    Episode Highlights[02:58] What Jennifer Does
    • Jennifer helps leaders make sense of the chaos and complexity of our culture. She prepares these people for whatever may happen in the future.
    • With the pandemic, change is happening more rapidly than ever. Everyone is impacted, and we respond differently.
    • Other generations have also experienced challenging periods.
    • What’s different now is that information is getting to us faster because of technology. We’re also more likely to be living alone and not going to church.

[09:32] Examples of Good Leadership Today
    • It’s difficult to find a role model for good leadership today. However, Jennifer believes that there are still good leaders out there.
    • Leadership is a journey.
    • And so, Jennifer learns from other leaders and improves herself over time.
    • Look at the people around the leader as well. You can learn more by seeing the people they surround themselves with.

[10:23] “Leadership is a journey. None of us have arrived.” - Click Here to Tweet This[12:53] Defining Leadership
    • Jennifer defines leadership more in the corporate sense, where their number one job is to develop people.
    • A leader sets the stage, helps define where we are headed, and connects individuals to their part in the big picture.
    • There are different levels of leadership in organizations that further define what their role is and what they need to do.

[13:12] “A leader is one that develops other people. A leader is one that sets the stage, helps define where we're headed, and connect individuals to that to say, ‘What's my part in all of this?’” - Click Here to Tweet This[16:34] How Our Systems Prepare Us for Leadership
    • Leadership is rarely taught in schools and organizations.
    • It’s easier to teach functional expertise to people.
    • What’s difficult is teaching good leadership.
    • To be effective, leaders need to communicate, set standards on performance, and look at the future.
    • These are learned through life experiences.

[21:11] Jennifer as a Young Leader
    • When she was younger, Jennifer was always seeking challenges. Even if she knew she wasn’t the best, she still always went for it.
    • More importantly, she put herself out there and was willing to fail.
    • People aren’t necessarily born leaders. Good leadership is a mix of both born and learned components.
    • To have good leadership, you have to be motivated and have skills and intellect.
    • It’s okay not to want a leadership position. Companies should define another path apart from leadership, such as the expert path, which is being an expert at one’s craft.

[28:50] Advice and Tips for Future Leaders
    • First, good leadership is about self-awareness. Get as much awareness about yourself, like what your strengths are and what you enjoy doing. Ask others for objective information about you.
    • Don’t be intimidated by leadership. Have relationships with those who are above you so you can learn from them.
    • Jennifer recommends creating a development plan detailing what you need to move on to the next level.
    • Lastly, sign up for whatever is happening around you. Going outside of your job description will set you apart.

[34:43] Why We Don’t Have More Female Leaders
    • Some companies only go for white male leaders because they feel comfortable with them and their proven successes.
    • People in business have become aware of the importance of diversity. It shows that diversity yields better results.
    • Women tend to be the primary caretakers of the house. They also make less because of systemic problems of pay.
    • And so, aside from awareness, we need to change the systemic things in our culture.
    • Jennifer found that what works is imparting diversity in every part of your business. These efforts are going to take time and patience.

[42:48] “More women in particular are on boards now than ever. And that was due to a lot of effort and a lot of education. So we've got to continue all of that. That's why it's gonna take time, though. And we're gonna have to have a little bit of patience.” - Click Here to Tweet This[44:47] Jennifer on Writing Her Book
    • Jennifer decided on the title “Leaders Deserve Better” because she wanted to show that we can, and we must change the way we’re doing things.
    • She wanted to write about good leadership differently for it to sink into people’s minds.
    • Most books are about how to be a good leader, but she wanted to get at the problem she saw: leadership teams overall are not being held accountable.
    • Jennifer believes that there are ideas on leadership that should be revisited over and over. This is the reason why she wrote the book.

[47:23] “Companies overall, leadership teams overall, are not being held accountable. And they are the solution and the problem.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [51:35] A Good Leadership Mindset
    • As a leader, your mindset should be to develop your people and get results.
    • It’s also important to figure out what work you value. What’s important to you is where you put your time and effort.
    • You have to be accountable for your mindset.
    • Instead of saying that it’s HR’s job, partner with HR and be responsible for getting your people where they need to be.
    • If you have a fixed mindset, you won’t be able to have good leadership in the organization you’re in.

[51:36] “The mindset is the only way that the information coming in is going to be used in a lot of ways. If you have the mindset of what I mentioned earlier, which is, ‘As a leader, my number one job is to develop my people.’ And get the results, of course, but develop my people, right? And so when it comes to that, the mindset shift is, ‘That is my main job, A. B, I need to free up my time to spend on that.’” - Click Here to Tweet This[56:17] Good Leadership as a Process
    • It’s not about what you’re teaching or what they’re learning. It’s about the culture and the company and how they handle it.
    • The first thing to do is to connect the strategy of the business to the people strategy.
    • Leaders have to lead and be fully responsible by having development conversations and providing resources and opportunities for people to learn.
    • Reinforce what you learn. Learning is best when you’re with people of the same level, so you can be vulnerable and share your experiences.
    • There should also be face-to-face learning and follow-up.

    [01:01:43] The Importance of Coaching
    • If you coach your team members to get better results, such will be the case.
    • Coaching is about giving your team members a method, such as the grow model.
    • Teach that skill, reinforce it, talk about its importance, and ask your people how you did.
    • By being vulnerable and asking for your team’s opinion, you can improve.

    [01:05:12] The Importance of a Leader’s Involvement
    • Leaders have to proactively work with HR or a consultant to get the right solution.
    • Jennifer’s team only works with companies that have their leaders involved in the process.
    • You can only make a big impact when your leaders recognize the importance of the process and are actively involved in it.

