  • 072 | Which Of These 3 Parent Types Are You?
Which of these 3 parent types are you? Lynn Hegedus, a special needs educator and parent advocate, shares her story of career transformation and what she’s learned through the process including these 3 parent types.
It all started while at work one day, Lynn got the call that her daughter’s preschool had lost her 17-month old. As a result, when she left her office that day, it would be her last as an accountant.
At age 2, her daughter was diagnosed with Autism and Lynn began attending school with her. One thing led to another, and she went back to school, earning her Master’s in Education; therefore, she began teaching full time.
    LYNN'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“That’s what makes us so great … is the fact that we are so unique.”
    3 Parent Types
As an educator, Lynn recognizes there are 3 parent types:
    1) The parent who is super-involved and stays up-to-date on everything concerning their child.
    2) The parent who wants to be involved but doesn’t know what how or what to do.
    3) The parent who has no clue and doesn’t involve themselves in much of anything including knowing the teachers’ names.
Now, it seems like Lynn’s career is taking on yet another new direction. She has left the classroom and began independently championing for parents as a professional parent advocate. Her experiences both as a mother of a special-needs child and as a special-needs educator have her well prepared. Most of all, she wants to help others who are like her.
If you’d like to ask her questions or speak with her, you can email Lynn directly at [email protected]
Or, checkout her website. Be sure to sign up for her Edu-boxes that come directly to your door!
Listen, as we explore special-needs education and the power of parent advocacy.

  • 071 | How To Achieve Success Regardless Of Circumstance
If ever there was a person who can say that you can achieve success regardless of circumstance, it’s Tanner Gers.
Diagnosed with ADHD in fourth grade, Tanner already had some challenges ahead of him, but at 21, he was in a life-altering car accident that left him blind, for now anyway. You can hear about it on his own podcast, Creative Success, episode 000.
    TANNER'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“When you have these negative thoughts, choose a second one, choose a new one … choose a better one.”
    Achieve Success Regardless
Tanner’s accident is where his story, and his ideas on how to achieve success, really began. It was after injury that he became an accomplished US Paralympian, ranking at one point, 4th in the world.
He’s also published author, motivational speaker, and successful podcaster of two shows, The Athlete’s Summit and his newest venture, the Creative Success Podcast.
Be sure to check him out because he is amazing with extra zing!

It's a fact, some kids who learn differently thrive in a special kind of school.

She had a great idea! By visiting businesses and organizations who keep up with the latest and greatest best practices for the special needs community, her school implements them for her students, and the children, their families, and the community benefits.
    Cyndy's Awesome Quote:
“They really do want to be smart and they really do want to learn.”

  • 069 | ADHD Flash Guests With Spontaneity
Sometimes spontaneity is fun. Don't believe me? Listen in to today's episode and see for yourself.
Things didn't really go as expected for me today, so I created a plan B.
It started when I posted this on Facebook:
"If you are reading this right now, would you like to come on the See in ADHD podcast as a Flash Guest? Click on the link here and join me now!"
    ADHD Flash Guests
So, without any warning, I had 4 awesome individuals show up to the party: Michael, Larry, Andrew, and Steve.
They came in one by one and over the course of the show we talked about ... maybe 100 different things.
I don't even want to spoil it with a take away, you'll have to listen for yourself.
But suffice it to say, that there's something to be said for spontaneity. It certainly isn't all bad.
Please comment below about your thoughts on the show along with any show ideas of your own!

  • 068 | ADHD Mediaction Mishaps
Yes, ADHD medication mishaps vary in degree of severity. (spoiler alert) This episode is not one of those horror stories of overdose or death.
Instead, it's the personal recount of a series of unfortunate events that happened to a woman who knows SO much about ADHD medication. She wants to share her story because it may help you.
She also wants you to go go check out GoodRX online. It's a free resource that allows you to look up what medications are supposed to do. You can also use the service to lower your copay or lower your the cost of medications if you pay cash...sometimes up to as much as 70%!
    AGGIE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“No matter how many people tell you all these medications are the same ... they're not!”
    ADHD Medication Mishaps
ADHD medication mishaps; it's almost taboo to talk about for some folks, but the truth is they sometimes happen. My friend and colleague, Agnes Green, joins me again in this episode to discuss hers. One wasn't too long ago.
Agnes talks about her troubles with pharmacies, pharmacists, doctors, insurance companies, and yes, the actual ADHD medication, Concerta.
She also references what she's learned about ADHD medication and shares one of her favorite books on the subject, The New ADHD Medication Rules by Dr Charles Parker.
Of course, she can be reached via her website http://www.agnesgreencoaching.com

  • 063 | Talking About Talking ... and ADHD and Ukuleles
I could tell from her Facebook profile that she's been involved with speaking, but would she do a show with me on talking about talking and ADHD? I've been following Marie Angell on Facebook for a while and I know her to be clever and funny. So, I asked her and she said yes!
In this episode, Marie and I talk it out. We also discuss her past performances as a comedian, singer, and musician. She's a natural born entertainer and, to top it all off, she's also a writer working on a book. I can't wait for it to come out!
    MARIE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“Just having something that connects you with people ... is important to our well being, but also it's a lot of fun ... and can change your life!"
    Talking About Talking
When I asked Marie to join me today, I told her we could just talk about talking, and she was totally hip. Being talkative is a trait often found in folks with ADHD.
Marie plans on taking advantage of her loquaciousness by becoming a professional speaker. The conundrum she's in is that her ADHD interest is sparked by so many different things, it's not easy to settle on a single niche market for whom to speak.
Listen as we explore potential options as well as what's captured her attention now!

