At age 53, Jim Fry is what you would call a non-traditional student here on this campus, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Jim arrived here this semester as the Tennessee Board of Regents Outstanding Community College Student of the Year for 2019 - and not long after that, the UTC Retirees Association selected him as its first-ever scholarship recipient. In 1983, more than twenty-five years ago, nurses and caregivers at San Francisco General Hospital opened “Ward 5B” - the first ward in the world for AIDS patients. Their work changed how those patients were cared for during the early years of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980’s.
