Episode Highlights[04:47] Helping Other People See Their Purpose
    • One of Jennifer’s clients' problems is knowing what they want to do but not knowing how to communicate it.
    • It is important to understand that your message is a living, breathing organism; it evolves over time.

[04:55] “It's hard to see the message when you're the one in the bottle.” - Click Here to Tweet This[10:52] Successful Marketing in the Past vs. Today
    • In the past, advertising was a one-way conversation, where the focus was more on persuasion.
    • Today, we have various platforms such as social media and email. There’s now more dialogue.
    • Consumers nowadays crave authenticity—they want to connect with real people and real brands.
    • You have to make sure that you are coming from the right place. A sale must not be your main goal.
    • Start with your intention. People should feel invited, and not obligated, to accept your offer.

[21:31] Jennifer’s Journey and Lessons Learned
    • Jennifer grew up in an entrepreneurial family, so she knew ever since then that she wanted to become an entrepreneur.
    • As the only one who chose not to be part of their family business, she was hungry to succeed and to prove something to her family.
    • She launched her first business without any content marketing, assuming that people would find her and buy from her. In the end, she didn’t get the results she wanted.
    • Just as she was about to give up, she came across a podcast talking about direct response marketing. It led her to realize the importance of providing value to your ideal client.
    • Make sure you focus on who your ideal client is and communicate with them in their language.

[28:37] “It was a defining moment for me. I felt so empowered to then actually recognize, ‘Oh, wow, there's very specific things that I could do to make sure this gets in the hands of the right people.’” - Click Here to Tweet This[31:50] On Copywriting with Dyslexia
    • Jennifer grew up partially dyslexic, so she experiences difficulty with spelling words.
    • While being committed to her business, she realized that to learn how to market, she had to learn how to write copy.
    • The more momentum she gained in marketing, the more people asked her to come up with marketing campaigns and write copy for them.
    • She decided to look at it as God giving her these opportunities to build up her skills and capabilities and grow into it.
    • The key to all of it is simplicity.

[40:48] The Importance of a Vision
    • Once you master copywriting and know how to sell in print, you can sell anything that matters to you.
    • Jennifer never thought of copywriting as her calling but as an important skill God wanted her to learn.
    • A vision helps entrepreneurs clarify and communicate their purpose.
    • Vision and copy go together because a vision can only go so far as our ability to communicate and get others into it. For a successful marketing copy, you have to include the vision and the message.
    • You need to understand the direction, brand message, target audience, and offers of the company. What is your message, and how do you communicate it?

[41:31] “But what they needed was, in order for us to craft an email campaign or a sales page or a webinar, we needed to understand ‘Where are you ultimately headed?’ Where is the company going? What is the brand message?” - Click Here to Tweet This[43:42] How to Get into a Person’s Head
    • This is an important question to ask for you to understand your ideal client and how they communicate.
    • Knowing what matters most to your consumers is essential to achieve successful marketing that converts.
    • First, identify who your ideal client is. Who is the person you want to attract? Focus on their psychographics instead of demographics.
    • Make a list of who you think your ideal clients would be and interview them.
    • The three main things you should know are their current challenges and frustrations, their ultimate desire or destination, and their fears and objections.

    [52:21] Gathering Data
    • You can make a list of your ideal clients and have a 20-minute phone interview with them. Offer them something of value in return for their time.
    • For surveys, determine if the ones you’re sending your surveys to are your ideal clients.
    • Sometimes, how people write and fill out a survey is different from how they would communicate in real life.

[56:16] Social Media: Is It a Blessing or a Curse?
    • From the perspective of algorithms, it is a blessing to receive instant feedback from people on social media.
    • But we have to ask different questions to make sure we are interpreting the data correctly.
    • There is so much power to social media, but it can also be a curse.
    • You can find many different ways to grow your business successfully without using it.
    • Jennifer is looking for ways to make social media work as a blessing.

[01:00:54] Coming Up With Your Message
    • Start by getting into the practice of envisioning on a daily basis.
    • What excites you? Who would you love to work with? What would you love to do?
    • Understand that it is a journey, and the vision you are building is one that you actually want.

