  • Building Immunity to the Virus of Change

We often learn the hard way that we are not in control of many things in life. But as cliché as it may sound, change is inevitable—and it applies to all aspects of our lives. It’s one of the virus types that comes at us at the most unexpected time. Sometimes, it can end up leading us to a positive situation. Other times, it’s what brings us down. That said, how can we prepare for change if we can’t anticipate the exact moment it will happen?

In this episode, Tim delves into the topic of building immunity to change. We will learn the significance of the words seek, go, create, and now in preparing for the shifts in our ways of life. This episode also marks the second anniversary of the podcast. With that, Tim finally answers which among the words in the podcast title resonates with him the most.

Episode Highlights [02:47] Becoming Immune to the Virus of Change
    • Tim always encounters these two words in the coaching world: control and change.
    • Control: Can you control and manage everything under you?
    • Change: How can you control change and keep it from coming at you?

[03:58] The Virus Types 2020 Brought
    • We’ve learned a lot about ourselves and how we deal with change over the last two years.
    • No one knew what was coming in early 2020 when COVID-19 officially became a global outbreak.
    • We constantly talk about how to prepare for changes in business and politics. But COVID-19 was one of the virus types no one saw coming.

    [05:34] Dealing with Change
    • We cannot eliminate change, but we can manage and control it.
    • We can build up our immune system to not become as prone to the challenges accompanying change.

[06:25] Acquiring and Recovering from Other Virus Types: COVID-19
    • Tim and his wife have just recovered from COVID-19 at the time of the recording.
    • They both chose not to get inoculated, as they live socially distant lives from others. But after recuperating, Tim has felt better today than he has for the past five years.
    • He acknowledges that the virus types, especially COVID-19, have impacted many people in various negative ways.

[08:44] How Tim Decided to Talk About Change
    • He was recently asked to write an article discussing change.
    • As he was writing the article, he realized it fits with the recent talk he did for a local rotary club in Atlanta.
    • For this podcast, Tim mashed up what he wrote and spoke about.

[10:33] It’s Not Possible to Avoid Change
    • We can't put ourselves in a position where we can avoid and repel change.
    • The rate of change is accelerating exponentially. With this, we need to immunize ourselves to deal with change.

[12:20] When We Shouldn’t Pursue Change
    • We must not change for the sake of change.
    • Constantly bringing new things in prevents us from getting things done and moving forward.
    • We don’t have to try hard to have change coming at us with how the world is today.
    • So, embrace change when it comes instead of pursuing or avoiding it. Otherwise, it can come back even worse.
    • To deal with change better, we must build up our systems and structures.

[13:08] “[Change] prevents us from finishing. It prevents us from moving forward in getting some things done when we're constantly bringing new things and change in.” - Click Here to Tweet This[15:00] The Roadmap to Building Up Immunity
    • The roadmap to building up immunity revolves around the words seek, go, create, and another word.
    • Tim always asks guests about which between Seek, Go, and Create resonates with them. But he has never answered the question himself.

    [16:49] Seek
    • Tim was a man of action in the past. He would never take time to pause, think, and seek wisdom, just like most of us in society today.
    • One of the most powerful ways to build up your immune system against change is to spend time seeking. Listen to the episode to hear how Tim practices seeking!
    • Tim encourages people he works with to have silent thinking time built into their calendars. He suggests finding something that allows you to seek and be still.

    [22:42] Go
    • Go is taking action from the things or instructions you’ve gotten while you were seeking.
    • Tim was previously always on the go. He learned that he needed to sit down and seek first before he goes.
    • Some people want 100% of the information before taking action, while some figure things out as they go.
    • Having a coach can help you identify how to improve your way of taking action.

[24:16] “You need know yourself. Are you a person that you're like me, “Go go go,” you need to flip that a little bit and do a little bit more of the seek first? Or are you a person that is really slow to take action? Neither one of them is good or bad.”  - Click Here to Tweet This[25:16] Go for Tim and Glori
    • Tim and Glori are “go into the world” travelers. They’ve been nomads since 2013.
    • Moving into an RV came to them during a quiet, still time when they were seeking. They weren’t sure why.
    • When the virus hit, they wondered if they were being prepared for this event.
    • One byproduct of the past years would be people moving around as it’s now possible to work from different locations.
    • But don’t move to another location unless you hear it in your seek time.

    [27:47] Create
    • Tim believes we were created in the image of our Creator, so we should also create.
    • We are creating when we are working on new ways of doing things in work and life.
    • Getting into the creation mode is similar to reaching the self-actualization stage of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
    • Change can try to knock us off as we move toward what we were created to do. To work around it, it's critical to have undergone that quiet time and be in momentum.

[31:19] Getting into a Maintenance Mode
    • Being in maintenance mode is merely dealing with the minutiae.
    • Be mindful of how much time you're spending on mundane tasks versus really creating.
    • Most maintenance things drain us and keep us from moving toward things we were assigned to do.
    • But being in creation mode gives us energy and a sense of accomplishment.

[32:34] “Once we [create], boy, there's power in that. And there's a real sense of accomplishment and self-actualization that Maslow talks about." - Click Here to Tweet This[32:42] Now
    • Seek, go, and create NOW; don’t wait.
    • Now doesn’t mean immediately hustling; it could mean pausing and having a quiet time at the moment.
    • It’s easy to say you’re going to start something later or in the future.
    • But some things will come in the future that we need to begin preparing for right now.

