Episode Highlights[03:53] Reflecting On The Year 2020
    • Accepting and assessing 2020 allows us to prevent the challenges we faced from happening again in the next year.
    • 2020 has been both a challenge and a blessing. He recently became a grandfather — a "game-changer" in his life.
    • He also experienced a lot of grief seeing people in masks and living in fear. Tim also endured family health issues and coping with the news.
    • Many people went through financial challenges due to businesses shutting down from the lockdowns.
    • It has been a year that no one ever thought we would experience in our lifetimes.

[10:31] Learnings Points And Things We Can Be Grateful For
    • 2020 gave us plenty of opportunities to do better.
    • We have to understand that we are responsible for our success and what we do with our lives.
    • There are some things we can implement to gain control over our success even when things are difficult.
    • Tim talked about the five key growth areas he had observed with himself. He shares his work with his clients and interviews with people.
    • He calls these five key growth areas control, decide, partner, grow, and implement.

[13:49] Five Key Growth Areas: Control
    • Tim felt really out of control during the early months of the year because he felt limited by the travel restrictions imposed during the lockdown period.
    • As a person who loves being in control of his world and situation, the loss of control irritated and drained him tremendously.
    • As we head into 2021, understand what you can control and not worry about the rest.
    • Focusing on the things you can't change will only frustrate you and prevent you from being grateful for the present items in your life.

[18:48] Five Key Growth Areas: Decide
    • Ask yourself: How do I define success?
    • Due to the pandemic, a lot of people's situations had to change.
    • These shifts allowed us to recognize what is essential to us and decide what nourishes our soul, what we're designed and created to do.

[20:47] "I believe that one decision that most of us will have because everything was stripped away over this last year, we're going to decide where we live. And when I say where we live, for those that are followers of Christ, we call that place the Kingdom of God.” - Click Here to Tweet This[22:07] Five Key Growth Areas: Partner
    • Look at the people and resources around you that can help you redefine success or gain success as we move into 2021.
    • Don't isolate yourself; reach out and communicate with people.
    • Understand that there are people around you that are willing to help you, and there are people who need your help — we need each other more than ever.
    • One of the values of having a coach is that it forces interaction with someone who's got your best interest in mind.

[25:01] Five Key Growth Areas: Grow
    • In Carol Dweck's book Mindset, she talked about the two types of people: people who have a growth mindset and people who have a fixed mindset.
    • Read more, listen to podcasts, watch growth-oriented videos on Youtube, or get a mentor.
    • People who aren't growing will feel their lives sink.
    • Commit to growth and become prepared for the difficult times in the future.
    • Feed your mind with things that nourish it.

[27:57] "People that aren't focused and putting an incredibly intense effort into growth and growing themselves . . . I don't want to be that way, and I don't think you want to be that way either." - Click Here to Tweet This[31:07] Five Key Growth Areas: Implement[33:04] "Do something. I know that it will encourage you and help you just as you start picking things off your list. Implement, implement, implement." - Click Here to Tweet This
    • There are times when we feel frozen and confused. It becomes difficult to do the things we need to accomplish.
    • Strategize the things you need to achieve, whether in your business, organization, or family. Get busy doing the things you have control over.
    • Treat your mind like it's a treasure; guard and protect it against the things that may pollute it. Guard what goes into your system.

[34:52] "Treat your mind like it's a treasure — guard it, protect it. Don't let anything get into this mind, or this head, with your eyes, your ears, that will pollute it — that will contaminate it." - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy The Podcast?

    About Glori

Glori Winders is an author, minister, motivator, cook, and entrepreneur. She has published numerous books on food that meet a broad range of dietary restrictions and are allergen-free. Together with her husband, Tim, she has launched new businesses while writing and traveling the world.

If you’d like to reach out to Glori, you may visit her website or connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.

    Episode Highlights[02:11] The Year 2020
    • This year brought about a lot of challenges, but also blessings.
    • Glori left her corporate position just a few weeks before the pandemic began.
    • Glori had started relying less on God when she had a steady paycheck and didn’t have to exercise her faith as much.
    • The main lesson of this year is that we all need to slow down a bit.

    [10:27] Glori’s Work
    • Glori realized that she does not enjoy corporate environments as much as running her own business.
    • She worked as a trusted adviser/chief of staff type position.
    • Glori uses Scrum, which is within the Agile methodology of project management.

