How To Gain Momentum
How to Gain Momentum for the Next Year
As we wrap up another year, I wanted to share a system I have been using for years to prepare for the upcoming year.
It involves celebration, reviewing painful moments, introspection, clarity, purpose, accountability and action steps.

[00:02] There is no such thing as work life balance, everything worth fighting for unbalances your life. That's a quote from Alain de Botton. Welcome to the recharge podcast. I'm your host. My name is Mitchell schwind. The mission of this podcast is to provide you the tools, tactics, strategies, and resources to recharge your life. The episodes are geared to make an impact on your life in 15 minutes or less, along with more indepth special episodes interviewing experts across numerous disciplines. This show will guide you through getting the most from your body and mind to generate the maximum performance you want in your life. Let's jump into today's. Okay. [00:35] Welcome [00:35] to another episode of the recharge podcast. I'm your host, Michelle. And what I'm sharing in this is how to gain momentum. I know it's early, just barely into the tail end of 2018, but I like to get clear and get prepared for 2019 and I want to share with you some thoughts and strategies and how you might utilize some tools and some tactics to really approach making 2017, the best year yet. The first thing I'd like to do is review 2018 or the previous year and look at not only what went well, what didn't go so well, what things did I, I want to say fail, but what areas did I fall short of and use those lessons as powerful tools and insights into the limiting beliefs and the mental loops that caused those issues and that causes me to come up short. I want to take lessons forward and learn from sometimes the pain, sometimes the disappointment, and use those as ways to reshape the mental framework of approaching problems in 2019 and solving the problems that I didn't solve this year. [01:41] Some of those are going to linger on and our ongoing battles. It's just part of the journey and that's a powerful tool. The next is to celebrate wins. It doesn't have to be something massive, are monumental. I like to celebrate the small wins. I keep a little book of, of, of, uh, awesomeness, if you will. Just little things that happen on a weekly basis that make me excited or proud or happy or how I've made an impact in someone else's life or my own life or how somebody impacted me and improve my life. I like to look back at those and at the end of the year I have a whole list of those that I can review and it just puts me back into state and brings back all those emotions of joy and happiness and gratitude and so I also look at what things happened that there's just no way I want those to fricking happen again in the following year and want to utilize tools and thought processes and systems to make sure that that doesn't happen again. [02:31] That I don't fall into those ruts, those traps, those mental loops that really tend to derail me in general, and I know we all have those. Nobody's immune from having these loops and mental traps. They're all there. Whether you realize them in your conscious mind or their lurking in the subconscious. If you doubt me, just ask somebody who's close to you and they'll be able to point out some patterns that they see on a consistent basis. The next step is to really get clear, to get absolute clarity and certainty about what I want and that a couple things. Number one is being very specific. I often hear people, whether it's patients or coaching clients, say, I want to lose some weight. Well, that's a very unspecific goal, or I want to make more money. Those things are just intangible and really difficult to approach when it's clear and measurable. [03:15] Say I want to lose five pounds by this date and here's why. It becomes very actionable, very tactical, very strategic in how to go about doing that. There's a difference between losing weight or say, I want to lose, you know, I want to lose like five or 10 pounds. Well, the difference between five pounds and 10 pounds can be dramatic. For example, right now I'm at the tail end of a five day fast. I went into it with some clear goals. I do this every quarter with my wife. I wanted to lose five pounds. I've exceeded that, aligned to maintain productivity, mental energy, wanting to work out, wanting to keep my business and my consulting clients going on track just as before I started the fast, despite some dips in energy and I was able to do that. But by having a clear idea, I want to lose. [04:00] For example, I want to lose three pounds by a January 15th and I'm gonna accomplish this by number one, not putting sugar or sweetener in my coffee. Number two, skipping the afternoon snack break at work, and number three, uh, getting a workout buddy and working out consistently at least three to five times a week where I sweat and get my heart rate up for at least 20 minutes. Very clear, easy to measure actionable. And there's an accountability component to it as well. So I think you can see what I'm getting at by really being concise about what you want rurally, help you plan out the steps and implement some strategies and tactics to get you the results and the outcome you're looking for. You need to get excited about it. And part of that is understanding your why. Why is it important to lose a few pounds, like three to five