[01:08:00] Words of Encouragement From Jennifer
    • Being a leader right now is difficult, but keep at it. It will get better; it will get easier.
    • Feel like you can share how you’re feeling with whomever you are comfortable with.
    • Start with some joy—it can go a long way.
    • Thinking about the big picture will keep you going whenever things get tough.
    • Currently, things may seem hard, but you can see challenges as an opportunity to do things differently.

    About Dan

Dan Duckworth is a leader, teacher, coach, and above all, a change maker. He is the founder of The Crucible Life, an online community of changemakers mastering the hidden forces of leadership, organization, and change. He aims to make deep change accessible to the masses through this initiative.

If you'd like to reach out to Dan and learn more about the Crucible Life, you can contact him through his LinkedIn or find out more on The Crucible Life’s website.

    Episode Highlights[03:40] About Dan Duckworth
    • Dan was a former CEO, teacher, and coach.
    • While he still teaches, he now considers himself to be a ‘gatherer and community builder.’
    • His job is to find the right people to bring into their community.

[6:15] The Story Behind Living in an RV
    • Dan’s family got this calling to sell their house. So they did.
    • However, they were unable to move into a new house. That's why they bought an RV.
    • His wife said: “If we live in a trailer, we are travelling the country.”
    • Tune in to the full episode to hear the journey of Dan’s family across America, China, and Taiwan in an RV!

[10:24] The Struggles and Pleasures of Living in an RV
    • Every day was intense and stressful, but Dan and his family were grateful for it.
    • They felt that their life had become stale. Living in an RV was the adventure that they craved.
    • They essentially volunteered to struggle. According to Dan, a time of struggle is an opportunity for growth.
    • The greatest part of the experience was doing it as a family.

[14:29] “There is no growth without struggle. And so if you spend your whole life trying to create comfort… there's a lot of value in that. But at some point, you're actually working yourself out of the opportunity to grow." - Click Here to Tweet This [16:22] The State of Leadership Today
    • According to Dan, social problems have been part of human culture for a long time, requiring leadership to break them.
    • What Dan noticed is that there are a lot of snake oil salesmen in the leadership industry.
    • Some of these snake oil salesmen believe in their product. Others sell it knowing full well that it doesn’t work because people will buy it.
    • The messages that they sell appease people, but their message doesn't necessarily help their buyers become or change into leaders.

[25:21] What Is a Change Maker?
    • A change maker is someone who feels called to change the world.
    • Instead of complaining about something, change makers are the ones who lead the change.
    • To be a change maker, you have to be more and do more for yourself and the community.
    • Age, skills, and knowledge do not matter. What matters is the desire to lead change.

[26:24] “That is leadership, getting people to do something that they would not do without your intervention.” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:53] Inviting Yourself Into A Crisis
    • Leadership is more about character than skills and knowledge.
    • When you hit a crisis point, you can change your character. You are willing to rethink who you think you are because you have no other choice.
    • Dan says that to transform a person's character, he invites them to get into a crisis.
    • You undergo three states of mind during a crisis: focused learning, deliberate experimentation, and deep reflection.
    • Listen to the full episode to find out more about these three mindsets that help you shape your character!

    [37:44] Leadership and Character
    • Leadership and building character is more of a journey than an event.
    • Instead of looking at character as something good or bad, you can think of it as either helpful or unhelpful to your goal.
    • For example, if your goal is to become rich, but you are lazy, don't think of yourself as having a bad character. See it as laziness being unhelpful to your goal of being rich.

[42:32] The Desire to Grow and Belong
    • There is a universal fundamental desire for humans to grow and belong.
    • Leadership becomes manipulation when you try to get people to do things they do not want to do.
    • On the flip side, you can tap into people's universal desire for growth and belonging. When you do this, you help them self-actualize.
    • Listen to the full episode for details on what being a change maker means!

[46:41] How to Find Your Purpose
    • You can find your purpose by going on a hero’s journey through the three mindsets of change.
    • When you change your assumptions about who you are, you will realize that you have so much contribution to make in the world.
    • The most important thing to do to find your purpose is to do something different.
    • Try new things and see where these lead you.

[49:46] “You can't steer a parked car. The most important thing is just to do something different. …go try something, and then reflect on what happened.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:33] The Origin of The Crucible Life
    • After settling in Utah, Dan had conversations with six people who felt the call of the change maker but felt stuck.
    • Dan knew he could help them, but it was not as if he could just transfer his knowledge. Being a change maker is not a skill that can be taught.
    • That's when Dan realized he needed to develop a public voice to share the change maker journey.
    • This inspired him to create an authentic transformational community online, the Crucible Life.
    • There’s much more behind this story! Listen to the episode to hear more about how the Crucible Life came to be.

     [01:05:41] The Crucible Life
    • They named the community The Crucible Life because it is a journey. It's a choice to live on a journey of creating change for the rest of your life.
    • At the start, he thought he was meant to be a leader, a CEO, or a teacher. His epiphany made him realize that what he loves to do is transform people and gather communities.
    • No matter who it is he’s talking to, he’s always thinking about how they can create excellence together.
    • Don’t lose your desire to grow and to become; if you do, you will become miserable.

[01:12:22] “If you ever stop climbing the mountain of personal growth and achievement, you will shut down as a human being because it's part of who you are.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

Kevin founded With Love From Jesus Ministries back in 1999, which distributes essential resources to high-need populations. He founded Global Hope India in 2003 to spread the word of God to India. Outside of nonprofit organizations, Kevin has also started churches and businesses. He also speaks professionally and is the host of Living the Dream and Missions Changed My Life.

    Episode Highlights[02:19] God’s Compassion and a Grandfather’s Love
    • Kevin shares that becoming a grandfather taught him more about God’s compassion and goodness.
    • Like how we give good gifts to our children and grandchildren, God loves to give good gifts to those who ask him.
    • God is investing in today for future generations to come.