    [15:42] Doing Ministry Work
    • Glori knew going back to the corporate world was something she did not want to do.
    • She knew she was supposed to do something in ministry for women.
    • She kept praying to determine what she had to do.
    • Glori feels she’s supposed to help people redefine life on their terms.

[19:56] "I don't care what family you came from. I don't care what your background is. It doesn't have to continue if you didn't like it. And if you did, then make sure it does. If it is a beautiful legacy, then keep it going. But if it wasn't a beautiful legacy, then rewrite it; write what you want." - Click Here to Tweet This[21:53] Taking the Lead
    • Stepping out on her own has been a challenge.
    • You have to be a little selfish with your time so that you can get important tasks done.
    • When someone asks her for something, she usually drops everything she’s doing to do it.

[23:19] “When you're trying to build something, you've got to be a little bit selfish about your time.” - Click Here to Tweet This[27:20] Lessons Learned
    • Glori wants to take the freedoms she grew up with and take them into the future.
    • She feels much of her freedoms have been willingly stripped away.
    • The pandemic has forced her to give up a lot of the things she loved.

    [30:55] On Decorating
    • Her family once had a tree in every room — thirteen trees in total.
    • Glori loves for things to be beautiful.
    • She loves smells because they can bring back memories, calm us down, and help us with our emotions.
    • When decorating, Glori sticks to a color theme to unify everything.
    • She plays ambient sounds like YouTube videos of creeks and snow with jazz or classical music.

    [40:02] Nourishing the Soul
    • When you look at all the senses, you put your body in a place of rest and peace so that you can be more creative.
    • Keeping your environment clean also helps you start your day better and make the place peaceful.
    • You can train your family to do clean-up time and make an effort to keep it that way.

    [48:23] Controlling and Developing Ourselves
    • Honor your strengths.
    • Don’t look at the things you’re weak in and try to build them up.
    • Take your strengths and be excellent at them since they are the gifts you were given.
    • Make sure your body has what it needs to perform at the highest level through supplements, good food, and lots of water.

[50:22] “Just using that very slight edge, little bitty habits that we do or we don’t do every single day. And so they’re either moving us closer to success or closer to failure one way or the other. And we’ve always said, you’re either growing or dying—there’s no status quo; you’re not staying the same.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:37] Glori’s Holiday Tradition
    • Glori has been trying different things over the last few years for Thanksgiving instead of the usual big holiday meal.
    • She let her kids pick out gifts they want to give, and they all wrap them together.
    • This way, the kids got excited about the act of giving, not receiving, and led to them wanting to do things for people.

    [01:00:15] Heading into 2021
    • As a follower of Christ, Glori believes that God is working everything out for her good.
    • Whenever she doesn’t understand why something is going on, she remembers that.
    • Nothing is set in stone. Whatever you’ve been through, you still have time to rewrite a new story and come up with an ending you like.

[01:01:27] “Nothing is set in stone, nothing is what it is because somebody told you it has to be that way. You can change everything.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    About JK

JK Winders is an artist of many trades: a photographer, creative director, documentarian, and avid explorer whose work has been featured in Bespoke Post and Folk Magazine. He is also the creative director for the Seek Go Create Podcast.

You can connect with JK on his website or Instagram.

    Episode Highlights[03:28] Introducing JK
    • JK Winders is a multi-skilled artist who provides creative direction and consultation to people and businesses.
    • JK recently became an uncle.

[05:26] Seek Go Create as a Family Project
    • SGC is a family endeavor.
    • As SGC’s producer, JK follows many different podcasts because every podcast has a unique spin.
    • JK believes SGC can provide a fresh insight on how they tackle the coming season as a family.

    [11:18] The Challenges of 2020
    • For JK, "confusing" is the word that captures 2020, given the inconsistency and uncertainty of all that's happened.
    • Although he was used to working remotely, he still felt angst over the future.
    • JK worked up the courage to plan a large event in Yosemite, but it fell through because of COVID.
    • He felt defeated and personally attacked by the pandemic.
    • After sending refund emails, JK realized that he’s still proud of overcoming his initial reluctance to organize that event in the first place.

