  • 062 | Tips On How To Have Summertime With Complex Kids
How do you define summertime success? When the kids (and/or you) have ADHD, summertime can be a double edge sword. On one hand, the stress of school is over and with that comes a welcome opportunity to exhale.
On the other hand, the structurelessness of summer can also mean that the kids are home, bored, and looking for entertainment (often too much video game time).
    ELAINE & DIANE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“Summer was the opportunity for them to learn because they are quintessentially experiential learners.”
    Summertime Success
Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus join me in this episode to explore how to have summertime success with your complex kids. They share with me the three tips below, but you can access more, for free, by clicking on the image below to receive your Parent's Guide to Motivation. I did get them to share one of the 10 on the show! But no spoiler alerts here, you'll have to listen in to our conversation and hear it for yourself. Plus, these two have so much expertise to share, I know you'll have many take aways, I sure did.
Here are 3 tips on how to have summertime success with your kids with ADHD. Listen for details on each:
    1) Spend time, in some way, exploring the world with your kids
    2) Set some intention
    3) Communicate with your child

  • 061 | Father's Mental Health
Mark Williams grew up being told he was "thick and stupid". He knew he wasn't, but he did suffer from anxiety and dyslexia, which looked like panic attacks and learning problems. So, school was hard and employment was too. Fast forward, he eventually married the love of his life and together they had a baby. But what came next turned their lives upside down.
After a traumatic birth, his wife suffered postpartum depression. Soon afterwards, Mark too plunged into despair. Finally though, after seeing many doctors, at age 41, he got his diagnosis. Mark has ADHD. And with treatment came a new outlook on life and a new passion to help others who suffer just as he did.
    MARK'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"Fight! Fight for yourself and get the right diagnosis."
    Fathers' Mental Health
I applaud Mark's efforts in helping to create International Father's Mental Health Day in the UK. in order to help raise awareness on men's mental health, specifically father's issues. My own dad fell victim to his bi-polar depression after going off his medication, committing suicide in 1987. His was the worst possible outcome.
All dads suffer a special mix of stress because of the interrelationships that come with family. But when their biological make up includes any disease or disorder, that compounds the stress. As we increase awareness and access to mental health services, the potential for successful outcomes like Mark's aren't just possible, they're probable. And after all, our dads and families deserve that!
Mark Williams does all he can to focus on fathers' mental health issues. He even created Reaching Out, when he saw first hand, the need for support for men who experience postpartum depression. He explains it's like giving permission to open up as a father. Please be sure to check out his website, or Tweet him!

  • 060.5 | Happy Father's Day with @adadwithadhd 2016 - 6-18-16, 12.12 AM
My dad passed too soon. Back in 1987, he committed suicide after going off his medication for bi-polar. I miss him every day, but Father's Day, perhaps, especially.
In this episode, I had a wonderful conversation with Mark Williams, known on Twitter as @adadwithadhd. In it, he shares his soul, which I hope brings you the hope you deserve if his story resonates with you.
I'm releasing this as episode 60.5 today and again tomorrow as episode 61. Tomorrow, in the UK, is International Father's Mental Health Day. As a tribute to all father's struggling with mental health issues, as my dad did, listen and know, you aren't alone.
We are all in this together.

  • 060 | 4 Special Worries Of A Special Dad
Having a special-needs kid makes you a special dad and also, as in my guests's case, Superdad. But that doesn't mean he doesn't worry. In fact, I'd say he also has special worries. Listen to today's episode, there are more than just four concerns worrying my guest.
Father's Day is this weekend and in the past I have done extensive writing about my own dad. He was after all, my superhero, in many ways. As we take to celebrating father's of all types these next few days, I thought it'd be great to hear from a dad of a young girl with special needs.
Please join me in visiting his Twitter page where you can read about a young woman with Autism, to whom her cousin is asking everyone to send birthday cards, so she won't have to suffer another lonely birthday. This girl and her story weigh on Lance's conscience, you see, his daughter too, has the diagnosis of Autism.
    LANCE'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“She can be the best friend that your kid could ever have, but if your kid doesn't give her a chance then there's no chance of that happening.”
    Worries for Special Dads
Lance Becvar is a special dad. In this episode he shares his greatest concerns for his girl, which include abuse and abduction...well, watch the news and you see why. That's some pretty heavy stuff at times. But equally concerning for him right now is thinking about his daughter, her friendships, and birthday parties.
Here are four concerns that Lance and I share while discussing kids with neurobiological differences and their challenges:
    1) bullying
    2) low self-esteem
    3) suicide
    4) trouble making friends

