    • A Better Way Podcast by Ryan Haley

    Episode Highlights[08:07] Defining Success
    • We should be cautious when defining success.
    • For some, success is how much money they make.
    • Tim considers his hands, mind, hard work, and speaking skills as keys to success.
    • He also gives credit to his spiritual growth and looks back on their involvement in the prosperity gospel.

    [14:07] Challenge of Bearing Success
    • Several people assume that where they are in life is in God's perfect will. We have to be wary of external factors like money.
    • One of the challenges Tim faced is there would never have been a time that he'd reach a level wherein he can relax. There's always a level above it.
    • It’s part of the deceitfulness of riches, which the Bible talks about.
    • It can be especially challenging for people who are wired for growth, fixing things, growing businesses, and reaching out for their goals.

    [18:15] Mentors
    • To check ourselves, we need the support of real friends who will call us out when we’re working too much or going too far.
    • We need relationships with real friends who are reliable and genuinely care for us to tell us the truth.
    • Mentors: People who are willing to teach you or disciple you with the truth. They should also have a background of the situation or circumstances we face.
    • Having personal time to listen to the Holy Spirit may also help us in this challenging journey.

    [21:26] Facing the Fall
    • In life, it is either humble yourself or be humbled.
    • Tim had several business ventures in real estate, marketing, and coaching. They've also been living a lavish lifestyle. Like many people, he was not prepared for what the Great Recession caused.
    • They lost their real estate business, their businesses found foreclosure, and they got evicted from their home.
    • Listen to the full episode to hear Tim’s story.

“You can either humble yourself in life, or if you don't, life has a way of doing it for you.” - Click Here to Tweet This[27:24] Dealing with the Struggles
    • You need the willingness to become humble and to change your perspective.
    • Struggles are a critical part of the journey, along with God's will.
    • These struggles are like our spiritual paddles, guiding us.

    [28:31] Prayers and Prophetic Words
    • After their constant struggle, Tim and his family led a minimalist lifestyle.
    • Looking back, the Lord never left them, and even gave them financial "provisions," as Tim called them.
    • He and his wife look back on their prayers and prophetic words spoken over them, which included money matters.
    • They had deadlines, but they found themselves afloat and well even as the deadline passed.

    [31:29] The Burden of Debt
    • It is best not to get tangled in debt. Do not try to outsmart the system, as it will find ways to get you.
    • Having debt feels like another person has ownership and control over you.
    • Debt feels like a burden lingering over your shoulder.
    • It feels so much of a burden that it changes the way you think even after you've paid.

    [36:18] A Relaxed State
    • Despite having people to pay, Tim believes they are at a place of rest.
    • They are living in an RV and traveling to where they believe God wanted them.
    • People on their journey need to ask the Lord, “What is a better way to live?”

“We're physically being and going where the Lord is leading us to because we don't even have a physical location currently, right? I live in an RV, which is part of our story and all that. So we really are at a place of peace and rest.” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:44] Investing in Real Estate
    • When investing in real estate deals, appreciation and historical income are uncertain.
    • The one constant thing is the monthly payment and dues.
    • It was the best decision at that time, but business people must be wary of what they invest in as markets change.

[38:52] Investing in Relationships and Rest
    • Aside from debt, another problem to tackle are things that hinder your relationship with God.
    • You need to take care of your relationships, including those with your business partners.
    • We often think we are supposed to do something, but we must consider if this will hinder our quiet time with the Lord.
    • Our lifeline is hearing from the Lord.
    • People must learn to invest in rest. Should their actions and activities hinder their quiet time, it is no longer a demonstration of peace.

    [49:27] Remaining at Rest
    • After reaching a state of rest or peace, Tim discovered the hardships of remaining at rest.
    • Spending time in the word allows us to draw closer to God and understand His plans for us.
    • Tragedy or setbacks teach us lessons, used by God in a pattern of good.

    [53:04] Manna to Miracles
    • The Lord sometimes drops these little provisions for us—manna. It may be the work you have or the jobs offered to you.
    • Tim accepted and received this manna by being at rest.
    • They were living in the blessing of going to Bible school, and they had to lower their standard of living.
    • We need to invest in rest and seek repentance for trying to get things in life instead of letting them come to us.

