Jesus eats with tax collectors and sinners, touches the unclean, and raises the dead—embodying the mercy God desires over sacrifice. The Pharisaical spirit demands austerity and separation; Christ draws near, trusting the God of Life to give life without exception. Let us not demand sacrifice from anybody in the name of God. The unclean need not become clean first; the traitor cannot merit mercy; the dead cannot raise themselves. God is not our Debtor but our Savior—the fountain of infinite, unmerited grace. May we proclaim and embody His extravagant love.

When they saw Him they worshiped—but some doubted. Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and earth has been given to Him, and that He is with us always for the synteleias tou aionos: the redemption of creation, the consummation of its divine purpose. The Great Commission is not ours to fulfill by our own power; the Spirit who gave it will accomplish it in us, even when faith is only a mustard seed. Even if we doubt, fear not: He is always with us, and the mission’s success is guaranteed.

After the Resurrection the apostles ask when the Kingdom will be restored. Jesus answers: you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you—and then He is taken up in the cloud to the Ancient of Days. The Spirit is not bound to times or seasons; she is a gift for those who wait in love, keeping His word so that Father and Son make their home within. Fix your gaze inward: the Day of Judgment is the Spirit’s conviction of the world through those in whom Christ is manifest. Why stand looking up? He comes the same way He went—hidden, in the heart.

At the Last Supper Jesus unveils the coming of the Spirit: if we keep His commandments, the Paraclete will abide in us and reveal Him. Christ’s word is the baptism that cleanses the conscience—not mere water—and by it the whole human being becomes spirit. As Palamas taught, this is enhypostatic union: we do not become the Spirit in essence, but partake of Him energetically, acting through and with Him, until we know ourselves as true children of the Father. True to His word, He has not left us orphans.

The Word of God is food: sweet as honey, mother’s milk for the newborn in Christ, meat for the mature. First we rid ourselves of malice, deceit, and envy so that we may long for pure spiritual milk and grow into genuine love from a pure heart. Born again of imperishable seed, we feast continually on the living Word—our supersubstantial sustenance from heaven—that ages us from glory to glory into the full stature of Christ. If our faith is young or mature, the Word is always enough.

The Jerusalem Church knew the city’s doom was near, yet they stayed—selling all they had to care for the poor, breaking bread with glad hearts, and laboring for souls until the oracle came to flee to Pella. There is a time to stay and share, and a time to retreat and replant; both are paths to peace. Empires fall, but the Church shelters what is good under the wings of the Father, the body of the Word made flesh, with the same Holy Spirit of caring and sharing.

On Pentecost three thousand were cut to the heart and baptized—slain in the spirit and reborn into the royal priesthood—just as three thousand fell in the wilderness at Sinai. The call to peace is elementary Gospel arithmetic. The first disciples proclaimed the social Kingship of Christ to powers and principalities not with steel but with the sword of the Spirit, exchanging hearts of stone for hearts of flesh. May all our nations be discipled, baptized, and reborn in Him, beginning with us.

On the road to Emmaus their eyes were opened when He broke the bread—the afikoman, the Lamb of God, fulfilled in the Kingdom. The bread is His body, and we are that body: it is in the breaking that we recognize Christ in one another. The early Church’s love feasts fed the hungry and revealed the Kingdom; so too our tables of grace, where we are both fed and food. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

April 5, 2026 Easter Sunday ReflectionThe tomb is empty—so is the world. All earthly treasure abandons us at death, but Jesus emptied Himself of love poured out for the life of the world, and the grave had no hold on Him. The mystery of Resurrection is the Transfiguration of the spiritual body: those who sow into the Spirit put on immortality. Christ is risen; He has plundered the grave and overcome the world. Let us follow Him into the redemption of His glorious resurrection. Hallelujah!

On Good Friday we see an execution—and the self-sacrifice of the divine high priest who enters the true holy of holies, the grave, offering His own blood. He inverts the Day of Atonement: heaven’s temple is on earth, the veil is torn, and the powers of darkness are judged from the Cross. Do we dare follow Him into His glory through suffering, joining the royal priesthood of passion? There is no way up but down.
