    Episode Highlights[02:45] A Wealth Perspective
    • Retirement shouldn't be the metric you want to be headed toward.
    • Caleb believes that intentional living is the metric that determines your future wealth.
    • Money should be a tool that helps people take back control of their time.

[04:13] “I’m 24 years old in an industry where the average age of a financial advisor is 58.” - Click Here to Tweet This[04:58] Caleb’s Superpower
    • Caleb, 24, says his dyslexia helped him learn unconventionally by going to the experts and seeking out mentors.
    • Although it's hard for him to read, he developed an ability to take complicated things, make them simple, and articulate them.

    [11:58] Relationship with Money
    • Caleb thinks that people are still ignorant about money, Christians more so.
    • People tend to be guilty when they talk about money, so it feels like a sin.
    • The Bible talks about money and being good stewards.
    • Money should be a tool that enhances your identity, not the other way around.

    [15:12] Growing Up with Values
    • Caleb is the oldest of six kids, was homeschooled, and grew up in a faith-based home.
    • He remembers going to a college class in high school and getting an A, but his dad was less concerned about the grade and asked if he had learned something.
    • His mom taught him that he has a moral obligation to change things he can control, like his attitude, and not be a dyslexia victim.

    [25:50] Foundation of Wealth Mindset
    • Caleb shared the foundational books he read before he was 18 by listening through Audible.
    • After reading Think and Grow Rich, he realized he wanted to dedicate his life to becoming the most valuable person he could be.
    • He headed a bank's investment department because he wanted to be more helpful to the people he was working with, even though he could have earned twice as much elsewhere.

[28:30] “Wealth starts in how we think. A lot of people read my book, or listen to my show, or hear me speak, and they want a tactic. There's nothing wrong with tactics. I love efficiency hacks. But I'm telling you: you are missing the point if you don't understand that wealth begins with how you think.” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:44] Definition of Success
    • Caleb views success as an ability to help people see and reach their highest potential.
    • He feels successful when he becomes a helper alongside you because you are the hero of your story.
    • Every decision you make with your time, money, and abilities has ripple effects.

[43:16] 4 Principles of Better Wealth
    • #1 Clarity. Any road will get you there if you don't know where you want to go.
    • #2 Efficiency. Optimize your money, and understand your cash flow, assets, and debt.
    • #3 Consistency. You need to be consistent in the long term and develop the ability to control your capital.
    • #4 Use. Your greatest financial need is to use money in a way that you want to live your life.

[48:52] “When we play the long-term game, we have to understand that every decision we make has a consequence. Going back to the time value of money, a dollar today is worth way more than a dollar. A dollar loss today is worth way more than just a dollar.” - Click Here to Tweet This[54:10] The And Asset
    • Caleb’s book has the tips to efficiently use your money on special types of life insurance contracts.
    • The best feedback he got was about the book's simplicity, as if a fourth-grader wrote it.

[54:34] “I hated life insurance when I first started. And then when I truly understood it, I realized it's not the what; it's the how people are using it. It's how people are teaching it. And it can be an amazing foundational asset to store your capital and use it throughout your life.” - Click Here to Tweet This[56:58] On Better Wealth
    • Caleb founded his company on the belief that if people understood what he was teaching, the business would grow.
    • Better Wealth walks people through the four principles through education, financial coaching, and implementation.

    • It is okay to slow down and give time for what’s important.
    • The pandemic has been suitable for connecting with family despite the physical distance.
    • People are too accustomed to being busy. Hopefully, the pandemic has taught us to slow down and be creative.

[15:32] “If we really let ourselves have the time and space to be quiet and have that time to think, then you’re going to see how beneficial it is.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:10] Why People Are Scared to Be Quiet
    • Many of us grew up in a culture full of judgment.
    • Personally, Katie went through a lot of soul-searching before realizing she didn’t need to base everything she did on everybody else’s judgment but God’s.
    • It took her lots of quiet time and questioning to detach from pleasing others.
    • People tend to be scared to stay quiet and do what they want because of outside judgment.

[21:54] Moving Out of the USA
    • Katie thinks that life wouldn’t be as prolific and productive if she and her family had stayed in the US.
    • Surrendering her life to God’s call led her to all the experiences she’s had.