“We make a concerted effort to make a change and allow someone into our lives that can teach us, disciple us.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:00:16] Investment with New Meaning
    • Often, we say “yes” to opportunities without batting a lash.
    • People will generate so many ideas, find many opportunities, but He asks us to pause for a moment. Listen to Him in quiet stillness without any distractions.
    • Pause and consider opportunities and ideas with the Lord. He gives us subtle nudges toward or away from things.
    • You need to say “no” to some of these opportunities, so you can say “yes” to the things God has in store for you.

    [1:05:47] Faith and Self-Awareness
    • There are different ways to gain self-awareness, like taking tests or taking time with the Lord.
    • Some people often over-function and overwork. Meanwhile, other people have rest as their default behavior. Active people find their faith in rest while the latter's faith anchors itself on trusting God’s grace inside them to take action.
    • Self-awareness is discovering how God and the Holy Spirit are communicating with you and how your mentors help you find out more about yourself.
    • These divine empowerment and wise counsel will guide you to discover yourself.

“I want to emphasize the goodness of God here. He doesn't use tragedy and setback to teach us lessons, but he will use them in a pattern for good.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:09:00] Stewardship
    • Stewardship is the ultimate leadership, and once chosen, you can't run away from it.
    • It means being a steward over the everyday leader with things, places, and talents He's blessed you.
    • Unfortunately, some stewards are not aware of their strengths and weaknesses. There are a lot of tools to help them find and lead themselves.

“An entrepreneur is somebody who is very creative and takes something and creates something that wasn't there before, out of nothing.” - Click Here to Tweet This[14:48] Lessons From A Corporate Environment
    • The people with the easiest jobs were the most unhappy and miserable employees.
    • If entrepreneurs don't strike a balance between working and resting, they'll burn out.

[27:18] Investing Versus Speculating“Investing is when your principal is generally safe, and you've got a chance to make a return, but speculating is when your principal is not at all safe.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Investing is when your principal is generally safe, whereas speculating is when it’s unsafe.
    • Entrepreneurs turned investors are dangerous as they take risks and try to innovate.
    • Great investors are disciplined and sort of boring. You should not look for excitement.

“I wanted excitement out of my investing, and it cost me dearly. I made a lot of money, but I lost a lot of money as well. And I learned the difference.” - Click Here to Tweet This[30:32] The Effect of the 2008 Housing Crisis

“I'll tell you, a lot of people who build portfolios realize they're working harder than they need to, to make less than they could.” - Click Here to Tweet This[52:08] On Commercial Real Estate
    • In commercial real estate, the values are not based on comparable properties but on the income divided by the rate of return.
    • You can significantly increase the asset value. That's why the wealthiest people own commercial real estate.
    • Mobile home parks are one of the best things to invest in, as it is a recession-resistant asset class.
    • Self-storage units are also a very recession-resistant asset class.
    • Multifamily housing is now in the speculative territory and is very risky.

    [01:01:14] Investment Funds
    • Funds can be blind pools, so people don't know what they're investing in. They also have extra fees that will lessen the amount of return.
    • However, it’s possible to mitigate these disadvantages by defining terms clearly and negotiating better deals.
    • Investors can also diversify.

    [01:04:47] The Investor Criteria
    • Potential clients are professionals in their high-earning years and want the wealth-building potential of real estate.
    • People who are already in real estate but working harder than they should can go passive and earn more money.
    • High-income earners who are trying to get tax breaks are also potential clients.
    • The minimum investment size is $50,000

[08:19] The Challenges of Producing a Podcast
    • How do you get the show in front of people?
    • How do you create something visually appealing for people to just stumble upon?
    • What's something that jumps out at people and makes them say, “I could listen to that”?

    [10:29] JK's Elevator Pitch
    • He’s a visual artist, a freelance creative director, and consultant working for different projects and businesses.
    • He is also a full-time nomad.
    • As a photographer, he wasn't a fan of finding a niche because he enjoys different facets of the medium.
    • JK believes you should add the range of things you're good at to your business card.