[35:18] Hosting Seek Go Create for the Past 2 Years
    • Tim would have started podcasting sooner if someone told him how fun it would be.
    • The podcast has had 123 episodes and 81 interviews so far.
    • It has had around 30,000 downloads and over 9,000 listeners from its two hosting areas. This statistic excludes Facebook and YouTube metrics.
    • Moving forward, the Seek Go Create Podcast team is looking to identify how they can engage and interact more with listeners.

[39:28] Tim’s Answer to Seek, Go, Create
    • Seek is the most important for Tim. The quiet, still time of gaining wisdom and listening to God is most critical.
    • Seek serves as the foundation for the system of seek, go, create.

[40:27] “The quiet, still time of seeking, of gaining that wisdom, of listening to God, that is most critical for me. So I would answer the question that the foundation for me is that word seek. And then from seek, it is go and create.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    About Warren

Warren Rustand is an entrepreneur, corporate leader, educator, speaker, and philanthropist. He is currently the Dean of Learning for the EO Global Leadership Academy.

Early in his life, he served President Gerald Ford as his Appointments and Cabinet Secretary. After working in the public sector, Warren became CEO of ten companies and chairman of many others, both profit and nonprofit. He is also a multi-awarded leader, reaping recognitions such as The Visionary Leadership Award and The Distinguished Citizens Award, to name a few.

If you'd like to reach out to Warren, you can contact him on his website, Facebook, LinkedIn, or YouTube. You may also send an email to [email protected].

Episode Highlights[02:59] What Makes Great Leadership
    • Warren leads and scales organizations, mentors leading CEOs, and writes books on great leadership.
    • He believes that he did not become a leader because he was innately talented but because he had the opportunities to become one.
    • He accepted opportunities that he wasn’t qualified for and figured things out along the way. He saw these as challenges to help him learn and grow.
    • For Warren, the five qualities that make up great leadership are humility, listening and asking questions, effective communication, emotional intelligence, and IQ.
    • Listen to the full episode to hear Warren discuss these five qualities in-depth and how you can exercise these!

[10:01] Working in the White House
    • Warren was chosen through a nationally competitive process and was assigned to handle President Ford’s schedule.
    • Tune in to the full episode to hear Warren's gripping experience in President Ford's transition to the presidency. Also, learn what President Ford said to him when he turned in his resignation letter!
    • He thinks that President Ford is an example of humility, one of the five qualities of great leadership.
    • If he hadn’t worked for President Ford, Warren imagines his life would be different but still just as rich and fulfilling.
    • Working in the White House taught him many valuable lessons that he was able to apply long after his time there and built connections.

    [21:10] On the Political Landscape
    • Business and politics differ on a micro level, but great leadership in both areas is similar.
    • Warren finds the erosion of public trust in American institutions, the absence of great leadership, and the role of media in influencing public perception to be concerning.
    • He believes that the distrust in American leaders is justified because current leaders only say what the people want to stay in power.
    • Warren believes that we have great leadership coming up. He finds hope in the youth, claiming they think differently and have the opportunity to change the world.

[31:02] What Would Warren Do If He Were President?
    • He would build an inclusive presidency: be honest with the American people, trust their judgment, and encourage healthy debate.
    • Warren emphasizes the need to reflect the different colors, shapes, sizes, and genders that make up our nation.
    • Politicians should not hide the truth.
    • In creating public policy, Warren believes that collaboration, consensus, and compromise are crucial.

[34:06] Are Leaders Born or Made?
    • Our genetic package is encoded with leadership instincts.
    • But Warren thinks that great leadership is more of an acquired skill that we develop over time.
    • You can grow your leadership by exposing yourself to opportunities, learning from those experiences, and applying them in other aspects of your life.

    [36:21] Choosing A Life Partner
    • It’s critical to choose a great life partner because they influence you the most. They also provide balance.
    • Warren and his wife have their differences, but they share the same fundamental values.
    • Clarity and certainty of vision are critical.
    • The former gives you a clear view of where you want your life to lead, and the latter allows you to act intentionally towards that goal.

    [39:37] Warren’s Leadership Principles
    • Treat people not for who they are but for who they are becoming because that gives them the chance to become that person.
    • Recognize that we all have the potential to be great.
    • Discard self-limiting beliefs.
    • Have faith in people. Remember that great leadership is about serving a higher purpose.

[39:45] “Each of us at a moment in time is who we are. Let's accept each other for who we are and then let's go from there.” - Click Here to Tweet This[44:23] Learning From Failure
    • After a financial crisis struck, Warren lost tons of money in a single afternoon from a body sculpting business that he was trying to build.
    • Be mindful when leveraging.
    • Pay attention to the macro-financial and global issues that could potentially affect your business.
    • Our failures are humbling experiences. Be prepared to accept, rather than fight, the teaching moments in your life.
    • During these times, we should learn to forgive and ask for forgiveness, whether that’s from ourselves or other people.