[01:01:05] “Where do I even start? Do I have a message to share? What is my vision? You’re absolutely not alone. All of these feelings are normal. And then, I guess, ruining the punch-line that may be coming later, is they don't go away. The question is, ‘What is my vision? What is my message?’” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:04:12] Jennifer’s Organization Code and Core Values
    • The code Jennifer has for her organization contains five things: expansive growth, compassionate honesty, aligned action, full ownership, and fun and joy.
    • She places importance on value-based decision-making.
    • Anyone on her team can challenge decisions made as a company if they do not align with those core values.

[01:09:36]  “I think every single one of us is a creator. So why it resonates is, we're creating every single moment, every single thought. And being conscious creators so that we are creating what we want, versus what we don't want. And if we just keep following that, we're gonna continue to build a really beautiful life.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    • Barry Habib shares his experiences as a businessman and speaker on mortgage and real estate markets. He also had experience as a producer and actor in popular shows.
    • To handle these all at once, Barry follows a simple philosophy of spoiling his customers and employees. With this core value, he diversified in different lines of work.
    • Barry noted that the cornerstone of success is removing the point of friction with your customers and employees.

[04:41] “You want to give a great customer experience, a great employee experience. If you start with that and put a lot of work behind it, you have a really good foundation to go across any business line that you want.” - Click Here to Tweet This[05:08] The Present and Future of Mortgage and Real Estate Business
    • Barry has found great success in forecasting both real estate and mortgage rates. He correctly called the turning point in the housing market back in 2006 before the economic crash.
    • With his extensive mortgage knowledge, he pointed out the importance of looking at the right metrics in making accurate real estate forecasts. For instance, looking at the population growth and other related factors allowed him to predict the market correctly.
    • Barry emphasized that you need to do the math to know the real value of these metrics.
    • Tune in to the episode to learn more about how Barry Habib does this!

[14:53] Making Sense of the Stock Market
    • Right now, we want everything to run instantaneously the way we see fit. On the other hand, media bias tends to gravitate more toward negative news.
    • Barry stated that the most important thing is to be cautious and alert. As a contrarian, he becomes cautious when there is too much euphoria and greed on the market.
    • Efforts that push interest rates to zero create the wealth effect and income inequality.
    • Barry Habib pointed out that the current hype in market conditions is similar to what happened 21 years ago. The pump and dump that has happened currently in the stock markets is a Ponzi scheme.

    [26:49] Barry’s Advice
    • What people should make of this information depends on their income, debt, age, and goals.
    • Barry currently has eyes on assets such as gold, silver, and Bitcoin. He is also interested in real estate and long-term bond markets.
    • Chasing the craziness in the stock market is similar to gambling. Barry emphasizes the importance of making sure to analyze the stock that you’re investing in.

[32:57] Barry’s Experience in Other Pursuits

    • Barry shares his secret to being magnetic: make everyone you come into contact with feel better and smarter.
    • Barry created his own medical imaging business. Guided with his principle of customer satisfaction, he aimed to deliver prompt readings to anxious patients.

[36:16] “Because who doesn’t wanna create that? Who doesn’t want to be in touch with somebody that makes them feel better, that makes them feel smart? You can do that for people, but you can’t give what you don’t have. So you have to put in the time in advance.” - Click Here to Tweet This[38:24] Working in the Entertainment Arena
    • Barry took advantage of the opportunity to star in a movie to network with people. Through this, he was able to star in nine more films.

All you have to do is see it, and then pick it up and do good with it for others.” - Click Here to Tweet This [43:36] On Redefining Success
    • Barry pointed out that a common thread amongst successful people is that they have an optimistic mindset. So if you want to be successful, you have to be more optimistic.
    • The first thing that you have to do, he said, is to be mindful and purposeful. He shares the importance of reflecting on why you are doing the things you do.
    • He then talks about setting goals and finding out your destination. Despite facing many turns along the way, he believes that we would always get to our goal.
    • Barry noted that some successful people are unhappy because they lack fulfillment. This fulfillment comes from helping others.

