    • North American culture is all about speed and adrenaline. Hence, America has an individualistic society that causes burnout.
    • Meanwhile, Europeans are more relaxed than Americans because they earn a living wage enough to pay their necessities.
    • Europe has better universal healthcare, affordable higher education, and excellent retirement benefits.
    • Overall, you pay more taxes in Europe, but you also reap more benefits in the long run.

[32:34] “At the end of your life, what are you going to have left? It’s probably going to be the relationships that you have nurtured and the memories you’ve created and the legacy that you left through the actions you’ve taken.” - Click Here to Tweet This[34:47] Steering Away from the American Culture Hamster Wheel

    • Part of Alain’s interest in human psychology and behavior, people, and leadership stemmed from his home life experience.
    • Someone who has been through trauma has to go through a process of reexamination.
    • His mother and grandmother were his first role models of leadership. They helped him create his primary organizational culture.

[45:34] Pivoting from the Stronghold Paradigm That Parents Create
    • If there exists a spark of love from your parents, that is a strong building block.
    • Leaders should learn to love their people for them to follow.

    • Love has always been there for Alain, and that helped shape who he is today.

[49:14] Translating His Experiences into Books
    • Growing up, Alain felt lost because everyone has this instruction manual, but he doesn't. It became his main drive in writing books.
    • He wants to provide other people with a practical roadmap of that instruction manual.
    • Leaders need to be credible.
    • His books offer tips and tools to bring to life the things people intuitively understand but never really packaged.

    [52:53] Becoming Self-Aware

    • Take an honest look at yourself and see what’s there.
    • Feedback from other people is also part of self-awareness. It is an accelerator for development.
    • Leadership is a managing perceptions business. Alain’s journey of self-awareness is to align how he sees himself with how other people see him.
    • It's about finding the people, support, clue, tools, and prompts that will assist you in this journey.

    [57:57] Leadership as a One-on-One Relationship
    • Alain’s mentors are James Kouzes and Barry Posner.
    • There is a human desire to be seen, valued, and understood. Hence, leadership is a relationship built on connection.
    • An immediate one-on-one relationship lays the foundation of what a leadership relationship is like.
    • The two shadows around leadership are the projection shadow and formal leadership role.

    • He is going to continue trying to make the world better as he can.

    [01:10:30] Seek, Go, Create

    Episode Highlights[01:50] Chris’s Elevator Pitch
    • He is an online entrepreneur.
    • He derives income from various online sources, including blogging, YouTube, podcasting, and online courses.

    [03:06] Benji’s Dad
    • Benji is Chris’s son. He’s the namesake of his entire business brand.
    • He has always been a serial entrepreneur. However, the businesses he started did not make enough money or were not worth the effort.
    • He stumbled upon online business while finding ways to replace his then-pregnant wife’s income so she could quit her job.
    • He started with blogging. When he made enough money from that to replace their income, he decided to quit his job.
    • When he was just starting, he used to do things independently. However, he decided to outsource a CPA to handle tax ramifications when his income started to come from different sources.

[07:15] Figuring Out a Way to Get Stuff Done
    • Chris used to run an entire IT department for a local company. The project management experience he gained from that job became helpful when he started his business.
    • One of the hardest things about being a “solopreneur” is coming up with your deadlines. You need to make sure you get things done.
    • When you do not set a date and time to finish your tasks, things are just aimless.

[10:10] From a Regular Job to Running an Online Business
    • Outside of running an online business, he was also a father, husband, and an employee with a 40-hour workweek.
    • It is vital to find your creative time. What he does is listen to podcasts, research, or watch YouTube videos.
    • Instead of binge-watching television shows, he now devotes time to doing something else productive.

    [14:41] Navigating the Career Transition
    • The career transition didn’t come naturally for him because there is a science and lingo that he had to learn.
    • Marketing is a whole other language.
    • He is naturally inquisitive. He spends time doing things that can help him learn.
    • He draws inspiration from people’s stories and perspectives to hone his craft.
    • He sought information by watching YouTube videos. At first, Chris failed because he was doing outdated practices that were no longer allowed or effective. That’s when he decided to purchase a step-by-step training.

[16:43] “I looked at so many different people’s perspectives—people who failed, people who succeeded. I looked at multiple people who had succeeded and saw what they did, and molded what I did and what I liked. And after a while, things started to finally click.” - Click Here to Tweet This[19:32] Investing in Himself
    • The training taught Chris about website building, affiliations, product promotions, and commissions, among other things.
    • Chris learned how to do things correctly through his mistakes.
    • He spent around $600 in total on the training. It was a mental paradigm shift to spend on it because you must understand the importance of investing in yourself.
    • You can end up wasting your time seeking the wrong information because you don’t want to invest.

[20:29] “I didn’t necessarily learn everything. It’s just that I failed so many times that I happen to know the wrong way to do everything. So, by nature, I know the right way to do a lot of stuff.” - Click Here to Tweet This[26:20] The Return on Investment from Training
    • When his business took off, one of the first things Chris did was to pay off his credit card debts.
    • Chris used to have a negative net worth. The money he invested in training was worth it.

    [29:10] Online Business Barriers
    • He used to struggle with the preconceived notion that nobody will spend money on his offers because he’s a black guy. He used an alias to hide this fact.
    • When he stopped worrying about his skin color, things started to pick up.

[33:08] The Importance of Consistency[30:16] “Look, once you start helping people get what they want, they don't care if you're purple, or green, or orange.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Chris used to not understand when people say, “You only fail if you give up.”
    • Showing up and being consistent will help you become successful in the field you decide to pursue.
    • In this line of business, it is essential to stay top of mind.