    [09:13] Kevin’s Highs and Lows
    • Kevin feels God's compassion through his family. He also feels it while he works with startups and missions in India.
    • His lowest points were when his parents got divorced and when he got fired as a pastor for working too much.
    • His hardships helped him see God’s compassion and generosity.
    • We would never choose hardships, but it is in times of hardship where we grow the most.
    • We don't have to be in a state of constant conflict, even during stressful times.

[19:52] “We live in a fallen world and there's going to be unfortunate things that every person is going to endure, we can either get bitter as a result of those bruises or we can become better. And if we let God, he will make things better.” - Click Here to Tweet This[21:01] Business and Ministry
    • People often try to separate God from business and ministry, but ministry should always be in everything you do.
    • God can be found everywhere, even in business conferences.
    • Regardless of your work, some things remain the same. It’s important to know your finances, value your people, and know your core values.

[23:49] “God would say take down the walls, ‘don't put me in a box of business or a box of ministry, but have ministry when you are in business.’” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:52] The Vision of an Entrepreneur
    • As an entrepreneur, it's critical that you see what others haven't seen yet. Vision will help guide you and your decisions.
    • Even the Bible says that people without vision will perish.
    • Build your strategy around your vision.

    [31:30] Global Hope India
    • Kevin shares how God led him to pursue missions in India.
    • It’s only because of this that he learned to pursue the presence of God in his life.
    • India represents a third of all people in the world unreached by the gospel of God. But this is slowly changing.
    • India is, unfortunately, one of the poorest countries, and its government is not able to help all its citizens.
    • The pandemic has affected India more than others, and we need to do something about it. Learn more in the full episode!

    [50:35] The Truth About Generosity
    • God has given us the spirit of love and power, not fear. He always wants to be present in our lives.
    • We often associate generosity with giving and money. But remember that God is the Giver.
    • Give only what God allows us to give. Do not look at giving as an expectation from God.
    • Look at giving as a way to channel God’s compassion and love.

[51:47] “God really showed me in His Word that he's not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.” - Click Here to Tweet This[57:29] No Margin for Generosity
    • Realize that God's compassion and generosity are limitless. He has so much more capacity than we credit Him for.
    • Allow God to use you as a way to give and share blessings to others.

    [01:02:48] Kevin’s Message
    • Know that God loves you no matter who you are.
    • The world needs God more than ever. Look for Him as He uses you to create more goodness in the world.

    • Writing a 70,000-word document is a very different experience from being a speaker and coach.

    • Tim got the inspiration for the book even before the idea of starting the podcast.

Episode Highlights[04:03] Why We Need to Talk About Simplification
    • Today, the world has become more complicated and open. It is going in more directions than ever before.
    • Emily likes to simplify things by looking at and subtracting the number of things we’re doing so we can give our full attention to the things that matter the most.
    • You have to declutter first so that you can simplify what you have left.

[04:27] “I like to talk about simplifying things in terms of let's look at the mass of what we're involved in and what we're doing. And let's talk about what we can subtract so that we can give our whole hearts and our whole attention to the things that matter most. A lot of times people will talk about, like, let's simplify the big pile. But you've got to do the work to declutter first so that you can simplify what you have left.” - Click Here to Tweet This[06:54] Make Life Easy Through Simplification
    • Emily’s mom taught her how to value simplicity and take something complicated or messy and make it more orderly and peaceful.
    • Growing up, it was something she enjoyed doing.
    • She decided to make this quirk about herself into a business, creating the Simplified planner.
    • The business also stemmed from her desire to make life easy.

[09:07] People Who Thrive in Disorder
    • Even if you’re not Type-A, rhythm and routine are still important.
    • They’re natural parts of life.
    • These make us better and allow us to thrive; they make life easy.
    • Simplification serves everyone as a whole, even if you’re implementing it in different ways.

    [11:37] Grace, Not Perfection
    • Emily embraced this phrase in her life when her kids were born. She felt like she was the only one struggling and that every other woman she knew was not.
    • She had such a deep desire to be excellent and be able to organize and control everything.
    • You can find a lot of joy in the messiness of life if you allow it to be enough.
    • Allow yourself to find joy, peace, and satisfaction in the journey.

[12:23] “There is a lot of beauty and joy to be found in the messiness of life, if we allow it to be enough...perfectionism can be far outweighed by allowing yourself to find the joy in kind of the journey along the way.” - Click Here to Tweet This[12:37] On Perfectionism and Control
    • Emily admits that she’s a person who loves to be in control of everything.
    • She learned that there are things in life that we can’t control.
    • When Emily was pregnant with her first son, the doctors told her that he would have many issues.
    • She was terrified during this time, but she also learned to let go and be comfortable with the unknown.
    • Later on, Emily’s son was born without issues.

[17:31] On the Challenges Caused by Social Media
    • It’s all about perspective. Social media has allowed many opportunities to happen for us.
    • On the other hand, we may feel pressured to think that we’re not doing enough and being enough.
    • But we have to realize that social media is a highlight reel. No one posts their mistakes online.
    • Be proactive with your social media use rather than simply being reactive.
    • Follow people who build you, make you feel good, and inspire you.

[20:32] The Biggest Challenge People Face Today
    • According to Emily, people crave balance.
    • We all crave some sort of peace, where we feel like things are not at odds with each other.
    • Having balance in your life is like riding a bike.
    • You should not go too hard for too long in any one direction, or else you are going to fall.