“If it's something that you think that you can find, you know, a bit of a bit of range in and you enjoy doing it, add that on your business card, put a little hyphen between jobs and things that you're good at.” - Click Here to Tweet This[13:50] JK's Photography Journey
    • At 19, all JK wanted was an escape from their family's difficult chapter.
    • He moved from the small town of Georgia to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking.
    • He would go downtown and dabble in street photography to acquaint himself with the city.
    • It is a challenge of trying to condense a story into one frame.

    [18:09] Creative Outlet
    • There's therapy in any kind of creative outlet.
    • JK has come across a lot of people who have found redemption and solace in the creative process.
    • It heals and shows you there is something better outside the pain you feel.

[19:05] Searching for His Own Story
    • The first time he slept in his car, JK felt terrified and defeated.
    • To prove he was still a part of society, he went to Four & Twenty Cafe to get himself a nice, hot breakfast.
    • He did not want to be in that position, but, at the same time, he was searching for his own story.
    • There has to be dips and valleys to tell a story worth telling.

“As someone who loves story and storytelling, I know that there has to be kind of those dips and those valleys in order to, you know, tell a story worth telling.” - Click Here to Tweet This[24:13] The Fuel to His Desire to Travel
    • Every time Tim went on overseas trips, he would sit down with JK with an atlas, showing where Georgia was.
    • He was able to witness different places through the trinkets, pictures, and flags Tim brought home.
    • JK loved watching model trains moving along the tracks in such a graceful way.
    • He loved the engineering aspect of the trains, traveling, and everything that falls under that.

“I think that there was definitely a part of me that loved just the idea of emotion—just eloquently, fluidly moving from one place to another.” - Click Here to Tweet This[27:55] Solo Backpacking in Europe
    • He went to Berlin to capture a product launch party.
    • While planning, Tim suggested extending the Europe trip because JK has never traveled there.
    • JK found out that trains are the best way to travel across Europe, and being able to hop on and off of any train was one of the most liberating experiences for him.
    • His brother-in-law, who embarks on mission trips, referred JK to document their trips.
    • It opened opportunities for JK to travel back to Europe.

“I want people to grow in that discomfort because it’s done wonders for me.” - Click Here to Tweet This[32:58] Capturing Photos with a Group Sharing the Gospel

    • JK tried to soak in as many details and see what all there is to capture.
    • It was rewarding to sit, converse with, and hear the story of the people.
    • As a young boy, he would always say he wants to be a missionary when he grows up. That trip to Romania became his first missionary trip.

[39:50] Showcasing His Travels Through Books
    • JK has written three books documenting his experiences on the road.
    • The first book, Hopeful Wanderer, was a photo journal of his journey.
    • The second book, Off the Beaten Path, delves into his creative process as a photographer.
    • The third book, Horizons, is a collection of landscapes.

“‘Go’ is the journey, ‘seek’ is the planning aspect, and ‘create’ is its own way of putting your hand to the plow—but ‘go’ is the process.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    • You may need to do some RV repairs on your own because you are consistently traveling from one place to another.

“I was wearing shorts, but I had on a pullover sweatshirt. And we were kind of wrapped up in a bundle. We even carried a blanket with us, with our wine and cheese and all that. • She takes people who want to translate their skills into a lucrative coaching, consulting, or training business.

“The reality is that the transformation is not in the information. It's what you do with that information.” - Click Here to Tweet This[05:04] Teaching as a Skill
    • You can use something you're good at and teach other people your skills.
    • Teaching is a skill of breaking down knowledge so that it will be easier for other people to absorb.
    • Before going into teaching, ask yourself, “Do you want to teach?”
    • People with the talent and passion for teaching end up being top earners in the coaching industry because of this magnetism.
    • Coaches and teachers should hone a growth mindset by investing in education and future knowledge.

[08:11] Identifying the Talent of Teaching
    • In the teaching and coaching industry, you have to be a people person. These kinds of people bring energy and love into imparting knowledge and connecting people.
    • You also have to be a problem-solver and accept personal development.
    • Teachers and coaches must also have a knack for breaking down concepts and creating a structure of learning.
    • Some people are good at what they do but can't make it into a structure and break it down to bite-sized concepts. Simplifying concepts is crucial.