    [49:13] Warren’s Mentoring Process
    • Warren sees mentoring as ‘coaching in the moment.’ It is more spontaneous rather than prescriptive.
    • Mentoring a person involves taking them as they currently are, assessing their challenges, and guiding them towards self-awareness and discovery.
    • Leaders are affected by other aspects of life. So, Warren provides holistic mentorship.
    • By serving other people, we begin to approach transcendence.

[50:49] “There are times when the greatest challenges a CEO has is in the confines of their own home. And if they can't get that right, they're not going to be much of a leader because it affects how we lead.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:46] Why Did Warren Write The Leader Within Us?
    • At first, he didn’t think anyone would be interested in what he had to say. But upon the urging of his friends and publishers, he decided to give it a shot.
    • Warren’s goal was to share his ideas and experiences on great leadership.
    • In his book, he details the testimonies of individuals who made courageous decisions under challenging circumstances to become who they wanted to be.
    • Listen to the full episode to find out what Warren found easy and difficult in the process of writing and why he refuses to write a book about working for President Ford.

    [59:56] Knowing Your Purpose
    • We all have a purpose, and it takes time and space to discover it.
    • Clarity of vision is crucial in deciding what our life will be about and who we will become.
    • Tune in to the full episode to hear about 'the second mountain' and how you can start moving towards transcendence.

[59:56] “I believe that each of us has a purpose. Our job is to discover it.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:03:04] The Importance of Stillness
    • Warren shares that almost every high-level person he met in the White House spent time quietly thinking.
    • Taking time to think gives way to introspection and deciding what you value.
    • You are important to your loved ones. The way you think, feel, and present yourself carries weight.
    • If you want to hear the remarkable story of Warren’s encounter with three mountain climbers, listen to the full episode!

[01:06:29] A Word To The Leaders
    • You have unlimited potential, but you must also practice discipline.
    • Greatness is a choice.
    • Most importantly, learn to love, learn, serve, and become.

[01:06:48] “Greatness is not a circumstance. Greatness is choice and discipline. People choose to be great, and then discipline themselves to be great. So make that choice.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    • Indians are getting used to the situation despite the multiple restrictions imposed by the government.

[07:04] Why Someone Should Have a Book
    • When we need the expertise of someone, our logical minds will be inclined towards choosing someone who’s a best-selling author.
    • Establish yourself as an authority and separate yourself from the competition by becoming an author.

[07:54] “If you want to have authority on your topic, then you have to become an author.” - Click Here to Tweet This[09:25] Helping People Learn How to Self-Publish a Book

[11:36] How Vikrant Became an Expert in His Field
    • When Vikrant graduated from high school, he asked himself what he wanted to do in life.
    • Everyone else was taking engineering, so Vikrant did the same.
    • He eventually realized that he didn’t want to be an engineer.

    [12:55] Indian Culture
    • Indian culture generally values engineering or medicine over other courses. You are considered a failure if you’re not a doctor or engineer.
    • Because of COVID, everything is now online. People are becoming more understanding of online business.

[14:22] How Vikrant Realized He Didn’t Want to Be an Engineer
    • Reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad completely changed how Vikrant thought about life and finance.

    • Awaken the Giant Within gave Vikrant the motivation to keep moving forward.
    • Vikrant was persistent. His number one motivation was to pay the bills and make money to survive.
    • He believes that one book can transform your life and the way you do business.
    • Whatever your expertise is, you can write a book on it and have a back-end business.

[26:14] “For every aspect of my life, I have read a book around that topic. It has changed my life in every aspect. Maybe you think why people would want to read my book. The thing is, ask yourself, is there anything you do better than everyone else in the world?” - Click Here to Tweet This[27:48] Who Should Write a Book
    • Vikrant says not everyone should write a book.
    • You have to be clear of your “why.” If you are passionate and motivated about that “why,” that’s when you publish a book.
    • Vikrant used to think that writing a book is only for people in the information industry who want to share something.
    • His perception changed when a client with a physical product asked for his help.
    • You can use a book to position yourself as a leader in your industry. Through this, you get more opportunities.

[32:00] “He was clear on his why: that why he wanted to write the book. To all the premium clients, he distributes the book for free, like the physical copy. And those distributors of his products, they read the book. They understand exactly how that works. They believed in his product. Then, they distribute his product. So once you understand that, like how a book can position you, position your product, positioning your brand, position your services or coaching, whatever it is, you can do that.” - Click Here to Tweet This[33:29] Looking at the Bigger Picture
    • Vikrant shares from experience that 99% of the time, you will not make good money from book royalties.

[40:46] How the Book Publishing Industry has Changed
    • The chances of your manuscript getting picked by a traditional publishing company are low. It can take several years or an entire lifetime.
    • The self-publishing industry has completely changed the game.
    • People don’t care where or how you publish your book. They care about whether you can solve their problem or entertain them.
    • Some people still believe that if a company publishes you, they will take care of the marketing. However, you actually have to do the marketing yourself.
    • Listen to the full episode for more myths on traditional publishing.

[43:12] “People really don’t care whether you are published with a traditional publishing company. They really care about whether you can solve their problem.” - Click Here to Tweet This[47:23] Working with People from Different Industries
    • Vikrant works on his clients’ “whys” before proceeding to the next step.
    • A first book outline is the most important step to complete the book because people tend to procrastinate.
    •  With this, you have your information ready, and you won’t be completely overwhelmed.

