I love the words of the song Breathe — and I, Im desperate for You! And I, Im lost without You! One thing we find throughout Scripture that seems to accompany the Spirit of God being poured out is an expressed desperation for Him. This message is a cry of desperation!

Expectations define our activity. Our Advent devotional for today discusses the expectations of the different Jewish groups during Jesus’s day regarding the promised Messiah of Israel. Despite a conscious expectation that God would ultimately fulfill His promises to Israel the expectations of what that would look like varied from group to group. Ultimately, when Jesus revealed Himself as God’s Messiah, few people in the intended audience recognized Him.

Twice, the apostle Paul instructs that as members of the body of Christ we are “members of one another.” There’s an inherent intertwining of our lives together.

Our commission is to extend the love and compassion of

Christ to every person we encounter. We are to live our lives in such a way that people are compelled to take a look at Christ, to consider His offer of forgiveness and life, to receive the hope and joy that He offers to everyone. That in the midst of chaos, one can live in total peace. We are to offer and extend hope to the hopeless.

Biblical community, life together with one another. We are to live out the gospel with one another in biblical community, and in relationship with the world around us. At the heart of it is the guiding principle that God loves the world, that even while we were sinners Christ died for us. His love is reaching out. His love for us and for others is not dependent upon our response. He first loved us, and therefore, we should love one another.