[16:56] “Even though it didn't happen, I'm still kind of proud of that willingness to just be like, ‘Yeah, so what if no one responds?’ I'm ready to put something like this out there for people.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:52] Test of Willingness
    • In retrospect, JK feels that most of the year’s happenings are a test of his resolve.
    • He would give himself a B+ or an A- for accepting the turn of events.
    • JK feels that he connected with his community and widened his circle in 2020 more than any other year.

    [22:12] On Content Creation
    • As a photographer, JK initially hesitated to showcase his work on Instagram.
    • During the pandemic, he decided to up his social media game.
    • Now, JK believes that social media offers a platform to inspire people.
    • Even if you have a small following, people are listening to your story. As a content creator, you have a responsibility to release quality work and positivity.

[24:12] “And even if you have a modest following, that amount of people that are willing to listen to you and hear what your message is. . .there are people that are looking and reading and listening. And then it really became more of a responsibility. It's just like I got to make sure that I put good work, positivity out there.” - Click Here to Tweet This[26:40] Best Social Media Practices
    • A strong social media presence starts with knowing that you have a story worth telling.
    • Lean into what makes you unique.
    • Unlike influencers that operate in a barter-like system, JK focused on developing relationships with brands and businesses like Bespoke Post and Folk Magazine.

[26:57] “The thing that I kind of started leaning into was just figuring out how to live my life as a story worth telling. And that has really made this great opportunity to document it in special ways to create my own sense of individualism.” - Click Here to Tweet This[31:45] Building an Instagram Portfolio
    • Instagram has become the go-to place to assess a photographer’s work.
    • A photographer’s Instagram feed should be a good representation of his abilities.

    [33:09] Spur-of-the-Moment Decisions
    • In May 2020, he bought a motorcycle on a whim even though he didn’t have a license nor ridden a bike before.
    • Although he was terrified during the motorcycle safety course, he realized that it was a fun experience once he got over that fear.
    • He believes that purchase was one of his best decisions since it allowed for many joyful moments during the pandemic.

    [36:51] Overcoming Anxiety
    • JK left little room to make mistakes when he bought the bike. He couldn’t carry it nor had a license to drive it.
    • There were many what-ifs after the initial purchase, but his first travel to Sun Road proved it was all worth it.
    • Although the ride was dangerous, the experience ended up one of JK’s most inspiring.
    • After getting over his fear, JK found that it's easier to discuss his other anxieties openly.
    • Although most emotions may be valid, they’re not gospel truth.

[40:55] “So, it does make it a little bit easier to discuss not only just that fear, but fear in general with people and also to just admit when fear is present because I have very much come to the realization with most emotions and feelings, they may be valid, but they're not gospel.” - Click Here to Tweet This[42:21] Cruising Through the Continent
    • JK bought the bike in May and took the motorcycle safety course in June.
    • By July, he was already at Columbia Falls. During August and September, he was at Jackson Hole, Wyoming. By October, he arrived at Grand Junction and planned to spend the rest of the year in Utah.
    • Buying the motorcycle came at a time when he needed rejuvenation.

[47:24] Holidays in the Winders Household
    • JK recalls that the holidays were always a happy childhood experience.
    • Decorating the house before Halloween and keeping it up until February or March was a household tradition.
    • One of his favorites was the family's gift-giving tradition, which shines the spotlight on the giver rather than the receiver.

    [52:04] Expectations for 2021
    • JK looks forward to building his community even more next year.
    • He remains optimistic even though it might not be possible to host events as soon as possible.
    • Although things might permanently change, JK remains excited for a future where he can harness his creativity to navigate the future.

[53:21] “I still believe that things are gonna continue to change. We may never experience normal again, but I'm excited about using creativity to navigate the future as things just continue to evolve.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    • Dulce gave birth on February 8, 2020, after three days of ongoing labor.
    • Her baby’s ‘colicky symptoms’ made her worried because of the recent talks about COVID-19 at the time.

[09:42] Pros and Cons of Having a Baby During COVID-19
    • Dulce did not feel like she was missing out on anything. It was already a relief to see and quarantine together with her family despite being in different households.
    • Aside from being nervous about their food and other resources, her postpartum appointment was postponed. This might have led to her inconsistent thyroid medications.
    • Dulce started getting into a downward spiral. Eventually, she overcame this together with her team of doctors.
    • During this time, she realized the importance of taking care of herself postpartum.

