The Word is Near You (Romans 10:5-15)
“The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart.” God is nearer to us than we are to ourselves. In distress we long for escape into heaven or rescue from the abyss, yet the secret is redemptive suffering: we are united to the suffering of Christ, and our suffering is the path to glory with Him. Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer and then enter His glory? Nothing we suffer is in vain. In all our trials we are as near to Him as can be—more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

The Israel of God (Romans 9:1-8; 11:1-2, 29-32)
A Jewish Christian testimony: not all who are descended from Israel are Israel, yet God has not rejected His people. The gifts and the calling are irrevocable. From them proceeds the human descent of Christ; through their disobedience mercy has come to the nations, so that by the mercy shown to us they too may receive mercy. God has imprisoned all in disobedience that He may be merciful to all. The true Israel of God is the family of Abraham by faith in Christ—neither Jew nor Greek, but one in Him.

You Are What You Eat (Matthew 14:13-21)
Five loaves and two fish feed five thousand for a moment; the Word of God feeds all eternally and never becomes scarce. The miracle of the loaves pales beside the heavenly bread that has come down—Christ, the true good for which every heart hungers. By the forbidden fruit He conquered death and opened the Tree of Life, so that everything is now good for food if received with thanksgiving. We are what we eat: the dead eat the word of judgment, the living eat the word of grace. Taste and see that the Lord is good in all things.

Smoke Weed at Your Own Risk (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43)
The kingdom is like a field where the enemy sows weeds among the wheat; the Master says let both grow until the harvest, lest the wheat be uprooted. This is a call to non-judgment—whether in the Church’s mixed history or in our own hearts, only God separates. Legalism is a deep-rooted weed; the Spirit’s fire alone can smoke it, and sometimes transfigure it into wheat. Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more. We go a-weeding at our own risk—leave the harvest to Him.

A sower went out to sow, and the seed of the Word fell on path, rocky ground, thorns, and good soil. As we meditate, let us recognize ourselves: the distracted mind that snatches the heart’s reception, the rootless enthusiasm that withers under trial, the cares of the world that choke, and the good soil where mind and heart are aligned so the Word dies and bears fruit. Fertile soil hides death and decomposition; new life springs from what has fallen. May we sow with discernment, finding good soil among those who need a physician.

“Why do you call me good? Only God is good.” Paul delights in the law yet finds nothing good dwelling in his flesh—a guilty plea, not an apology. He refuses self-justification and the economy of moral debt. The Cross reveals that this game of usurious judgment is not God’s justice: all are captive under the law of sin, and with what measure we judge, we will be judged. When tried, testify with Paul that good cannot be found in ourselves, and preach the goodness of God who loves all and desires that all be saved. Wretched man that I am—thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

You’ve heard it said that Jesus died in our place. But what if we live in Jesus’ place? Baptized into His name, we put on Christ and live His life rather than our own. On the Cross He did not substitute for us so much as take His place among us in solidarity, drawing all to Himself. We are called to be His vicars—ambassadors of reconciliation—so that every welcome and every cup of cold water given in His name is both given and received by Christ Himself. The mystery is completed in what He longs to do through us.

Coming from Zen, the “body of sin” and the death of the teacher felt familiar—yet Paul speaks of something more: dying and rising with Christ here and now. Contemplating the death and resurrection of Christ was the ultimate koan. Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more; mercy triumphs over judgment, and to be resurrected is to be love. The Gospel of the death and resurrection of Christ just might be the ultimate Zen koan. It was for me.

The harvest is plentiful and the workers few—and Jesus identifies the harvesters as both His disciples and angels. To be a disciple of Christ is to be an angel: a ministering spirit sent to serve those who will inherit salvation. Born of the Spirit, we are Spirit; in the Resurrection we are like the angels in heaven. The Great Commission is the cosmic harvest that transfigures the world through humble virtue. In the disciples of Christ, the world is entertaining angels unaware.

For Melito the Gospel is the true antitype of the Hebrew Passover, fully realized in the suffering Christ. What was old with respect to the Law is new with respect to the Word. Peri Pascha builds from types and fulfillments into a prophetic climax where Christ speaks in the first person through Melito—turning the apocalypse into Christophany, the Word revealing Himself from heaven in the mouth of the prophet.