[45:09] “But the thing that having that mindset of gratitude allows you to do is deal with the invariable tough situations that are going to happen. Because I’ve got a rule that if something upsets me, I’m human, I’m gonna get pissed. But let me keep it to two minutes because I don’t want it to rob my joy.” - Click Here to Tweet This[48:13] The Daily Habits of a Successful High-Performer
    • Barry shares how he starts every day by saying what he is grateful for. Having this mindset of gratitude allowed him to deal with tough situations.
    • Barry admits that he can still get distracted. But he recognizes that meditation and exercise are good habits to maintain.
    • Lastly, a great part of a daily routine is trying to do good.
    • Barry further added the importance of reaching out and showing appreciation to others.

    [53:59] Barry’s Book

Episode Highlights[04:15] Working with the Stars
    • As a celebrity events planner, Andrea is no stranger to the ultra-rich and famous. However, she explains that working with her clientele isn’t all that different.
    • She gets to see a backstage version of these people and helps them create a vision.
    • This perspective got her into mindful business coaching.
    • For Andrea, event planning is less about striving for perfection but more about striking a partnership and moving forward with your life’s purpose.

    [09:34] Looking Within
    • In 2016, despite achieving so much success with her event planning business, Andrea felt misaligned.
    • She felt as if she outgrew some parts of her business and that the industry standard no longer resonated with her core values.
    • For Andrea, if it doesn’t fit with her inner purpose, it had to go.
    • She shifted from fancy Tiffany champagne glasses she gave to new clients to handmade organic candles crafted by African women.
    • Rather than comparison to others, Andrea learned to look within and let her internal compass guide her decisions.

    [14:37] How to H.O.S.T.
    • In life, you can either be a guest who takes what is offered or be a host and actively control your life story.
    • The H.O.S.T. acronym helps you be a host in life. H stands for honoring your why, O means owning who you are, S means shifting your perspective, and T stands for taking inspired action.
    • The H.O.S.T. method helps you appreciate the good in life and act from a place of abundance.

    [18:37] Catalysts for Change
    • There were catalysts that pushed her to change. In 2015, she became a mother.
    • If she had to spend time away from her family, it had to be important. It had to be something she was deeply passionate about.
    • After the 2016 election, Andrea observed a growing political division.
    • Andrea chose to talk about bringing people together as a public speaker. In an environment marked by conflict, she emphasized the power of connection.

    [21:46] Getting the Message Out
    • Andrea observed that small business owners often find it difficult to get their message out or reach their target audience.
    • The number one question people ask her is: how do I find clients?
    • You have to participate in discussions actively and engage with your target clients. You have to be proactive. Make your opportunities.

    [24:07] Entrepreneurial Beginnings
    • At 13 years old, Andrea started her first business selling cookies for her Girl Scout troop.  She shares that the experience taught her how to handle rejection.
    • After working at a camp for kids with disabilities, she decided to launch a similar project in her hometown. The project ran for a decade.
    • Andrea decided to become a public school teacher but only taught for a year after realizing it wasn’t for her.
    • She got into cooking and studied at a culinary arts school, which eventually led to event planning.

    [32:22] Pursuing Your Passion
    • Andrea feels there’s a high percentage of people miserable with their lives.
    • Entrepreneurs usually break out of this cycle.
    • Most of us think the security of a steady paycheck is more comfortable than launching our own business. But this might not necessarily be true.
    • Andrea helps people rediscover their life’s purpose and put in the work to make their dream a reality.

    [35:03] Rewiring Your Brain
    • A trained hypnotherapist, Andrea explains that external forces shape our decision-making process at a very young age.
    • These forces influence our thoughts, guide our actions, and inform the results.
    • However, these thoughts can limit you from exploring the fullness of a possibility.
    • If we can rewire these messages, it becomes easier to tap into our passion and participate in life differently.

    [38:34] Coaching Business
    • Andrea usually works with service-based entrepreneurs seeking to scale their business.
    • She offers not only mindset training but also practical business strategies.
    • Through group programs and one-on-one sessions, Andrea helps her clients dive deep into their goals.