    [51:20] Creating a Book Outline
    • Vikrant mentions four elements that become your outline quadrant.
    • When we understand these four elements, it gets easier for the client and the angel writer to understand everything about the book.
    • These four are the basic idea of the book, why you are writing it, your target reader, and your book’s hook.

[52:39] Angel Writers vs. Ghost Writers
    • Most ghostwriters take your outline, then write your book in their voice.
    • Angel writing is a hybrid ghostwriting process.
    • The system is designed to follow a set protocol to create the book outline quadrant and do things step-by-step with set questions.
    • The client is updated and consulted throughout the entire writing process.

    [55:57] How to Self-Publish a Book
    • Most people get overwhelmed by the process of how to self-publish a book because there are so many different steps to write, publish, and market it.
    • There are three simplified phases: produce, publish, and profit.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn more about the three phases of how to self-publish a book!

[59:02] What Vikrant has Learned about Himself
    • Vikrant discovered that he’s great at generating systems, creating processes, and making complex things simple.

    [01:03:53] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • Vikrant chooses to seek. His first business failed because he desperately wanted to create something and make money.
    • Always seek questions on why you are doing it.
    • If you don’t do the first step properly, you cannot create something amazing.

He believes that the right values will empower employees and allow leaders to gain the leverage they need to grow revenue and profit.

With over 40 years of experience in business, Bobby was able to develop a process with specific principles, strategies, and implementation tools to intentionally create a culture that is focused on people and their gifts.

Bobby has also written several books on the topic including The Freedom Paradox, True North Business, Principled Profits, and Goal Setting Success.

Interested in Bobby’s work? Check out his website.

You can also reach him on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

Episode Highlights[03:18] What Bobby Does and Words of Encouragement
    • He encourages Christian business leaders to integrate the Lordship of Jesus Christ in every aspect of their lives.
    • Bobby shares that his father’s death propelled him into becoming a leader of a business that had outstanding debt.
    • Despite this crisis, he was able to grow the company to over 150 employees and sell it to a publicly traded company.
    • You can create a successful business with the right principle and practice.

[07:31] “I tell you what, through those tough times, that if you're experiencing tough times right now in your business, I've learned that everyone can build a successful life and business, or even a church, by applying certain principles and practices in their life and business.” - Click Here to Tweet This[10:29] The Value of Humility
    • Bobby shares that his father taught him the importance of humility. He was encouraged to not act like the boss’ son in his first job.
    • To pay off the debt, Bobby sold his car and rode with an employee to work.
    • He also had to ask their five employees to take a pay cut.
    • Encouraged by Jesus’s servant leadership, Bobby took his organizational chart, turned it upside down, and placed himself at the bottom.
    • At the very top of his organizational chart is Jesus Christ.

[19:27] “Jesus said to His disciples, ‘I come to serve and not be served.’ So with that thought in the background is that I took the organization chart and turned it upside down.” - Click Here to Tweet This[21:53] Being a Christian Business
    • Some Christian business people try to separate and compartmentalize ministry from work.
    • For Bobby, Christian business leaders should not divide the two; God is glorified every time we use our talents, skills, and gifts.
    • Bobby did not promote his company as a Christian business. However, he did declare that he wanted to view his work as a ministry and not just a job.
    • As Colossians 3:23-24 states, whatever you do, do it with all your heart for the Lord.
    • Bobby also makes this explicit to all his employees, that they work for God and not for him.

[26:39] “Our employees clearly heard me say that they came to work for the Lord Jesus Christ every day, not for Bobby Albert.” - Click Here to Tweet This[27:32] Hiring Employees as a Christian Business Leader
    • Bobby does not specifically choose Christians to join his company. But he makes sure that applicants know that he is one and that they’re comfortable with it.

[30:36] Setting a Standard of Excellence
    • Don’t be a hypocrite; be consistent with how you act in every setting.
    • As Bobby looked up the founding of the country, the values of freedom and responsibility stood out to him.
    • The more we act responsibly, the more freedom we have. The same is true for the opposite.
    • Throughout history, the Bible was used extensively to teach what it means to be responsible.

[36:14] “As we behave more irresponsibly, the more freedoms we lose. The more we behave responsibly, the more freedoms we gain.” - Click Here to Tweet This[42:40] Things to Keep in Mind
    • Choose principle and right decisions over expediency, or emotional decisions.
    • Live in an abundance mindset rather than a scarcity mindset.
    • Find the root cause of problems, rather than trying to solve the symptoms.
    • Know the difference between process and content. The process focuses on the how, while content looks at what.
    • Take the responsibility of picking people up instead of putting them down.

[48:19] Is There Hope for Unity?
    • Bobby believes that there is hope for unity in the United States.
    • The country is being led towards idols and gods more than ever, but there is still hope.
    • As kingdoms crumble under the weight of sins, the more God is needed for healing.
    • Our role is to shine on and keep sharing the gospel with everyone around us.

[50:34] How to Change the Company Culture
    • Bobby shares the four pillars of mind, body, spirit, and emotion that his company focuses on.
    • For the mind, Bobby provides learning sessions and also scholarships opportunities for his employees.
    • They also have a wellness program in their company, which includes coaching for weight loss and quitting smoking, to name a few.
    • Developing the spiritual side includes holding Bible studies and creating prayer teams.
    • To help with stress levels, they hold events such as Happy Fridays. Tune in to the full episode to hear more about Bobby’s efforts to take care of his employees and customers!

