    3 Reasons to Listen:

    3. Learn what’s next for all of us after COVID-19.

    Resources
    • Q&A With Tim Winders – SGC Extra

Episode HighlightsWhere Are We Right Now?
    • The coronavirus is shutting down much of the world. A visualization of this is the US economic downturn in 2008, which Tim talks about in detail in the podcast.
    • Two COVID-19 schools of thought: (a) people who insist it's a conspiracy theory; (b) people who are operating in a lot of fear and panic.
    • The reality: Some people are sick and dying, and some are going to be impacted financially by the situation.
    • Tim believes that everything is going to be okay, but we also have to acknowledge all of those realities.

    How Did We Get Here?
    • The first case of this coronavirus was detected in Wuhan, China, in late December of 2019 and has since spread rapidly.
    • We thought it was a concern of another country, and it wasn't going to impact us much—we were wrong.
    • The government has set travel restrictions, canceled events, and establishments have shut down. Tim talks more about this ripple effect in the podcast.
    • We all learned the term “social distancing.”

“We're seeing how truly shaky a house that's built on sand can be.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisHow Do We Make Sense of Where We Are?
    • God is sovereign, but God didn’t bring any of this on to us. We’re just in a world where a lot of stuff happens—a fallen world.
    • Everything will eventually be okay. However, we need to operate with wisdom.
    • We need to learn from experiences or mistakes we’ve made. Likewise, we need to help each other as much as we can.

    COVID-19 and the Economy
    • Where we are now doesn't remind him of the major financial turmoil in the past. People in the United States are people of great faith in general.
    • However, we’re still facing something we’ve never seen before.
    • Money is not accelerating and moving through the system.
    • Unless we get tested and people get taken care of, only then can we know for sure what’s going to happen.

    The Call to Action
    • We are indeed going to be negatively impacted by this—individually and culturally.
    • The big call to action would be a renewal of faith. Strengthen your faith.
    • The government, organizations, and businesses are essential. But put your faith in the Heavenly Father that created us.

“We have that much resolve, that much resiliency. I think we're a people of great faith in general.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisWhat’s Next for Culture and Society?
    • Some people might consider it negative, but it can be positive. How? In a way, we’ll put less emphasis on sports, celebrities, and universities—which put people in incredible debt.
    • We can make some shifts in our society, even in religion and church.
    • The way we do churches in first-world countries is different from the scriptural foundation of the way the church was designed.
    • The mobile workforce is powerful. We can hope that it'll be a byproduct of what we see with culture and society.

    The Bottomline
    • It's time to reassess and evaluate what's really important to us.
    • What relationships are meaningful? What's essential for us from a spiritual standpoint, how we live, function, and operate?
    • Right now, there is an excellent opportunity to connect digitally. But after this, we may also have a greater appreciation for social interaction.
    • Maybe it’ll help us live a simpler life.
    • We need new types of leaders to emerge; we need a change in our political arena.

“I am very hopeful that a new type of leader will step up and emerge from this. And, really, what I hope is that we develop a new normal, that we focus on what's important.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisFocus on Yourself
    • If you need help, ask for it. Try not to get overwhelmed or discouraged.
    • It's vital to nourish your soul. Watch what you're reading, what you're watching, and the other media you consume.
    • Get things done—be productive.

    Focus on Others
    • Reach out to people—communicate, and check-in with them.
    • Use social media for good. Use it to connect with people or to put some good out there in the world.
    • Don’t let the negative things in the social media rabbit hole consume you.

“Have faith that everything’s going to be fine. Have faith that all is going to be okay.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisWhat’s Next for Us
    • We don’t know how long this will last and whose business will get the most impact.
    • What's happening in the present is a great time to evaluate where your business is.
    • Look at where you’re spending money.

“I believe that so many people are going to get witty inventions and ideas and clever and creative things. And you never would have done that if we weren't forced to think differently—if we weren't forced out of our comfort zone.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

On “Sabbatical” and Taking a Break
    • A sabbatical is a time to rest and learn more about yourself.
    • It creates a space away from your usual routine. It brings rest and rejuvenation to the soul, spirit, and mind.