[33:34] “If you show up more times than anybody else, then you’re gonna eventually become a consistent figure in whatever niche that you decide to jump in. You just have to show up; you just have to be there.” - Click Here to Tweet This[34:58] Blogging to YouTube Journey
    • Dwell time or time-on-page is an essential factor in SEO to rank in Google consistently. One of the best ways to do this by having people watch videos.
    • Chris decided to create videos and put them on YouTube. Then, he embedded these on his blog post to get a backlink onto YouTube.
    • His YouTube traffic picked up faster than his blog, so he flipped his process. Chris started creating YouTube videos with the accompanying blog posts.

[39:47] Possible Revenue Streams from Online Business
    • Affiliate marketing is partnering with other companies to promote their product.
    • Sponsorships may take a while because you need to prove to your sponsor that you have enough audience.
    • Advertisement income takes time to build up. This will depend on how fast you can get an audience together, but it can become consistent.
    • Monetize with course creation.
    • You can do public speaking and appearances through speaker invitations on business summits.

[44:50] “Catch Me If You Can” Principle
    • If you are successful at something, people will pay you to teach them to be successful.
    • You always have an opportunity to guide complete beginners in your field.

[47:24] Tips on Starting a YouTube Channel
    • Create content that keeps people on YouTube.
    • Start putting ads as soon as you meet the thresholds of 4,000 hours and 1,000 subscribers.
    • Work on your SEO. Use titles that people will look for.
    • Put a fantastic thumbnail on your videos.
    • Deliver the content you promised.

    [51:50] Monetizing Your Passion
    • You should be able to monetize 99.9% of your passions. Hence, you need to be creative.
    • You need to have a real audience who are interested in your content.
    • Choose a social network or medium to begin creating content on. Find a medium that works for you.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn more about Chris’s journey in monetizing his passion!

[01:00:52] What’s Next for Chris Myles
    • Chris Myles is launching a paid online course called Blog Builder Pro.

[01:03:40] “Sometimes it's better to just keep something out there and refine it over time versus trying to get it perfect. Because sometimes people will get stuck in the ready, in the aim, and then they never shoot. So, ready, shoot, aim. Seek, go, create. Go, go, and go.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    About Gabrielle

Gabrielle Bosché, also known as “America's Millennial Expert,” is a best-selling author, international keynote speaker, and a TEDx presenter. She is the president of Millennial Solution and the co-founder of The Purpose Company.

You can reach Gabrielle through her personal website and her and her husband’s website.

    Episode Highlights[02:40] Finding Clarity
    • Many of us seek clarity but do not know how to find it.
    • Constant access to information doesn’t equate to constant access to wisdom.
    • Clarity gives you confidence that you’re going in the right direction.

[05:37] Struggling with Purpose & Clarity
    • Gabrielle believes that about 95% of the population does not know their purpose.
    • Around 5% have clarity about their purpose and how to use it, while 2% are currently walking in their purpose. This is rooted in our wrong definition of purpose.
    • There’s a difference between knowing your purpose and using it.
    • For the past seven years, Gabrielle and her husband have been creating a system for people to find clarity and purpose.

[08:19] Responding to the Current World Situation
    • Gabrielle and her husband knew that going into lockdown was going to be either a gift or a crisis. They realized that how they react to it would be entirely up to them.
    • The pandemic has reset people's priorities and showed them what is important to them.

    [11:47] The Millennial Solution
    • She started the company to help organizations understand the next generation.
    • Every brand and team they work with wants to know what’s wrong with millennials.
    • As they worked with these organizations, they realized it wasn’t a millennial issue; it was a ‘significance’ issue.
    • The overarching theme all goes back to purpose.

[14:25] Significance as a Key Value for Millennials
    • Millennials have been told at a young age that they can be anything they want to be.
    • They were encouraged by optimistic parents to find fulfilling careers, which influenced how they entered the workforce.
    • Meanwhile, the older generation’s perspective is that you don't deserve to feel fulfilled until you're middle-aged or until you've ‘earned’ it.
    • For older generations, there’s a distinct difference between fulfillment in work and fulfillment in personal life.

[18:27] How Formative Events Shaped the Millennial Mindset
    • The formative event for millennials used to be 9/11. Then, it became the rise of technology.
    • The economic recession of the late 2000s to early 2010s completely reset millennials’ expectations of roles in the marketplace.
    • Older generations often criticize millennials for having a ‘quarter-life crisis.’
    • Millennials aren’t as dependent upon their employer to ensure they can maintain their lifestyle.

“We have constant access to information, but that doesn't mean we have constant access to wisdom.” - Click Here to Tweet This[22:45] Money-Related Paradigms
    • Millennials have helped lead the charge in the thought processes related to money.
    • Ten years ago, companies were selling things in a transactional type of way. Now, companies have a more transformational role for their employees and consumer market.
    • Generations either replicate or rebel against those who raised them.
    • Millennials are rebelling against the materialism of their parents; they care more about access than ownership.

[28:39] Myths About the Millennial Generation
    • “Millennials are lazy.” — Gabrielle says people who seem lazy do not lack motivation. They do, however, lack direction. The key to transforming this is knowing their purpose.
    • “Millennials feel entitled.” — Millennials’ “entitlement” is misdirected ambition. They have incredible self-confidence and want to be taken seriously.
    • Respect, for older generations, entails distance. For millennials, it entails closeness.
    • “Millennials are spoiled.” — Millennials are seen as spoiled because they were raised by parents so lovingly. However, now that they have their own responsibilities, it is a challenge to step up and “adult.”

“You see that generations either replicate or rebel against those that raised them.” - Click Here to Tweet This[33:43] Generational Curiosity
    • It’s about being curious and asking questions. Someone is no longer empathetic toward someone when they jump straight to being critical.
    • Older generations didn’t have the platform that millennials have to discuss things considered as taboo.
    • Generations mirror what’s been modeled for them.
    • Leadership is about taking the time to get to know the people you’re influencing and taking that responsibility seriously.

