  • How to Increase Children’s Self-esteem Through Yoga

    Episode 37
Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to learn how yoga can increase children's self-esteem with author and illustrator Sarah Finniss.

Sarah Finniss is a 36-year-old certified yoga instructor, stretch coach, and personal trainer. She has a background in the arts and early childhood education. To add more to her accomplishments, Sarah is a newly launched children's book author and illustrator.

Her new children's book Iris' Magical Yoga Adventure invites its readers to escape with sweet Iris and her mom on an adventure into their imaginations as they explore famous landmarks around the world through yoga poses. The book isn't just about teaching the basics of yoga and mindfulness but provides an opportunity for children to learn about famous landmarks around the world through movement; engaging visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. It includes fun activity pages for learners to be creative and reinforce what they learned. This book plays into the mind-body connection.

On this Seeds of Sunshine episode, you will learn:

    • Building self-esteem and just finding balance when they're anxious is something that a lot of kids are looking for right now.
    • In her first book that Sarah wrote and illustrated, she hopes to inspire children to be creative in their learning.
    • How to become more inspiring to others by pursuing things that are challenging.
    • Sarah's message for children who try yoga for the first time is to just take their time with it, for certain stretches and poses work for some people and not for others.
    • Sarah remarked that when aligning movement and breath, we can change our energy by moving in different ways and also change our mindset.
    • There's a balance between the strength aspect of yoga and the letting go aspect,  which means building and finding that strength within ourselves, while at the same time kind of releasing any thoughts or emotions that we don't have control over.
    • To make meditation more enjoyable, Sarah recommends paying attention to small moments, such as when you're drinking your morning coffee or tea. Feeling the heat of the mug on your hands? Or if you're running, think about your feet hitting the pavement. If you're having a conversation with someone, putting the phone down, and just making the extra effort to be fully present and give your undivided attention.

  • Love and Music: A Rock’N’Roll Journey Through Alzheimer’s

    Episode 30

Join our hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to learn about a true love story,
as told by our fabulous guest Renee Schyjer, who was Frederick Moore's second wife. He was first married to the actress Demi Moore.

Renee fell in love and married the rocker Frederick Moore, who was an incredible songwriter, lyricist, and musician and recently published his memoir “It’s Not a Rumour, a Rock’N’Roll journey through life and Alzheimer’s together with Shannon Guyton, a Los Angeles-based freelance writer and content strategist. She’s an editor, ghostwriter, co-author, and mom of two amazing teens who thrives on helping the coolest people bring their stories to life on the page.

Frederick’s memoir is a sad and raucously funny story with so many facets, such as Freddy and Renee’s love story of true soul mates, his Rock'N'Roll career, his marriage to Demi Moore who still uses his name, and Frederick’s early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Frederick Moore rocked and rolled his way through life as “Rick,” “Skogie,” and “Freddy,” almost becoming famous. In the 1960s his bands Skogie and the Flaming Pachucos reached local stardom. The 1990s and early 2000s led Moore to the computer-programming world.

Renee Schyjer has the following message this Valentine's day:

    • The songs interspersed in Frederick Moore's memoir It's Not a Rumour- A Rock and Roll journey through Life and Alzheimer's not only emphasize Rick or Freddy's ( how he liked to be called) love of music, but they are a reminder that music can possibly be the antidote to Alzheimer's.
    • Renee talks fondly about Rick's philosophy of "being high on life" while staying away from drugs and being into music instead.
    • On stage, Freddy was like Kent Clark, Superman full of energy, jumping off the stage, and letting out his crazy personality, which was fun and entertaining to watch.
    • The importance of learning new things.
    • New treatments for Alzheimer's.

On this Seeds of Sunshine episode:

    • Turning life's events into music was what kept Freddy's creative juices flowing.
    • Even when Freddy's memory failed him, he always remembered music.
    • Renee's favorite song is called Street Life because it detailed Freddy's coming to LA from Minnesota and wanting to assimilate into the culture.
    • The beat of Freddy's songs is a reminder to live our lives on a high note, even when a devastating disease like Alzheimer's strikes.

  • Heart Health Talk After Her Coronary Stent with Karen Kunz, Who Ran Over 90 Marathons

    Episode 29

Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to find out how Karen Kunz,
a nurse and runner, who ran over 90 marathons took charge of her heart health to avoid open heart surgery, even though she passed the stress test. February is heart health month and our guest has a powerful message, especially for women athletes and non-athletes.

Karen Kunz is 67 years old from the Chicago area and one of 8 children. Karen has a B.S. in Exercise Physiology and a BS in Nursing. She started running in 1974(pre-Title 9 era) as a freshman in college and received XC & Track scholarship in her last 2 years of college. When she was 39, Karen’s daughter was born “brittle bones,” which inspired her to go back to college & learn medicine. From 1982 to 1989, Karen ran for Adidas professionally. She also coached for 2 colleges & was a private coach since 1980. Karen ran her first marathon in 1979 and about 1000 races total.

Karen Kunz has practical and wise advice regarding fitness, running, and heart health:

    • Running is a microcosm of life. You need to keep going, as you never know what you can accomplish.
    • Karen ran for Adidas professionally and has been grateful for the opportunity.
    • At 67, after Karen got a coronary stent to open up her left anterior descending artery, she is still running marathons. Her next big race is the Tokyo marathon, which she will run representing her Arete team, the Sacramento branch.
    • Karen's message for all women is to trust their instincts just like she did when the stress test came back fine. She had to push for a heart flow test because she had worked with cardiac patients and knew what to ask for.
    • Getting a baseline is quite important in taking control of your health.

On this Seeds of Sunshine episode:

    • Learn to be proactive with your fitness and your health.
    • Women's heart issues manifest differently than men, so pushing for the correct tests can make the difference between making it alive or not.
    • Learn how Karen thrived after girls were allowed to play sports just like the boys.

Lynne has three grown children and two grandchildren. She and her husband have a small farm on the coast of Northern California.

Lynne Bowman has the following healthy tips:

    • Don't eat out of a bag, alone, and all day. Instead, make cooking a communion and a community.
    • Involve your kids in cooking with you and growing their own vegetables so they eat what they produce.
    • We need to develop better table culture and manners.
    • Lynne healed her diabetes and wants you to also take control of your health.

On this Seeds of Sunshine episode:

    • Lynne explains the importance of reading labels & why her "snarky grandma"  diet will keep you young & healthy.
    • Eating real food, mostly plants, not too much, and some meat, while avoiding sugar & white flour is the ideal diet.
    • Lynne wrote her book to inspire everyone to eat as if they were diabetic or heart patients to stay happy and healthy.
    • Lynne shares her secret to making the most delicious and healthiest brownies; they are basically vegetables and have some nuts with no flour, or sugar.
