Sectioned: Episode 3

Listen Later

When Seni Lewis was sectioned, his story made the news. Danielle meets his mother, Aji Lewis. She describes what happened to her son, and why she decided to change the law. As a result of her son’s treatment in hospital, Aji Lewis lead a seven-year campaign to find out the truth about what happened.

In this episode Danielle learns about the physical restraint that is sometimes used during a detention under the mental health act. Restraint is used in order to ensure a vulnerable individual’s safety, and ensure the safety of those around them. But can it ever be dangerous?

Presented by Danielle Manning, Sectioned is a five-part series that explores what it means to be sectioned under the mental health act and how it can change your life. Hear the stories of people with lived experience of being sectioned and discover what it means to have your freedom taken away for your own safety, and the safety of others.

Produced by Maddie Hickish. The Executive Producer is Nick Minter. It is a Wisebuddah production for BBC Radio 1.