[22:00] “If we're not balancing the season of relentlessly hard work with relentlessly pursuing rest and nourishment and the filling of ourselves that we have to do, then we will faceplant… what if we got really proactive, like we said about the way that we're managing things, the way that we're managing life, and making sure that we're filling up and not just pouring out?” - Click Here to Tweet This[24:00] Lessons from Emily’s Business
    • Emily has been in the business for 13 years. In 2017, her team decided to close the wholesale side of her business and lose 40% of revenue to focus on connecting with retail store owners.
    • By doing that, they were able to double their revenue the next year.
    • If you take the risk and simplify things like Emily, you make space for growth and fulfillment of your mission.
    • What Emily would do differently is that she wouldn’t burn herself out once every three years.
    • Listen to the full episode to know how Emily’s business has grown from selling office products to growing a community.

[29:18] The Role Emily’s Faith Has Played
    • Emily was not raised in church. She felt this was a weakness for a long time.
    • But what she has learned is that she speaks to her faith with almost a childlike faith.
    • It is important to her to make everyone understand that they have a seat at the table no matter who they are or what they believe in.
    • Emily admits that she had to become more confident in speaking about her faith.
    • This journey invites more people to be a part of what she’s been doing.

[32:02] On Starting a Podcast and Releasing Growing Boldly
    • In January 2021, Emily was able to free up some time to start a podcast after years of people encouraging her to do so. She shares that she enjoys doing something new.
    • The release of Emily’s latest book was delayed nine times because of COVID. It came out on March 23.
    • She turned in the final manuscript in February 2020.
    • Emily wrote the book with the intention of it applying to anyone in whatever stage of life they’re at.
    • She shares stories of people who went through challenges and thrived.

    [36:40] The Importance of Build
    • Emily wanted her book to focus on forward momentum and moving on, not on being still. Now is the time to move your feet.
    • The word build is really important to Emily. She always goes back to this word when choosing a word of the year.
    • To her, building means you have a vision, and you put in the work for what you want to happen.

[37:14] “To me, building means that you have a goal in mind, you have a vision for where you're headed, and you're putting the pieces, the big ones and small ones in place to make it happen.” - Click Here to Tweet This[38:02] Writing the Book
    • Emily had to step away from social media as she was writing her new book.
    • As she was writing, she realized that she had done some bold things in her life.
    • However,  she feels like she’s currently playing it safe.
    • Growing boldly is also about growing as a human. Be bold in your decisions and words so that you are your most authentic self.
    • Emily dedicates her new book towards her hopes and dreams for her middle child, Tyler.

[39:20] “Growing boldly doesn't just mean building a great business, or a great marriage, or great ministry. It's also about growing as a human and being bold in your decisions and your choices and your words, so that you are your most authentic self.” - Click Here to Tweet This[43:02] Three Steps to Organization
    • In short, the process is: simplify, plan, execute.
    • When you have something complicated, the first thing you do is to get rid of the excess. This process is called the ruthless declutter.
    • Pull out anything that is not the best, the favorite, or necessary. These things will have to find a new home. You then spend less time rummaging to find something.
    • After you simplify, add some structure, and then you can now use whatever the thing you’re organizing is.

Episode Highlights[04:04] Our Best Days Are Ahead of Us
    • We have to realize that the little things that get in our way should not define us for longer than a day.
    • We tend to identify ourselves with these small, inevitable, but temporary mistakes.
    • Challenges in life, no matter how bad, will pass.
    • What keeps us from living our best days is how we view ourselves and our perspective in life.
    • Almost every problem we have is surmountable. It’s a matter of seeking those people who have addressed these seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

[07:19] Will and Should Everyone Face Challenges in Life?
    • Ease is a greater threat to progress than hardship.
    • When people come through the other side of adversity, they become better because of it.
    • To raise the next generation better, we have to let them fall and experience rejection and pain.
    • Don’t play the victim. Instead, develop a self-sufficient mindset.
    • Experiencing challenges in life is inescapable.

[08:12] “Other challenges choose you. And I think that we have to embrace them because that is really the only way we grow when we do things that seem at first glance insurmountable.” - Click Here to Tweet This[14:17] A Culture of Ease
    • Our society is too focused on making things comfortable and making everything easier.
    • If you take the easiest opportunities, you will be held back compared to those who take the hard road.
    • Life is never fair, but the challenges it presents us should be embraced.
    • Christopher recalls the story of his brother, who serves in the military. Listen to the full episode to learn about it!

[18:19] Facing Adversity in the Business World
    • You can always find a way to overcome whatever hardship is in front of you.
    • If you want to overcome a challenge, help the person next to you.
    • It’s amazing to witness people who are having personal struggles set that aside just to empathize and help other people out.
    • Startups are difficult because they can’t afford one person being absent and not pulling their weight.
    • Business is a game of minimizing mistakes. We have to deal with the challenges of today first and hope that tomorrow will be a better day.

[19:32] “My point is that you can always find a way to overcome whatever hardship is in front of you. And one of the greatest lessons that I always say is that you want to overcome your personal hardship, whoever is against you. Help the person next to you. There's something magical when you do that because it almost validates you.” - Click Here to Tweet This[23:44] Experiences of Organizations in the Pandemic
    • Christopher believes that you have to bet on your people.
    • The government didn’t understand how to write nor run a policy on dealing with adversity.
    • Transparency is key so that people can figure out what they should do on their own.
    • Christopher compares the pandemic response in the country versus that in the city. Listen to the full episode to learn about it!

    [27:17] Victors vs. Victims
    • If you see the potential of humans, you should give them just enough support so that they can do the job themselves.
    • An overabundance of support will crush the spirit of people and prevents them from performing on their own.
    • You can do anything if you put your mind to it.
    • We were on the victor side in the past, but we are moving towards a victim side in the future, which is dangerous for the next generation.