pounds? [04:45] Why is it important to make another $10,000 this year? Well, it could be something like you want to take a family trip to Greece next summer. You want to fit into your clothes better and you know, you'll feel better if you lose three pounds and you'll have more energy and be more motivated and more, more clear mentally because you're not pumping sugar into your body. And so getting some why behind your outcomes really helps motivate and drive you. It makes you excited about that. The anticipation of an outcome, a trip in event is often as pleasurable, if not more pleasurable than the actual event itself. Uh, I can speak from experience. It took my family to Italy last year and the whole planning process for a variety of reasons was very exciting. The kids were involved in it. They were online looking at things, they were talking about clothes and the food they eat. [05:31] And they were looking at the rental houses and they were very wrapped up in the whole process and involved and it really kind of created a buzz and an energy in our house, particularly as the date became closer and closer and it actually was a reality and so that really created some excitement, some focus. We had a certain outcome and by laying out this trip, well in advance of my wife and I knew what we needed to do financially to make that a reality. What sort of tactics and strategies can we implement to achieve that and what do we need to do in our own businesses because we both are entrepreneurs and run our own businesses. How do we keep those businesses alive and running when we're gone off the grid for two weeks and so all those things create a focus in and get us committed on those results and as you gain momentum from clarity, accountability, and understanding your why, you'll generate more and more momentum in another way to maintain that momentum as you push into these challenging areas and outcomes. [06:28] As you wrap up this year at push into the next year is to track it to keep a journal. I keep a written journal because I find that the written aspect of it as much more mentally stimulating than if I would just type it into a computer on some spreadsheet that I never see. Another little tip trick I use is I have my outcomes for the upcoming year on my home screen on my phone. So every time I pick up my phone I see that there is a background image there that really sparks my mind, my emotion, my gratitude, my happiness, and really gets me into state to help me realize the importance of why I want to achieve these 10 things. And you can have your own categories, but it might include, you know, your business, your bonds with your friends, your family, your relationship with your significant other, your health, uh, your, your spirit or creator or spirituality, whatever words you'd like to use. [07:17] There are a whole host of other things. Um, fun, adventure, travel. You can create your own category, but those pop up, every time I pick up my phone reminds me on a daily basis, multiple times over and over again why I'm doing what I'm doing, why I'm making some choices, some sacrifices, some decisions that aren't always fun, and I'm tracking all these in a journal, so I review these obviously every day when I look at my phone, but once a week I review them, see where I'm at, whether I'm on target or on track with the specific outcomes. I create checkpoints and milestones. You know it's tempting to aim for the moon and that's fine, but you know even though you fall short, you're still better than you were before, but I encourage you to create tangible, achievable, actionable, innovator, intermediary steps that can allow you to celebrate the small wins and allow you to see progress. [08:07] You want to lose five pounds while you lost one pound this week. Check positive, excellent, good job, and track your progress as you achieve your goals. That reinforces your why and that you are capable of achieving much more than you thought you were in our review. These every quarter and at the six month mark, and again, as I wrap up the year and I do this early, I do it right after the Thanksgiving holiday. The house is quiet, uh, before the buzz of the Christmas season and it gets me really focused and honed in. So that one, 2019, uh, comes into chime. I'm already onboard hitting the ground, running, ready to go. I know what I'm going to achieve this year. I know how I'm going to do it and I can clearly proceed with a course of action. So I hope you found that helpful and I want to share something else with you, uh, just as a special bonus for making it to the end of this. [08:59] If you head over to the [email protected], the only dad in there as the.com, there's something special there for you. If you drop your name into the list, uh, I'll be sending this out. Transcript (it's machine generated to take it easy on me):