    [41:17] Learning Curves
    • Entrepreneurs tend to struggle with aspects of their business that they don't specialize in.
    • There’s a disconnect between their vision and the operational needs of the business.
    • For Andrea, this is why communities are important. You don't have to work alone.
    • Having a community of like-minded individuals can cut the learning curve significantly.
    • Most people go into business not only for money but also to gain access to things that matter most in life.

    [47:08] Finding Your Life’s Purpose
    • If you’re struggling to find your life’s purpose, ask yourself these three important questions.
    • First, what are my unique talents and gifts? Second, what are my core values? Lastly, what brings me joy in the sense that I could do this all day, every day?
    • Once you put these three together, it becomes easier to move closer to who you truly are and what you are called to do.
    • You have nothing to lose by taking a step in the direction of your life’s purpose and passion.

    [52:29] Moving Forward
    • After guesting on several podcasts, Andrea was inspired to start her own podcast.
    • She also looks forward to growing her Facebook community.
    • For Andrea, “create” struck more than going and seeking. Her passion for creative expression fuels her desire to help fellow entrepreneurs share their gifts to the world.

    5 Powerful Quotes

[10:54] “And at a certain point, I decided this just isn't good enough. If it doesn't align deeply with my purpose, it has to go. And so, I overhauled everything about my branding. Everything.”

[25:23] “Honestly, a lot of the obstacles that I find that entrepreneurs have to selling has so much to do with avoiding a possible rejection than the opportunity to hear Yes. And I have to say more than anything.”

[33:07] “You know, I'm fortunate in working with entrepreneurs, who are mostly the kind of people who say: that's not cutting it, I do deserve to be happy, I do deserve to be the source and the creator of that.”

[44:38] “It's about helping people to step into that real CEO role in their business, and be able to do the strategic thinking, to continue to evolve the business, so that it can lead to the ultimate-- what I believe we all go into business for--true entrepreneurial freedom.”

[47:57] “ So I think the first question to ask yourself is, what are my unique talents and gifts? Like what do people thank me for? Where do I know that I excel? Sometimes, when we ask ourselves these questions, we can kind of get a little bit humble.”

Episode Highlights[03:46] The Importance of People in Business
    • You can’t do anything without people in your company.
    • When you have a highly engaged workforce, you already have your business moving in the right direction.
    • Every single one of your employees must know exactly what they are doing, the importance of that, and what direction they are going in.
    • People will always rise to the level of your leadership.

[04:17] “When you have a very highly engaged workforce, a workforce that is very dialed in, a workforce that knows the purpose, and they know the ‘why’, doesn't always mean that it's going to be rosy and beautiful. But if they know that, then you've got your business moving in the right direction. That’s what’s key and important.” - Click Here to Tweet This[05:59] The Biggest Mistakes You Can Make in HR
    • The first benchmark to be considered a salaried employee is the minimum pay threshold. This is under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
    • Second, you cannot have a part-time employee as a salaried employee unless they’re the company’s owner.
    • You have to put certain behaviors in place, such as not working more than the number of hours you have set.

[10:21] Thoughts on the Entrepreneurial Mindset
    • For entrepreneurs, there is a certain mindset of working 24/7 and doing whatever it takes.
    • To Brenda, there is nothing wrong with that.
    • What’s important is when you build a business, HR should be a part of your executive leadership team.
    • This will give a strong competitive advantage to the company.

    [16:20] On Working from Home
    • When you work from home, there are more distractions.
    • Brenda finds it intriguing that in the last 12 months, we’ve seen businesses figure how to work things out faster.
    • In business, you have to make fast decisions. But in HR, you not only have to be fast, but you also have to be thorough.
    • The current situation showed employers that you could still run a company with your employees working from home, and it probably saves them money in the long run.
    • You need to have the right culture in place and people whom you can trust with you.

[19:16] “In HR, we can't do that (make low-risk decisions). When we make a decision with not enough information, we actually open the company up for risk.” - Click Here to Tweet This[28:42] On Bringing People Back in the Office
    • If any company is looking at bringing people back in, they have to follow the local health department’s recommendations.
    • Next, you have to look at company policy and figure out how to work things out.
    • Specifically, you have to be careful with mandating vaccines. There are many complicated factors involved, and an employee can come after you in court if something goes wrong.