    [14:36] Greener Pastures
    • People often start musing about leaving their repetitive jobs and look for more fun or dynamic work. It's a human condition.
    • When owners get bored, some business owners make their businesses blow up intentionally or subconsciously.
    • Work around this and be aware of your thinking patterns.
    • However, if you want to pursue another business, go ahead.

“You have a chance to really build an amazing platform if you do it the right way and follow the simple principle of ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’” - Click Here to Tweet This[18:07] Building Credibility Online
    • Credibility is evident in how you show up and treat others.
    • Spamming, scraping email addresses, and cold-messaging clients are detrimental to building credibility.
    • To build credibility, connect, add value, and build relationship equity with your prospective clients. Being pushy and spammy is a lousy approach to connect with them.
    • Always lead with value without the fluff.
    • Credible businesses teach their audience, show people what they know, and rise above the noise and clutter.

    [20:46] Relationship Equity
    • It means building a rapport with your audience.
    • Achieve this by approaching your audience with credibility and authenticity.
    • Leave calls to action in your content for those who want to take the next step of connecting with you.
    • Engage them with content, ask questions, and start a conversation.

“The ideal clients that can afford your services are actually going to stop and listen to what you have to say. If you don't do that, they're going to block you. They will never buy from you. You get one chance at a first impression.” - Click Here to Tweet This[23:40] The Law of Reciprocity
    • People often give with the expectation of getting something in return.
    • Marketing with a mindset of “What will I get from this?” is detrimental as customers feel it.
    • Coaches and teachers must hone the sincerity to help others.

    [26:26] To Single Mom Entrepreneurs
    • Looking back from where she is now, Jessica is grateful she has changed others' lives while being a mom.
    • There are times when you just have to get through life alone. If you have a partner who has a stable income, be thankful for your partner.
    • As a single mom, she advises others to hope and pray, keep pressing forward, and save money.
    • Get the support you need. Hire a house cleaner and a babysitter once a week for a start.
    • Take care of yourself. Get a massage and some downtime.

    [31:26] Jessica's Past Mistakes
    • It's self-sabotage when you're not raising prices because you do not see and own your value. Ask for more value and more time for yourself.
    • Keep things simple. Focus on what you need in working toward company growth.
    • Listen to the full episode to hear about Jessica’s big “uh-oh” moment while scaling her business.
    • She was collaborating with people she hadn’t vetted.
    • The reasons behind bad decisions like these are wanting to get there faster or being gullible.

[36:39] Choosing People to Collaborate With
    • In choosing a good collaboration, look at real, measurable client results. Don't just listen to hearsay.
    • They should be relevant to what you do and have the fit right with your industry. You should be able to resonate with your collaborators' clients, too.
    • Potential collaborators know how to teach and not teach fluff. You should be able to get “aha” moments and takeaways.
    • Lastly, your values must align with theirs. You can determine this when they give you their sales pitch.

    [39:55] Avoiding Burnout
    • Our culture feeds on our burning out. There should be a balance in life.
    • Take on new businesses that do not break the bank or jeopardize your health or relationships.
    • A good business is one you can manage while maintaining a healthy balance in your life.
    • Hustle culture is not sustainable. You’ll want to build lasting and scalable businesses.
    • By streamlining, raising prices accordingly, and systemizing things into a few processes, you can create a sustainable business.

    [47:23] How to Value Yourself
    • We usually downplay our strengths, and people are shocked when they discover their most significant wins.
    • Look at how you’ve transformed the lives of your friends and clients. You need to acknowledge there is a high value in that. Your prices must be in congruence with this value.
    • The next step is actually breaking the fear of doing it.
    • After you've gotten past the fear, you are ready to create the package and program you'd like to share.

“If you can't learn from their free content, you certainly are not going to learn from their paid content.” - Click Here to Tweet This[50:00] An Entrepreneur's Fears
    • People usually harbor a lot of self-doubt and fear. They think they are not worthy, or they cannot measure up to expectations.
    • People who have gotten through the Great Depression have a different mindset. However, times are different now, and we have various opportunities before us.

    [51:42] The Middle Ground Market
    • The middle-ground market asks for discounted prices.
    • Jessica typically avoids servicing this market she acknowledges she is not here to work with everybody.

