The playoffs begin! This is quarterfinal #1 between two of the highest-scoring schools in our first rounds of competition! This begins the final series of programs in our 36th season of "Scholastic Games," the weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio. The show is produced from January through May of each year. The teams in this playoff are Vermilion High School, and Avon High School. Avon is our defending champion, the team that, last spring, became only the fifth area school to have won the championship five times in our program's history. Vermilion is a two-time winner of our championship.

Vermilion and Olmsted Falls are both past championship winners, and Brookside, though reaching the semifinals in recent years, has yet to reach the top.

This program, which spotlights two of our quarterfinalists, is a rebroadcast of our highest-scoring program of the year, when the two teams achieved not only the highest winning score but also the highest losing score at the end of the contest. The schools are Avon High School from the northern part of the county and Black River High School from a district extending from a southern corner of the county down through parts of Medina and Ashland counties. We have come to call them the teams that won't go away: last year, comprised of mostly juniors, the teams similarly achieved the highest and lowest scores of the year early in a season that ended with a rematch in the championship (won by Avon). Back this year with only one graduated senior no longer among them, the two minimally-changed teams repeated their feat. Will they meet again in this year's championship? The only prediction we can make is that these teams will mostly graduate this year as they are now majority senior class members!

John Carroll University in the Cleveland, Ohio, area, is one of the institutions supporting the Scholastic Games Tuition Credit Award Program. We periodically interview individuals at our supporting institutions for an update on programs and opportunities offered to students. Bob Tayek's guest is the Associate Dean of Admissions, Ryan Mann, who details not only some aspects of its history, but a number of the current activities at this dynamic, growing university.

This is the seventh program of our 2026 season of "Scholastic Games," our weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio. The show is produced from January through May of each year. This week represents the last of our first-round competitions, as Elyria Catholic High School makes its debut visit to the program. Weather and other factors have caused scheduling difficulties this year, delaying the team's appearance, so its opposing team is a second visit to the program from Avon Lake High School, which defeated North Ridgeville High School in an earlier competition. As playoff seedings are based on scores, the team may earn a better position from a higher score this time. Avon Lake has won the county championship on three occasions, most recently in 2020. Elyria Catholic has not yet produced a champion team, but as this program may indicate, this could be its year.

"Dialogues on Education" is a weekly companion program to "Scholastic Games," an interview feature focusing on success stories in the area of education. It is produced and hosted by broadcast veteran Bob Tayek. The guest on this week's offering is Robert Harrison, the newly named Marketing and Communications Director for the Elyria Public Library System, which has been host venue for our broadcasts and our radio sponsor for over a decade. The library takes pride in its long history and in the diversity of its services to the community.

This is the sixth program of our 2026 season of "Scholastic Games," our weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio. The show is produced from January through May of each year. This week's first team is the academic team from Brookside High School in Sheffield Village, Ohio. In its first appearance, it faces Grafton's MidviewHigh School, last week's runner-up team, filling in for the last of the first-round teams, which will be represented next week. If Midview achieves a higher score, it could betters it odds for reaching playoff rounds. Midview once produced a championship team, while Brookside has reached playoffs the past several years.

This is our annual visit with the President of Lorain County Community College, Marcia Ballinger. Dr. Ballinger has been with the college for decades and is celebrating her tenth anniversary as president. Another thing worth celebrating is a national honor naming LCCC as one of the top comunity colleges in the USA. With low tuition, exemplary partnerships with a number of universities in the region and many excellent offerings for students, it is much deserved.