[01:01:08] What You Can Do as a Christian Business Leader
    • As a Christian business leader, you can do much more than you realize.
    • First, you can choose where to spend your money.
    • However, you cannot force people to attend Bible studies.
    • Learn to accommodate people’s preferences as long as it does not disrupt your business.

[01:04:15] Seek God in All Things
    • Many people often seek human wisdom, when God’s wisdom is far superior.
    • Change your workplace culture by identifying gaps first.
    • Tap into people’s will and don’t destroy it.

[01:05:19] “God's wisdom is a lot better than human wisdom. I see people turning to human reason today when God is right there that wants to help them and reach, reach up and pull them out of the crisis they're in.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:10:44] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • ‘Go’ stands out to Bobby the most.
    •  He shares Jesus’ words: “Go and make disciples.”

  • Measuring Success Through Love, Faith, and Peace

Success looks different for each of us. However, most of us use worldly achievements as a basis to determine the magnitude of our success.  More often than not, these are tangible things associated with numbers. But at the end of your life, can you say that you are truly fulfilled? To avoid living with regret, start measuring success by looking deep into yourself and drowning out the noise from the physical realm.

In this episode, Tim delves into alternative ways of measuring success. He shares his version of the Scripture’s fruits of the Spirit and breaks down what each of them means. Once these fruits start lining up, then we begin living a life of peace and shalom. He also talks about the origin story of the podcast and how it has shaped his life today.

Listen to the episode to find out the bigger, more important way of measuring success through love, faith, and peace!

    1. Find out what the Scripture says about measuring success.

    Episode Highlights [01:05] Defining Success
    • The events that happened over the last 15 years of Tim’s life prompted him to think about how we define success.
    • Most people define their success through money, stuff, titles, the past, the future, time, people, and comparison.
    • However, measuring success this way leads to stress.

    [04:04] How the Lord Works
    • Sometimes, we see the Lord doing things in our lives, but we’re not sure how they fit together.
    • Eventually, everything will start coming together.
    • Tune in to the full episode to hear Tim’s example for this situation.

    [05:37] Measuring Success
    • The Scripture says that we should not judge others.
    • However, we are allowed to look at the fruits that they have to measure success.

     [07:13] What the Scripture Says
    • Galatians 5:16–26 tackles Paul’s conversation about walking in the Spirit. It gives a great example of how we can measure ourselves on how well we’re doing.
    • Are you walking in the flesh or the Spirit? You can measure your success by looking at how well you are doing in the latter.
    • Walking in the flesh looks like adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, envy, murder, drunkenness, and revelry.
    • Meanwhile, the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, long-suffering/patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    [09:48] On Success and Longevity
    • Most people only live to 70 or 80 years old. People with longevity can reach beyond 100.
    • Longevity isn’t the best measure of success. However, it is an indication of the quality of life you live.
    • Stress is one of the biggest killers we have. It builds anxiety and removes years from our lives.
    • Populations with longevity tend to move naturally in nature, have the right outlook and attitude, eat wisely, and be connected.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn which places in the world have a longer-living population!

[12:57] “Stress, to me, is one of the biggest killers that we have. It really takes away a lot of the joy in our life. It takes away a lot of what I would think would be success because it builds in anxiety.” - Click Here to Tweet This[15:28] What We are Created for
    • Longevity was part of what was formulating in Tim’s mind as he began working on his projects.
    • Our ultimate design is to live a long, healthy, prosperous life filled with joy.
    • Tim wants to focus on doing things to work toward living this kind of life.

[16:25] “Our ultimate design is to live that long, long life and for it to be of joy, and peace, and happiness.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:01] Tim’s Version of the Fruits of the Spirit
    • Paul’s list of fruits could fall under Tim’s version of three fruits.
    • Tim felt that his novel was inspired divinely. The Lord gave him the three principles that he should focus on.
    • These three fruits are love, faith, and peace. Tim started to measure much of what he does by these.

    [19:33] Fruit #1: Love
    • Tim never thought to measure his success and define himself through love. He realized that his motives were wrong, so he shifted his mindset.
    • Love is one of the foundational principles we all need to have and be able to measure.
    • At the macro level, there are plenty of issues, challenges, and division going on in the world.
    • The deep meaning of love is about understanding, compassion, and empathy for others.
    • If it’s something you’re conveying, the people around you can tell you about it.

[20:47] “ The fruit of the Spirit, love, that Paul talks about here, really, is one of the foundational principles that I need to have, that I believe you need to have, that we need to have, that we need to be able to measure.” - Click Here to Tweet This[23:03] Fruit #2: Faith
    • For Tim, faith is a deep conviction and understanding that the world is not all about you.
    • The bigger picture for Tim is that God created all of us. So, he measures his success based on how well he operates based on that definition.
    • A lot of people think that the world revolves around them. This belief shows in their actions.
    • The Book of John says that we are to love God, love others, then love ourselves—in this order.