[55:00] The Challenges in Scaling Your Business
    • The hardest thing to do is breach the $100,000 to $150,000 mark. To get past this milestone, choose habitual transformation.
    • Be wary of wasting other people's time and yours. Some people lack discipline in spending their time.
    • Overcome analysis paralysis. There is a place and time for thinking.
    • Take action with speed and precision, and make it all the way. Don't do it halfway.

“When you approach everything with, ‘What can I get from you?” people can sense that. Giving without expectation, all of that is going to come back to you tenfold.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    About Ryan

Ryan Haley is an inspirational content creator, author, podcast host, real estate investor, minister, and a former Navy pilot. He is the founder of A Better Way podcast. Ryan’s passion is to help people discover their passions, gifts, and purpose.

To know more about Ryan and his work, you can visit his website. You may also reach him through LinkedIn or email.

Episode Highlights[04:58] Getting to Know Ryan
    • Ryan grew up in a Christian family.
    • Ever since he was young, he was already wired for performance and excellence.
    • Ryan served the military as a naval officer and a Navy helicopter pilot.
    • His genetics and environment led him to become performance-oriented throughout school, work, and even his business.

    [11:15] Ryan’s Spiritual Life
    • Ryan accepted Jesus into his life when he was eight years old.
    • He struggled growing up in a very liberal city, where most of his friends were not Christians.
    • When he was in college, he started to drift off from his spiritual life.
    • He realized that the problem with being performance-oriented is that you burn out fast.

    [13:59] The Wake-Up Call
    • During flight school, Ryan studied and worked hard. He had earned everything up until that point in his life, but he felt empty.
    • He was in a cycle of just doing the minimum, and he completely strayed from God.
    • A month before his first deployment, Ryan crashed a helicopter.
    • His bad decisions allowed him to experience the protection of God.
    • Upon realizing that he was spiritually dead, Ryan rededicated his life to the Lord.

    [25:11] On Successes and Failures
    • Success means being faithful to do what God tells him to do.
    • It means committing to the process and leaving the outcome to God.
    • The lower we go, the higher we actually go. Success means stepping back to step up.
    • He uses our failures or setbacks to prepare us for a better outcome.

“I am defining success now by simply being faithful to do what God told me to do.” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:27] God, The “Ultimate Judo Master”
    • God is not the cause of our failures. He did not put those things on us.
    • Instead, He is the ultimate master of orchestrating these things and turning them into something useful.
    • God is actively involved in our personal affairs, but we have total autonomy over our decisions.
    • He uses everything for good.

“I'm going to commit to the process, but the outcome is in His hands, and that's what I'm leaving to Him.” - Click Here to Tweet This[34:40] A Better Way to Success*
    • When you are a high performer, you want to get things done.
    • We are made in the image of God. Human beings can accomplish many things, even apart from Him.
    • However, there is a better way where we have the option to cooperate with God.
    • Ryan’s experiences made him realize he made a mess of his own life. He decided to give more control to God.

“It feels like you’re in your sweet spot. You’re in your flow because it’s in the way that God designed you, and you know that He’s part of it.” - Click Here to Tweet This[36:09] Less Stress, More Rest
    • Resting requires more intentionality and straining than hard work. Our natural inclination is to over function and control everything.
    • After a snowboarding accident, Ryan was compelled to take a rest. God told him that the most productive thing he could do is to spend time with Him.
    • Ryan sat still, prayed, and read the Word of God. God took care of the outcome.
    • Perfection is an ongoing process of conformance to the image of God.

“There's a better way where we have the option to co-labor or cooperate with Someone who has infinite power, infinite knowledge and is ever-present, and also, most importantly, infinitely loving and gracious. Episode Highlights[02:54] A Founder’s Guide to Following God
    • Jonathan helps founders of companies who've got a vision that seems bigger than what they think they could accomplish.
    • He helps them (1) seek God, (2) get funding to fulfill their calling, and (3) go big and expand their market.

    [04:42] Moving to New Zealand
    • Their family is currently living in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand.
    • Jonathan came on an exploratory trip to New Zealand. He eventually started a land banking project partnership with a friend who moved there.
    • It became difficult for them to transition to New Zealand because of the change in government. It became complicated to get foreign investments in.
    • Find out in the episode how Jonathan got local capital crucial to their transition to New Zealand!