[30:47] At this point, I don't think that anybody can take into consideration the cultural aspect of returning people to work as a benefit, because numerically, we're beyond the pandemic numbers. - Click Here to Tweet This[40:49] How Brenda Wound Up in HR
    • During her early management years, she discovered that she excelled at jobs like making sure the employee files were good.
    • She found out that she was very capable of managing a group of people and improving their performance.
    • She applied for an internal position at another company and found that she liked sorting through people’s issues and using business methodologies.
    • After that, she went back to school to get her degree.

    [52:18] Brenda’s HR Rules
    • There are many assumptions when dealing with employee issues, so you have to get as much concrete, significant, and definitive information as you can.
    • The body of government that tells you to be compliant with the law is the same body that will put you in a position to violate it.
    • Be consistent—it does not matter if you are consistently good or consistently bad. What you do for one, you should do for all.
    • You’re never too small to get caught. You have to evaluate everything that happens in your organization.
    • There are always two sides to a story. The truth always lies somewhere in the middle of that.

Episode Highlights[05:25] Disclaimers About This Episode
    • If you're right where you need to be and know what you were created to do, you may want to skip this.
    • Still, it doesn't hurt to listen and reassess where you are.
    • I do not have all the answers.
    • I believe that it’s difficult to talk about this topic without having some type of faith involved.

[09:35] Comparing Your Purpose with Others
    • Despite the negativity in your life, I believe you have a purpose.
    • I don’t believe some people have more important purposes than others.
    • Don’t let material things gauge your life’s successes.
    • Because of social media and how the world operates, it’s easy to compare yourself to others.
    • We have to stop comparing and start lifting each other up instead.

[10:46] “Wealthy leaders do not have a more important purpose than the mom raising two children on a tight budget.” - Click Here to Tweet This[15:17] You Are Where You Need to Be
    • Not only is there no need to compare, but I also don’t want you to believe you should be doing something else.
    • I don’t want to leave you thinking what you’re doing isn’t your purpose and that you need to stop.
    • You might be where you ought to be.
    • Your current situation might even show you what you should be doing.

     [18:17] Culture and Purpose
    • The generations before us grew up in a different time.
    • They were far too busy to think about purpose in the first place.
    • They were consumed with living their lives, bringing food to the table, and having gratitude for being alive.
    • With our present culture, we may be making a bigger deal of our purpose than we should.
    • Just like the generations, we should be thankful and acknowledge the things we have now.

    [23:15] Leisure Time
    • The generations before us didn’t have much time to rest.
    • They didn’t have a lot of free time to sit around because they were busy working hard every day of their lives.
    • They didn’t have the luxury to pause and wonder about their purpose in life.
    • At present, we have social media and more time to ourselves to ask about our purpose in life.

[26:00] The Systems We Function and Operate In
    • There are two systems in the world: The Kingdom of God and the System of the World.
    • The passage in Matthew 6:33 captures the difference between these two systems.
    • I followed the System of the World for a large portion of my life.
    • However, I realized I couldn't find my purpose using that system.
    • Instead, you should pursue your purpose in the Kingdom of God.

    [28:33] The Kingdom of God
    • I chased success and purpose in the System of the World until a life-changing event happened.
    • While studying the Kingdom of God, I realized the goal of life doesn’t rest on money, status, or titles.
    • Succeeding in your business and getting the luxuries of life are simply byproducts of seeking first the Kingdom of God.
    • There are still some universal things we must do regardless of assignment, like loving God and loving others as we love ourselves.

[29:38] “I came to realize that the goal was not necessarily money, or status, or titles, but everyday to seek the assignment in His kingdom and then do all that we can to fulfill it.” - Click Here to Tweet This [34:15] Three Steps to Realizing Your Purpose
    • I was inspired by Matthew 7:7-8.
    • Scripture reads: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
    • There are three words in this passage that made an impact on me, which are: ask, seek, and knock.
    • We’ll use these as daily guides to know your specific purpose or assignment.