[17:25] Tips on Being a Mom This Pandemic
    • Dulce admits that there might be many contradicting information for moms out there upon giving birth.
    • However, she says that she’s glad she followed her instincts in taking care of her child.
    • She learned that she has to mentally prepare herself for the toughness of labor and the postpartum period.
    • Work on your mindset and shift your perspectives so that you would not let your thoughts get the better of you.

[17:26] “There's a lot of information out there when you are a new mom, I was trying to consume as much information as possible until I realized that it all contradicted each other.” - Click Here to Tweet This[21:47] Dealing with Unmet Expectations

    • Despite preparing her body through her healthy lifestyle, she still experienced over 75 hours of contractions.
    • She shares that stepping into motherhood involves a feeling of wanting to control more than you can.

    [27:35] Lessons from Her Travels
    • After finishing college, Dulce felt the need to leave and get out.
    • Dulce signed up as an au pair to go overseas. She traveled across countries and made friends in places such as Rome and Australia.
    • Despite her occasional frustrations, she saw traveling as a fun experience because she learned a lot about herself.
    • Looking back, Dulce learned that she is incredibly strong. She recalls that she was her best self in those years.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn more about Dulce’s remarkable insights on traveling.

[34:16] “Those years of traveling, of being spontaneous, of going wherever I'm wanted to go. Those were the years that I should have let trickle into my late 20s, and I should have continued being that despite what the world told me.” - Click Here to Tweet This[36:31] Social Media and Mental Health
    • Comparison only makes Dulce think that she needs to look a certain way to be successful. This thinking only made her regret how she chose to live.
    • Dulce reminds us to avoid having to compare ourselves with others.

[37:48] “So we can hear 100 times, don't believe everything you see on social media, that's just their highlight reel. I think that we can hear that a million times. But at the end of the day, if we're still going to have an attitude of comparison … it's still going to affect us.” - Click Here to Tweet This[40:00] Childhood Christmas Memories

    • The Winders have a tradition of giving special gifts on Christmas night, such as a dog or a surprise trip.
    • Listen to this episode to know what Christmas is like in the Winders’ household.

    [45:17] The Storehouse Principle
    • The Storehouse Principle is based on scripture, which talks about setting aside resources for your family.
    • Dulce recommends us to live below our means.
    • Listen to the full episode for more information on how Dulce and her husband allocate their money.

    • Dulce says that she is choosing to let God's will be done. She believes that a big part of her assignment this season is to work on herself for her family.
    • She shares that she has already done the ‘go’ and ‘create’ in the ‘Seek, Go, Create.’
    • Her current focus is on seeking a better understanding of herself, others, and God.

  • How Embracing Transitions Allows You to Grow with Hunter Irving

Life is not linear. As we grow older, we go through various changes and transitions that ultimately turn our life around. As we move away from a place of comfort, we inevitably have to face frightening uncertainty.

These periods can be challenging and even unbearable. But with God's grace and guidance, we can take it as an opportunity to grow and prosper.

This week, we are joined by Hunter Irving, who is in charge of the web design and online presence of Seek Go Create. He shares how he went from being selfish to selfless when he became a father. He also talks about his growth in Bible college and his transition from ministry to a career in sales.

Tune in to the episode to know how you can use transition periods to turn your life around.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Discover how the transitions in your life can change you.
    2. Find out how getting out of your comfort zone can help you grow.
    3. Learn Hunter’s secrets on how you can turn your life around.

    About Hunter

Hunter Irving is in charge of the web design and online presence of the Seek, Go, Create Podcast. He puts together the pieces of the podcast’s YouTube videos. Aside from doing ministry work, he also does sales and web management.

If you'd like to reach out to Hunter, you can contact him on his Instagram.

    Episode Highlights[02:55] Who Is Hunter?
    • Hunter does a lot of different things; he considers himself an opportunist.
    • He’s a father, husband, and a follower of Jesus. Along with that, he does sales and website management on the side to sustain his family.
    • He has always loved 'vision' and looking ahead.

    [05:26] Becoming a Father
    • Upon becoming a father, he became a lot more selfless and a lot more tactful in his approach to life.
    • His natural tendency tends to be just going along with the flow. However, as a dad, there’s a lot more structure in his decisions.

    [08:43] On Meeting Tim
    • He grew up in Virginia and moved out to Colorado for Bible College. Tim was in the same apartment complex when they moved in.
    • He saw Tim at school as a shepherd who guided a lot of people along.
    • Listen to the full episode to know more about how Tim and Hunter met.