Burnout is common in the teaching profession. Taking a break can improve the overall satisfaction of educators with their jobs.

    • Throughout their travels, Shawn and Kristen love to pick up one thing from each country to represent their trip.

    Overcoming Fears and Unforeseen Challenges

    • Risk management is necessary.
    • Being stuck in a foreign country where you don't speak the language can be challenging.
    • Traveling requires us to become uncomfortable and stretch our comfort zones.

“When you’re facing fears or uncertainty about how it’s going to happen, go back to your ‘why.’” - Click Here to Tweet ThisOn Managing Schedules
    • Shawn and Kristen usually don't have plans when they arrive in a country. They manage their schedules by design.
    • They discover activities through Google and talking to people.
    • Shawn and Kristen learn from locals and other travelers in the area. They plan their calendar as they go.

    Biggest Round-the-World Surprises
    • Kristen used to be very careful about what she eats. During her travels, she cannot be very particular about health and wellness because they work on a budget.
    • For Shawn, the language barrier surprised him the most. He learned to improvise ways to communicate with people.
    • They were also surprised by how technology has changed over the years.
    • It would help to invest in learning basic language skills.

“I can’t control a lot of what’s happening right now. I can control how I’m reacting to it.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisAdvice for Adventure Seekers

    About Bart

Bart Christian is the Founder and CEO of Southwest Training Systems Inc. and  SchoolFoodHandler.com, leaders in the school nutrition industry. He is also the author of a top-selling book series called Simple Solutions. Aside from being a business coach, he is a nationally recognized speaker and expert in leadership communication.

If you want to reach out to him, the best way is through his organization’s website. Alternatively, you can contact him through his Facebook or Twitter.

    Episode HighlightsThe School Nutrition Industry
    • There are about 100,000 public schools across the United States.
    • Lunch ladies are heroes as they provide nutrition for children.
    • Some regulations have pushed change toward more processed food instead of nutritionally sufficient home-cooked meals.
    • A hungry child cannot function. Sadly, nutrition is not viewed as an essential part of the education program.
    • The average child in the public school education system only has 11.5 minutes to eat.

    Present Health Issues
    • Allergens are on the rise in our society.
    • Vaccination isn't bad, but we live in a hyper-vaccination culture.
    • We now live in an age where we’re terrified of getting sick.

    Bart’s Personal Start
    • As a general manager, his company started buying other companies. One business that was only a fraction of their profit became extremely profitable.
    • Bart went to Arizona to start a distributorship. His best friend, who was going to be his business partner, died on one of their trips.
    • It was difficult for him to move forward, but God answered his prayers.
    • Tune in to the full episode to listen to Bart’s story about God’s plan for him!

    Experiences in Business
    • Southwest Training Systems is his core business, and they provide materials for public school cafeteria environments.
    • It took an estimated 3–5 years to build the company. As if it was God’s plan, business suddenly boomed at the end of their fourth year of operation.
    • All of his speaking and writing experience evolved from his experience in the school nutrition niche.
    • There is power in writing something on paper, which is why he keeps a daily journal.

    Challenges in Business
    • The obvious challenge in starting any business is money.
    • You have to be creative in how you acquire and spend money.
    • Budgeting is also essential.
    • He feels he performs better under pressure instead of a calm environment. Unfortunately, this resulted in self-sabotage.

“I have taken bad situations and made them exponentially worse, just by saying a couple of things. But if I took a deep breath and thought about what I was going to say, it would have turned out a lot better.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisBart’s Daily Routine
    • He prayed a lot and woke up early every day to read the Bible or something inspirational.
    • Meditation helped him gain peace and overcome the challenges in his life.
    • Reduce the noise in your mind.
    • God does not compete with the noise of the world. You can only listen to His voice when you are quiet.

Insights on Zig Ziglar’s Attitude“Look at other people as if they're important, and honor what they say.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Zig Ziglar is a huge factor and inspiration in his life.
    • When you listen to someone, think about how important they are to you and how much you honor them.
    • We focus too much on what we’re going to say next instead of listening intently. There is a difference between listening to hear and listening to apply.
    • There are more good people in the world than bad.
    • Look at everyone you come in contact with, no matter who they are. as if they have a sign around their neck that says, “Treat me as if I'm important.”