“We're a different generation raised with different priorities and a different economy and a different world. And just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad.” - Click Here to Tweet This[39:00] What Millennials & Older Generations Can Learn from Each Other
    • Millennials can learn grit from older generations.
    • Gabrielle calls millennials’ low commitment threshold the “Tinderbox.”
    • The older generation can emulate the open-mindedness of millennials.
    • Mental agility means being able to jump into a space where you ask questions and challenge your belief structures.

    [41:57] The Purpose Factor
    • The book has endorsements from The Rock, Tony Dungy, Tim Tebow, and Brian Tracy.
    • We’ve moved to the idea of purpose economy, where it’s all about finding purpose and using it.
    • The book aims to help you discover your exact purpose and apply it to every aspect of your life.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn how the book came to be!

[50:48] The Ideal Client for The Purpose Company
    • The company helps achievers who feel stuck and are looking for clarity about their purpose.
    • Their system helps not only the employers but also the employees find their purpose and apply it to their jobs.
    • They have helped companies have a complete culture shift.

    [53:00] Hoping for More
    • One, you have to be uncomfortable with your current situation. Two, you have to be hungry and know that you want more.
    • Hope is like an opioid; we are so addicted to it.
    • We hope for things without realizing we are responsible and capable of doing things ourselves.
    • Purpose is what you have inside of you to help other people.
    • Fulfillment is a result of using what you have to help others.

    [58:34] Purpose vs. Passion
    • Passion is a barely controllable emotion. You cannot create an entire life only around the things you enjoy because enjoyment is fleeting.
    • Pull passion is something you want to solve and you're willing to sacrifice for.
    • The oxygen mask principle states you have to help yourself first before you help someone else.
    • We live in a society where people wear tiredness as a badge of honor. However, helping people should energize you.

“Many people assume that finding your purpose means that you have to change everything completely. You have to move across the country; you have to change your hair, change your relationships, change your job. But that's not true—purpose is vocation-agnostic.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:03:22] Finding Your Purpose
    • Purpose is vocation-agnostic
    • You will never feel fulfilled if you’re living in the shadow of comparison
    • Your origin story is what you've overcome in your formative years.

“Living someone else's purpose is like wearing someone else's shoes. It might look cute for a while, but eventually it's gonna start to smell.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    About Nicholas

Nicholas Hinrichsen was born and raised in Germany. He used to play for Germany’s national golf team.

In 2000, he decided to move to the United States to study business at the Stanford Business School. After graduating in 2013, he joined the startup accelerator Y Combinator. He raised venture capital for his startup Carlypso in 2015 and eventually sold it to Carvana in 2017.

Nicholas is passionate about technology ventures and excellent customer experiences. He continues to grow his passion by investing in other companies and supporting his friends. He is also currently starting a new company that helps people with refinancing auto loans through a digital platform.

You can connect and get to know more about him through his LinkedIn.

Episode Highlights [04:10] On Finding Passion
    • Nicholas found his passion for golf in his earlier years.
    • When he traveled and worked in India and China, he got passionate about talking to people in the street.
    • While at Stanford Business School, Nicholas struggled to find that one thing he is passionate about to start a company. Nonetheless, he continued to meet new, interesting people.
    • During his time in business school, he ran into his friend Chris Coleman, who is passionate about cars. They then built and became co-founders of Carlypso.
    • If you can’t find something you’re passionate about to start a company, find a partner who can be the specialist to your generalist personality. For Nicholas, it’s Chris Coleman.

    [12:12] Specialist vs. Generalist
    • For specialists, their passion, which began in their early years, gives them a clear direction about their professional careers.
    • However, you can consider yourself a generalist if you didn’t grow up to be passionate about one thing. You also continue to search for what you want.
    • If you think you’re a generalist and want to start a company, don’t be hard on yourself. You can always work on your skills and grow a passion.

    [15:14] Lessons from Business School
    • It is easy to get frustrated when you compare yourself to all the other brilliant people in school.
    • As an entrepreneur, it is crucial to see the bigger picture and not just focus on your spreadsheets’ littlest details.

    [20:20] Defining Entrepreneurship & Entrepreneurs
    • For Nicholas, there is no one description of an entrepreneur. Every entrepreneur today has their unique set of characteristics.
    • Entrepreneurs never take no for an answer. They continue to challenge the status quo.
    • They are willing to hack things together.

    [23:18] Making Disruptions in Entrepreneurship
    • Nicholas shares the two types of disruption. The first is where you create a good experience for customers and expand from there. The other focuses more on a product that has never been built and sold.
    • For Nicholas, he wouldn’t consider his company a disruption in the industry. However, Carvana would be a better definition of disruption because of the excellent customer experience it provides.
    • Even with COVID-19, Carvana continues to disrupt and be relevant because it is easier and safer to buy a car online.

[32:43] Insights on Creating Customer Experience
    • Think about cutting the steps to make things more efficient, direct, and cheaper.
    • There is an emotional component in product selling.
    • Find marketing channels that can resonate well with your customers.

    [36:36] On Pivoting
    • Nicholas and Chris considered doing fundraising to grow the company.
    • They would have focused on helping customers with bad credit get out of their situation.
    • With the turnout of events, Nicholas and Chris decided to start a new venture to continue their plans to help people with financing.
    • Pivoting is normal in your entrepreneurial journey because there will be a lot of changes you wouldn’t expect along the way.

[41:31] Do You Need a Business Plan?
    • The business plan does not matter. What does is defining the problem you want to address.
    • Expect a lot of changes and pivots that were never part of your business plan.