[12:54] Experiencing Growth in Bible School
    • He grew up in a Baptist Church and always knew that he wanted to be a pastor.
    • He went through an identity crisis during his first year at Bible College.
    • When the first year ended, he was able to get out of his environment and pushed himself to grow somewhere more conducive.
    • During his second year, he started to get a vision, and he shifted his personality to support others. By this time, he got closer to God.

[15:27] “You know, I could have tried harder, I know that. But sometimes people need to be reached out to, and that's what I needed, and I know that a lot of people needed that.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:07] On Loneliness
    • Loneliness happens because of the lack of depth in relationships and the feeling of not being valued.
    • Being in the young and cool crowd feels good for a moment. However, Hunter says that he would have zero drive, purpose, or vision at the end of the day.

[21:48] Hunter’s Background and Path to Bible School
    • For Hunter, if he didn’t go to Bible School, he probably would have made mistakes that would not be his life’s finest moments.
    • It was a defining time for him when his family shifted to full gospel movement when he was 15.
    • Transitional periods and getting removed from a comfortable place enable growth.
    • When they switched churches, he stepped into a lot of leadership and consistency.
    • His father taught him the importance of integrity and proper work ethics while his mom taught him grace and forgiveness.

[26:18] Secrets to Turning Your Life Around
    • Start with understanding the situation you're in. Otherwise, you're going to be stuck where you are.
    • You look, understand what’s going on, execute, and create something new to take place. Seek to understand your life.
    • Hunter says that you also need outside feedback like counseling and opening up to people.

[26:20] “If you don't have an understanding on whether there's an issue or not in your life, or understanding that something needs to change in your life, then you're just going to be stuck in where you are until you get to that point.” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:52] Navigating Ministry and Sales
    • Hunter helped a friend start a ministry. When his friend got married, he handed it over to Hunter, where he took leadership.
    • They were treating it like a church by doing outreaches and videos. Upon planning to get married, he had to transition away from the ministry.
    • Hunter is also preoccupied with mobile and online web management, as well as sales.
    • For anyone who wants to be in full-time ministry, don’t discredit where you’re at because God will help you grow.
    • Listen to the full podcast to know more about this transitional period in Hunter’s life.

[36:18] “Don’t discredit where you’re at, and just let God teach you where you’re at, and He’ll show you many things, and He’ll grow you in the areas you need to grow.” - Click Here to Tweet This[38:34] Moving Forward with Ministry
    • With a Westernized culture, Hunter says that we have overly complicated the church because of different viewpoints.
    • Whether it’s ministry, family, or work, Hunter believes that God wants us to be tactful with everything we do.
    • Unfortunately, many ministries are only "shooting from the hip."
    • Hunter says that he remains utterly open with the ministry in terms of what God wants.

    [42:59] Hunter’s Expectations for 2021
    • Hunter’s number one expectation is that his family will come out of the pandemic better and stronger.
    • He is determined not to let the pandemic dictate their growth and success.
    • They expect to transition out of Colorado and leave behind the stress that this year has brought them.
    • As 2021 sets in, Hunter shares that he wants to leave the country’s ‘divided mentality’ from 2020.
    • He encourages everyone to acknowledge and love people despite them thinking differently than you.

[45:37] “Because obviously, when you encounter someone that thinks differently from you, sometimes you want to resist that. But I think just loving everyone around you, I think that's what I'll put the expectation on myself for. Try to resist that mentality of division.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

Episode Highlights[03:11] Not Born a Murderer
    • During his life sentence, a passage from C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity resonated with Quan.
    • This quote reminded him that he was not born a murderer. He could transform his inner world by making intentional and correct choices from then on.
    • With this, he found liberation and freedom before his parole.

    • He previously operated from a place of loneliness, anger, and rage.
    • St. Francis of Assisi’s life sparked a change in Quan's perception of life.

    [15:42] Quan’s Background
    • He was born in Vietnam. Right after the Vietnam War, their family settled in Provo, Utah.
    • Because of the French colonization, the Vietnamese were either Catholic or Buddhist. Quan is a Roman Catholic.
    • He experienced racism as a kid. He shares an experience where he couldn't do anything when his brother got beaten by other kids.
    • His father created the Vietnamese Refugee Association to help refugees adjust to the country.
    • Quan wanted to be just like his father and pursue the military.

