  • 093 | ADHD And Asperger's: The Best Of Both Worlds
Who better to help folks with ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome than someone who lives with both?
Alina Kislenko, of ADHD Interrupted, joins me today to talk about the, what she calls, “side affects” of living with a brain like hers.
She coaches groups, parents, and individuals as well as hosts a talk radio show called, Strange Brains. Check out her website, ADHD Interrupted.
    ALINA'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“The ADHD gives my Asperger’s more social skills and the Asperger’s gives my ADHD more focus.”
    ADHD and Asperger’s
Describing the ‘civil war’ that is always going on in her mind, Alina shares her experience of living with both, ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome.
There’s a part of her that’s silly, creative, talkative, and spontaneous, enjoying meeting and talking to new people.
But it’s a side tempered by always wanting to be organized and safe, and thinks ahead contemplating all of the negative outcomes that could happen if not prepared…

  • 092 | ADHD Dropout To Doctorate, Learning How You Learn
Angela Baumbach joins me to talk about her journey from dropping out of high school to now obtaining her doctoral degree. The key she explains, is learning how you learn.
It’s because she figured that out that she now is able to help adults tap into their full potential in the workplace.
She consults in entrepreneurial and leadership training, so please check her out on LinkedIn.
    ANGELA'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“I was doing things my way and that was key to understanding that I do learn differently.”
    Learning How You Learn
Angela describes horrific memories of being bullied and excluded during her childhood and the teachers only made everything worse.
But out of those experiences of abuse and isolation, Angela grew into a powerful advocate for kids in schools.
As she explains, the schools don’t always individualize education, even with an IEP, because they don’t take into account differences in learning.
Now she translates that understanding into industry and business. Learning how you learn isn’t just for kids.

  • 091 | Non-Medication Strategies For A Happier Life With ADHD
Not everyone manages ADHD with medication. Here are 4 non-medication strategies for living a happier life with ADHD.
As a stay-at-home father who also works from home, Jordan didn't have a lot of opportunities to connect with dads like him, so he created his Twitter page in hope of doing just that.
    JORDAN'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“It took until I was in my 20's to confirm for myself that I was not stupid."
    4 Non-Medication Strategies
Here are the 4 Non-Medication strategies that Jordan suggests because they work for him:
    1) Nutrition - eat a well-balanced healthy diet
    2) Exercise - pick an activity and do that several times a week
    3) Stay Positive - through reading or podcasts
    4) Connecting to Nature - get outside
We also talk about using rewards like Groupon coupons and tools like a stand-up desk.

  • 089 | ADHD Misunderstood: Scott Latty's Big Idea
Scott Latty knows that ADHD is misunderstood. He’s out to change that. As he and I discuss, sometimes you do have to help yourself first in order to help others, but sometimes in helping others, you end up helping yourself.
In this episode, Scott shares details that are all too familiar for folks with ADHD. He has trouble focusing, attending to details, and engaging with routine tasks like ironing and filing.
Yet, there is that spark of genius that shines brilliantly when encouraged.
That’s why he knows getting this film out there is important. He knows it’s a lofty goal, but thinking big is something he’s really good at!
    SCOTT'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“I remember thinking to myself … I don’t focus, my brain is going round in circles and I can’t control it.”
    ADHD Misunderstood
Scott recounts the feeling of never being understood. He explains, that even in how he expresses himself at times can be frustrating; hence, the title of his film, Misunderstood.
Although he knows that on occasion he comes off as argumentative, on the inside he’s thinking, “Listen to what I’m saying,” because he wants to be heard.
The misunderstandings that come from missed social cues and a racy mind can take their toll, but he keeps up a good attitude as he shares some very poignant, and sometimes funny, stories from his life. You’ll have to listen to hear them.
Although the film never speaks of ADHD, it is the underlying issue. Scott’s message is “Accept it,” and talk to us. ADHD and other mental conditions do not mean a person has no talents or value.
I encourage you to go visit Scott on Facebook and let him know you heard him here and what your thoughts are on what he’s doing or, better yet, ask how you can help him.

  • 087 | How to Manage the ADHD Ability Gap
Here to explain the ADHD ability gap is Andrew Akre. Diagnosed in grade school, his experience offers him a unique view, which he uses to help his ADHD clients. As an ADHD Coach, he knows the difference between the pitfalls that come from unmanaged ADHD verses the successful outcomes that are possible through treatment.
His stories are great! He even describes the one, most important life-altering sentence he heard that forever transformed the way he thinks. Now, he's connected the dreaming part of his brain to the planning part of his brain, and the conversation those two halves are having are creating endless possibilities!
    ANDREW'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“The dreaming and planning parts of my brain started to talk to each other, for the first time, and I learned so much about myself and gained a lot of ability.”
    The ADHD Ability Gap
The ability gap is the difference between where the person is now in their abilities and what you are asking of them.
The job of parents, teachers, and coaches is to bridge that gap. Andrew and I go over a few ways to do that.
First of all, put steps in place that are reachable. In addition, shift your language to emphasize effort and growth.
He details the benefits of having a growth mindset and the WOOP strategy!
And, that's just during the first half of our time together. Andrew and I also delve into the topic of time-blindness, or as he says, time literacy.

  • 086 | You Don't Have to Struggle in Silence With ADHD
You don't have to struggle in silence with ADHD, especially once it's finally diagnosed.
In Carina Taveras' case, it wasn't until she was diagnosed with ADHD, a second time, before realizing that there are many resources available for things that didn't come easily to her.
A recent graduate, receiving her associate's degree, Carina is spending time this summer helping others who are just like her.
    CARINA'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“We mentor the kids on accommodations, allies, empathy, self-advocacy, and how to improve accommodations.”
    Struggle in Silence
Carina's assumption was that she would always have to struggle in silence. She was born with epilepsy and ADHD, but did not get treatment for ADHD until she was in college.
She shares with us her lifelong assumption that it was her bad habits preventing success. She had no idea that she was experiencing symptoms from ADHD.
Upon learning how to advocate for herself, she took an opportunity this summer to help mentor younger kids how to do the same for themselves at Camp Eye-to-Eye.

  • 084 | ADHA, The Attention Deficit Hyperactive Advantage
First of all, please watch this remarkable video on YouTube ADHA, The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Advantage.
Corey Tyrone McKinney joins me today to discuss his spoken word piece on YouTube.
Especially relevant is this line of his that sums up his attitude best:
“Stop looking at it as a disorder
and look at it for what it is … an advantage.”
    COREY'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“Us ADHD kids live in an inverted universe, where the things they tell us to focus on are distractions.”
ADHA, The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Advantage
Corey Tyrone McKinney is an actor who creates his own content.
ADHA, The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Advantage is the first spoken word piece he wrote.
Listen, as he describes the inspired production of his video, he’s also a great storyteller!
He shares how due to him finally embracing his ADHD, rather than ignore it, he was able to discover his true passion as an entertainer.
So, now he’s in California following his heart and making things happen for himself.
Which, is all the more awesome, you see, because he used to think that something was terribly wrong with him.
“This is the proof that neither do you. I found my niche and I found my purpose and you can do it too.”
Seems like Corey is on his way to making his dreams a reality.