[27:19] “The way we look at it is defined by whether you see the potential in humans or you don't, yes, it's that simple. It is that simple. And, your listeners might debate this, but if you believe in the true potential of humans, you will let them run unfettered. And you will give them just the amount of support that's needed. And not overburden them with too much support where you crush their spirit.” - Click Here to Tweet This[31:20] Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset
    • Those with a growth mindset celebrate the success of others instead of envying it.
    • Our society nowadays has more people with a fixed than a growth mindset, so we are increasingly becoming victims.

    [33:46] Christopher’s Tragic Childhood Experience
    • Christopher’s father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. It was determined that he only had eight months left to live.
    • An hour after Christopher came home from his first football game, his father passed away.
    • Christopher shares that he’s thankful for the people who helped his family during this period.
    • Listen to the full episode or read Christopher’s book for the whole story.

[38:33] Witnessing the Passing of a Person
    • At the time, Christopher felt that he was too immature to handle the situation.
    • His mother told him that his father would not make it, and it puzzled him at the time.
    • It’s later that Christopher realized that she was preparing him for his eventual passing.
    • Christopher knew that after the last rites, his father was in heaven, and the suffering is now over.

[41:59] Losing a Parent at a Certain Age
    • As a teenager, Christopher was in a stage where he was becoming a man and making plans for a future where his parents were there with him.
    • Losing a parent is hard, no matter what age.
    • Having experienced the loss of a parent, Christopher and his brother learned that challenges in life are surmountable.

[46:09] Faith in God in the Face of Adversity
    • We may question why God would put us through these types of tragedies.
    • But it’s not your place to judge this. Know that it’s part of God’s plan.
    • When his father passed, Christopher was not a fan of God and felt very angry at Him.
    • He distanced himself from the Church for a while. Later, he got pulled back in.
    • He thanks God for guiding him throughout the time and giving him the foresight to overcome adversity.

[58:42] Is There a Formula for Adversity?
    • Overcoming challenges is always a longer process than it first seems.
    • Christopher admits that the book isn’t one-size-fits-all.
    • Taking even just one piece of advice from the eight steps is a giant leap towards progress.

[01:01:17] Gaining Momentum to Overcome Adversity
    • It’s important to establish a routine.
    • Having a schedule is great for reinforcing good habits and ensuring that you aren’t idle.

[01:04:09] Your Best Days Are Ahead of You
    • The feedback Chris got from his book suggests that people’s lives have been impacted by it.
    • Christopher reflects that in applying the eight steps, he’s become better than what he was before.
    • The phrase “Your best days are ahead of you” is from the mother of Christopher. Even with dementia at age 83, she still continues to say this.

    [01:06:57] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • Christopher resonates with ‘go’ the most.
    • Go equals action.
    • You have to apply and take action.

    • Richard shares how important it is for journalists like him to get everything right in their news.

[15:50] Do We Have Plenty of Data Available to Us?
    • Richard says that we have too much data available to us, and it’s important for us to know how to properly manage these data.
    • He says that as people living in a society, we are trying to handle all of that data and not fail to get overwhelmed by this data.

[16:37] “And I think we're in that arc of being data millionaires, and data billionaires. And we just need to learn how to grow into it, and manage it.” - Click Here to Tweet This[18:43] Facts vs. Opinions
    • Richard mentions that distinguishing facts from opinions in the media is one of the greatest questions for the past ten years.
    • News has been integral in strongly uniting a country. News allows people to engage in healthy discourse and build their democracy as a nation.
    • Richard believes that the lack of local news outlets is one reason why people have trouble identifying what is true and what is not.
    • He says that we should spend more time analyzing what kind of sources we trust.

    [27:00] Understanding Richard’s Heritage
    • He rejected the truth of his heritage early on in his life. Richard didn’t want to be seen as an Asian, and he wanted to be an American.
    • Later on in his life, he found out that his grandparents were illegal immigrants.
    • 20 years later, while covering news about illegal immigrants in the country, he realized that he has the same situation as the immigrant children.
    • He realized that when he rejected his heritage, he’s also rejecting his grandfather, who only wanted to live a better life and give his family a better chance at living in this country.

[32:37] “And so I was ashamed just to talk about that one issue that was not rejecting those new immigrants—those new Americans—I was rejecting my grandfather. And that was the most frustrating for me, because I was saying, “Hey, you, you're no good. I'm better than you.” And I was really pointing instead to my grandfather. How dare I?” - Click Here to Tweet This[35:00] How Our Identity Is Related to Selfishness and Selflessness
    • That experience made Richard look inwards and question his ways.
    • His experience empowered him to think more critically.
    • It took him about 20 years to finally understand his own identity.

[39:29] The 80’s and Selfishness vs. Selflessness
    • Richard believes that past generations wanted to make everything simpler, easier, and better for their family.
    • Materialism suddenly boomed in the 80s because of people’s access to material goods.
    • However, Richard believes that the fruits we are bearing now cannot be traced to a single generation alone.
    • He agrees that the 80s have a lot of influence on how we look at things in our life now.

    [45:44] Catalytic Events Richard Experienced
    • When he was young, Richard believed that, as a pastor’s son, he had a great mission to save everybody.
    • He realized that people are not perfect. This realization made a huge impact on his goal on his faith and spirituality.
    • Another catalytic event that he experienced is when he was able to work at Mrs. Fields for four or five years. This experience gave him his business background.
    • These two experiences were definitive in Richard’s identity and on how he now views the world.

    [50:06] Faith and Media
    • Richard shares that there are people he met in the last 15 years in journalism that are devout and people of faith.
    • Only recently did Ricard begin to openly share his faith.
    • He believes that anyone in any profession can be a person of faith.

[50:06] Richard on His Book, Enough About Me
    • The book is about vulnerability as Richard lays out all of his experiences for the readers to relate to.
    • The topic of caregiving was discussed thoroughly with the agents when they were brainstorming for the contents of the book.
    • They realized that the core value of being a caregiver to others is the value of thinking about others or the Golden Rule.
    • This value acts as an antidote to this selfish pandemic.