    [23:43] Not Fitting In
    • After his father got diagnosed with leukemia, they decided to move to Southern California with their extended family.
    • It was the first time he went to school with kids who are not predominantly white. However, he didn't feel like he fit in because they said he was “whitewashed.”
    • He continued to fit that narrative later on in his life, looking for confirmation in other experiences.

[26:17] His Father’s Passing and Blaming God
    • During his first communion, he prayed to God to let his father live. That Sunday morning, he found out that his father had died the night before.
    • In his mind, he thought that God killed his dad.
    • Unlike him, his younger siblings only knew their father as always in and out of the hospital.
    • After that, he blamed his wrong choices, particularly his arrest, on God and the American justice system.

[32:33] The Gang Life and Culture
    • The gang’s brotherhood fulfilled the part of him that wanted to fit in. However, there was also an inner conflict of living up to expectations.
    • It was easier and more comfortable for him to settle in the gang and gain recognition there.
    • There are rules in the gang and prison culture, which you have to abide by like a sense of honor.

[41:15] His Life Before and During Prison
    • He was in prison for 16 years for his last case and went to different state prisons during that period.
    • Before the murder, he took a management position at the Gallup Organization, bringing his hopes up until they said he was not a fit.
    • It was not until he became suitable for parole that he realized he was turned down because of his history as a convicted criminal.
    • He used the gang to vent emotions and regain the sense of power he lost from getting turned down.
    • He didn’t feel any sense of remorse when he pulled the trigger during the fight. At the time, he saw it as an accomplishment.

    [51:17] The Spark of Hope
    • Helping others in prison sparked hope within Quan.
    • His trajectory changed after being coached by someone named Donnie.
    • From then on, Quan started reading books on personal responsibility, choice, and mindfulness.
    • With this newfound mindset, he started sharing the same concept with the people around him.

[54:25] “So just slowly seeing little seeds that I'm planting and seeing where they're starting to sprout up, and then seeing what they're learning and they're sharing with others, and I could just see like the whole fabric of prison life for me just changed while I was in there.” - Click Here to Tweet This[55:05] Being a Bookworm and His Spiritual Journey
    • In every prison he was, he was known to read three or four books simultaneously.
    • Quan got engrossed in books, learning how he can apply what he learned to a life out of prison.
    • The Bible's themes were in alignment with how he saw the world and how he wanted to live.

    [01:00:37] Being Forgiven
    • He held onto the label of being a murderer for a long time.
    • It was a long process of constant refinement for Quan to accept that he can be forgiven.
    • He became very mindful of the words people were using, which gave him a glimpse of how they saw themselves.
    • It was liberating for him to choose his way to every conflict.

[01:06:06] “It was, for me, a sense of such liberating purpose because I can just choose my way to every conflict that's coming on. Whether it's my mind saying crazy things, my thoughts, or other people saying things, I could still choose to find my way through all of this.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:06:29] Outside the Prison Walls

    About the Savvy Team

Brendan Kenny is the CEO and co-founder of the Savvy Dating Game. He graduated from Delbarton High School and is currently a finance major at Villanova School of Business.

Fernando Delgado, COO and co-founder of Savvy, earned his bachelor’s degree focused in economics and Japanese from Villanova University. Before creating Savvy, he interned in Rimrock Capital Management, LLC; LUISS EnLabs; and Boenning & Scattergood, Inc.

Jack Maginnes is the CTO of Savvy. He is currently completing his bachelor’s degree in computer science at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He served previous internships in Nike, NCR Corporation, and VF Corporation.

Download Savvy on the Apple App Store. You can also visit their website or follow them on Instagram.

Episode Highlights[02:45] What’s the Savvy Dating App?
    • Savvy is the world's first live mobile dating game. It goes live every night from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time across the United States.
    • One woman and four men play the games. The girl has three rounds of questions to ask the guys, who have 30 seconds to respond. She eliminates one man per round in March Madness style.
    • The last man standing matches with the girl, and they can talk in a private chat box that expires in 24 hours.

[03:57] Does the World Need Another Dating App?
    • The dating app market is very saturated, but Savvy is significantly different from its competitors by being a personality-based matchmaking service.

[08:39] What’s the Current Status of Savvy?
    • Savvy officially launched toward the end of August and is currently available on Apple products only.
    • They are currently headed towards the 10,000-download mark.