  • 067 | Maybe There's Someone Like Me With ADHD
"Maybe there's someone like me," Whitney M explains while talking about how difficult it can be to connect with others who have ADHD, especially if you're in a small town. On the internet, her discovery not only brought her connectivity but lots of acceptance and sharing of information, from strategies and tools, to advice on medications.
Listen in, as we delve into what she began blogging about. As she explains, she can't help that she has so many interests: crafting, writing, connecting with others, helping people, and ADHD.
Whitney's blog title isn't mentioned in the show or notes at this time, as well as I've omitted other identifying information, because she's taking a break right now and left it up to me whether to include it. So, I promise, if and when she starts up again, I'll post all of the active links.
    Whitney's Awesome Quote:
"People who don't have ADHD could learn a lot from people who do."
    Someone Like Me
Whitney initial intentions about blogging had nothing to do with money or business. She was just hoping to "find someone like me with ADHD."
She's a devoted wife and mother as well as a creative type, busy writing a book, maintaining a blog, making jewelry, scrapbooking, cake decorating, and more. Yet, she holds her audience in the highest regard making certain to take time everyday helping promote their small businesses by retweeting their posts on Twitter. (You know, it'd be rude not to.)

  • 066 I Think Differently And It's Not ADHD
Dawn Casey-Rowe will tell you she's an idealist who went into teaching in order to change the world. She discovered instead, that teaching changed her.
In fact, she's written a book about it, Don't Sniff the Glue: A Teacher's Misadventures in Education Reform.
Dawn is an educator who is passionate about the world of educational technology and discusses with me how especially kids who think differently can benefit if allowed to use the newest devices as tools in the classroom.
For example, a child who has genius ideas, but isn't so great at writing them down, can be free to expand on them in an amazing and productive way simply by being able to access a hand held dictation device, like a smart phone.
    DAWN'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"When you look at that different way of thinking ... the greatest entrepreneurs in the nation think like that."
    Think Differently
Listen in, as Dawn shares how she feels about the way she thinks and tells us the story of her own non-diagnosis. You see, while it does run in her family, it seems like she doesn't have it.
As it turns out, she and I have similar ways in which we process information. She calls it a spider-webby way versus a linear way. Thinking differently, apparently, isn't reserved for only those who have letters. (i.e.: ADHD, OCD, ODD, LD, etc.)
Dawn also points out, and gives examples of, successful entrepreneurs who, too, think differently, and are successful because, not in spite, of it. Therefore, the challenge for others is to think differently about what exactly these "letters" mean.
Be sure and check out her blog, Café Casey, and let her know you heard her here on the show!

  • 065 | Making Relationships Work (When Both Don t Have ADHD)
To bring us expert insights into making relationships work when one has ADHD and the other doesn't, I could think of no better person than Diane Dempster. She's an ADHD Coach and Parent Trainer, with firsthand knowledge. Her partner, Elaine Taylor-Klaus, and she, cofound Impact ADHD, an organization dedicated to helping parents help kids.

I was tickled to discover that, like me, she doesn't have ADHD herself but lives with family who does. She also shares with me the status of a non-ADHD child who grew up with an ADHD parent and she's the first person I've interviewed on the show who doesn't have ADHD.
She's also a wealth of knowledge on parenting kids with ADHD. (Plus, she's fun.) Listen in on us talking about some of the issues that arise when parents question if their kids are being naughty or if it's just neurological. She's also explains how choice leads to change and how a perspective of strength vs challenge leads you to look beyond any label.
    DIANE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“It's about assuming best intention and understanding the impact.”
    Making Relationships Work
From her interactions with a parent, a husband, kids and a business partner, as well as friends, colleagues, and clients, Diane shares what she's learned in terms of making relationships work when both people have "different kinds of brains".

  • 064 | ADHD Is A Diagnosis, If You Want To Be Correct
I've known Alison online for a while. In fact, she is the person who inspired me to write an article on ADHD as a label, just a little over a year ago.
In this episode, she and I discuss more than just that. Alison's passions include neuroscience and information. In fact, she tells me that most of the people she follows on Twitter are scientists, so I'm flattered I'm on her list.
Listen, as she shares her story of the original diagnosis of minimal brain disfunction given to her in childhood and removal of a brain tumor a few years ago. It's easy to see that her interest in learning and in all things about the brain, she comes by honestly.
As she puts it, she doesn't care about being right, she wants to be correct.
    ALISON'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“It's all in your brain and it's all there before you're born."
Seeing ADHD as a label, or referring to it as a label, simply undermines the authenticity of the diagnosis. To call it a label infers something that could be helped not to mention it's derogatory. For example, lazy, loser, weird...those are labels. They are assigned out of ignorance and misunderstanding.
As a diagnosis, it's no longer about moral character or ignorance. It's a legitimate clinical condition and while it's treatable, it isn't a condition that is curable. That warrants a whole other show.
Listen as we explore how to understand the science to help you differentiate between facts and hype.