[36:20] Step One: Ask and You Will Find
    • You have to start asking questions and looking for clues.
    • Start asking questions like: "What am I good at?", "What gives me joy and energy?" or "What is something I can speak about with no preparation?"
    • Ask everyone: God, family, friends, advisors, or coaches. You might find the answer.
    • Listen and reflect because their answers might reveal your purpose in life.

[41:36] Step Two: Seek and You Will Find
    • You should spend some time with your Creator to know His plans for you.
    • There are practices you can try to know your purpose and grow in your spirituality.
    • Eliminate distractions like devices and noises—anything that affects your spiritual growth.
    • Be still and give yourself peace in silence.
    • I’ve mentioned more of these practices in this episode, so tune in to the full episode to know more about them.

[45:51] Step Three: Knock and It Will Be Opened to You
    • It’s not enough that you’re doing well with the first two; you should start knocking, getting out, and doing something.
    • If you just sit by and do nothing, then you’ll get nowhere.
    • You have to move and take action whether you know or not what your purpose is.
    • Reflect on what you’re doing. If doors you knock on don’t open for you, you should look somewhere else.

[49:37] “I would encourage you to get to where you need to be. That it may be as simple as ask, seek, and knock, so that it can be given, you can find, and it can be opened unto you.” - Click Here to Tweet This [49:44] Concluding Words
    • Repeat the steps. Continue to ask, seek, and knock daily.
    • Our mission in life is to determine what our purpose or assignment is.
    • I encourage you to keep moving forward despite life’s disappointments.
    • There are lots of discouraging things in the world, but always remember you are created for something.

    • Inspiration enables us to do amazing things in life.
    • We create meaning when we tap into our inspiration, and it leads us to our happiest point.
    • Actions must coexist with inspiration for our goals to come to fruition.

[03:21] “I just have a real deep belief that each one of us has this power inside of us, that we connect with that source, God if you will, inside of us. And when we do that, that whole inspiration is what really is, for me, the building blocks of what enables us to do amazing things in life.” - Click Here to Tweet This[04:11] Definition of “Empower”
    • One of the greatest reasons for unhappiness and discord is the lack of empowerment.
    • Empowerment does not entail abuse of power. It does not mean having power over someone.
    • Rather, empowerment means having strength inside ourselves.

[08:13] Different Lessons Learned in Martial Arts

    • He realized how he needed to rely on something greater than himself to get through all of these.

[30:15] “Because I think sometimes, as you said, we only think of the high points, or people hear the high points. And that was petrifying to me. But now coming out of that, it’s one of the best things that ever happened, because I realized how I needed to rely on something bigger than myself to get through that.” - Click Here to Tweet This[31:43] Understanding Your Inner Champion for a Happy Life
    • To access one’s inner champion, you must borrow strength from something bigger than yourself.
    • We only remember to lean on this greater being when we are at our lowest. When we are not suffering, we forget about it.
    • This greater force can be used as a template for dealing with problems and to lead a happy life.

[36:20] “I realized that when we’re in those places, when they’re in those places of challenge, it’s about getting really present where we are right now, and is looking to do the next right thing, and the next right thing. Because when we get to, when I get too far ahead of myself, that’s when I get into worry and fear.” - Click Here to Tweet This [44:52] Black Belt Leadership

    About Cody

Cody Byrns is an internationally recognized speaker and bestselling author. After a near-death experience and years of surgeries and rehabilitation, he chose not to dwell on his scars or feel bitter and defeated. Instead, he uses his story to uplift and inspire others.

With the goal of helping people live free from the bonds of their scars, he shares relevant, applicable, and thought-provoking messages. He is also the founder of the Cody Byrns Foundation for Burn Survivors.

You may connect with him through his website or send an email to [email protected]. You can also reach him through Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter.

    Episode Highlights[02:24] The Life-Changing Incident
    • On May 31, 2013, a truck running a red light hit Cody.
    • His vehicle blew up in flames and got pushed through the intersection into an embankment.
    • When the fire department arrived, they thought he was dead until they saw his hand move.
    • Cody sustained severe burns. He woke up from a coma three weeks later.