[00:07] Welcome to another episode of the recharge podcast. I'm your host, Mitchell Schwindt. I'm curious if you speak this language or understand those who do. It's called the because I language perhaps you might understand its cousin, the Buckeye language, a little bit more fitting, a little bit more common. What I'm getting at really is the language of self sabotage. If you don't speak this language, I applaud you for your self mastery, but if you find yourself surrounded by those who speak these words, it's time to move on to your friends. Constantly use the because I the Buckeye, the should I phrases to sabotage your efforts to make suggestions on how they could improve their life, improve their health, shift their business, improve their relationships. Oh, but I could never. Or because I can't because x, Y, and Z. I mean, how often do we hear those phrases and it's really just a form of self sabotage. [00:58] Whether you're saying it yourself or someone who's close to you, maybe it's a student, an athlete, a colleague at work. It doesn't really matter. No, this. There are some effective strategies that you can implement to deal with the because I language and it's really with a goal of overcoming fear to help you get what you want from life or help your client or student get what they want out of particular situation. So I'm gonna. Give you three tips here. The first is the strategy of knowing your why, simply knowing why you do what you do and what's at stake will really shift the mindset. Be sure to dig several layers deep. For example, it's not losing seven pounds, his is not the why. It's much more complex than a number it might be to look good, to feel great, to improve blood pressure, blood sugar, to eat healthier, to avoid becoming diabetic or even just to set a good example for your kids. [01:51] Knowing the why really drive home the decision making and provide a higher level of motivation. Knowing what's at stake if you fail to achieve an outcome is critical. The next is to be flexible and really there is no success without failure. It's just part of the process and we've got to get out of the mindset that everything has to be a success. It just doesn't work that way. You know, and I know it, and it doesn't mean that you failed or that you're not cut out for something. It just really means that the universe is showing up to nudge you in a direction that's closer to the answer and the outcome that you're looking for and the final take home point and strategy here is to really visualize the outcome that you're after. So many people focus on what they don't want. It's like driving a race car. [02:36] You have to look where you're going. If you look at the wall, you're gonna crash into the wall. I just, it's just a known fact. The same as for life. Stop answering questions about what you want it by generating a list of all the things that you don't. I hear this constantly with my coaching clients and students. When we talk about a outcome or a goal, oftentimes we'll get three or four things that they don't want and they're focusing on that and they're pulling into their life, and so I just really encourage you to aim your attitude where you want to go. Take a look at some things in your life. Look at the last few days, even the last few hours. How often did you speak the [inaudible] language and made excuses for not getting what you want? It's time to shift your focus, change your language and let your soul speak it's truth. I'm telling you, the universe will conspire to help you if you found value here, please like, comment and share, and I look forward to talking with you in the next. [03:28] So have a fantastic week.

Let's jump into today's episode. Thanks for stopping by. What I'm talking about in this episode is apropos for Movember or the men's health month where we kind of focus more on some specific issues including breast cancer, testicular cancer, and unfortunately suicide, but with that in mind, the concept of a mustache growth brings me to a topic that I want to dive into just briefly here, and that is hair loss. [00:55] Hair loss is a huge issue for men and women in general, but obviously the stigma, the social part of things for men off of looms large and many are desperate to try anything and end up throwing a lot of money away in the process. And so I want to back up a few steps into, try to dive a little bit deeper into some of the issues around what can cause potential hair loss for men in general and just kind of open up the mind to understand that there are other things out there that can be a factor and if they're not addressed there really a result in poor outcome from whatever you try, whether that's a Rogaine Minoxidil, finasteride or you're doing something topical or natural, like an anti aging hair shampoo that I can tell you more about if you're curious. But. So I'm just gonna walk you through the questions that I typically will ask my coaching clients in the men's health space in regards to the hair loss. [01:45] So the first one is how long have you been noticing hair loss? You know, if it's, if it's an acute thing, it could signify an illness or maybe there was an acute stressful events or something changed, a geographic move and there's something in the water are missing from the Diet. That's certainly possible. Family history is a huge part of it. The hereditary component of male pattern baldness obviously looms large and I think that, you know, knowing the family history can really help people be a little more proactive if they're trying to stave off some hair loss as opposed to trying to approach it after the horse is already out of the gate, so to speak. A diet is a huge factor and unfortunately the western society, many of the diets that people consume are highly inflammatory and missing out on a lot of micronutrients that can be essential for not only hair growth but also nail growth and so that's an important question to know about and we discussed that in more detail. [02:34] Next