  • The Lost Art Of Selling

There’s an old saying in sales that goes like this. “Customers Buy Solutions Not Products Or Services”. The logic behind this saying is straight forward. To make the sale we should focus on the benefits our customers will get if they buy our solution, and not on the specific features of our offer. Simple, right?  Yea, not so fast.

With almost 4 decades of sales and business experience I can say with confidence that customers buy a lot more than solutions to problems. In todays mini episode of Tim Talks I share truths and advice to help eaely stage or wannabe entrepreneurs

  • Ep 205 A Disabled Vet Shows Us What Entrepreneurship Is All About | Juan Baret

Juan C. Baret, a disabled veteran, is a former Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force and the founder of  Baret’s Bats. In Juan’s words “Baret Bats is the result of a transformative journey, which turned a challenge into an opportunity.”

Juan was inspired to start Baret Bats™ because as a disabled veteran, it became harder to keep up his active baseball lifestyle. In 2012, he made a last attempt in playing in a local wood bat amateur baseball league. As the season went on, it was apparent that he was not going to finish the season. But rather than focusing on the things he could no longer do, Juan chose to cultivate other interests such as: woodworking and design. And he discovered that for more than 100 years, baseball bats were hand turned using traditional lathe and chisels. In fact, the majority of players in the baseball hall of fame used hand turned bats and as we can attest, they made baseball history along with the bat makers that crafted their bats. Invigorated with this renewed outlook, he saw an opportunity to get back in the game by dedicating himself to the art and science of handcrafting baseball bats.

    In this episode Juan:

    • Talked about his humble beginnings growing up in the Dominican Republic and the things he learned from his mom who was a community activist. Juan moved to the United States at age 9 and grew up  in south Bronx next to Yankee Stadium
  • Discussed his path to the US Airforce which saw him serve 9 years including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2011.
  • Shares how his life changed when he came back. He found himself in pain, struggling to play baseball and was also the parent of 2 young children.
  • Explains why he decided to start Baret bat’s
  • Spoke glowingly about Warrior’s Rising, an organization we learned about in an earlier Episode  with Jason Van Camp
  • Went deep on the challenges he’s faced in starting and scaling his business
  • And called out people who think that money is a sauce that will lead to happiness. In Juan’s word you need to have a purpose
  • Get ready to be inspired by a humble, hard working, military veteran and also get a glimpse of entrepreneurial life. Enjoy…

  • Is Impact The Most Overused Word In Business?

Is “impact” the most overused word on LinkedIn these days. I suppose there are other candidates. There are all of the self appointed Thought Leaders who can’t tell you what their original thought is. There are those that confuse the word Authentic with looking for a shoulder to cry on. Don’t even get me started with all the “business experts” who have never really started or scaled a business. But these days Impact is one that just seems to keep popping up.

In this mini episode of Tim Talks he digs into the overuse of the word impact, and reveals the true reasons so many people rely on it to describe their business goals and objectives.

  • How To Save Money & Get Customers Faster,

Today’s Tim Talks is inspired by my Interview with Kyle Elliot on Episode 198 of Screw the Naysayers when he shared with us the origins of his business. I thought it was a great story and also a reminder that a lot of people are making things a lot more complicated than it needs to be.

Kyle started his business on Fiverr, charging a mere 5 bucks to edit resumes and write LinkedIn profiles. His goal was to support his soy, sugar-free vanilla latte addiction through undergrad and grad school. He never imagined that his college side hustle would turn into a thriving coaching practice. While he helps people across every industry and nearly every continent, Kyle’s specialty is the high tech space and Silicon Valley.

He’s gone from a 5 dollar freelancer on Fiverr to someone who has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, The Ladders, and many other publications. He’s also killing it on LinkedIn where he has more than 60k followers.

Tune in to see how these lessons can be applied to any new business startup.
