varietea episode is in the works as a follow-up to our #1 most-downloaded episode, “The Tragic ‘Bitter Blood’ Murders”?
We discuss all this and more, including updates on previous episode topics, such as the recent Graceland foreclosure scam and the “Rust” trial of Alec Baldwin.
So be sure to enjoy this extra splash of tea and next week’s very special Varietea episode, which will be our only two August episodes. After that, we’ll take a two-week break, then see you in September for Season 4 of Scandal Water!

This week we are headed to prison… and you’re invited to tag along!
You won’t want to miss this fascinating interview with the man who created the award-winning and life-changing program, “Shakespeare Behind Bars,” Curt Tofteland.
How did Curt come up with the idea to take Shakespeare into the prisons? What process does he follow to build trust with the inmates and guide them to perform a Shakespearean play? What challenges, and also success stories, has Curt encountered over the years? And how has the program expanded to now include “Shakespeare BEYOND Bars”?
These are just a few of the many questions we discuss with Curt Tofteland, who will soon celebrate 30 years of working with this program, which is also the subject of an award-winning documentary.

“Oh Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou, Romeo?”
Chances are this summer you can find him– along with many other characters from the famed works of Shakespeare– in the idyllic setting of Central Park in old Louisville, where Candy and Ashley recently enjoyed the renowned Kentucky Shakespeare’s Free Festival in Central Park.
In this fun episode we first take a brief look at the Bard himself, William Shakespeare. And while Will is widely believed to be the most famous and most celebrated playwright of all time, you just might be surprised at some of the interesting new details that come to light.
Then with the help of Matt Wallace, Kentucky Shakespeare’s Producing Artistic Director, and actors Gregory, Justin, and Mollie, we take you behind the scenes of the Shakespeare Festival. You won’t want to miss hearing fascinating insights and first-hand stories directly from the performers themselves.
Finally, we share highlights from Ashley and Candy’s field trip to see “Comedy of Errors,” including audience reactions from Kara, Dave, Sally, Fin, Wally, and Sylvia.
To go or not to go… there is no question! Head on over to Kentucky Shakespeare’s Free Festival in Central Park, right after you give this episode a listen. 😉

On your mark, get set, BAKE!
If that phrase sounds familiar–and you avoid soggy bottoms like the plague– there’s a good chance you’re already a fan of “The Great British Baking Show.”
But what is it that sets this particular show– called “The Great British Bake-Off” in the UK– apart from the American ones produced on the other side of the pond? That’s just one of the many questions we explore in this scrumptious episode!
What caused the original hosts, Mel and Sue, and original judge Mary Berry to leave the show? What rigorous audition process do would-be contestants have to undergo in order to be selected? What interesting behind-the-scenes stories have former contestants shared? And what prize does the winning baker receive?
Be sure to join us for this fun episode where we discuss all this and more– it’ll be better than a Paul Hollywood handshake!
