Danielle describes a childhood dominated by her mum’s detentions under section.
Danielle’s mother was a loving, fun and colourful character. She knew everyone in the neighborhood. However, she also had bipolar disorder, which meant that she often experienced long and intense periods of depression. Danielle and her brothers often had to look after themselves. And, when their mum was detained in hospital, they would have to go and stay out of town with their Nan. This could be for weeks at a time.
At the time, nobody explained what was going on. Now, Danielle is ready to find out.
Presented by Danielle Manning, Sectioned is a five-part series that explores what it means to be sectioned under the mental health act and how it can change your life. Hear the stories of people with lived experience of being sectioned and discover what it means to have your freedom taken away for your own safety, and the safety of others.
Produced by Maddie Hickish. The Executive Producer is Nick Minter. It is a Wisebuddah production for BBC Radio 1.
