Parley Pratt’s journey of faith began with his departure from Ohio in 1830, inspired by the Spirit to seek out the Book of Mormon. After becoming converted, he met Joseph Smith around the time of the September 1830 Church conference. During this conference, the elders sought divine guidance on how to bring the Book of Mormon to the Native Americans, believed to be descendants of Lehi. Parley, along with Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer Jr., and Ziba Peterson, was called on a mission to the west. They took this mission seriously, covenanting to support each other and follow divine guidance. Joseph’s mother, Lucy, recalled the efforts of Emma Smith and other sisters to provide necessary clothing for the missionaries, highlighting the community’s support and dedication to their cause.