[57:19] “It is that core value of thinking of others, the golden rule, that which has been written a hundred different ways in the holy texts of the Christian faith and any other faith you can find. And that binding idea, we need a binding idea today. And we need something that doesn't say this is better than that. We need something that says that's an antidote to the selfish pandemic.” - Click Here to Tweet This[59:02] The Pandemic’s Influences on Richard’s Book
    • The term he coined as ‘selfish pandemic’ points to the selfishness of people who never thought about the health of others.
    • He shares stories of amazing people who helped people survive the pandemic—the people who acted on selflessness.

[59:51] “So there's the racial pandemic, there's the viral pandemic, where we've seen, unfortunately, people acting in selfish ways, not thinking of the health of others. And then we have the very storylines that I've had to deal with that led me to say, in addition, how easy it is for us to hate on somebody to move to violence... And so that's why all that together is where we went with this book, and what we try to share.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:02:21] Takeaway in Reading Richard’s Book
    • He wants his readers to realize that selflessness is a step a person must take every day.
    • He relates this to the fantastic healthcare workers who despite being worried braved through every day.

[01:03:14] “But the only way we get to that strong muscle to do heroic things like that, I believe is that little step every day. And so the book tries to be an instruction manual, not way up here all the time in the clouds, but more on the ground.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:04:12] What Richard Learned through Writing His Book
    • He realized that he is a work in progress.
    • There are still moments in his life that he catches himself being selfish.
    • He has to constantly remind himself to be selfless.

[01:07:03] Questions that Richard Wants to Receive
    • Richard says that he wants to receive questions that ask him why people are still acting selfishly even though they know they should do otherwise.
    • Richard mentions the usage of “give” and “get” words and how these affect people to be selfish or selfless.
    • Listen to the full episode to hear Richard mention studies about the benefits of living a selfless life!

  • You Are a Steward, Not an Owner: The Meaning of Leadership

What is the meaning of leadership? Sometimes, our leaders operate on an outdated definition of leadership. They create a dangerous cult of personality, and we put them on pedestals. When we mistakenly associate leadership with control, we risk looking at followers as a means to an end and money as the ultimate goal.

In this episode, Tim encourages you to rethink the meaning of leadership. Think of it in terms of stewardship. The moment we embrace this mindset, the more we can take care of the people and resources we have been given. As stewards of God, we look at people as unique individuals to serve and approach financial resources as gifts.

Listen to the full episode to find out how you can step into your role as a steward-leader.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Know the meaning of leadership as it relates to being a steward.
    2. Learn how to show love, compassion, and understanding to people.
    3. Discover and apply the storehouse principle for your financial blessings.

Episode Highlights[03:53] The Meaning of Leadership
    • When we talk about leadership, we tend to focus on the hard skills that it takes to lead and, more recently, servant leadership.
    • However, what is missing in this conversation is stewardship.
    • A leader is a steward, caretaker, and overseer. They should treat the people under their wing and the resources under their management as gifts.
    • All our material possessions and relationships are not ours. We are only caretakers and stewards of these blessings.
    • Having a steward’s mindset sets you up to become a Godly and ultimate leader.

[07:14] “A leader is a steward, or a caretaker, or an overseer of all that they had been gifted with. . . It’s people, it’s resources, it’s things, it’s possessions — all of the things that you have been blessed with. You are a steward over those things. And that, to me, is what leadership is all about. It's not ownership. It's not that you control or you have total lordship over things. You have been given a gift.”- Click Here to Tweet This[10:20] Everyone Is a Leader
    • We are all called to do great things on this earth.
    • Even if you don’t consider yourself a leader or you don’t see yourself embodying the meaning of leadership.
    • However, you’ve been entrusted with several gifts and blessings that you may be unknowingly taking care of.
    • It may also be the case that you’re being groomed to take on leadership roles in the future.

    [12:41] On Better Leaders
    • We tend to rank leaders based on their influence or visibility. But being in the limelight doesn’t automatically mean you’re an effective leader.
    • If you embrace a steward’s mindset, you can still be a good leader even if you do good deeds without anyone seeing.
    • In the Kingdom of God, the first shall be the last, and the last shall be the first.
    • A true leader has a mindset based on stewardship, not ownership.

    [15:06] The Cult of Leadership
    • Sometimes, we put leaders on pedestals more than we should. We can see this cult of personality in churches, businesses, and organizations.
    • However, there’s a fine line between honoring a person and idolizing them.
    • Often, these types of leaders who developed a cult of personality have issues with integrity since no one is holding them accountable.
    • If you’re a leader, you have to be mindful and remain focused on your mission. Get a team or a coach to keep you grounded.

    [18:28] Treating People as Gifts
    • When you become a leader, remember that your followers are not your property. You have a responsibility to serve them.
    • When leaders start to believe that they own their followers, this puts them on a dangerous path.
    • The meaning of leadership is leading with love, compassion, and understanding.
    • People are not commodities; they are unique individuals designed for greatness.
    • You are encouraged to consider all the people that come into our lives as gifts.

[22:32] “If you're not going to show love and compassion, you really don't have any part of leading people.” - Click Here to Tweet This[30:51] The Storehouse Principle
    • Money is a tool, nothing more, nothing less.
    • When we elevate money too high on a pedestal, it can mess with our heads and affect our interactions with others.
    • When we have too much or too little money, we usually learn the truth about ourselves. That’s why it’s important to understand that money is not ours; it’s just a tool.
    • According to the Storehouse Principle, we should set aside a portion of our financial seed in a “storehouse” to recognize that the abundance we currently enjoy is a gift.
    • Applying the Storehouse Principle sets you up to become a better leader because you acknowledge the money as gifts.