[44:22] Tips on How to Get Started
    • Everything has changed since the pandemic. All things happen online, so you do not have to be in places where you usually find venture capitalists.
    • Find a platform where you can get money to develop your product.
    • Don’t invest too much of your capital. It can be risky.
    • Learn how to communicate well. Long emails don’t always work.
    • Don’t make yourself believe you understand what you’re doing. Be open to discoveries.

“I think it is important for an entrepreneur (to) look for step changes; you look for big differences, not small improvements.” - Click Here to Tweet This[49:31] Moving to the United States
    • Nicholas shares his experience moving to the United States for business school.
    • He enjoyed traveling and getting to know new cultures. It made him a more curious person.
    • Nicholas wasn’t as confident in doing small talk and pitches as the Americans in his school.
    • He saw the importance of diversity.

“The journey of an entrepreneur’s to just not take no for an answer ever because the second you do, you just agreed that the status quo is ideal, which I don’t think it is. Ever.” - Click Here to Tweet This [54:23] Nicholas’s Life After Carvana
    • He decided to leave Carvana because he saw from his friends’ experiences that there are lots of opportunities outside America.
    • He is focusing on supporting his friends by investing in their new ventures outside the United States.

“I think entrepreneurship, starting out companies, is all about giving yourself the opportunity to be surprised.”  - Click Here to Tweet This[01:00:43] The Joy in Supporting Others’ Passion
    • Growing up, he saw his dad find joy in giving back and creating valuable experiences for friends.
    • It is rewarding to support your friends.
    • Nicholas also finds support by exchanging thoughts and questions with friends when it comes to respective ventures and passions.

“The most important part, I think, once you have a product is understanding the emotions of the customers.”  - Click Here to Tweet This[01:04:30] What Nicholas Is Working On Right Now
    • After his experiences in car dealerships, he realized people might need help with refinancing auto loans.
    • He wants to focus on people with chronically or behaviorally bad credit.
    • His new venture aims to promote financial literacy.
    • It is all about monitoring people’s finances and helping them make more practical decisions.

    About Perry

Perry Marshall is a business strategist and engineer. He founded the $10-million Evolution 2.0 Prize, the world’s largest science research award. He also wrote The Ultimate Guide to Google Ads, which laid the foundation for the $100-billion pay-per-click industry. It is also the world’s best-selling book about Google advertising.

To know more about Perry and his work, you can visit his website. You may also reach him through Facebook or Twitter or sign up for his email series for some business insights.

    Episode Highlights[03:02] Perry’s Elevator Pitch
    • Perry reinvented the 80/20 principle.
    • He believes that if he can ground someone in the 80/20 principle, they can walk into any business and start fixing stuff.
    • He first applied 80/20 to Google advertising, back when nobody thought Google would be a big thing.

[08:51] The Memo from God’s Office
    • In March 2003, Perry had been obsessing about two things. The first was the calculus behind Richard Koch’s 80/20 Principle. The other was how he could use his teleseminar business to help his wife’s humanitarian missions in Mozambique.
    • While preoccupied with these thoughts, he had a chance encounter with a woman named Vivian at a music show at their church.
    • In that encounter, Vivian said the Lord told her to encourage Perry to keep on working on his formula.
    • Vivian also told Perry that God will bless his business so that he can support God’s missions. He took it as a sign to work on his 80/20 formula.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn how Perry’s 80/20 formula brought him immense success!

“I found that if I can teach somebody enough grounding in 80/20, they can walk into any business anywhere and start fixing stuff.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:15] The Source of Creative Ideas
    • The Greeks believe inspiration comes from the outside. Perry agrees.
    • Perry believes the world is a lot more sophisticated than just a bunch of billiard balls banging around in the universe.
    • However, you can still scientifically verify the things you cannot explain.
    • Experience trumps theory.

“There’s a scripture that says, ‘If any man lacks wisdom, ask.’ And what I believe is that if you’re humble and you ask for help, you get help. If you ask for wisdom, you get wisdom.” - Click Here to Tweet This [23:42] How to be Proactive in Life
    • Life offers us different channels of communication, and we can only focus on so many things.
    • However, we need to ask ourselves: “What am I not paying attention to that I need to pay attention to?” and “Where is there more where this came from?”
    • People are afraid of going down the rabbit hole, for they might get too extreme or obsessive.
    • Entrepreneurs are always obsessed with something. They just need to pick the right thing to obsess about and do it healthily.

     [30:23] On Prophetic People
    • Just because someone is prophetic doesn’t mean that person is God.
    • People have different gifts. We are all excellent at some things and lacking in others.

“A person with an experience is never at the mercy of a person who has a theory or lacks a theory.” - Click Here to Tweet This [34:20] The Importance of a Faith Community
    • Any faith community is interdisciplinary.
    • In any church, you will find people engaged in different crafts and with different strengths.
    • It is a place where you can be together and do something together despite having different backgrounds and coming from different places.
    • A faith community is an equalizer.“

     [39:00] The 95/5 Decade
    • In 80/20 language, the 2020s is a 95/5 decade.
    • It means 5% of the companies get 95% of the business, and 95% of the other companies get 5% of the business. Extreme inequality exists because of a lack of friction in the Internet world.
    • When there is no friction, things can move at lightspeed. One company can dominate the market and control the lives of millions or billions of people.
    • The 95/5 phenomenon is the butterfly effect in steroids. Because the world now is so interconnected, one disaster can multiply incredibly.

[48:24] How to Address Our Current Situation
    • Mother Nature does not like 95/5. This system is fragile and breaks catastrophically.
    • Frictionless e-commerce causes 95/5 in business. The solution to frictionless e-commerce is a frictionless community.
    • The Internet creates a “network effect” which puts wealth in the hands of a few and deprives everybody else of mobility.
    • The 80/20 principle dictates that we cannot fix inequality externally. You can only get generosity when somebody wants to be generous.