    [25:44] Fruit #3: Peace
    • We can also use the word “rest” or “shalom” for this fruit.
    • Shalom is being at peace—spirit, soul, and body. There is no conflict between the mind and the spirit.
    • Being at peace is when we begin experiencing times where we don’t have stress.
    • We move into hypocrisy when our minds and actions do not line up with our body and spirit.
    • This unalignment leads to stress and anxiety.

[27:54] What the Three Fruits Cascade Into
    • When the three fruits start lining up, it cascades into living a less stressful life of shalom.
    • Tim tackles these principles and how they inspire us to start measuring success differently in his book.

[27:57] “When one has an understanding, compassion, and love for other people, and then when they’ve got a fate that things are bigger than them, I think when those start lining up, then it cascades into living a less stressful, a more at peace, more at rest, a life of shalom.” - Click Here to Tweet This[28:40] Seek, Go, Create
    • These words originated back in 2008–2009 when Tim was going through one of the most financially challenging times of his life.
    • After begging the Lord, he divinely received four words: seek, go, create, and NOW.
    • These allowed him to stay on track in having the fruit of the Spirit.

    [32:05] Seek
    • For Tim, it was talking to the Lord, listening, and seeking what He wanted him to do.
    • We all have specific purposes and assignments God created us for.
    • Tim does the best he can to have a better gauge when it comes to measuring success.

    [33:27] Go
    • Being in a challenging time made Tim fearful of doing things.
    • He had to be reminded that the step after seeking and doing research is to go.
    • The Scripture “Go into the world” became the mantra of Tim and his wife.
    • Seek first, then get ready to go out and do something.

    [34:51] Create
    • Tim used to say that he was not a creative person.
    • He later realized that we were designed to create because God made us after His image.
    • The challenging thing is to identify the seek and go part to find out what we should create.

    [36:25] NOW!
    • There’s no reason to wait once the three things are all in place.

[36:38] “Don’t pause. Don’t wait. If you’ve got all those other things in place, do it now. There’s no reason to wait.” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:33] Measuring Success through the Fruits of the Spirit
    • There’s nothing wrong with money and material things. But the three fruits are bigger, more important measurements of success.

    • Currently, he plays matchmaker for non-food franchises, helping people find the best business to franchise.
    • He studied at the University of Georgia, where he got into leadership roles and connected with people.
    • As a kid, Jon’s family was lower middle class. Amongst his peers, he was the one who had to purchase his first car with his own money.

    [09:26] Jon’s Thoughts on Success
    • Jon’s parents sacrificed a lot to send their four kids to a private Christian school. Although they were not rich, they had everything they needed.
    • However, paying for his college education and his first car made Jon a little bit resentful.
    • Maturity changed his perspective; he became more appreciative.
    • Jon’s upbringing contributed to his inner drive to strive hard and achieve success.
    • It also has something to do with how he’s wired; he can’t resist going out and making things happen.

[10:57] “We’ve been very blessed financially, but the big verse in my mission is really, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected,’ and I do feel the weight of not wasting gifts that have been given to me or opportunities that have been given to me to try and help others.” - Click Here to Tweet This[11:23] The Growth Mindset
    • People can either have a growth or fixed mindset.
    • Jon currently prioritizes time over money.
    • At 40, his mindset has shifted. But he still wants to explore and evolve.

[15:08] Jon’s Takeaways from His Experiences
    • Working at Accenture taught Jon to play to his strengths and muscle through difficulties.
    • He believes in the value of grinding early on and being willing to pay your dues.

    • Be careful what you put in an email. What you put in there could be read by third parties that don't understand the intention behind the messages.

[15:57] “Some of those peers have gone on to do great things, who started out really fast, they never really humbled themselves. And as a result, when things didn’t work out, they weren’t willing to start again at the bottom of the totem pole.” - Click Here to Tweet This[22:00] Jon’s Current Season

    • When he was young, Jon used to hear his parents having conversations on how to cover their expenses.
    • He decided that he wanted to get past these conversations. Now, Jon talks about investing and building his portfolio.

    [32:11] Getting Into Non-Food Franchising
    • In his quest to scratch his entrepreneurial itch, Jon connected with an international franchise system and fell in love with the business model.
    • Most people think of food when looking for a business to franchise.
    • However, many business owners do not want to get into the food industry because of the upfront costs, staffing, and inventory issues.
    • Right now, franchisees are experiencing a labor challenge. However, Jon and his team are managing customer demand by giving employee incentives.

[39:28] Looking for a Business to Franchise in the Pandemic
    • When COVID hit, they saw a decrease in people looking for a business to franchise. But only after three or four weeks, sales ramped back up.
    • The pandemic has caused many people to question their path and explore their entrepreneurial side.
    • Now, the non-sexy industries have become sexy—the ones that are easy to understand and COVID-resistant. Listen to the full episode to find out more about these businesses!

[40:48] “The non-sexy industries are now the sexy industries. So whether it be driveways or kitchen remodeling, obviously everyone’s spending on their homes... People love those kinds of non-sexy businesses that are COVID resistant, Amazon resistant, and just understandable.” - Click Here to Tweet This[43:52] Pros and Cons of Franchising
    • When you get a business to franchise, you get to work for yourself, but not by yourself.
    • You've got a franchisor acting as a coach, other franchisees who are on the same team, and a playbook.
    • In addition, franchises sell 1.5x more than non-franchise counterparts. So, when you get a business to franchise, your chances of success are much higher.
    • But if you’re too entrepreneurial and want to put your spin on things, a business to franchise may not be for you.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn more about the pros and cons of being a franchisee and some business ideas!