[10:03] “I’m a big believer that our time here on earth is a process. It’s not an event; it might be a series of events that sort of define us. But it’s a process.” - Click Here to Tweet This[11:08] Cody’s Reaction
    • According to Cody, it’s a natural human tendency to want to control things and their outcomes.
    • He remembers very little, but what stuck to his memory were his mom and her prayers for him.
    • He was thankful to be alive, but he sometimes asked what he did to deserve such a situation.
    • He eventually came to understand that his vision was to always bring hope and God’s message to people.

[14:04] “I’m just thinking to myself how so often in life we all need those people, when life takes a hit, to remind us to keep our focus on the vision and what is most important.” - Click Here to Tweet This[16:52] How to Remain Faithful: The Importance of a Spiritual Relationship
    • When your world is rocked, your faith is put to the test. How can you remain faithful to God?
    • Your spiritual life is no longer just going to worship service.
    • In the face of devastating or discouraging news, you simply have to pray genuinely.

    [18:34] Why These Things Happen
    • Cody never got mad at God, but he did get frustrated and wondered why his accident had to happen.
    • Everyone has their moments, but God knows our heart, and He will wrap us in His warm embrace.
    • Cody doesn’t believe God was punishing him, quoting Jan Crouch who said, “God did not do this to you. But He allowed it to happen because He could trust you with the scars.”
    • God gave humans the right to make decisions. The driver who hit Cody was operating on his own free will, and it just so happened that he was not paying attention.

    [26:26] Explaining the Unexplainable
    • It's a natural human desire to want to know the answers to everything.
    • Cody thinks there’s still going to be so much that we’ll never fully understand.
    • That is why in the end, we all need to have a relationship with God.
    • We can try to do things without Him, but it would be a lonely life.
    • All we have to do is trust that God knows what’s right, and that someday everything will be brought to light.

[31:57] Benefits of the Situation Cody Went Through
    • The first benefit is personal growth.
    • Cody felt that he grew deeper in his walk with God, and he discovered the truly important things in life.
    • Pain let Cody grow in maturity in ways he wouldn’t have if he had not gone through such an experience.
    • It allowed him to refocus and go back to the core questions: Why am I here on this earth? Who do I want to be? What do I believe God is calling me to do?

    [35:25] On Freedom
    • We all want freedom, but it requires effort to get to that place.
    • In our walk with Christ, it’s understanding that through Jesus and what He did for us, we can have freedom from sin.
    • There’s also freedom from knowing you don’t need to be liked by people, because you realize their opinions don’t matter.
    • The biggest freedom for Cody was embracing the fact that he has this story, and God has a purpose for his time on earth.
    • No matter what goes on in the world, he has inner peace knowing that through Jesus Christ, he can do anything.

    [39:11] The Physical Journey
    • Cody sported second, third, and fourth degree burns from the accident, and 40% of his body was severely burned.
    • Many people tend to hide their scars in today’s world, and they can do it extremely well.
    • One of the most emotional and traumatic moments in his journey was seeing the damage done to his body after the incident.
    • The biggest challenge about scars is learning how to embrace them.

    [44:07] The Book Journey
    • The title of his book came to him when he was going in and out of therapy. A scar release procedure does not remove the scar itself; it only allows for mobility.
    • He connected this to the emotional and thought about how people have gotten scars throughout their lives.
    • When those scars are not properly dealt with, our movements and functions become limited. The way to free ourselves is to get to the root of the issue.
    • We usually want to run from things that cause pain and fear. But the quicker you address the issue, the better off you’ll find yourself.
    • His book is not about his story, it’s about the message that is being delivered to help you where you are at in your life.

[48:10] “Fear is the one thing that gets smaller as you run towards it.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:08] Cody’s Message
    • Cody believes there is something greater for us in the future.
    • You only have one life, and it’s your choice on how you want to live it.
    • As for the process, God will direct you. But a lot of it comes from us being obedient, trusting Him, and taking actionable steps to get there.
    • The best thing you can do is surrender your life to Jesus Christ, put your hope and trust in Him, and allow Him to heal you to restore you and get you to where you need to be.