“There are vastly more good people in the world than there are bad. And those people who spend their lives focused on watching the news, reading the paper—absorbing all the bad stuff that's going on in the world—their natural reaction is to think the worst of everyone.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisThe Steps to Good Communication
    • The first step is to treat others with importance and appreciate what other people have to say.
    • The second step is to experience gratitude.
    • The third step is to forgive. Forgiveness is a decision

“Good communication is simply built on a habit of appreciation for the other person.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisAttitude Toward Changing for the Better
    • Learning is a decision, and communication is a skill you can develop. Unlearn the mindset that you cannot change and everyone else is the problem except you.
    • What are your happiness and peace worth?
    • You cannot control your circumstances and situations, but you can control how you react to them. E + R = O. Events plus your Reaction equals Outcome.
    • Think before you say something to improve situations.
    • We have things inside of us that came from God for us to give to other people, and it’s our job to ask his guidance.

“I used to look at the big groups and go, ‘How can I get all these people on my side?’ But when I stopped, and I said, ‘How can I make sure that I don't miss that one person in this audience that needs this message?’ Everything changed.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    About Sherrie

Sherrie Sokolowski is a believer, businesswoman, mother, and wife who uses her expertise in the live events industry to help others. Working from a nonprofit to landing an apprenticeship with Bill Glazer, Sherrie has earned quite a lot of experience in planning events. Episode HighlightsSherrie's Beginnings
    • Sherrie landed an apprenticeship at Glazer-Kennedy Insider's Circle (GKIC) with her outstanding hard work in a nonprofit organization
    • She was not entirely sure she fit in the room when the team had meetings. Regardless, Sherrie poured her best effort into being the Executive Assistant.
    • She took this as a learning opportunity, listening to terms, getting insights, and familiarizing herself with operations and the business.
    • She learned more about organizing live events by partnering up with an events planner and taking these learnings into practice.
    • Sherrie was not a devout Christian until she met people and went through experiences that enlightened her spirituality.

    Trends in Live Events Marketing
    • Virtual events will take over traditional or live events.
    • Live events are opportunities to help people get to know your brand better and gather a group of like-minded people to learn from speakers and attendees.
    • Live events are a growth marketing opportunity.
    • Before, a live event was simply a venue for learning. Nowadays, businesses also use them to build their tribe or list.
    • Events incorporate the use of new technology like social media for things like photo contests. However, live events mainly stand as an avenue to bring people together.

Tips for People Thinking of Having Live Events
    • Listen to people. Recognize that everybody needs help with something, and everybody wants to help. You may find that other people have good ideas to share, too.
    • A sense of accountability is essential, especially as a solo entrepreneur, because you would be reporting to yourself. Owning up to your responsibilities makes the difference.
    • Don't give up. If you don’t have the drive, then you are not chasing the right dream.
    • Make sure you’re chasing the right dream, one that aligns with your values.
    • Learn more about how this connects with organizing live events by listening to the full podcast.

Glowing From A Relationship with Christ“It's really fascinating to stand back now and look at how things have changed because of what Christ can do for you. • Sherrie previously did not have a relationship with God.
    • You exude a different glow when you fall in love with Christ. Sherrie's relationship with her husband led her to find Christ, and she became more Christ-like.
    • After allowing this openness to Christ to happen, she decided to have herself baptized.
    • The realization of a faithful relationship with Christ comes with peace.

    • Being a Christian and being miserable at work makes a miserable Christian—a bad combination.
    • Sometimes we resort to controlling our life instead of giving it up to the Lord.
    • Your practice reflects on your actions, and people begin to treat you as a follower of Christ.
    • We tend to forget to check in with ourselves because of how busy we are. We need to recognize we need help from Him and check where we stand with Him.
    • Do you feel overworked, tired, and stressed? Find Christ, and He will show you rest.

