  • 111 | Mindset, Self-Talk, And Storytelling
In this episode learn how mindset, self-talk, and storytelling collide to create an impact that can change YOUR life.
Louis Di Bianco is a wonderful storyteller. In fact, I'd say, the magic of his life's stories parallel the magic of the movies. How apropos that he's an actor!
He shares the story that is his life in hopes it will inspire, as well as demonstrate, how changing your story can change your life!
He even has a podcast dedicated to this mission, Change Your Story, Change Your Life.
Please be sure to check it out. I was even on his show!
    LOUIS' AWESOME QUOTE:
“Stories really express the deepest part of who we are.”
How do we make decisions about what we're gonna do? Louis challenges us to be active participants in our own drama versus being a spectator on the sidelines.
He encourages people to lose the victim story that could be holding them back and instead, adopt a victor story that empowers.
Listen, as he poses two questions to ask yourself, you choose the one you want: the limiting one, "Why me?" or the empowering one, "What's Great about this?"

  • 109 | 5 Truths About ADHD's Emotional Storms
    ENCORE EPISODE
ADHD’s emotional storms are one of the lesser known aspects of ADHD dealing with emotions and emotional regulation.
First of all, with ADHD comes intensity of emotions. Also, living with the stress that having intense emotional deregulation has on you is a life-long proposition.
Ironically, emotional regulation is the one aspect that, while it affects everyone with ADHD, receives little attention from scientists.
Consequently, you may ask, why isn’t there more information if it is such a huge issue? Probably, the most important reason is, that in research, there’s a rule concerning scientific method. This includes “…systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses (Google).”
As a result, we can’t apply scientific method due to the subjective nature of emotions.
While something perhaps makes you happy, that same thing may make me sad.
    JAMES' AWESOME QUOTE:
“We have difficulty organizing, maintaining focus, saying things we didn’t want to say, we can feel overwhelm, or didn’t plan something effectively …”
    ADHD’s Emotional Storms
James Ochoa calls the subjective experience of emotional deregulation, the “Emotional Distress Syndrome.” It’s the “cumulative effect of the neurological processing differences and behavioral challenges with ADHD.” It’s a chronic, and it’s a struggle. According to James, “The chronic, lifelong nature of ADHD–related stress can…become a syndrome akin to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”
Finally, here are 5 truths from page 45.
    1) It won’t disappear on its own. One way or another, you’ll have to manage your emotional distress for the rest of your life.
    2) If you choose not to manage the emotional distress, the EDS will continue to erode your sense of emotional, mental and physical well-being.
But don’t despair–the Emotional Distress Syndrome can be navigated.
    3) The Emotional Distress Syndrome can be managed.
    4) You are not broken.
    5) You can live a full, interesting, potential-reaching life.”

Listen, as she shares just what BVD's are and describes what affects between 5 - 10% of the population. It's a type of Binocular Vision Disorder, Vertical Heterophoria, which unfortunately is showing up in the ADHD population.
Symptoms include blurry vision, dizziness, headaches, imbalance, neck aches, and eye pain. In addition, some symptoms seemingly have nothing to do with the eyes, like overall fatigue.

  • 106 | How It Feels Being Misunderstood With ADHD
    ENCORE EPISODE
Scott Latty knows how it feels being misunderstood with ADHD. He also knows that ADHD itself is misunderstood. He’s out to change that by producing a film that will help people connect with that pain.
Scott shares with me details about his life which, are pretty common for folks with ADHD. He has trouble focusing, attending to details, and engaging with mundane tasks.
Yet, there’s a spark of genius shining brilliantly when the focus is on something interesting.
That’s why he knows getting this movie out there is important. It’s a big goal, but thinking big is something he’s really good at!
    Scott’s Awesome Quote:
“ADHD is not a virus, it’s not a disease, it’s nothing to be afraid of.”
    Misunderstood with ADHD
Scott recounts the feeling of never being understood. He explains, that even in how he expresses himself at times can be frustrating; hence, the title of his film, Misunderstood.
Although he knows that on occasion he comes off as argumentative, on the inside he’s thinking, “Listen to what I’m saying,” because he wants to be heard.
The misunderstandings that come from missing social cues and a having a racy mind can take their toll, but he keeps up a good attitude as he shares stories from his life.
Although the film never speaks of ADHD, it is the underlying issue, Scott says. His message is about acceptance. ADHD and other mental conditions should not invalidate a person.
Please go visit Scott on Facebook and let him know you heard him here because he wants to know what your thoughts are on what he’s doing or, better yet, ask how you can help him.

  • 105 | The Undiagnosed ADHD Child: Reflections From Forty Years Later
Mark Williams was the undiagnosed ADHD child growing up. He didn't really believe he was "thick and stupid" as he was called. But his anxiety and dyslexia looked like emotional and learning problems making childhood difficult. School and later, employment, didn't come easy. Fortunately, he eventually married the love of his life and together they had a baby. But what came next was anything but "happily ever after".
His wife suffered postpartum depression after a difficult childbirth. And soon, Mark too, plunged into despair. Finally, after seeing many doctors, at age 41, he did get a diagnosis of ADHD. With treatment came a new outlook on life and a new passion to help others who suffer just as he did.
    MARK'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"My story starts from in school when I was told I was thick and stupid."
    The Undiagnosed ADHD Child
What happens when you were the undiagnosed ADHD child? In Mark's case, he's decided to help other's like him. His efforts include helping create International Father's Mental Health Day in the UK. It's focus is to help raise awareness on men's mental health, specifically father's issues.
All dads suffer a special mix of stress because of the interrelationships that come with family. But when their biological make up includes any disease or disorder, that compounds the stress. As awareness and access to mental health services increases, the potential for successful outcomes like Mark's aren't just possible, they're probable. And after all, our dads and families deserve that!
Mark Williams does all he can to focus on fathers' mental health issues. He even created Father's Reaching Out, when he saw first hand, the need for support for men who experience postpartum depression. He explains it's like giving permission to open up as a father. Please be sure to check out his website, http://reachingoutpmh.co.uk, below or Tweet him!

  • 103 | ADHD Distraction Versus Derailment With The ADD Couple
What is the difference between ADHD distraction versus derailment? Upon first blush, they may seem like the same thing.
Listen, as my partner in crime, Brett Thornhill, and I talk it out on The ADD Couple podcast. Check us out on iTunes!
He joins me in discussing everything through the ADHD lens on that show. So, again, I'm sharing this episode about distraction versus derailment with you and hope you'll enjoy it and subscribe to both podcasts: The ADD Couple and See in ADHD.
    Awesome Quote:
“Derailment is something that we tend to internalize a little bit.”
    ADHD Distraction Versus Derailment
You know when something "comes up" and before you know it you aren't doing what you had, at some point, intended to do?
This can be something, like missing a day of work. Maybe your doctor's appointment ran late and then you stopped off to pick up prescriptions. Next thing you know, you figure you're better off just starting over tomorrow.
Your day just went off the rails. But was that because of distraction or derailment?