[55:21] “No matter what has happened yesterday, understand that there can be a better tomorrow. It’s all a matter of what you do today. That’s what makes the difference. And how do you truly want to live your life? What is the example that you’re wanting to set?” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    1. Learn the secrets to success of the Henderson and Perdue family businesses.
    2. Discover what you need to do to establish a legacy.
    3. Gain insights into becoming a better leader.

    About Mitzi

Mitzi Perdue is a businesswoman, writer, broadcaster, communicator, and speaker. There might be no one more apt to speak on family legacies than her, as she combines the experience of two well-established family enterprises. Her family owns the Sheraton hotel chain, which her late father started. Her late husband is the poultry icon Frank Perdue, who was the CEO of Perdue Farms. She is a businesswoman in her own right, starting a family wine grape business that grew to be one of the larger suppliers of wine grapes in California.

Mitzi is involved in combating human trafficking. She is the founder and president of the Win This Fight organization, which aims to stop human trafficking by spreading awareness and raising  funds for similar anti-trafficking organizations.

Episode Highlights[04:33] The Henderson Family’s Story
    • Mitzi’s late father and uncles founded the Sheraton hotels back in the 1930s.
    • Similar to the present situation, during the Great Depression people weren’t going to hotels like they used to.
    • To succeed, her father had to find ways to make their hotels financially stable.
    • He was so successful that at the end of his life he had 400 hotels to his name.

[06:22] Her Father’s Secrets to Success
    • Success doesn’t depend on the leader alone. The people who work there at every level are just as important.
    • Be the kind of leader that people want to follow.
    • The first thing her father did when he bought a hotel was to invite all the employees. He told them they weren’t losing their jobs. After all, they knew their job better than anyone else.
    • The first places he would spruce up were not public places, but employee spaces. It was important to him for them to know how much he needed them.
    • One vital secret of successful family businesses is they inspire people. Intimidation and bribery won’t get them to do what you want.

[10:48] “A leader’s job is to give people a better vision of themselves.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:45] The Perdue Family
    • The Perdue family also goes to enormous lengths to make the people who work with them feel essential.
    • Frank and Mitzi would treat their employees like their own. They would invite them to their house and entertain them.  Frank himself would wait on them.
    • When they attended funerals, the employee’s family would say that being invited to their home was one of the most meaningful and moving events in their loved one’s life.

[28:21] Family Businesses: Establishing a Legacy
    • It’s never too early and it’s never too late to establish a legacy.
    • Know your core values.
    • They wrote an ethical will, ten things to do if you want a happy life, to show what they believed would make people happy.
    • Mitzi is also a big believer in family newsletters. They let you know more about your family and they give you a roadmap of how you do things.
    • Instill a family culture.

[43:44] “I think that family should almost put as much effort into being close and supporting each other as anybody else because to my mind, the most important thing at the end of your days, when you look back on your life, I don’t think you’re gonna think how much money I made. I think you’re gonna think, ‘oh, my children loved me, they turned out well.’ That’s what’s really important.” - Click Here to Tweet This[44:57] How to Keep Your Family Straight
    • Despite being an industry captain, Mitzi’s father always made time for them. Every Sunday, they had a “family hour” after church services.
    • He taught them about things they might need in the future, like investing in stocks and bonds.
    • Being sent to a public school was one of the best things her family did for her. She got to immerse herself with people from all walks of life.
    • Family philanthropy and family reunions were the glue that kept the Hendersons together.

[54:06] On Handling Conflict and Black Sheep of the Family
    • Mitzi’s theory is that every family has a black sheep since people establish their identity by being different from others.
    • Tolerance should be infinite.
    • She recommends giving the maximum restraint, acceptance, and appreciation that you can.
    • They have one rule: focus on what unites them, and celebrate those things.
    • Arguments are a waste of time. They won’t change anybody’s feelings or opinions.

[57:06] “I think there’s a deep understanding that an argument isn’t going to change anybody’s feelings or opinions. If it’s a deeply held identity thing, you are wasting your breath trying to talk somebody out of it. So whether it’s sexual orientation or whatever, accept and embrace and just stop focusing on things that divide you.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?