[57:31] Models of a Frictionless Community
    • A frictionless community naturally springs from very small groups of people who come together for worship and faith.
    • Social media has created the loneliest civilization ever.
    • The pandemic has magnified a lot of existing issues in a short period. One concern is how debilitating economic and financial challenges can be on the mind and soul.
    • Things may be bleak right now, but Perry believes God is up to something and there’s a lot of good underneath all that’s happening.
    • Now more than ever, we should be listening to the Head Office and asking for God’s wisdom.

     [01:05:06] The 5 Power Disqualifiers
    • First, anybody who buys anything has the money.
    • Second, they have a bleeding neck.
    • Third, they buy into your unique selling proposition.
    • Fourth, they have the ability to say yes, and not only the ability to say no.
    • Fifth, they buy if it fits their overall plans.

     [01:06:52] Perry’s Advice to Entrepreneurs
    • Now is not the time to be selling great ideas. This is the time to be selling bandages to bleeding necks. Find a problem and solve it.
    • This is also the time when agile people can get wealthy.

“If you have an obsessive personality, which almost all entrepreneurs do, you're going to be obsessing about something all the time. I don't care. You know, it's just a matter of ‘what.’ So you need to pick the right ‘what’ and then obsess about that.”  - Click Here to Tweet This [01:09:42] How to Be Agile in a Difficult Time
    • Inspiration never comes when your fists are clenched.
    • Carve out time in the morning with no distractions. Pray, meditate, and clear your head.
    • Engage in recreational activities (exercise, ride a bike, etc.) to channel and divert your worries. However, remember not to do self-destructive things.

“This is not a time to be selling great ideas or, like, really cool concepts or something like that. This is a time to be selling bandages for bleeding necks.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

“I had to lose my freedom to have complete freedom.” - Click Here to Tweet This[05:41] Getting to a Place of Peace
    • Rashmi had her family’s love and support.
    • You won’t find peace until you realize that things happen for you, not to you.
    • Being negative and bitter was not an option for her as a mother.
    • She also had faith in herself and her ability to bounce back.

“Until you realize that it's not happening to you, it's happening for you, you won't find peace until that point.” - Click Here to Tweet This[10:08] Rashmi's Background
    • Rashmi is well-educated. She went to UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated with the highest honors. Later, she went to law school in Columbia.
    • She had previously worked with Wall Street and eventually started going in between jobs. She then established her own real estate company.
    • When she met a group of real estate developers, she considered getting them as clients right away because that would mean more financial stability for her family.
    • She believed that people who are of faith are good. Hence, she trusted these real estate developers immediately without doing her due diligence.
    • In March 2009, she decided to stop doing transactional work and merged her practice with her father’s.

[20:07] Taking Ownership of Her Actions
    • In May 2011, the FBI went to her house. She was in denial and believed that she had not done anything wrong. Two years later, they gave her a grand jury subpoena.
    • Rashmi's indictment included one count of conspiracy to commit fraud and 23 counts of bank fraud.
    • She was afraid of losing everything she had worked for, so she wrote several documents and emails supporting her plea. However, her trial attorney made her realize she had an obligation to disclose her developer's activities, especially since she was a lawyer.
    • She took off her fighting hat and took ownership and accountability for what happened.

    [35:34] Dealing with Shame
    • Rashmi informed anyone who knew her at her core, from her immediate family and close friends to her mentors, colleagues, cycling community, and her children’s teachers.
    • The ordeal made her realize that being authentic, owning your mistakes, and holding yourself accountable give people reason to believe in you.
    • She felt the love and support of her family and friends from their letters.

“I believe in life, we have, in every moment, three options: you can accept what you're going through, you can enjoy what you're going through, or you can be enthusiastic (about) what you're going through. But being negative, bitter is not an option.” - Click Here to Tweet This[42:41] Lessons from Rashmi’s Experiences
    • Our circle is like a constellation that gets bigger. You need to allow yourself to be real around them.
    • Let go of those who would not stand by you.
    • You should know how to separate yourself from negativity. Don't let these thoughts eat you and your soul away.

    [45:24] On Epiphanies
    • Epiphanies occur when there is a need for an intense, focused effort to make a change or adjustment.
    • Everyone will undergo some tragic loss in their lives. But when life brings you down, you can either crumble or climb out of it.

    [50:21] Life in Prison
    • Rashmi had to serve time in three different facilities in Miami, Coleman, and Tampa. She did various activities in these places.
    • She stayed in Miami for 10 days before getting transported to Coleman, where she spent most of her time. Then, she moved to a country jail in Tampa, Florida, for 23 days.
    • She held a very steadfast routine every day. Instead of staying in prison with negative energy, she redirected her focus onto doing better things.

[56:58] How She Broke the News to Her Kids
    • Rashmi's kids were 9 and 10 years old at that time. Although she and her husband were already separated, they both talked to them and were honest about what was going to happen.
    • While she was in prison, her kids and parents visited her several times.
    • Her kids knew that they could always come and talk to her. They also learned the significance of accountability.

    [01:05:03] Rashmi’s Present Identity
    • Identity and labels have become essential to everyone.
    • Rashmi considers herself a mother, passionate leadership consultant, fitness enthusiast, adventurer, and empath. She is also a tenacious fighter and an indomitable woman.

“Somehow, there was something that I did—tangible—that this person remembers and wrote about, right? It's such a power. It's like the eulogies before you die.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:06:05] Slippery Slope & Ethical Vigilance
    • The slippery slope is the gray area of morality. Once you “play in the gray,” it would be challenging to climb back up.
    • To combat this, anchor yourself with the five steps of ethical vigilance. Listen to the full episode to know more about ethical vigilance
    • When you can stop to apply these five principles, you can refocus and achieve what you want with a little shift.
    • Rashmi is now busy giving talks and holding training on ethical decision-making and leadership.