is medications, their variety of medications that can actually deplete micronutrients and can set up a person to have some issues with hair loss and disformed nails essentially. So next is vitamins and supplements, uh, there are some key ones that I generally suggest, but there are some ones that really have been shown to help improve not only hair growth but also a nailed strength and her fullness. So those are critical to know about as well. And then the common things that are very helpful to myself as a healthcare professional but also as a men's health coaches, you know, what kind of medical problems are we dealing with in the past? What sort of things are looming large on the presence scope, what about weight? Is weight been stable, has been any dramatic weight loss or weight gain because that certainly has factors. Um, bariatric surgery and gastric bypass surgery unfortunately is viewed by many as a, as a fix for obesity, but it has some drastic consequences in terms of nutritional deficiencies, which can also affect hair loss among other things. [03:35] And so it's a little bit more in depth topic than I can cover here in this short podcast. And the final question is any, um, things that are put on the hair, what's our products are used right now and sort of results have you gotten. And then the final thing is, um, what kind of water do you have? Do you have city water? Do you have well water, is it treated? Have you ever had it tested looking for things like heavy metals and other toxicities? So as you can see from what I've shared so far, there is a variety of things that are involved in healthy hair. And so I, I wanted us to bring that up because I have a lot of people that I talked to that are frustrated that they're spending, you know, 30, 40, $50 a month on a over the counter product and nothing's really happening or maybe it's just sort of static and stable and there are often other cues and clues to the equation that can potentially result in a better outcome. [04:30] And a few other topical products that I'm really passionate about. A little talk about later on where you can just message me. But anyways, I hope you have a fantastic November and will be ruling out some more focused issues again, on the men's health space this month. Be well. Talk to you soon. Thank you so much for spending some time with me today. If you found value in this episode and the show, please share a review in itunes. It really helps to show, get discovered. Please share your biggest takeaway, and as always, I want to help you answer the burning questions in your mind, so reach out to me at mentioned com [05:03] or on social media wherever you hang out. This show will guide you through getting the most from your body and mind to generate the maximum performance you want in your life. Let's jump into today's episode. [00:35] Things I really like to do is answer questions on quora and they're not all in medical topics that can range from triathlon endurance, training, cooking a sporting events. Um, the test taking, I have a variety of interests and I like to share in this video is about a question I received on Benadryl. And how does the Benadryl help a person's sleep? I teach a sleep's a course that helps people get better sleep in one week and a Benadryl, although it comes up a lot, it's not one of the typical things that is recommended for most people for sleep. And there's a couple reasons why the mechanism of Benadryl is it works as an antihistamine and it makes you drowsy and sedate. And one of the problems with that is that, uh, the half life is so variable, I can range from about two and a half hours to over nine hours per a healthy adult. [01:20] So it's really hard to predict and a lot of people report feeling groggy and sort of hung over after they try Benadryl. It's actually for that reason that it's on the, uh, the no fly list for the FAA. So pilots are generally not allowed to take benadryl and fly for that very reason. Safety concerns also for people that are elderly and I guess that's generally defined as 60 or older based on some of the prescribing data, although I tend to disagree with that age, um, markers so to speak. Uh, the half life can be quite variable. It even prolong and so it can cause some problems with excessive sedation, can cause some movement problems and puts a certain people at risk for falls and injuries. So definitely be wary, uh, with the use of Benadryl for primary use of sleep. Uh, it is possible to become toxic with Benadryl. [02:07] High doses can cause a variety of dangerous problems and just want to tick off some of the side effects of Benadryl including hallucinations, heart palpitations, dizziness. I'm flushed skin, dry mouth, tremors, seizures, vomiting, even though it can help some cases with motion sickness and nausea can cause anxiety and nervousness, abdominal pain, delirium, even reports of coma and death, all with just simple benadryl. So it's found in a variety of products just from playing Benadryl syrup tablets. Uh, the, the uh, drug name is diphenhydramine. It's found in tylenol pm and a variety of other over the counter sleep aids. So I hope you found that helpful. If you have specific questions, I'm happy to answer those. [02:48] Thank you so much for spending some time with me today. If you found value in this episode and the show, please share a review in itunes as it really helps the show get discovered. So