  • Ep 161 Defining Success On Your Terms | Jeff Munn

For the first forty or so years of his life Jeff Munn was a classic overachiever. He got straight A’s, went to great schools, and the first college graduate and the first lawyer in his family. After graduation, Jeff worked at a firm that was the best in the country at what he did.

Over the next twenty years Jeff’s career evolved from law, to consulting, to managing large client relationships, to lobbying, to creating national marketing campaigns. He loved that he got to do work that felt important to him. Then in August of 2016, everything changed for Jeff. As a result of a corporate restructuring, Jeff and his boss were both let go on the same day. He suddenly went from a successful role at a leading financial services firm to not having a job. His first reaction was panic. He tried, without success, to find another position in the same company. When it became clear that was not going to happen, Jeff took a step back, and decided that he didn’t want to be an employee again.

    In this episode Jeff:

    • Tell us that deciding he wanted to be self employed was the easy part. Deciding what he was going to do was harder.
  • Explains the process he used to find his fit in the market
  • Shares how he got his first client
  • Talks about the role meditation played in his understanding that he had more control than he realized
  • Explains why he and his wife moved from the east coast to live in the mountains of Colorado
  • Exposes the dangers in becoming obsessed with goals other people set for you
  • And talks about how he uses his experiences to advise and mentor senior executives.
  • This interview is an upfront look at the journey Jeff has been on transitioning from corporate life to self employment. It’s still a work in process. Enjoy.

  • 5 Signs That A Business Is Chasing Money

Successful entrepreneurs understand the difference between chasing money and solving problems for customers. That’s because solving important problems is the only way to build a sustainable and scalable business. Most, if not all entrepreneurs nod in agreement when I say this. All deny that they are chasing money, most often followed by a head shake and some version of people that do that are disgusting, aren't they? They would never do something like that.

Sadly the vast majority of service based businesses are in fact chasing money. This doesn’t make them bad or evil. In almost all cases they’re intentions are good. They really do want to help customers solve meaningful problems. They just haven’t done the hard work to figure out what that problem really is. Today I  share with you 5 signs that you may be chasing money.

  • Ep 159 The Art of Making Things Happen | Steve Sims

Steve Sims has worked with Sir Elton John  and Elon Musk, sent people down to see the wreck of the Titanic on the sea bed and closed a museum in Florence for a private dinner party beneath Michael Angelo’s David and then had Andrea Bocelli serenade the diners while they ate their pasta?

Entrepreneur Magazine labeled Steve as “The Real Life Wizard of Oz” because he has developed a reputation for making the impossible, possible. Steve is also a best selling Author of "BLUEFISHING - the art of making things happen”, a sought-after consultant, and a public speaker who has spoken around the world. As we spoke I was visualizing the reaction he must have gotten when he spoke at the Pentagon and Harvard. After all, a shaved head, Harley Davidson garb and body piercings on a 5’ 11”, 240 lb. frame don’t scream “let’s hang out at Harvard.”

Born and raised in London England, Steve began his working career as a bricklayer, and to use his words he spent 20+ years falling on his face to learn the lessons that others can implement into their career ambitions. In this fascinating conversation Steve opened up about his journey from bricklayer to doorman, to the founder of Bluefish, a luxury concierge service for VIP and executive clients. We even had a chance to talk about his philosophy on parenting. This episode is both entertaining and informative.  Enjoy…

  • Ep 157 Everyday Leadership | Drew Dudley

Drew Dudley’s TEDx talk “Everyday Leadership” has been viewed close to five million times and praised by Time, Business Insider, and Inc. Magazine.

Drew is the founder of Day One Leadership, where he works with individuals and organizations around the world to unlock their leadership potential. He is also the author of a WSJ bestseller titled This Is Day One- A practical guide to leadership that matters.

His 6 minute TEDx talk, which revolves around a story about a lollipop, has been voted one of the 15 most inspirational TED talks of all time. My conversation with Drew was exceptional on so many levels. One thing that really stands out is that when Drew talks about leadership is that he does it in a way that anyone can relate to. If we think about, most of what we learn about leadership is often based upon the stories of an elite few who have achieved extraordinary things. Drew argues that this approach has made us lose sight of the opportunities we all have to be leaders. Drew focuses on everyday activities and has developed an easy to understand process that any of us can use.

Conversations on my show always seem to fly by, but this one felt like it was at mach speed. In our conversation Drew:

    • Observes that criticism tends not to flow downhill
  • Shares his famous lollipop story
  • Talks about a young woman he met on a train who asked him a question that had a huge impact on his life
  • Tells us that most discussions around values and leadership are BS
  • Explains the process he developed while working as a leadership instructor for smart university kids
  • Explains his approach to dealing with being a recovering alcoholic
  • And challenges all of us to identify our non-negotiable leadership goals
  • Drew is a master storyteller who is changing the way people look at leadership. Enjoy