[23:49] “Each of those experiences made us who we are. And at each step along the way, the Lord was refining things.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [26:50] Katie’s Ministry Work
    • She went to do a traditional mission at a Bible college where she went around looking for financial pledges to support her mission.
    • Three years later, she moved to another part of Mexico to take over a missionary couple’s children home ministry.
    • Due to blacklisting, they had to move back to the US. However, they found another opportunity to come back to Mexico.
    • When they did, they were supposed to stay and finally take over the children’s home ministry. However, there were many disagreements regarding bringing outside leadership in the ministry.
    • With all the setbacks, Katie and her husband had to find a way to support their family. This led them to build their business.

[32:18] Opening Up to New Opportunities
    • Katie and her husband started a Mexican business called Lemonhass.
    • It is a curriculum company that is the only literature-based homeschool curriculum in Spanish.
    • They hold online training and conferences to train parents on how to homeschool in Spanish.
    • Despite it being a business, Katie still sees what she’s doing as ministry work because she focuses on building relationships.

[33:39] “All you gotta see is the next step. And He leads and He guides the way he wants to take you, and it’s just been amazing that now we’re reaching families all around the world.” - Click Here to Tweet This[41:16] Ministry Through Business
    • Through their coffee shop business, they get opportunities to share the gospel and interact with other people worldwide.
    • Expanding their ministry to a business level allowed them to share the gospel with more people, especially people in business.

    [45:49] Relationship with Money
    • Katie’s money issues came from how she was taught to think about money.
    • She has realized now that God doesn’t need money to provide for people. Money shouldn’t define who you are and stop you from serving others.
    • Service comes first before the money.

    [55:59] The Handprint Legacy Live
    • It is a three-day virtual event for faith-based owners of small businesses.
    • It is a marketing training on how to create a successful online marketing funnel.

[53:32] “The relationship has to come first. The money is a nice secondary, but it’s secondary. It’s got to be about the relationship. They don’t care what you have to offer until they know that you care.” - Click Here to Tweet This[59:14] How Flamingos Embody Faith
    • Katie talks about one of her books entitled Faith Like Flamingos.
    • When she took her family on a trip to watch flamingos in Mexico, she realized how flamingos embody faith.
    • While they were viewing the flamingos from a boat, Katie thought that the way they didn’t care and just did their thing even around alligators portrayed their strength and beauty. This made her associate flamingos to how faith should be.
    • The book consists of 25 days of short lessons about flamingos and an application of God’s word for each lesson.
    • She shares life lessons and personal stories of balancing ministry and business, which can be daunting.

[01:05:46] Tips & Thoughts on Homeschooling
    • Know why you’re homeschooling. Your whys will keep you strong when it’s hard to do it.
    • Homeschooling is a unique opportunity to celebrate your child.
    • Get to know your child and what they excel in.
    • You have a lot of liberty to create a unique curriculum that can holistically support your child.

[01:01:43] “It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, or what you’re doing, or what your business is or is not. If you’re a Christian, you’re a Christian doing all of those things.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:08:15] Starting Your Business
    • Just start doing something.
    • Katie says they started with two businesses because it was God’s calling for them to do two at once.
    • However, she suggests focusing on one business first when starting.
    • Take action for God to bless it.

    • What helped Joe is when he allows other people to remind him to slow down and rest.

    • They first met each other as acquaintances in the music space before they eventually ventured into joint businesses.
    • While they've been through several businesses already, they never closed a potential enterprise because of a fight.
    • An essential part of their partnership is to ensure that they're on board with the same vision.

    About Case

Case Lane is an entrepreneur out to help other entrepreneurs find their niche. She has a background in communications, political science, business, law, and economics.

Case Lane has done a variety of things. She's been a reporter, diplomat, digital media corporate executive, and lawyer. In addition to these things, she also writes plenty of fiction about the future and technology.

Episode Highlights[01:59] Who is Case Lane
    • Case Lane is the founder of Ready Entrepreneur.
    • Before the lockdown, she lived what she calls a global laptop lifestyle, where she traveled often but was usually working.
    • She would go to Las Vegas to write because it’s a quiet and manageable place for her.

    [09:19] How Minimalism Helps Creativity
    • Minimalism helps save money and takes away much of the unnecessary activities from your life.
    • Having fewer things around you helps you focus on what you want to do.
    • Case found that she never needed to purchase items anymore and had never needed to do so.

