The Apostle Paul was a beggar. I’m not saying Paul was a beggar as seen on the streets of his day or our day. For some, begging is a profession, a livelihood that affords them their needs. Paul was a beggar in terms of his passion...so...Are you a beggar? As the Apostle Paul stood before Agrippa begging him, will you beg someone to come to church? Will you beg them as Paul did to "listen patiently" as you tell them the salvation story of Jesus Christ? Have you begged family members or friends, as Paul, to be reconciled to God and to become as you are an imitator of Christ?

There are times when the words that we are accustom to using in our every day language just aren’t good enough to fully express our meaning. The larger our vocabulary the more expressive we could be, but then we run the risk of people not understanding the point due to our word choice. Paul had a similar problem. We have come to a point in the Apostle Paul’s prayer where his words aren’t expressive enough. As he brings his prayer to an end, he gets lost in the emotions of his heart, but the limitation of his words just aren’t enough to express what he desires to say to the Ephesians in his doxology of grace.

I think that the deepest thoughts of the heart of a spiritual person will come out in their prayer. Hear a person of God pray in private, and you hear the real person speaking. If you only knew what your dearest friend or spouse asks God to give you, then you would know what, in their opinion, is your greatest need. Oh, if we could just sometimes hear those who love us best, and those who know us best, pray for us, it would be a revelation of the greatest benefit for us. We would then see what, in their judgment, was our deficiency—what, in their estimation, is our greatest need. In the passage before us, we are entering the prison cell to hear the heartfelt prayer of the Apostle Paul as he prays for the Ephesians, the other churches and us.

The Apostle Paul was always amazed of the fact that the Lord took someone like him, a blasphemer, a prosecutor of the church, a proud religious zealot, and made him a minister of the gospel. The Lord specifically called, elected, predestinated Paul to go and preach the good-news of Jesus Christ to Gentiles. The Lord’s commissioning of Paul energized the last of the Apostles to outdo the other Apostles. Paul was grateful and almost dumbfounded that the Lord recruited him on the road to Damascus and taught him in the desert. The Lord’s elective choice of Paul and in making him an Apostle always humbled Paul. In a very small and insignificant way, I look back upon my calling and I too am amazed.
