  • CARTA: The Role of Myth in Anthropogeny - Stories of Fire: Origins Interactions and Futures with Michael Chazan
As the global response to climate change drives a profound reevaluation of our interaction with fire, there's a timely opportunity to delve into the roots of our connection with combustion. Archaeologist Michael Chazan uncovers early traces of human fire usage at Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa and Evron Quarry in Israel. Chazan contends that it's more apt to consider the emergence of a dynamic bond between humans and fire rather than pinpointing a singular origin. This symbiotic relationship is defined by how fire intertwines technology and society, the tangible and intangible, adaptation and the sacred. Join us in exploring this intricate interplay, shedding light on the fusion of humanity and the elemental force that has shaped civilizations. • CARTA: The Role of Myth in Anthropogeny - All the Stories Animals Don't Tell with Daniel Povinelli
Humans have been telling stories about animals as long as humans have been telling stories. One story humans tell about animals is the one about how, with enough care and patience humans might one day listen to the stories animals themselves have to tell. Some folks see this story as nonfiction, a truth about animals manifest in the dance of bees, the grunts of monkeys, the antics of their dogs and cats, or the signs produced by trained gorillas. In this talk, I attempt examine these conflicting views. Despite the fact that animals do not sit around fires telling stories, are their minds organized in story-like formats? Do their mental representations of the events of the past, present and future constitute general narratives? Do they construct and reflect on their own personal narratives? And finally, and perhaps more paradoxically, are our scientific answers to these questions a better reflection of the internal world of animals or the humans who study them? • Navigating Challenges in Genomics and Patient Advocacy
The Science & Technology Ethics Center (STEC) is proud to present a series of lectures and a panel discussion that explores the intersection of genomics, medical ethics, and patient rights. This thought-provoking session delves into the ethical considerations surrounding genetic testing, data privacy, and informed consent. It examines the challenges and opportunities presented by advancements in genomics and how they impact patient care. The panel will discuss the importance of advocating for patients' rights, ensuring equitable access to genetic information, and fostering a patient-centered approach in genomic medicine. Throughout this presentation, you will grasp a deeper understanding of the ethical complexities in genomics and the critical role of patient advocacy in shaping responsible and inclusive genomic practices. • Machinery of Human Memory with Richard Atkinson
Renowned psychologist Richard Atkinson, president emeritus of the University of California and professor emeritus of cognitive science and psychology at the UC, San Diego, presents an in-depth exploration of the Atkinson-Shiffrin model, a fundamental theory in memory research. The model proposed memory comprises three components: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Information moves from sensory to short-term memory with attention, and through rehearsal, it can transfer to long-term memory. The model highlighted attention and rehearsal's significance and laid a foundation for memory research, leaving a lasting impact on psychology. [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 38852]

  • Stem Cell Approaches to Understanding Acquired and Genetic Epilepsies with Jenny Hsieh - Breaking News in Stem Cells
Over 65 million people around the globe are affected by epilepsy. Jenny Hsieh's research explores the underlying causes and mechanisms of epilepsies. Using stem cell-based models, including patient-derived neurons, she investigates how genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of these conditions and potential therapies. • Navigating the Climate Crisis: Meeting the Challenges Ahead
The confluence of the accelerating climate crisis, more frequent and severe disasters, widespread systemic injustice and oppression, and any number of additional coinciding crises paint a dark picture of our future. Climate professionals often feel inadequately trained to facilitate, navigate and lead communities through the transformative changes we all face. This program will offer directions on how these essential workers — and all of us — can grow the necessary skills and capacities to face and navigate our future. It is those very skills that may yet make us homo sapiens sapiens — “wise humans.” Series: "Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series" [Science] [Show ID: 38692]

  • Unraveling the Role of Histone Deacetylation during Cell Division
The human body is made up of billions of cells. These cells are the basic building blocks of life, and they work together to form tissues, organs, and systems that enable our body to function and carry out various activities. Each cell has its own specific function and role in maintaining the overall health and functionality of the body. From the skin to the brain, muscles to blood, and everything in between, these countless cells collaborate harmoniously to keep us alive and well, but how do these cells know what to do? When a cell divides, how does it know that it's exact counterpart should do the same thing as the original. Researchers at the Goren Lab at UC San Diego are working to determine just that. They discuss some of the work they are doing to learn more about the human body beyond the cellular level [Health and Medicine] [Science] [Show ID: 38259]

  • From Teacher to Chatbot: The Role of ChatGPT in Education
ChatGPT has the potential to enhance learning by providing instant answers, explanations, and personalized assistance to students. It can offer additional support, especially in areas where teachers may be limited. However, concerns arise regarding overreliance on artificial intelligence, as it lacks human understanding and may provide incorrect or incomplete information. Educators must consider the ethical and practical implications of integrating ChatGPT into educational settings for optimal learning outcomes. A panel of experts from UC San Diego discuss the benefits and pitfalls of the chatbot's use in education settings. Series: "Data Science Channel" [Science] [Education] [Show ID: 38936]