    [15:01] Case & Writing
    • She likes to write in different genres, such as romance.
    • She takes an interest in how the Internet and digital interactions have changed the nature of human relationships.
    • Case feels that our relationships through the Internet are part of a bigger story of how humanity uses technology in general.

[15:07] “I always tell people the overall umbrella of everything I do is: prepare for the future.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:31] The Meaning of Your Identity
    • When writing, Case keeps a pen name for practical reasons. It helps her keep compartments of her life separate and functions as a brand name.
    • Your pen name is a reflection of yourself. You have to connect with your brand, or others won't.
    • The Internet lets you be who and what you want.
    • Being an expert comes from having experience, not credentials.

[25:35] What Made Case Who She Is
    • Case joined the Canadian Foreign Service and served in the Philippines, Colombia, Chile. Then she went to UCLA to get an MBA.
    • While in law school, she started self-publishing e-books.
    • No matter where she went, she was always learning.
    • Having her own business was always her desire.

    [30:07] Writing About the Future
    • Case didn't predict the current world situation would happen, but she had once written a concept about all of humanity being online.
    • The things we needed to know before the advancement of technology were relatively simple.
    • Controlling your life may become more difficult because of technology.
    • Case thinks that online education is going to become more popular and possibly become the norm.

    [34:03] How Case Writes Fiction
    • Case usually creates her fictional world first, but she already has a sense of the characters and their roles.
    • When planning a book, Case doesn't use a rigid outline for fiction stories. She does use outlines for non-fiction, however.
    • Case mostly writes about places she's been to and uses real-world locations as inspiration.
    • She also takes inspiration from the places she hasn't visited. In fiction, you can do what you want.

    [39:48] Algorithms & Fiction
    • Algorithms on the internet are proprietary technology; you need people who can scientifically research how they work.
    • Learning how an algorithm functions will require much trial and error.
    • Algorithms collect large amounts of data on you, but most people don't have much information about algorithms.
    • The technology has great potential to do good.

[47:31] Education, Technology & the Future
    • People need to pay more attention to applying technology to issues such as education and health care.
    • Case believes the pace of education should depend on a person’s ability; today’s educational system is too narrow.
    • Technological change, such as automobiles and electricity, has always received pushback.
    • It’s good to pay attention to who is pushing for and making technological changes.
    • The online college experience is mostly meeting new people and building a network.

[47:47] Not a New Dark Age
    • Case is an optimist about the future.
    • The real dream for Case is freedom and democracy.
    • The current situation is a call for all people to rally and encourage each other.

[50:59] “Instead of curling up and stepping away, come forward, and let's see what you can do.” - Click Here to Tweet This[52:10] The Online Mindset
    • Case says to start by always thinking you’re going to do something.
    • Always be thinking about looking for opportunities.

    • No one was taught how to have a success consciousness. You have to retrain your brain.

[58:30] “I don't even want to call it failure because everything was an incremental learning step on to the next thing.” - Click Here to Tweet This[59:04] Who Can Do Online Business?
    • Entrepreneurs come from a variety of places, but the successful ones are those who keep at their work.
    • Online work can and will get tedious as you try different things.

[01:01:18] The Internet as an Equalizer
    • The top successful online entrepreneurs are, according to Case, predominantly white men.
    • Much of online entrepreneur success stories have a gap between where they started and their current success.

[01:07:14] How to Start an Online Business
    • Online businesses are about finding people who need service and serving them.
    • Many online businesses have been started by people looking for a service but couldn't find one.
    • One way to find a starting point for your online business is to look at your interests.
    • Case encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to look outside their credentials and utilize all their experiences.
    • People online are mostly doing searches on the Internet. Case sees this as people requesting services and, therefore, as an opportunity.

    [01:13:52] Making Money Online
    • The quickest way to earn money is through advertisements. Joining an advertising program costs nothing, and you make money for every click.
    • When you get bigger, you can also earn from sponsorships.
    • Eventually, entrepreneurs can start selling their content by writing books, hosting conferences, or speaking.

[01:16:24] What's Next for Case Lane?[01:16:53] “There's no slowdown when you're in the online world. There's no slowdown in your work because your infrastructure, as long as we've got the Internet, is very much up and functioning every day.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Case will continue writing and promoting her e-book to eventually turn it into both an audiobook and physical print.
    • Case is always thinking about what to write next.
    • In the mornings, Case doesn't pick up her phone to text; instead, she writes out new ideas.
    • She believes her role in life is to provide solutions for people.