“If you don't have that drive, it's because you're not chasing the right dream, so make sure that you're chasing the right dream that is in alignment with your values. And if you've got that, then the drive is going to come.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisDealing With A Difficult Family Matter

Believers Impacting Other People's Lives“The kind of people that I love to work with—people who have goals in mind and some sort of vision, because then that will overcome the obstacles that are going to come up during the conversation.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • The best persons or customers to work with are those who have a vision for their event. They are open-minded and can overcome obstacles.
    • Believers can impact other people's lives by staying grounded in their spirituality. In Sherrie's case, her faith translates into her actions, and she serves as a light for her clients.
    • Even with or without quoted scriptures, we have the power to impact and touch other people's lives with our grounded spirituality.

“My mother in law made a great point—she's like, ‘Sherrie, you’re their light. Continue to be who you are, because you may open their eyes to who Christ is.’ And I just kept remembering that and thanking the Lord for putting me in that situation of being able to be that light for people.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

Episode HighlightsRob’s Journey from Business to Ministry
    • Rob started his business at the age of 16. When he turned 20, he bought another company which his father started.
    • He juggled several things. At the age of 20, he got married and was running a company while still in college.
    • He had a lot of family members who are ministers. In 2008, he applied automation in his businesses and was able to earn a considerable revenue, which mostly goes to missions.
    • It started with helping missionaries. Then, he became a lead missionary coach who turned him into the minister he is today.

    Rising Above Challenges
    • It was a combination of his entrepreneurial side and the spiritual side.
    • The spiritual aspect played a huge role in raising funds for missionaries.
    • His actions were inspired by scripture. He used his knowledge and resources and sowed them to the people who needed it.
    • He believed God had given him more, and he gained so much by coaching missionaries.

    Challenges in Business and Ministry
    • Start-up companies often start enthusiastically, and then they realize that things are becoming mundane.
    • There is a need to take that excitement and use it in setting up processes that will keep them from getting stuck in the mire. One way is to replicate yourself and do some automation.
    • The biggest deterrent to growth is people not wanting to do the work.

    Leadership Insights
    • As leaders, it is necessary to invest in your people’s dreams.
    • This can help change their present and everyone else’s future.

    On Being Open
    • The things that we are hiding are holding us back. When we release those things, we gain the power to overcome it.
    • Most of the time, our walls of protection keeps us from achieving our destiny.
    • In his case, help came from his faith community. He opened up to people and let them into his world. His life started to expand and accelerate then.
    • We need to find the people who have our best interests in their hearts.

    • People tend to blame themselves, God, or even other people. This is when they start to build up walls in their lives.
    • If people continue building walls brick by brick every single day, it inhibits them from realizing their life’s purpose.
    • Remember God’s love and believe in His power to heal and lift you from every challenge and tragedy.
    • People who are hurt must go beyond themselves to see the hurt in others.

    • There are a lot of places where you can get help. Find a good church and a family of believers.
    • Remember that you are not alone. Find the people who believe in the best in you and want to see you recover from your situation.
    • Be careful of people who do not want to genuinely help but only look out for their interests.
    • Restoration is possible.

    • Rob discovered that when he is motivated by money, he only creates trouble and turmoil.
    • Business ministry means focusing on solving a problem and helping others to gain financial blessings.
    • You can reconcile money, business, and ministry when your heart is in the right place.

    On Mastery
    • Mastery, as defined in the dictionary, is comprehensive knowledge or skill and subject or accomplishment.
    • Mastery does not happen overnight. It can happen by getting wisdom from many directions. It can also occur because you've done the work, and you've accomplished skill and become excellent at it.
    • For Rob, you gain mastery not because of everything you've done and the mistakes you've made but with a community of people who are journeying together and helping others avoid the mistakes they've made.

  • Business As Mission, Money, Capitalism & Socialism | Q&A with Michael Baer

There is a persisting misconception that ministry and business are two completely different worlds. One is holy and for God, and the other is secular and for money. However, there is a movement that integrates both and believes it's even beneficial for the ministry. This movement is called “Business As Mission.”

In today’s episode, listen to Michael Baer explain just what “Business As Mission” stands for. He shares his opinion on why we shouldn’t see wealth creation as something negative and how it could actually be aligned with God’s purpose if we do it out of love.