[01:10:30] The Doors That Opened for Rashmi
    • Rashmi has inspired many people by sharing her story.
    • She also feels blessed that people believe she can help make a difference.
    • During this quarantine, she has also found time to write her book.

“Sometimes, when challenges come, you have to see it from a new way, a new perspective, and then cultivate your next measure from that standpoint.” - Click Here to Tweet This[10:49] Talking with Tanya
    • Tanya provides motivation, inspiration, and encouragement wherever you’re at.
    • She has moved from an email to a blog, newsletter, social media, and vlog. It's okay for her to start all over again as long as she can deliver her message.
    • She coaches people who are ready to tap into their purpose or go after what’s in them but don’t know how to uncover it.
    • In terms of demographics, her clients’ ages range from 18 to 55, split equally between men and women.

    [14:43] The Coach Gene
    • It's a whole new world to her, but it’s what she was already doing ever since.
    • But since the world has made a name for it, she took further education to get the title.
    • She’s more of a servant leader who wants to help make sure everybody is okay.
    • The purpose of being a coach was already a part of her DNA and her essence, and it keeps growing.

    [18:26] What Made Tanya “Tanya”
    • She was a PK or a pastor’s kid.
    • Tanya’s parents made a sacrifice and moved to another part of Fort Worth to expose them to “more.”
    • Her previous school wanted her and her brother to take remedial and special education.
    • Her parents proved the school wrong and moved them to another school district. There, she got straight A’s and was in gifted and talented programs.

    [23:38] On Being a Pastor’s Kid
    • They weren’t raised like typical PK’s. Their parents gave them the tools and let them make their own decisions.
    • The only thing they had to do was to go to church on Sunday mornings.
    • They had free will to make decisions, but her parents made sure there would be consequences.
    • Being given that freedom allowed them to talk freely to their parents.

    [29:33] Ministry & Entrepreneurship
    • It taught her how to run a business from a Kingdom perspective and principles.
    • Watching her father do it showed her how to model a Kingdom business even if it wasn’t ministry.

“Stretch, indeed. Stretch, change their perspective, figure out a new way to deliver what you do, create, or produce. But find a way that you can get it to people, given the circumstances.” - Click Here to Tweet This[31:45] The Concept of Money
    • Tanya wanted to have not only principles of the Kingdom but also the knowledge and skills.
    • Experiencing financial struggles made her want to learn how to do things better.
    • Even though they didn’t have much, her parents made sure they passed on what they did have.

    [36:06] The Mama Voice
    • Tanya’s mother was a mama of eight. Tanya lost her sister to cancer last year.
    • Churches before had to be nondenominational because the baptist won’t allow women to become preachers.

    • Flowing into prophetic has been passed down from her grandmother to her mother and her.

    [42:36] Things Mama Said
    • Tanya’s mother is a fan favorite, so she felt that it was time to do a project around it.
    • She talked to her siblings and cousins about the stories of her mother and aunt, who passed away recently.
    • It includes the life lessons they learned along the way.
    • She made sure to ask permission from her mama before publishing it. Her mother also helps her with signing the books.

[46:55] A Hard Head Makes a Soft Behind
    • There are consequences to every decision you make in life.
    • You have to accept what happens based upon what you decided to do.
    • Parents have to find a way to discipline children and show them there are consequences to their actions.
    • If you don’t show them that, somebody else is going to and they’re going to be far worse than if you prepared them.

“Sometimes, I have to start all over with my audience and with my followers, but I knew there was a purpose, and I knew that people needed what I had.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:36] Labeling & Fairness
    • Life will not always be fair. We need to know that to avoid falling apart when unfair things happen.
    • It’s similar to the Judgment of Solomon.
    • We may have to sacrifice and give up and still don’t get why we need to be hurt.

“I saw things that I wouldn't have seen in my original environment. And so because my environment changed, the exposure changed, the opportunities changed as well.” - Click Here to Tweet This[58:43] A Glimpse at Tanya’s Favorite Chapters

    • We’re always growing and progressing toward destiny, the promise of God.
    • You Are Who You’re Supposed To Be: Who you are is what people want; they don’t want anybody else.

“Sometimes what we want, it won’t happen, and we may have to sacrifice and give up, and we still don’t get it. But you have to be willing to make those sacrifices even when they hurt as well, even if it’s not fair.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    About Allen

Allen Lycka is an author, motivational speaker, and thought leader. He is also a business coach and a TEDx speaker. Allen used to be a medical doctor in the field of cosmetic surgery. He has recently co-authored a book with Harriet Tinka called The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life: Two Survivors Reveal the 13 Golden Pearls They've Discovered.

If you want to contact Dr. Allen Lycka, you can send him an email at [email protected].

Episode Highlights[03:25] Allen's Wellness During the COVID-19 Pandemic
    • Allen lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, known for having a prosperous economy from its oil production. He feels very blessed living in a peaceful place with incredible scenery.
    • Being a former doctor, Allen sees COVID-19 as a potent virus due to its unpredictability and the uncertainties it brings in our lives.
    • For him, testing everybody is the best idea; otherwise, we will be forced to live in isolation for a long time.

“As things shifted, I shifted too.” - Click Here to Tweet This[11:59] On Working with Dan Kennedy
    • Dan Kennedy is a known millionaire-maker. He invites authors to send him their materials for critiquing.
    • In the early 1990s, Canada had a medicine recession that changed its healthcare system. Back then, Allen thought of going to private enterprise.
    • Also, during that period, cosmetic surgery was becoming a trend.
    • Allen was one of the first innovators, users, and experts of Botox, fillers, and liposuction that fight aging.