[44:49] “Franchising is not entirely foolproof. But at the same time, if you're good with people, if you're halfway intelligent, it's not that hard to be successful when you're given the framework that you're getting with franchising.”- Click Here to Tweet This[53:24] Crucial Skills and Mindsets for Franchisees
    • People have more regret over not acting than acting.
    • If you want to be a franchisee, you’ve got to be able to make tough calls involving people management and brand promotion.
    • Understand that franchising is a business; treat it as a business.
    • Marketing could feel like pulling money out of your pocket, but you’ve got to set a budget.
    • Structure expectations with your employees at the beginning, including what you do versus what they do.

    [01:01:34] The Future of Franchising
    • Jon does not see franchising slowing down anytime soon.
    • With the dynamics of the stock market and real estate, franchising is a good way for investors to diversify their portfolios.

    [01:07:11] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • Jon resonates with ‘go’ because he does not like sitting on the sidelines
    • His advice: don’t be a bystander in life.

[01:07:13] “I'm a big believer in not sitting on the sidelines and watching life lived out ahead of you. You know, get out there, get in the arena. I believe activity breeds activity in my life.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    About Eric

Eric Nevins is the founder and leader of the Christian Podcasters Association, with over 2400 Facebook group members. It is a space for Christian podcasters with the calling of using their gifts and expertise to get a message out. He is also the host of the Halfway There Podcast. The show is devoted to creating honest conversations with ordinary Christians about the modern Christian experience.

Eric is also the Category Director for Religion & Spirituality in Podcast Magazine.

To know more about Eric and his work, you can connect with him through his website, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Episode Highlights [03:21] What Eric Does
    • Eric is an online entrepreneur. He manages the Christian Podcasters Association (CPA).
    • He sees himself as a pastor who shepherds people using podcasting.
    • Eric spent a long time trying to be a traditional church pastor, but it never worked out.
    • Most church pastors don’t have the time or ability to help people break through self-doubt. It’s what Eric uniquely does in the online space.

[06:58] What to Do When You’re Mad at God
    • You have to have a conversation with God when you’re mad at him.
    • He started his Christian podcast to help people who are going through a spiritual desert.
    • Eric realized that there's more to the story in the Scripture than he had been told. Tune in to the full episode to learn the real lesson from the Book of Habakkuk!
    • The spiritual journey is much more than meeting Jesus; it's about taking your worries to him and letting him address them.

[10:31] Experiences That Shaped Eric’s Youth
    • Eric’s faith experience as a kid was different from his home experience. Trying to make sense of his home life was huge for him.
    • He wanted to break through some of the Midwest cultures.
    • He got a healthy dose of the purity culture growing up. It's a challenging process to keep your faith in the Lord and lose some things that are not biblical.
    • Eric loved being creative as a kid. Today, he gets to be a creator full-time.
    • The driving question for Eric is, "How do we grow in Christ?" It pushed him to get a degree in Biblical Studies, enter the seminary, and learn from the spiritual journey.

[15:45] Experiencing the Driest Spiritual Time in Seminary
    • Eric was full of anxiety in seminary. The traditional model didn’t resonate with his heart.
    • He found an entry in his old journal about him thinking that God’s path for him is unconventional ministry.
    • Eric didn’t have a good perspective on what serving people in other ways could look like outside of the local church.

[18:43] Different Phases of the Spiritual Journey
    • The phase of learning the way of Jesus typically happens in church, worship, preaching, or Bible study.
    • Bible school or seminary is the pinnacle of that season in the journey. However, it's not the end.
    • During the critical journey, you bump into the wall. Tune in to the full episode to learn the two possible paths to this!

    [20:19] Being a Spiritual Director
    • According to Eugene H. Peterson, the role of the pastor is prayer, Scripture reading, and spiritual direction.
    • Most local pastors don’t do spiritual direction as a large part of their ministry. But being a pastor has to be much more personal.
    • Tune in to the full episode to learn how Suzanne Stabile became one of the top enneagram teachers in the world!

[23:34] The Pros and Cons of Conventional vs. Unconventional Ministry
    • It always comes down to whether we are leading people to maturity.
    • Unconventional churches have the perfect system because they lead people to maturity.
    • Podcasting allows people to get inspiration. It also lets them create connections to talk about an idea and how to apply it.
    • Spiritual maturity requires a certain amount of independence. The conventional church system has a design that keeps people dependent.
    • People aren't paying for knowledge but for experiences.

[27:08] Starting the Halfway There Podcast
    • Eric never got into ministry after graduating from seminary. He ended up working in the financial world for 13 years, which was a dark time for him.

    • Listen to the full episode to hear how Eric discovered and started listening to podcasts!
    • Getting inspiration from Christian podcasts, Eric started his show hoping to contribute to the spiritual formation conversation.
    • It took him two years, doing 13 interviews and hiring a coach to help him break through.