  • 059 | Are You Undiagnosed ADHD?
Undiagnosed ADHD is an estimated 85% of the total ADHD population. Reaching out to these adults isn't an easy task. First off, it's hard to get the attention of an audience who is unaware they have the condition. In addition, you need a compelling story to get people to want to see it. Finally, you need the financial backing to make a great film.
In this episode, Wes shares with us, how he came to discover his own ADHD and how he's going about helping others discover if they too, may be like him.
Listen as he and I discuss the details of his getting his diagnosis and the path that has lead him to creating this documentary about his life.
He knows that no one is their ADHD, but after experiencing an ignorant remark from a former employer, and feeling the shame intended, he also knows that educating everyone is where to start to make it better.
    WES' AWESOME QUOTE:
“Undiagnosed ADHD is the worse disability.”
Wes Gray was one of the 85% until finally, at age 53, he had a doctor confirm what others had been hinting at for years; although, sometimes these hints were more like direct attacks or questions sneered in a disdainful tone, such as "Are you A.D.D.?"
And as it turns out, yes, Wes Gray has severe ADHD, inattentive type. And that's how his documentary came to get its name.
"This film is an autobiographical documentary about my life and what it was like to go undiagnosed with severe ADHD for fifty-three years. It covers my struggles with common ADHD symptoms throughout school, work and relationships. It's going to be a candid look into the devastating results of going untreated for so long.
My hope is it will serve as a wake up call to those who have not been diagnosed, as well as for the skeptics who don't believe ADHD is serious (or for that matter even real). After watching this film I believe they will have a hard time defending that position. ~ Wes Gray"
I hope you will give what you can to support this cause because this is a film that needs to get out there.

  • 058 | Speaking About ADHD From Experience
My guest today, and I, had so much fun during our initial visit, we decided to just use it as the show! We talked about so many things, I don't want to ruin it for you. I will say though, his speaking about ADHD is from his experience, not textbooks.
Listen in, as he and I create my first backwards-style interview, meaning I don't introduce him until the end of the show.
    DAN'S AWESOME QUOTE:
"In addition to being charming...I'm enthusiastic, creative, engaging, and inspirational and I give all the credit to ADHD."
Dan wants folks to understand that ADHD "isn't all bad." He's a professional speaker who usually talks about topics like perseverance and career transitions, but is now ready to launch into the ADHD and neurodiversity space. He's a man on a mission.
He knows he's been the way he is his whole life and wants to share ADHD through speaking to others not just about it, but with it. As you'll hear in our conversation, Dan's mind overs wanders off on tangents all the time, but I bet you'll agree with me, they're fun and he's just as charming as he engaging.

  • 057 | The Double Side Of The ADHD Coin
ADHD can be so confounding because it's not just about attention or deficit or disorder. It can seem like the double side of a coin, with one side being the worst of some aspect and the other side, the very best aspect of that same quality. It can mystify and have events seem serendiptitious.
There is a certain serendipity to Salif's story. In a video submitted for his school's Serendipity in Science (see below), Salif Mahamane spoke of his experience studying environments and attention in grad school while unknowingly having ADHD. In fact, it was during this same time when his girlfriend, in an unrelated way, learned of the condition and told him, thus, leading to his diagnosis.
In this episode he shares his goal of creating an inclusive group about neurodiversity at his university next Fall.
    SALIF'S AWESOME QUOTE:
It's just not helpful to hear when somebody says,
"Well, everyone else in the world does it THIS way."
    Double Side of  ADHD
Salif shares his observations about the double side of ADHD based off his own experience. He's hip to the duality the condition seemingly brings out in people and how that affects his relationships, as a partner, a father, a coworker, and friend. After all, it's hard to explain that yes, you are earning a doctoral degree in psychology and yes, you don't notice when there's dirty dishes piled on the countertop.
He's definitely figuring it all out, and in our time together, he's very open and optimistic that he can help affect positive change around the stigma surrounding ADHD, now that he's aware he has it.

  • 056 | Can Diet And Nutrition Create Balance In ADHD?
I was fascinated with all that Dr. Robert Melillo brought to the table in this episode, discussing the role of diet and nutrition and how to create balance in the brains of those with ADHD and other neurobiological conditions.
Ultimately, he explains, in ADHD and other conditions like Autism, it's about networks in the brain that are very underdeveloped, under regulated, and under integrated with one another.
    ROBERT'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“Whenever you have something where there’s multiple systems involved, the problem is the brain.”
    Diet and Nutrition in ADHD
Dr. Melillo cites The American Academy of Pediatrics' 2012 findings, directly associating "leaky gut" and with Autism and related neurobiological conditions, like ADHD. He goes on to describe how diet and nutrition play an integral role in creating healthy brains and optimal brain functioning.
What fascinated me was the simple truth that it is indeed our brains that control all of body's systems, so naturally keeping the brain in balance also keeps these system in check.
Listen in as Dr. Melillo lays out the facts about maintaining a healthy diet for your child is key in helping to ensure they have a healthy and balanced life.

  • 054 Bad Habits & Boredom With The ADD Couple
Presented for your listening pleasure: an episode of another podcast that I do twice a week called The ADD Couple, with my friend and fellow ADHD Coach, Brett Thornhill.
He and I discuss everything and I mean everything. (Mostly because he is verbose and I'm loquacious, LOL)  But we always cover the broad range of topics ever musing through the ADHD lens.
    THE ADD'S AWESOME QUOTE:
“I've had such a busy day, you know, I've killed four aliens,
    and I saved the world...”
Barriers to attention, like bad habits and boredom, are often experienced by individuals with ADHD and make great topics to bring to coaching. Listen in, as my colleague Brett Thornhill and I discuss how barriers like these look in everyday life.
In keeping with our commitment to deliver short and sweet episodes, we decided to break this topic into not just a two, but a three-part series. So enjoy this continuation where we discuss the role of bad habits and boredom in creating barriers to attention.