Make sure to tune in to our podcast to find out how you can spread God’s gospel through your business.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Know how to integrate ministry and business in your daily life.
    2. Learn how love is present even in the cutthroat world of business.
    3. Explore ideas about the capitalist system, our society, and our misconceptions about ministry.

    About Michael

Michael Baer is a pastor, theologian, and an entrepreneur. He is the author of Business As Mission, a book about the movement behind integrating ministry and business in our daily lives. He is also the  founder and CEO of the Third Path Initiative. This professional organization trains and equips future business as mission (BAM) leaders.

If you want to reach out to him, the best way is through his organization’s website. Alternatively, you can connect with him through LinkedIn.

Episode HighlightsMichael’s Definition of “Business as Mission”
    • He felt his pastoral and church planter roles were becoming a barrier instead of a bridge.
    • Being in the business world is an extension of God’s calling.
    • There is no division and hierarchy. It’s meant to be a seamless experience of Christ in your life.

“Business is the natural extension of my relationship with Christ into wherever He has placed me.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisHow Business Connects People
    • Business As Mission started as a spontaneous idea in the mission field in Kazakhstan.
    • It has spread to many parts of Asia and other continents and has now become global.
    • Today, it is a recognized worldwide movement.

    Reaching the Unreached
    • There are still parts of the world that have no sustainable gospel witness, church, ministries, and Bible in their language.
    • They are concentrated primarily in North Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. Around 95% of the unreached people groups live here.

    The Hierarchy of Calling
    • It is wrong to believe that full-time ministry is the pinnacle of God’s calling.
    • In reality, we should respond to whatever God’s call is for us.
    • We're equal in Christ, and there's no high or low calling.

Relationship Between Ministry, Business & Money
    • We have to start thinking of the Church as the assembly of the body of Christ, and not a mere building.
    • God created the concept of wealth creation to support and serve society.
    • Money is simply a medium of exchange and totally amoral. Money isn’t the root of all evil; love of money is.

“It (religion) is what I'm doing to get God's attention and God's approval, and the whole gospel is built on the opposite of that. Everything that starts with me trying to get God's attention, or earn blessings, or please him, or whatever is on the wrong foot.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisOn Funding the Kingdom
    • Some people are actually sincere and generous when it comes to money.
    • However, there are some prosperity messages that only selfishly use the kingdom to justify what they do spiritually.
    • God taught about foolish and selfish rich men, but he didn't advocate to be poor.
    • Institutions all have a purpose, and that includes businesses.

    Capitalism and Socialism
    • Capitalism has flaws, but it doesn't mean communism is any better.
    • In every system, there is someone at the top.
    • Many of us are ignorant of these systems. There is no perfect system.
    • In the book of Acts, the early believers themselves adopted voluntary socialism, but when it is forced, it's broken.
    • The fundamental issue is the heart of man.

    Christian Business vs. Kingdom Business
    • The point is to look not only at home but also at the world.
    • Many Christian business movements only teach how to be a better follower in comfortable settings, such as their hometown.
    • He now believes there should be no distinction.
    • All the outward traffic of religion has no power. Only the living Christ in us has power.

“Everybody in your life, everybody in that business, is a stewardship from God. He has given you those relationships to manage, to nurture, to develop, and so forth.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisLove in a Competitive Industry
    • It’s actually impossible to not have love in business.
    • Every relationship in your business is a stewardship from God.
    • The heart of love is to meet needs. Even creating a product is all about love as it solves a problem.
    • Serving customers, employees, and employers are all forms of love.
    • The two traits of a leader is a professional will to win and personal humility to not take the credit for it.

Personal Application of Love in Business
    • As a chief development officer, he develops the cultures and the processes in the business that support those things.
    • Their mission is to change lives one job at a time by providing a chance to earn a competitive wage and an opportunity to increase their skills.
    • Every business in every industry has a higher purpose.
    • Seek the Lord for the purpose of your business. Don't settle until you understand God's why.

“I would want to encourage people in the pastoral ministry, particularly people in business, don't make the other person the enemy.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisThoughts on the Traditional Missions Model
    • The problem with this model is that it is expensive and inefficient.
    • The traditional funding mechanisms are fading away rapidly.
    • The next model will be earning a living with people in foreign places, as they spread the gospel.
    • Muslims are a great example of how having a job and integrating with the culture is more effective in spreading the faith.
    • Excellence is a biblical principle, whether you’re a businessman or a minister.
    • Knowing that God will bless you isn’t a license to be lazy.