    [16:07] On Being a Marketer
    • Doctors are great technicians, but they are poor storytellers.
    • Allen was blessed with a good voice, and it allowed him to amplify his message to the people.
    • There are three parts of marketing: message, market, and media. Media has changed drastically over the years, and Allen had to adapt constantly.
    • For him, marketing is like catching a fish. If you have 20 fishing rods, you will have several places to send your message and observe what is doing well.

    [21:11] Investment on Masterminds
    • For Allen, you can learn things in a hard way or invest in your education to find success. Being on a mastermind is one means of getting an education.
    • There are three ways of getting ahead: use other people's knowledge, time, and money.
    • Even though you invest in education, there are still possibilities of failure. But for Allen, he wants to get his failure quicker than anybody else.
    • It helps him find new ways of doing things, such as developing his unique selling proposition.

“I want to get my failure over much quicker than anybody else. If I'm going to fail, I want to fail now. And that's a good thing because after failure comes success.” - Click Here to Tweet This[25:09] Learning from Maxwell Maltz
    • According to Maxwell Maltz, for people to experience a change in their lives, they have to change the way they look at the world rather than changing how they look.
    • Most plastic surgeons took a similar path to Maxwell. You can't change people by changing what's on the surface; you have to delve deeper.
    • Allen also has personal experiences that shifted his view in doing more than just cosmetic surgery.

“He (Maxwell Maltz) realized that people had images of themselves and that if you didn't affect the way they looked at the world and looked at themselves, you wouldn't be able to change the way that they are.” - Click Here to Tweet This[27:13] On Cosmetic Surgery
    • Cosmetic surgery can change people's lives. It helps people to get rid of the things holding them down.
    • Cosmetic doctors are often perceived as gods due to their ability to make drastic changes in people's lives.

[29:54] On Starting His book, The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life
    • While walking around Disney World, his foot dropped on the right side of his body. After talking to a lot of experts, he was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. It was predicted he was going to die in six months.
    • While being at the top of his career, he experienced Kübler-Ross’s five stages of grief. But his wife, being a medical doctor as well, was not convinced that he has ALS.
    • He turned to Google and found Dr. David Martz. He's a hematologist who was presented with the same symptoms as Allen but was cured later after getting a different diagnosis.
    • He started David's treatment. Allen realized that life is not all about work and worrying and that God gave him a second opportunity to send a message to others.
    • After retiring, he started writing the book with Harriet Tinka, who has an unbelievably painful story to tell. Together they found principles of life they call “golden pearls.”

“Because of the things we went through that really gave us a new life, that allowed us to see life in a different light, that allowed us to see things in a way that was totally different.” - Click Here to Tweet This[43:01] The Book's Message
    • Because of the things Allen and Harriet both went through, they now see life in a different light.
    • The book's message is needed now more than ever. People should be able to come out of this society with a new life, or we will not be able to revive it.

    [44:46] The Book's Golden Pearls
    • Golden pearls are rare finds. They are formed from the irritation on the shell of an oyster.
    • They both see this as an excellent analogy for the things they've learned. Pearls are formed from strife, and they are stronger for it.
    • They use the number 13 since it's a remarkable number. They put a bonus pearl in the book, in which they talk about fear and how it's crippling us. Each pearl in the book is a standalone item.
    • Listen to the full episode to get a sneak peek of the book’s contents!

    [49:56] The Importance of Enthusiasm
    • Enthusiasm is a game-changer. You need to wake up enthusiastically every day.
    • Allen treats every day with sincere enthusiasm because, for him, he wasn't supposed to be alive, yet he's still here.
    • Listen to the full episode to hear about Fred the carpenter's story of enthusiasm!

[53:48] Readers’ Takeaway from the Book
    • It's not about what happens to you; it's what you do with what happens.
    • Look at crises as opportunities and find something good that can come out of it.

    [58:59] Allen's Next Journey
    • The book The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life is the start of several books. Each golden pearl they discussed will become a book.
    • They will put extra pearls and workbooks on the second book to further show people how to do things differently in their lives.

He will share how he defines success and failures with God and how he incorporates his love for people in his business. Tune in to this podcast to discover more!

    • TJ helps companies become excellent by finding people that will fit their culture and job requirements.
    • He acts as a representative for both the client and candidate, helping both parties build a long-term and sustainable relationship.
    • TJ grew up and currently stays in a small town in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

[05:40] Pandemic-Induced Trends in the Workplace
    • Although there hasn’t been an influx of people because of the lockdown, TJ agrees people can now see more clearly the advantages of living in rural areas.
    • One of the most observed trends is working remotely.
    • Everybody is realizing the value of relationships and alliances. This trend has become an opportunity to show how much our relationships mean, whether personal or commercial.
    • A lot of companies are shifting to a mindset of “How can we help?”

[09:03] How the Pandemic Changed TJ’s Role
    • The majority of TJ’s searches have been put on hold as companies try to figure out the current situation.
    • TJ saw this as an opportunity to invent new ways to serve and develop relationships by bringing other levels of experience. These include new services such as interview coaching for clients and candidates.
    • They are trying to find more ways to bring more value to the hiring process.
    • The pressure has made TJ and his team more creative, making them better leaders and better servants.

    [12:20] TJ’s Hobbies
    • TJ is into autocross, where car enthusiasts gather in a big parking lot or runway, build their own race tracks using cones, and then drive around these cones as fast as possible.
    • Having a son made TJ more critical of risk assessment when it comes to his hobbies.
    • When it comes to hobbies where you are putting yourself at risk, you need to consider your other responsibilities as a husband, a parent, or a business partner.
    • TJ does not see it as losing freedom; he is stepping up his level of risk management.