    [11:47] The Beginnings of Savvy
    • Brendan and Fernando studied at Villanova together. They wanted to create something that would improve the social scene on campus.
    • Savvy was well-received at Villanova, so they started pitching the app to other universities like USC and UCLA, specifically to sororities and fraternities.

    [15:35] The Team’s Backgrounds
    • Fernando comes from a family of entrepreneurs.
    • Brendan was brought up to work at a bank, but he didn't see himself in that career.
    • Jack took computer science because it’s an industry where you can do something and potentially touch a million people without spending a dime.

[26:41] The Ups and Downs of Creating Savvy
    • If you’re trying to make an app, you need to build your team.
    • They initially outsourced their projects. However, none of the development companies they hired could build a scalable, bug-free, and launchable product.
    • Brendan and Fernando’s biggest mistake was they were not Computer Science majors. They needed Jack to complete the team.

    [33:14] Jack Joins Savvy
    • Jack does patchwork because each outsourced development agency has its own design patterns and thought processes.
    • They had to balance getting the app out in the market quickly and making sure the app works.
    • Currently, Savvy still has technical debt from the bad practices that have built up from outsourced development.

[37:50] “If you're working in a specific section of the code, leave it better than you found it.” - Click Here to Tweet This[38:36] Funding and Profitability
    • The app is self-funded. The team has reached out to VCs and angels, but none have led to a finalized deal.
    • There is no pro version of the app yet. The current revenue stream is based on a subscription model.
    • They have an upcoming referral program for the app.
    • They are also planning to insert product placement questions once they hit the 200,000-user mark.

[46:46] The Start-Up Culture of Working Together
    • The team is living all over the country right now. They only meet and work virtually.
    • The team is unified by building and sustaining the app as long as possible, getting funding down the line, and eventually meeting and living in a centralized location.
    • They use Slack and Zoom to track each other’s progress and promote togetherness within the team virtually.

[43:25] “You have to be really careful with who you raise your first round with because that's who you're getting married to.” - Click Here to Tweet This[51:15] Savvy’s Strengths and Weaknesses[52:31] “The mindset I feel like we've all brought is things will go bad. We've proven that. It's happened time and time again. But it's how you respond. And I feel like every time things have gone bad, we've always responded with doubling up the effort, and then we eventually get it done.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • For Brendan, the company’s number one asset is perseverance. Meanwhile, the biggest flaw for him is it’s their first time creating an app.
    • For Jack, another weakness is that their development team is early in their technical careers. However, their team is very good at self-learning.
    • Fernando finds that one of their strengths is building a community of users they connect with through their social media accounts. He also agrees with Brendan and Jack that it’s a downside to learn everything on the fly.

[54:18] “When you are building something, you have so many technologies, and every day something new comes out. So when you come from more of a corporate background and more of a structured background or you've built something like this before, it's very easy to pick and choose the technologies in an efficient manner.” - Click Here to Tweet This[57:52] Savvy Ambassadors
    • Brand ambassadors were introduced during the early stages of Savvy.
    • Brendan and Fernando wanted to personalize the whole brand by bringing students who believed in Savvy and tried to promote it on their campus.

[01:01:29] The Philosophy of the Game
    • Data shows that the majority of dating app users are guys. They also use these apps twice as often as women. That’s why they settled on a four-to-one guy-to-girl ratio.
    • They plan to launch Ladies’ Night, which reverses the ratio to solve their issues in promoting the app to colleges with 50:50 guy-to-girl ratio.

    [01:04:57] Savvy’s Biggest Needs
    • Savvy is working on their marketing to get to the 10,000-user mark.
    • Users equate to feedback, which they can use to stabilize the app and fix bugs.

    [01:06:40] What’s Next?
    • The team wants to achieve the 10,000-download mark by Halloween.
    • Their next goal is to get 10,000 active users by Christmas.

[01:07:25] “When you think downloads, or referral programs, and networking effects, organic growth, word of mouth, is when it really hits. That's the small goals from a business perspective, from a user base perspective.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

  • How to Take Personal Responsibility of Your Own Success with Glen Dunzweiler

Society has conditioned us to be prejudiced against the homeless. We see them as failures — the dregs of society. But these are people who have gone through struggles and hardships, and they need direct action from their community to help them get back on their feet. They need help, not hate.