what I want to talk about today are five health myths that are killing you. They're literally killing you and you need to know these things. They're very simple and straightforward. First off is your cholesterol is low and so everything is fine. [00:48] Is that true? No, it's not. Well thinking was that if your total cholesterol, your ldl and your hdl, we're pretty good balance there. That your risk of cardiac disease like heart attack and stroke and those bad things was a lot lower than it was would be otherwise, while we now know that that is not good enough. In fact, it's actually the size of these different cholesterol particles that makes the biggest difference. This is critical and so the old typical method of just measuring the numbers and reporting that to you as the patient doesn't suffice. You need to know the size and so the the tests that you need to ask your doctor about or the vertical auto profile or the LPP. Those are the two common tests that are used, but just basically ask them to measure the size of your cluster all and this will give you a really good indication on the actual risk coming from your cholesterol for heart disease and stroke can have patients that have normal cholesterol, normal ldl, and still have an increased risk of heart disease. And so this is critical to your longevity. [01:46] So your blood sugar's 95, you're not diabetic, right? Well, diabetes is exploding, unfortunately in the near future. The vast majority of all of us in the United States are going to be diabetic if we don't do something about it. And so knowing which tests are needed to accurately diagnose diabetes or prediabetes is critical, uh, blood sugar or fasting blood sugar is okay, but it's not good enough if you certainly have risk for it or a family history or you're obese, you're gaining weight, uh, ask for some further looking, some checking test to consider would be not only the fasting blood sugar, but also a glucose challenge to see what actually happens to your blood sugar when you ingest a food source. And the other critical thing to measure is actual insulin. Many patients become resistant to the effects of insulin and that's all part of becoming diabetic and contributes to obesity and weight gain. And it's sort of a vicious circle. The, a one C, what you've probably heard of is just a good measure of what the blood sugar has been doing for last several months. So helpful. [02:47] But in the end, you need to dig deeper to get to the heart of the issue. So your fatigue, [02:53] your labs are normal. Well, it's all in your head, right? You may have heard this before and I'm sure you probably have friends or family that have gone through this scenario before where they're just exhausted all the time and basic tests. Thyroid blood count look normal, so they're told that they're fine and it's just a probably a psychologic issue or lack of sleep. The critical piece here is to understand that normal does not equate to optimal what is reported as normal for the vast majority may not be normal for you. It's the difference between living and optimized life versus just trying to fit into the normal standards. [03:31] Replacing hormones is dangerous. Unfortunately, there was a lot of misinformation and misrepresentation regarding some of the use of hormones, particularly in women and now with the a litigious society and the lawyers involved the testosterone issue in men. The reality is that unbalanced hormones are dangerous. We know from the data that hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved in regards to women who were taken off estrogen supplementation. Realize that these studies that showed that hormones are dangerous. We're done with horse derived estrogen. The estrogen basically was produced from the urine of horses. The other issue is testosterone is preventative for heart disease and having low testosterone and ignoring. The issue is to miss out on an opportunity to improve health and longevity and prevent heart disease. Lastly, milk is good, right? It's good for your bones. I compete in a lot of endurance events and triathlons and to see it in all the journals, all the magazines. [04:30] There's a well known athletes drinking glass of chocolate milk. The idea is that your body needs calcium and yes, there's calcium in milk, but there are much better dietary sources. The other issue is that milk is packed full of hormones. Some studies show as many as 32 different hormones in milk. We are the only species. Keep us in mind. The only species on the planet that drinks the milk of another species. Milk causes allergies can cause leaky gut and inflammation and it actually depletes calcium. That may sound counter intuitive, but the issue is the dairy products, milk included, are acidic in. The body has to buffer that acid load and where does it draw the buffers from? The readily available source of calcium is bones, and so it actually leaches calcium from the bones, and so although you're taking milk to try and pump up your calcium to build strong bones, it actually has a opposite effect. Thank you so much for spending some time with me today. If you found value in this episode and the show, please share a review on itunes as it really helps the show get discovered. Please share your biggest takeaway, and as always, I want to help you answer the burning questions in your mind, so reach out to me [05:44] on social media wherever you hang out.