“The heart of love is to meet needs. The heart of love is to serve. The heart of love is unself. You could live that every day in business.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    Annie’s Journey Through Ministry

    • Annie worked in mental health clinics. Working with therapists prepared her to work with pastors.
    • She worked support roles in different churches.

Insights and Observations on Mental Health
    • Annie has a degree in psychology. She dealt with a lot of teenagers and families.
    • Social media has a significant contribution to mental health issues among young people.
    • At an early age, people are already concerned with their purpose in life. Teenagers constantly feel the need to combine performance with perfection.

“Sometimes grabbing those lessons from my childhood, from my past, from my home helps me to remember that there's more to life than work.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisDifference Between Coaching and Therapy
    • Therapy has a vital role to play on people's journey to a fruitful ministry.
    • Therapy is concerned about healing and wholeness. It looks at how your experiences in life have led you to where you are today.
    • Coaching is goal-focused. It takes you from where you are today to where you want to go in the future.

    Women in the Ministry
    • Annie grew up in a family where women in the ministry were honored and encouraged.
    • In earlier times, it was unusual for women to be in teaching roles.
    • At present, we live in a society where women have access to learning just as men do.

    Faith in Times of Grief
    • Annie's then-husband, Kevin, passed away when she was 32. She lost him at a time when the future looked so hopeful and exciting.
    • She was “living in the tension” between faith and reality.
    • Missionaries from other parts of the world prayed with her. She witnessed a lot of miracles in the process.
    • There are many times she questioned why certain things had to happen. Faith means knowing that sometimes reality does not line up with your plans.

“There was this faith, this belief that God was bigger than the news that we were getting, that God is more than the bad report.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisGetting Back on Track
    • Annie accepted that she cannot always control things.
    • By doing so, she was able to focus more on other people's needs.
    • She remarried, took a master's degree, and got her life moving again.

How Annie’s Experiences Influenced Her Leadership
    • Her experiences helped her become more empathic with different life issues.
    • In ministry, the feeling of isolation is the biggest challenge.
    • She realized the need to mentor more pastors.

“I don't know everything that there is to know about leadership, but they don't either. But when we get together with the goal of strategizing, we can make an impact.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisIdeal Clients
    • Annie's ideal client is an executive director or a pastor leading a team of five or more people.
    • She focuses on managing people issues.
    • She works with team leaders who are managing other people in their organizations.

    Accelerated Coaching
    • Annie guides leaders in strategizing to solve their most pressing problem in 6 weeks.
    • People usually consult her on things that are not going well with their lives. She points out the issues they need to address.
    • Mere communications training will never solve the problem.

“What He wants for us is for the redemptive story to unfold in our lives. And so you hold on to that faith, knowing that the reality sometimes doesn't line up with that.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisThe Four Affirmative Communication Styles
    • The four communication styles are based on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator.
    • The problem solver is someone who takes action. When they see a problem, they immediately figure out what needs to be done to address it.
    • The bridge builder is the opposite of the problem solver. They want to bring people together to find common ground.
    • The strategic thinker dives deep into the root of the problem. They prefer brief, concise, and logical communication.
    • The compassionate connector is the opposite of the strategic thinker. They solve problems on practical grounds.

    Annie’s Future Projects
    • She is looking into podcasting and more writing.
    • Annie is planning to launch an ebook on communication styles.

If you want to reach out to him, you can do it through Pitch Practice’s website. Alternatively, you can contact him through LinkedIn.

    Episode HighlightsKevin’s Personal Pitch
    • Most people reach a certain point in business through brute force but don't know how to expand to a broader audience.
    • These people don’t know what they already have and how to create and distribute new content to attract new audiences.
    • His job is to solve these problems in an expanding business.
    • He also helps his clients create a repeatable and systematic process in generating content.