In this episode, we talk to Glen Dunzweiler, a filmmaker and producer. Glen had a story to tell, but he didn’t wait for someone else to do it for him. He went out and took action himself. He takes us behind the scenes of creating his books and documentary about the homeless. He also talks about video production as a platform to tell the stories of the homeless.

    • At school, Glen was told that he was a good writer. He had a natural affinity for writing and was told he had a voice.

    • The housing crisis in 2008 was a powerful eye-opener for him.
    • He was brought up with the idea that poverty equates to legitimacy when pursuing a career in the arts. This concept handicaps many students.

[12:46] “Believe me, my joke is I almost went homeless trying to help the homeless. And then I realized, wait, hold on, what am I doing here? I can't sustain this, I can't help anybody if I go onto the streets. It's not going to happen.” - Click Here to Tweet This[13:51] Breaking from the System
    • We get an education and a job, but many jobs are not sustainable and don't pay enough.
    • The current system promises that education guarantees a better quality of life, but that is not necessarily true.
    • Students go to college and follow their passions but have no market for their skills after graduation.
    • Businesses will try to sell you a "good story" in which education and a job guarantee a better life.

[18:49] A Different Definition of Success
    • Students go to college because they don't know what else to do.
    • We have not trained our students and children to stand on their own.
    • Everyone needs to be responsible for their success.

[22:47] Backstory Of A Degree in Homelessness
    • Glen's book delves into who the homeless are, how they got there, how they can get out of it, and how we can make support sustainable.
    • The title is a challenge and reality check to readers.
    • Don’t wait for someone to provide you with worth as a human being.
    • Glen emphasizes that we should not wait to take hold of our success.
    • Glen wants direct action from communities to help people living on the streets.

[24:46] “But I’ve seen what denial looks like and it’s sleeping in your car, and it’s living in poverty. And it’s knowing how waiting for someone to give you worth as a human being. I don’t want to live like that. I don’t want anybody to live like that.” - Click Here to Tweet This[32:53] The Path of Least Inconvenience

    • Current educational systems have failed. It teaches students to pass tests and not to think.
    • He grew up with the idea that life is supposed to be hard. He relays that if life is not hurting you, you are not doing it right.
    • Through personality or life experiences, Glen advises us to look at life as an adventure. If not, you will be afraid of everything.
    • People enjoy stability too much to change the current failed systems.

[35:26] “We are all built with our gifts and talents, and some of us can see through that and decide work is what we want and working hard is what we want and those people will succeed. almost, no matter what.” - Click Here to Tweet This[47:59] What yHomeless Is All About
    • Glen interviewed homeless people and homeless service providers for his documentary.
    • Glen performed research on how people become homeless, what the lives of homeless people are like, how to get out of homelessness, and what to do with the housing community.
    • yHomeless challenges people to know who the homeless truly are.

    [54:27] The Data & Statistics
    • According to Glen, there isn’t enough accurate statistical data on the homeless.
    • Glen spoke to over 100 people for the interview, wherein a third were homeless service providers.
    • He has spoken to a wide variety of people living outside society.

[01:05:55] Why It’s Hard to Find Inspiration from the Homeless
    • People are prejudiced against homeless people. They unintentionally view homeless people as a failure or problematic.
    • It is always easier to make celebrities as inspirational figures; it is easier to capture someone with a smile on their face.
    • There is a lot to learn from people who have lost everything, and it is essential to communicate this to people.

[01:07:54] “There’s a lot to learn from people that have lost everything.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:08:38] Solutions to Homelessness
    • We need wins; look at a direct return of investment to keep us inspired to continue investing.
    • Women and children take less effort to get off the street. Wins, even easy ones, make people feel good and inspire communities to push for more challenging cases.
    • We let go of those who walk away from the program. Some people walk away because religion is attached.
    • As in business, “no” means to move on — take the next call. Let go of the ones who walk away and keep looking for wins.

[01:11:42] Who Is Responsible for Solving Homelessness?
    • Direct community action is the best action.
    • Donations aren't enough. They help people sustain themselves on the street, not get them out of homelessness.
    • Once bureaucracy is involved, we get farther away from direct action. The efforts go to paying someone to exist in the system and not helping the person directly.

[01:14:27] What Success Looks Like for Glen
    • Even if his programs fail, Glen says he’ll try again.
    • Success for him means finding a way to start putting ideas in action, see if they work, and get wins.