[01:19:19] “Create from scratch. Create from what you see, from what you know, what others are doing, but you do them in a different way for other people. Just constantly put it out there and let it help build a better world as we move forward.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    • Top Five Method: You write down five most essential things to do, put them in order, and systematically work on them.

[28:05] What People Need to Know about Stoicism
    • Stoicism centers around three principal figures: Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca
    • The idea revolves around self-management and focusing on controlling yourself instead of trying to influence the outside world.
    • Experts say that our notion of being stoic is not in line with the real vision of stoicism.
    • The idea of stoicism is responding rather than reacting to things.
    • None of us is 100% master of our emotions.

[30:01] “No, being unemotional is not the idea of stoicism; it's more unshakeable. And the idea is more in responding to things rather than reacting to things.” - Click Here to Tweet This[34:02] How the 7-Hour Book Works
    • The 7-hour is the time of the person who they’re working with.
    • It is a seven 1-hour call session over Zoom.

[36:17] Behind the Scenes of the 7-Hour Book
    • Nick’s team guides the authors through the questions, writes the notes, coordinates the marketing, and stitches them together.
    • When synthesizing the notes, they figure out what parts they will include or omit.
    • They also work with designers, printers, and publishers to coordinate cover designs and publications.

[39:27] Working with a Skeptical Author
    • Nick says that the decision to do a book must really come from the authors.
    • It's essential to know your goals for the book and why you chose it as a medium.
    • Books are tangible things people interested in working with you can have on their hands.
    • What is keeping you from creating something meaningful and will draw powerful results such as writing a book?

[46:02] The 7-Hour Work Period[48:42] “When a couple of people get together and start talking, it’s like there’s another force created that’s composed of those ideas that none of the people on their own would have come up with.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • The bare minimum the authors need to do is show up seven times for one hour each time.
    • It’s drawing the juice out of the conversation for the readers.
    • They can produce the book around four to six months after the calls.
    • Nick’s team does the book from the standpoint of entrepreneurs and marketers.
    • You need a book that will resonate with a very select group of people in your market.

[52:56] “You don’t need to have a “New York Times best-selling book.” You need a book that’s going to resonate with a very select group of people in your market and cause them to take whatever actions you want them to take.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:58] The Call-to-Action
    • Real estate investors usually cannot directly solicit funds for their investment.
    • Your call-to-action does not need to follow the format of a "spammy" context.
    • It could be as simple as inputting your email address for readers to contact you if it resonated with them.

    [56:19] Nick’s Recommendations When Starting a Book
    • Carve out an hour to do the thinking and brainstorming.
    • It would allow you to have an idea of what their final destination would be for the book.
    • Make your “why” the starting point.

Job security is a goal most people strive for when they are starting in the real world. And on the other end of the spectrum are people who do not like routines; they do not like being boxed in to repetitive lifestyles. They are not rooted in one place, traveling and working in places they wish to explore. However, only a few leave their jobs to seek freedom and pursue the lifestyle of a digital nomad.

In this episode, we talk to Demian Ross, founder of Rootless Living Magazine. He talks about being homeless, deciding to live in an RV, and jumpstarting his digital magazine to help others who are clueless about what it is like to be a digital nomad.

To connect with Demian, visit their Facebook group or Instagram. You can also find him on YouTube.

    Episode Highlights[02:15] Demian’s Elevator Pitch
    • Demian publishes a print and digital magazine about the lifestyle of being rootless.
    • He also hosts the Rootless Living Podcast. Just like the magazine, it’s a podcast for nomads by nomads.

[03:28] People’s Response on Living as a Nomad
    • Demian has never received a negative response when he tells people he is a nomad.
    • Living as a nomad is a lifestyle. However, some people think it is like being on vacation or camping.

[07:19] What It’s Like Being a Digital Nomad
    • Being a digital nomad means not being rooted in a physical location. You can still own property, but you have the freedom to get up and go.
    • You have the opportunity to work and live wherever you want to.

[07:21] “It (being a digital nomad) goes back to not having a physical location that you're stuck in. It doesn't mean you can't own property, by any means… It's just that you have the freedom to get up and go.” - Click Here to Tweet This[09:31] Remote Work amid a Pandemic
    • Demian thinks that there are obstacles to being a nomad and doing remote work now for some people.
    • Whether people become nomads or not, he hopes they consider doing remote work.