    Fractional Partners
    • Kevin created a process wherein a group of experienced executives can work on key roles in different companies simultaneously.
    • This only demands less time for the same results.
    • Being a fractional consultant can be confusing and needs absolute focus for each client.
    • What you can learn and apply to one company also applies to other companies.
    • The job of a startup is to find a repeatable business model.

    Kevin’s Journey in Business
    • He had to work five different jobs to pay for bills and tuition.
    • He describes himself as the lowest-paid MBA in Georgia State history.
    • Kevin worked long hours preparing for an IPO without earning money for himself.
    • He realized that to make real wealth, you need ownership. Hence, he started his own business.
    • He thrives on change as it brings out new opportunities.

“You have to have ownership to make real wealth.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisFinancial Challenges
    • He and his partners borrowed money to grow the business.
    • Their client, Motorola, split and went away, which created a big problem for them.
    • He absorbed all the debt caused by the split, but he took his client’s equity in exchange. He ended up selling his company in 2012.
    • Don’t borrow money if there is nothing tied to it.

    • Clear communication is crucial in managing a relationship.

    Kevin’s Personal Life
    • Kevin loved his hometown Conyers, Georgia, where he spent his childhood.
    • He started playing soccer at age 7.

    • The tech industry isn’t that friendly to believers.
    • He was afraid of not saying the acceptable thing to other people to get the gigs.
    • God made him realize that Kevin needs to stand up for what is right, and He will provide the rest.

“Most startups fail. But if you have two entrepreneurs, and one of them can articulate their idea really well, and the other one can't, the one who can articulate it's going to win every time.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisHow Pitch Practice Came To Be
    • He was too quick to create a new company after selling his previous one.
    • An organization called Venture Lab from Georgia Tech listened to pitches and criticized it.
    • He realized that it was a constructive idea, and he brought it to Atlanta Tech Village.
    • From then on, he has listened to about 3500 pitches.

The Mindset and Attitude on Pitching
    • Everything is a pitch all the time.
    • The idea behind the pitch is never to close the sale; it's to advance the relationship.
    • The same goes with sharing the gospel. No one's going to listen to you unless you know them as they know you.
    • There is a certain amount of faking you can do as you won’t always be confident.
    • When you have identified, validated, and articulated a problem in the marketplace, that’s the heart of the pitch.
    • Nobody cares about your solution; they care about their problems.
    • If you can’t alleviate a problem, you have no value.

Episode HighlightsLessons From The Netflix Story
    • Don't let the naysayers get you down.
    • Stay positive and passionate. Entrepreneurs love to be positive.
    • If you see a vision, work backward to attain it.

“People love to be negative. Entrepreneurs love to be positive. Stay positive, stay passionate. That's a key lesson.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisWorking on the Vision
    • They looked forward and envisioned moving the movies to the net world.
    • They kept their vision valid in their heads, no matter how long it's going to take to fulfill it.
    • It’s good to have a vision, but you must work on the present value as well.

The Three Pillars of Silicon Valley
    • First, Silicon Valley has a risk culture, where failure is not judged harshly.
    • Second, it has a massive amount of intellectual capital. The entrepreneurial zones are all around the universities.
    • Third, it has a set of wealthy people who are willing to give 1% of their wealth, knowing they may not get it back.

    The Risk Environment
    • Control comes only after success.
    • Most of the people in Silicon Valley have a rebel mentality.

“You need to actually diversify the people that are surrounding you to get the best ideas on the table.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisSilicon Valley’s Underbelly
    • First, non-diversity. Silicon Valley has a “bro culture.” There are a lot of white male engineers who develop young white male engineers.
    • It's not about who you are; it's about the best ideas. You can't have the best ideas if you have the same type of people surrounding you.
    • Second, Silicon Valley has a real imbalance of personal and professional lives. A lot of people are overworking, which puts their mental health at stake.

“We need to always recognize that balance is important, and getting unbalanced leads to bad things.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisWhat Makes Mozilla Unique
    • Mozilla is a non-profit and values-based organization.
    • It upholds that the World Wide Web links people together for the good of the world.
    • It believes that communication and delivering information to the world should have no bias.
    • Mozilla’s primary mission is to keep the Internet open and accessible to all.