[35:38] “If you believe that you've been given a gift of something, of financial seed, financial resources, then you should set something aside in a storehouse to recognize that you've been given that gift.” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:40] The Leader’s Mindset
    • A leader that uses people and money to get ahead will only achieve short-term success.
    • True leaders treat their people with compassion and handle finances prudently.
    • A true leader should think that everything that comes their way — be it people or resources — is a gift and treats them accordingly.

    About Michelle

Michelle Prince is a life coach, motivational speaker, best-selling author, and self-publishing expert. Inspired and endorsed by Zig Ziglar, Michelle is passionate about helping other people share their very own stories to inspire other people. She is a Ziglar Certified speaker/trainer and Ziglar brand ambassador.

Michelle is the founder and CEO of Performance Publishing Group. This company dedicates itself to making a difference one story at a time. She is also the founder of Book Bound Workshop, where she helps people get their stories written, published, and marketed.

As a speaker, coach, and author, Michelle uses her authenticity to connect and inspire people towards personal development. She continuously motivates people to become published authors.

If you want to learn more about or from her, you can reach out to her through her website. You can also connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

Episode Highlights[06:09] Michelle’s History and Experience with Zig Ziglar
    • Zig Ziglar is one of Michelle’s greatest inspirations and mentors. He is a beacon of hope for many people, and he helps people become their best selves.
    • Michelle first met him at 18 years old in a seminar that changed her life. She then knew she wanted to work for him.
    • Michelle was a good and positive girl but with a slightly tipped-off attitude towards her parents. She didn't know anything about passion and personal development before meeting Zig Ziglar.
    •  Although she wanted a speaker job initially, she landed a sales job with Ziglar. It was all about buying books, cassette tapes, and knowing they're selling good things to people.

[13:02] Michelle's Journey to Sharing Her Story
    • Michelle never had a competitive spirit, but she was drawn to leadership positions.
    • She was working with Zig Ziglar when she went to a Women of Faith conference, looked at people speaking on stage, and was amazed. She then figured out speaking might be her gift.
    • Michelle made a lot of mistakes in the process.
    • She also doubted herself, but everyone does. Sometimes, we need doubts to humble ourselves, so not having doubts or fears can be dangerous.
    • Stopping and redirecting your path may be hard but a necessary thing to do.

[21:15] Authenticity and the Struggle of Coming Up with Your Own Story
    • You may feel the need to imitate other people’s tactics because they’re doing things better and for longer.
    • But you only need to draw inspiration from people. You can do this by finding people with a message you can resonate with and the values you can live with.
    • Authenticity doesn't mean just being vulnerable or sharing your life story. It's figuring out who you are and what you stand for.
    • There isn’t a lot of authenticity nowadays, especially online. So, people now crave it; they are attracted to those who are real and to who they can relate to.

[23:35] “Authenticity doesn't mean that you're just vulnerable, and you share every detail of your life. But it’s just figuring out who you are, what do you stand for, and putting your stake in the ground so that you will attract other people who are like you.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [31:04] Michelle's Message to Women
    • Michelle feels very blessed to be a woman. Now, women have more opportunities than they had in the 80s.
    • Be driven to figure out what you want, who you are, and what you want to do early on.
    • We are here for a reason and that's to share ourselves with other people. The sooner you can discover your purpose, the more people you can influence.
    • It's okay to have a different opinion. Just approach things with grace and speak up.
    • Be who you are and love who you are early on.

[33:05] “You don't have to be anybody other than who you are. And there should be no fear, no shame in that, and just to own it and be proud of that. But more importantly, just figure out the ‘Why you're here.’ Because especially as believers we are here for a reason; we are here for a purpose.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [36:30] The Effects of Being a People-Pleaser
    • The desire to serve and make people happy is good, but not if at the expense of yourself.
    • You may want to be liked, and so you'll adapt to the environment and lose authenticity. This is the negative part of being a people-pleaser.
    • Michelle used to be a people-pleaser, but she has since changed her perspective. She still wants to be liked, but she's become proud of who she is without changing too much about herself.
    • People-pleasing is good when you're inspiring others, but you should never do it at the expense of changing yourself. Be at peace and have faith in who you are.

    [40:37] The Power of Authority
    • You have the expertise; you just need to let people know of this expertise by writing or talking about it.
    • Use all the things you've learned and experienced to leverage yourself while helping and inspiring other people.
    • Writing a book can be the way to leave an impact.
    • Michelle has a series of questions to help people leverage their expertise, realize their impact, and share their story. Listen to the podcast for more details on this.
    • There are now new methods and platforms to share your stories, expertise, and talents. It can be through podcasts or social media.

    [47:08] Changing Your Authority Scale
    • You have something you’re good at or passionate about; you need to go out there and share it with the world.
    • Michelle's friend wrote a book about adopting a child. The next thing she knew, the biggest adoption agency has invited her to speak and has distributed her book to a large audience.

[49:54] "It's not about the book. It's not about what it makes or what it sells for. It's more like, ‘I get a phone call from someone who read my book; I don't even know them. They said my story changed their life.’ I mean, things like that happen all the time. And there's just so much power in it." - Click Here to Tweet This[52:26] On Writing and Publishing
    • When writing novels, the process is pretty much the same. But you have to have an ultimate goal and a concrete plan.
    • Michelle shares that she likes to help people find their core story or who God made them to be.
    • Hybrid and self-publishing can help you publish a book sooner. It can get you widespread acclaim and success, but it will be a more complex process.
    • Ultimately, the type of publishing route you choose will depend on what your goal is.