[12:07] The Internet Connection & Being a Digital Nomad
    • Demian feels anxious when the people he works with cannot get a hold of him due to internet connection issues.
    • Having no access to the internet is not as stressful when you only work for yourself.

[16:59] Demian’s Journey to Being a Digital Nomad
    • After losing his job, Demian was homeless for 90 days. He had to give up his place since there was not enough income coming in. For a while, his children lived with other people.
    • He eventually got a new job and a new place, but things had changed, and he realized he no longer wanted to live in Los Angeles.
    • His children and their mother stayed in the new place while Demian moved out into an RV.
    • Listen to the full episode to discover more about his journey!
    • Demian thought about releasing a digital magazine. It took him a long time, but he was able to launch it eventually.

[24:48] “There are two ways that people change. One, there’s this intense focus and decision to make a change. Or there’s this external catalytic event that forces change.” - Click Here to Tweet This[25:26] Where Demian Would Be If He Did Not Become a Nomad
    • If he didn’t become a nomad, Demian thinks he would still have the American dream of having a big house with a big garage.
    • However, he had a real mind shift when he was homeless.
    • When he got rid of most of his things, he felt free.

[34:43] Demian’s Upbringing in Los Angeles
    • Demian’s upbringing was different than most. He knew people of different religions, races, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
    • He thinks the ideas that television shows and movies are trying to paint as reality are not exactly reality.

[40:20] Demian’s Background in Digital Publishing
    • Demian’s background is in print because there was no digital publishing in the 1990s.
    • He believes age does not affect a person’s preferences when it comes to print or digital publications.
    • Some people do not worry about having an internet connection.
    • During this time, Demian is most thankful that they focused on digital subscriptions instead of print.

[38:26] “I wish people jumped in an RV and traveled the country. I think there are so many things you learn about our country, about people, about yourself, living with less, traveling, living in smaller quarters.” - Click Here to Tweet This[44:40] Value Difference Between Print & Digital Publication
    • Print publications can say that they have a particular number of copies in circulation, but you can’t guarantee they were picked up by people.
    • With digital publications, you can be sure that people are receiving and reading it. Demian shares that he has received emails from readers asking about Rootless Living Magazine.
    • Print and digital publications are driven by advertising

[47:47] Educating & Entertaining Consumers Simultaneously
    • When you build trust and relationships with consumers, you are giving away free information to help them truly understand your product or service.
    • You can be a funny salesman and still educate and sell.
    • The educational aspect of the magazine is easy, but the entertaining parts should always be interesting. It should be a story that others have not read about or heard of yet.
    • Telling stories in your perspective can get stale quickly. Demian believes it is more powerful and interesting to bring in other people’s voices.

[54:58] Making Money with a Digital Magazine[51:41] “You can get really stale in your own voice and bringing in other people's voices are really powerful. And I think we've learned that real quick… I'll say it this way, I've been saying it a while. We have a really interesting lifestyle, but our lifestyle doesn't make us interesting.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Demian did a lot of research on business models to use.
    • They also built connections and relationships to make the business work.
    • They started Rootless Living with only $100.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn how Demian started Rootless Living Magazine!

    [01:03:22] Expanding His Audience
    • Demian thinks the fact that people are doing remote work now will springboard their publication.
    • He does not like to think of the pandemic as a lucky charm. He just feels that industries like real estate, campground RV, and hotels will turn upside down after this pandemic.

[01:06:46] What Surprised Demian When He Started Rootless Living
    • Demian has had businesses before. However, aside from him and the people working with him, he’s never had people who are just as passionate about his business.
    • He appreciates that people are grateful and excited about what his team is creating.
    • He likes the community that Rootless Living has built.

[01:06:46] “... I’ve had businesses but I've never had people be really passionate about my business except for me and the people working. I’ve really been surprised about how grateful and appreciative people are for what we're creating. And that's for my life. It's fuel that I just didn't know.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:13:10] What “Go” Means for Demian
    • Demian used to spend time planning things but never doing them.
    • A lot of the thrill and the energy comes from telling people about your great idea.
    • Now, Demian believes it’s better to go and pursue your plans. Take action, do some research, and figure things out along the way.