    • The beginning was pretty hard because it was a lot of settling down in a new country.
    • Their kids like the school better there than they did in the States.
    • They moved to a property situated 28 acres up in the mountains and overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
    • New Zealand has a slower culture and different values when it comes to relationships and family structures.
    • The move has become an opportunity to reset some habits. It has forced him to think at a much deeper and more constructive level.

    [18:19] Jonathan’s Business Venture
    • After his junior year, he and a couple of friends bought their first investment property and flipped it. They made $40,000 on that deal.
    • Their success was a combination of hard work and the ripe real estate market at that time.
    • They were very successful until the 2008 economic fall hit them.

“No matter what you've been through, no matter where you're at now, no matter where you're going, if you haven't experienced failure yet, or hardship, or whatever—however you want to define that yet—you will in this world. That's part of this world.” - Click Here to Tweet This[22:06] Defining Entrepreneur
    • Jonathan says the entrepreneur is the crazy person out there—crazy enough to go from zero to a true front end.
    • There’s a lot of different skill sets required to scale a business operationally.
    • It can be a very lonely place because the vision in your head may or may not be successful.

    [24:48] Experiencing Failure
    • When the market stopped working, they ended up moving to Austin, Texas, in August 2009, a year after everything went under.
    • He never asked God about bankruptcy, and he never filed for one until 2012.
    • If we’re not willing to talk about failure, we can’t have real conversations. It’s important to press into that even when it’s uncomfortable.

“My biggest fear, in reality, was the fear of failure and letting people down. But I needed to go through that and deal with that once it happened so that I could be healed and I can move on to what was supposed to be next.” - Click Here to Tweet This[30:48] The Impact on His Family
    • They didn’t have kids when they started the process. He and his wife were just fighting to survive together, making deals after deals.
    • When they decided to file for bankruptcy, they just felt like they were supposed to do it.
    • They eventually had to hire a babysitter to go to the bankruptcy court.
    • In a way, filing for bankruptcy became empowering because they were ending that part of the journey.

[34:10] Dealing with Guilt & Challenge of Faith
    • Guilt was the driving motivation he was trying to avoid the entire four years of refusing to file for bankruptcy.
    • He needed to go through that fear of failure to heal and move on.
    • Until he was in his 30s, he never really went into introspection.
    • When he finally talked to God about filing for bankruptcy, he realized how awful he had been in that area.

[37:25] Moving Forward into Gold Mining
    • Before filing for bankruptcy, he was already starting a mining company, Noble Mining, with a partner.
    • They acquired three mining properties after growing their capital—three in Alaska and two in Northern California.

    [39:37] Gold Rush Reality TV
    • They put a storyline for the Gold Rush reality show on Discovery.
    • They funded the guys on the show to get to their first million-dollar season.
    • Once TV shows get publicity and viewership, it becomes a very lucrative business opportunity.
    • It helped them promote their brand and got them a lot of opportunity.

    [43:21] Beliefs About Money
    • He's involved in a group that has made a profound impact on his journey around money.
    • This group is called Generous Giving; the international version is called Generosity Path.
    • They share experiences and stories around money and see how God uses that around generosity.
    • The baseline is the idea of stewardship: it’s not your money; the job is to manage whatever resources you’ve been given.

    [48:27] Serving the World
    • For better or for worse, Jonathan seeks God and follows the leading of the Spirit.
    • Tune in to the podcast to know more about their mission trip to create jobs for people in Uganda!

“I try whatever I can to just say yes to God, and then what happens is that the door opens or it closes, and we just see what the next step is.” - Click Here to Tweet This[52:11] Their Current Projects

    [56:19] Daily Routines & Habits
    • He goes through a daily checklist with seven items. Find out what these are in the full episode!
    • The checklist is critical because he can decide in advance what is most important.
    • It takes him 30 minutes to an hour, depending on what is in it for the day.

    [01:04:16] What’s Next
    • The biggest thing for Jonathan now is his vision for the Dangerous Catalyst, which he believes God has given him.