[52:48] "The process isn't hard. The hardest part is figuring out what your story is, and figuring out what it is that you could put into a book." - Click Here to Tweet This[01:01:33] How to Become the Author of Your Story
    • Grab a piece of paper and draw a T. On the left-hand side, list down the things you’re passionate about. On the right, list down your experiences.
    • Once you have the list, look for an intersection between the two.
    • As you learn how to become an author of your story, you will realize who you really are: a combination of passion and experiences.
    • Michelle resonates the most with the word ‘create.’ It’s not just about creating, but also knowing and trusting that The Greatest Creator built you the way that you are.

[01:03:55] "The best book for you to write is the intersection between your passions and your experiences." - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    Episode Highlights[02:46] About Amy
    • Amy is a speech coach at Distinction Communication, Inc. She provides one-on-one or small group speaker coaching.
    • In 2017, she staked 20 uplifting yard signs with hopeful messages that started the Don’t Give Up Signs movement.
    • The Don’t Give Up Signs movement has been able to help people fight addiction, leave an abusive relationship, and even keep people from physically harming themselves.

    [06:07] Signs of Hope
    • At Amy’s small group in church, they talked about the high suicide rates in her town. She felt like she needed to do something to help.
    • She printed yard signs and set them up anonymously.
    • The signs worked because they invited people to have a moment of sovereignty. People who see these signs decide that it’s for them and take hope for themselves.
    • The signs went viral during her vacation with her family. They began to produce custom products in different languages.
    • She got an email from a literary agent who encouraged her to write a book.

    [15:42] The Signs’ Messages
    • All of the yard signs had “Don’t give up” written on them.
    • The first 20 signs that were put up had two different messages, namely, “You are worthy of love” and “Your mistakes do not define you.”
    • The movement produced car decals, encouragement cards, postcards, pins, and even tattoos with these messages.
    • The messages that sell most include “You matter,” “You got this,” and “We’re all in this together.”
    • Listen to the full episode to know more about the other messages in these signs!

    [26:06] Amy’s Superpower and Kryptonite
    • Amy’s strength is loving people well.
    • She considers her ego as her kryptonite.
    • She is outward with her opinions, doesn’t mind being vulnerable, and likes speaking.

    [29:04] Speaking at Church
    • If she speaks in a spiritual setting, she has a healthy fear of God.
    • At church, she feels like she shouldn’t speak just words, but inspired words.
    • Amy tempers a bit, not because of a religious spirit, but because she does not want her opinions to get in the way of her relationship with God.
    • She believes that God is calling her to hate her sin more than other people’s.
    • God wants her to stay humble and to love other people like He loves them.

[35:26] Moments That Changed Amy’s Belief System
    • Amy was sitting on her bed watching a YouTube video about two gay men speaking at Seattle Pacific University. The two men had opposing views on whether to act on their sexual desires.
    • She realized that even if the men had different opinions, they still loved each other.
    • At 14 years old, she lost her brother. She was never angry nor had any traumas due to the incident; she believes that God gave her a miraculous ability to bear the situation.
    • She believed that experience solidified her faith and made her feel a sense of urgency in making her life count.
    • She shares that her journey to understand people and their experiences is a slow, steady evolution. She advises us to be patient when we feel like someone isn’t getting where we’re coming from.

    [46:04] On Maturity
    • Amy believes that maturity is opening everything up to God.
    • It’s allowing God to touch, influence, correct, and rebuke everything.

    [48:05] What Is Nuance?
    • Nuance is when two things seemingly conflict, and yet they are both true.
    • Amy explains that nuance is like how God can be terrifying and full of anger but at the same time, he can be tender, approachable, and merciful.
    • It’s not always black and white.

    [51:37] On Feminism
    • Amy remembers watching the women’s marches on TV, but she felt isolated and alienated because she is pro-life. Because of this, she did not want it to represent her.
    • However, due to an unlikely friendship, she came to realize that opposing things can have a middle ground.
    • Amy came to accept that she is a pro-life feminist.
    • Even pro-life legislation is nuanced. There are some parts that Amy doesn’t agree with.
    • The challenge is to find a seat at the table for someone in the middle.

    [57:35] The Power of Words
    • Amy believed that language and how we speak matter.
    • We tend to create cognitive distortions about people and what they say.
    • Amy learned to temper her language by leading with empathy and not defensiveness.
    • We see each other as humans; we understand that people are coming from different places.

    [01:04:43] Amy’s Book
    • Amy already had a manuscript of a different book about public speaking.
    • In her two years of writing, Amy learned that walking through tragedy in her life helped her see hope, what helped, and what didn’t.
    • Signs of Hope is a collection of stories of other people encountering hope; it's a book full of nuance.
    • She hopes that through her book, people feel empowered and challenged.
    • She hopes that in reading the book during a moment of desperation, there's hope that we can take off the page and find our own moments of sovereignty.

    [01:09:03] Seeking with Amy
    • Even though Amy’s instinct is to go and take action, she chooses to seek.
    • She has found that when she stops and goes slow, the journey becomes more fruitful, deep, and transformative.

5 Powerful Quotes From This Episode

[32:34] “God told me, ‘Amy, I need you to hate your sin more than anyone else's sin. And as long as you hate yours more and you don't start to categorize and measure certain sins, I need you to hate yours more and stay humbled before me. And it will allow you to love other people like I love them.’”

[42:59] “I was forced to grow up really quickly but it benefited me in that I never was under the false assumption that I have forever.”

[45:03] “Here's the slow, steady evolution of me learning, of me transforming the way I've judged people and evaluated people's experiences. But that wasn't instant; that was so slow in a huge transformation.”

[45:31] “Sometimes we need to be patient because the progress will be slow, but it will be deep and it will be real. So be patient with those in your lives that are slow to understand.”

[49:18] “There's nuance—it's not so black and white, yes or no, all in or all out, you're either for me or against me. There's nuance in the middle, and it's very uncomfortable because you have to be willing to hold both and not evaluate or try to tip the scales.”