    The Mozilla Story
    • His biggest challenge as a CFO is to put systems in place.
    • The toughest thing is to know how they are going to use their leverage among the Goliaths in the industry (having an increase in users in a short period).

    Maintaining Integrity in the Workplace
    • You say what you're going to do, and you do what you're going to say.
    • You need to be honest and authentic with people.
    • Feedback is very important. However, it needs to be safely done.

    Integrity in Relationships
    • It's about respect—treat people with respect and have them treat you respectfully, as well.
    • Learn from one another.
    • Egos get in the way. People want to be viewed as smarter and even faster.

“The only way you make everyone better on the team, including yourself, is to be honest with each other about what they're great at and what kind of rubs people the wrong way.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisThe Importance of Trust and Freedom
    • His parents gave him the freedom and trusted him. If you are trusted, do not blow that trust.
    • We are tightly controlled these days. People live in fear.
    • The more you let go and the more you allow people to make mistakes and trust, the more trust that they will give back.
    • Let’s foster more social networks.

“People have amazing ideas, but you got to get it out of them. And you're not going to get it out of them if you tell them what to do every day.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    Episode Highlights[02:20] Our Backstory
    • Whatever you are reading, listening, or watching, it is helpful to know its backstory.
    • Our business was doing well before the Great Recession. Because of this situation, we lost everything.
    • We had our home foreclosed, and we were bankrupt.
    • By 2013, we were homeless. My wife and I lived in our van. Meanwhile, we forced our children to find a place to live in.

    [04:53] Why “Seek Go Create”?
    • I am a follower of Christ, and I believed I had a spiritual foundation. I asked Him what we were doing wrong and what we can do differently.
    • Walking around the golf course, I would beg and ask the Lord to give me direction and instruction.
    • Some might not believe this, but the Lord kept giving me these four words in our conversations: seek, go, create, and now.
    • We meditated on it. Followers of Christ know that these words have spiritual significance.

[08:15] “I would be saying things like, ‘Lord, just use me. I want to do what you want me to do. I’m tired of trying to do things on my own power.’” - Click Here to Tweet This[10:31] What “Seek” Means
    • In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”
    • I found myself in that dire situation because I was seeking things first, not the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

[15:16] “I believe, even from a non-spiritual standpoint, it's just good to be a seeker — someone who's looking to do new things, someone who's thinking about new things, someone who's pressing in to learn more, and do things maybe differently, and seeking, seeking, and seeking.” - Click Here to Tweet This[15:45] What “Go” Means
    • I felt that the Lord was telling us we needed to prepare ourselves to go. However, our life was in our home.
    • Mark 16:15 says this: “And He said unto them, ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.’”
    • We have been traveling since 2013, and we go where we can nourish our souls. We travel to places to do business or ministry.

    [18:28] What “Create” Means
    • I have never considered myself creative. I tend to do things over and over again.
    • Because God created us in His image, I believe He made us to be creators.
    • I recently finished my first novel, and then I created this podcast.
    • Running families and raising children take creativity.

[19:08] “All this has Biblical roots, Biblical foundations, even though I believe it's part of my business, and I think it has to do with entrepreneurship and everything else. But we were created. I believe we were created.” - Click Here to Tweet This[21:05] The Final Word[21:46] “I believe we can push when we're supposed to rest. And sometimes we could rest when we’re supposed to push or go.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • The last word that we didn't include in the title is now.
    • Initially, the title should have been Seek Go Create Now!
    • I dropped the word now because timing and rest are important too.

[22:29] “Some people are called to stay in one space for a season. And some people, they're supposed to be ready to go to all corners of the earth, to share good news, to do business, to go into the marketplace, to minister to people. We’re supposed to be prepared to go.” - Click Here to Tweet This[23:05] Branding of the Podcast
    • Seek Go Create was not the original name of this podcast. I also didn't want to include my name in the title.
    • My producer and engineer, who is also my son, suggested going with Seek Go Create.
    • I don’t want to limit the topics of this podcast. This podcast is for leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs, ministers, and anyone else seeking excellence, going for success, or creating something new.
    • Our goal is to share topics, stories, and interviews that will nourish the spirit, soul, and body.
    • We want to create an avenue for people who want to stretch and grow.