    [20:25] TJ’s Leather Goods Businesses
    • TJ’s involvement with BestLeather.org was his formative business experience where he developed his confidence around what he could contribute to other people.
    • It helped him develop relationships, opening doors for his other leather business, Marlondo Leather.
    • Through the other relationships he had developed, TJ was able to bring people together.
    • There is value in enjoying the struggle and going through the process.

[25:45] God’s Trials in Our Lives“The point of the trial that God gives us is for our perfection and to persevere in these trials, because through these trials, we are continuously refined.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • The trials given by God are for our perfection, and it is through these trials that we become refined.
    • We need to recognize the relevance of these trials, especially in the age of social media, where we only see the façade of success.
    • Truly successful people go through disappointments and discouragement.
    • Embrace and be grateful for these bitter experiences. They are opportunities for growth.

“The actual reality that truly successful people experience is one of deep valleys and bitter disappointment and discouragement.” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:00] Reconciling Business with Faith
    • In the big picture, TJ believes that success will be in eternity – to be recognized by God for loving God and loving others as yourself.
    • TJ recognizes that while his success is ultimately his responsibility, he does not discredit the role of the Lord’s will.
    • He would not trade business for his soul, and if TJ were forced to choose, he would seek the direction of his faith.
    • While running his business, TJ seeks to be a great leader and model servant, living his Christian ideals in the service of his clients, employees, candidates, and vendors.

“I don't want to be the man who trades his soul for the world. And my business is not as important as my soul. And if it comes to that, then I know which direction I'm choosing.” - Click Here to Tweet This[38:06] Love in Business
    • Love is to seek the best for other people, coming from a heart of care, compassion, grace, and mercy.
    • Good and loving service is aligning business interests and helping each other achieve goals.
    • In TJ’s line of business, it’s important to develop a relationship, looking out for alignments in the client and the candidates’ motivation and outlook.

“Love is to seek the best for other people. [...] It comes from a heart that is not vindictive or judgmental or selfish. It comes from a heart of care and compassion and grace and mercy.” - Click Here to Tweet This[45:41] Working With Clients as Partners
    • Telling people what they need to hear is essential in moving things forward.
    • However, it should come from a position of competency and authority, not anger or disappointment.
    • If you approach clients with “here’s an opportunity of how we can do that,” then they will see you as a partner in their journey.
    • TJ’s responsibility is to point out and address things that somebody who is focused on a different problem cannot see.

    [47:50] Integrity
    • People have a “scammy” perception of the sales industry in general, but it is more impactful in recruitment because it directly involves people’s lives.
    • Integrity is the foundation of trust, and trust is the foundation of relationships.
    • Compromising your integrity will lead to short-term gains but will limit the meaningful impact you can have.

    [55:17] Future of Recruiting
    • The low employment market will need a tremendous amount of outreach to develop relationships.
    • This is to introduce the right opportunities and manage the process of the right companies wooing the right candidates.
    • Companies would need recruiters, as high unemployment would mean an influx in resumes and applications, which they need to carefully sift through.
    • TJ and his company can help address that problem.

    [58:51] Valuable Skill Sets
    • Servant leadership, having an intrinsic belief in the value of improving the condition of other people, is a skill that will never go out of style.
    • In any date, pattern, or economy, companies would want to hire a person with that skill.
    • Communication and problem-solving skills are also important.
    • Leaders will come out of this tough situation.

    [01:03:47] Key Takeaways
    • Loyalty is a two-way street. If you want your people to be loyal to you, be loyal to them
    • Tell your people why we need to make a collective sacrifice.
    • Be productive—you can take time for yourself, but do not slack off.
    • For TJ, “seek” is the first step in the process. And often, if we are asking the right questions, the “go” and “create” part will follow.

“Sometimes I get these burdens on me where it's like I have to tell this thing. I have to address this issue. And the podcast has really helped me get that stuff off my chest. So I get to investigate things that are on my mind, things that are weighing me down, and then hopefully, help other people through that journey.” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:23] Insights About His Faith

    • Applying the Bible in today’s context is complex. There are concepts and circumstances that can overlap.
    • Some people have a bad habit of calling things biblical to back up something they like, do, or believe in.
    • He urges people to read and understand the Bible before picking out verses.

“Ultimately, the goal is to bring people back to “What is the gospel?” That's the whole agenda. Because we can get tied up in political movements and pyramid schemes and things.” - Click Here to Tweet This[43:14] Goals on Talking About Christianity

[01:03:26] Discussing How Corporate America Created Christian America in His Podcast
    • Labor unions were born after fighting communism, but injustices continued to arise.
    • “Do unto others as you'd want done to yourself” is hard to practice in America, which is full of unfair labor practices entrenched in the system.
    • Through his podcast, Chris wants to discuss the many layers of history and its connection to practicing and enhancing faith in today’s time.

“I would challenge anybody, even if you're not a believer, read the Bible for yourself. [...] You see people quoting verses, and you’re like, if they knew what was around that verse, they would never post that verse. You know, read it for yourself.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:08:58] Relating Our World Today to Biblical Stories
    • Chris took into example plagues from the Old Testament that are precedent and still part of human history in many ways, such as financial crises.
    • We tend to believe unfortunate circumstances will never happen again due to reforms. However, Chris argues that it is part of the natural cycle of human life.
    • We forget God’s mercy and how the world actually works during trying times.
    • We can find comfort in the rises and falls in human history that can awaken us from being scared of what’s happening in our world.

“It’s easier to be scared. It’s much harder to try to keep things in perspective.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:11:33] America as a Christian Nation
    • Founding Fathers believed in God, but not Jesus.
    • Laws of the Bible are not written in the laws of the United States.

    • A Christian nation calls people to a heritage rather than radical faith.