[30:38] How Podcasting Changed Eric and How He Switched Things Up in the Show
    • He started believing in God’s involvement in the world in a way he didn’t before.
    • Working with podcasters creates a ripple effect in terms of reach and influence.
    • Early on, he used to do an extra recorded introduction for each episode. After some time, he switched to doing live introductions.
    • Eric wants to get to the content as quickly as possible. It only takes him around 90 seconds to introduce his guests.
    • If the guest has a book, he tries to mention it at the beginning of the episode.

[36:19] Evolution of the Christian Podcasters Association (CPA)
    • There was no group for Christian podcasters before the Christian Podcasters Association. Listen to the full episode to discover how Eric founded the CPA!
    • CPA’s goal is to bring Christian podcasters together to connect and help each other.
    • The focus on podcasting and not theology in CPA is intentional.
    • CPA was free for a long time. But last year, they launched a membership that allows members to access group meetings and courses.
    • Eric's vision for the CPA is to be a place where aspiring podcasters can start learning and eventually become pro-podcasters.

[45:14] The Biggest Hindrances to Someone Starting a Podcast
    • The biggest thing is always fear, which shows up as perfectionism.
    • Another hindrance is when people don't know where to start with the technology required.
    • Figuring out how to host can be pretty intimidating to people.
    • Three common questions: What would I talk about? What’s the technology? How do I grow my show?
    • Podcasting is easy as there are no gatekeepers and rules in the new media.

[48:11] The Next Big Challenge after Launching a Podcast
    • Podcasting is a long game. It takes time to build relationships and get feedback.
    • It can be a little discouraging, but you need to be clear about why you’re doing it.
    • Once you commit to it, you must continually produce content.
    • The five Ms in podcasting are mindset, message, mechanics, marketing, and monetization.

    [51:49] Christian Podcast Summit
    • The speakers at the summit will talk about different ways of monetization.
    • There will also be breakout sessions.

[55:14] How Much Does It Cost to Run a Podcast?
    • Podcasters need to invest in three things: decent microphone, website, and podcast hosting.
    • Then, you need to learn additional skills to run the show.

    [56:56] Sharing Your Message
    • Podcasting gives Christians the opportunity to share in a way that helps their discipleship and encourages other people.
    • Listen to the full episode for Eric’s uplifting message about starting a podcast!
    • Podcasting is about becoming the person God wants you to be and finding yourself in Christ.

    [01:05:41] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • For Eric, it's always "create."
    • The act of creation impacts and changes the world.

Episode Highlights[02:45] The Importance of Words
    • Aurora helps people convert their words into wealth, wonder, and wisdom.
    • Words are powerful, and they're something everyone has at their disposal.
    • The things that you’re offering don’t have to attract everyone.
    • As you learn how to communicate effectively, your words can attract or repel.
    • That’s okay; you can’t be the right resource person for everyone.

[02:55] “I help people turn their words into wealth, wonder, and wisdom. I think so many people have at their disposal their breath, their words.” - Click Here to Tweet This[07:45] Using a Little Bit More Wonder
    • There is nothing wrong with pursuing money, but our society has gotten too obsessed with money.
    • A rich life has multiple aspects, one of which is wonder.
    • We need more wonder and awe in our lives.
    • Too much focus on money makes us live two-dimensional lives.

[09:24] Bridging Hollywood And Silicon Valley
    • Aurora aims to bring out the best of both worlds.
    • Silicon Valley is where all the smart engineers in the tech space are.
    • However, the people there don’t always know how to communicate effectively.
    • Meanwhile, Hollywood has all the dazzle, twinkle, and glow of the entertainment industry.
    • She brings the attention-catching communication methods of Hollywood into the business space.

    [12:34] How Aurora Gained Experience
    • Aurora has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. She sold her first business for six figures in her 20s and launched other successful ventures.
    • She also always loved writing.
    • Aurora majored in economics and was an executive and market feasibility analyst but had less time for herself.
    • Later, she and her husband started a yacht charter business and eventually moved on to selling boats.
    • Aurora admits that she has a restless mind. She channels this towards thinking of ways to add value to her pursuits. Tune in to the full episode to know how she does!

[19:16] Reconciling Ideas and the Message
    • Emphasize asking the question, “How can I add more value?”
    • Doing so will make you avoid competing head-to-head with others.
    • The honest answer is not always the most exciting.
    • You have to merge a million-dollar idea with a million-dollar message.

    [21:46] Understanding Motivations
    • Aurora realized that all the tax benefits she advertised were merely bells & whistles to people who only want a boat.
    • She also helps people publish their books and provide media training.
    • It’s not always about tax savings.
    • It’s also about improving how things are normally done.

    [25:40] The Female Perspective
    • When she was young, Aurora thought that the playing field for men and women was equal.
    • She did not want to play the victim card.
    • Now that she's older, she realized that women are not heard as much—something that she is passionate about.
    • The neuroscience of communication plays a significant role in being heard and learning how to communicate effectively.

    [28:38] How to Communicate Effectively
    • Women are used to talking longer and with more words.
    • Sometimes, as women talk, they’re only just discovering what they want to say.
    • This is fine in personal relationships but problematic in professional settings.
    • You can learn how to communicate effectively by understanding the neuroscience behind it.

[29:18] The Three Steps in the Neuroscience of Communication
    • First, you have to catch the attention of the person you’re addressing. You can visualize this as going past a crocodile.
    • Second, you have to pass the social sniff test, which you can visualize as knights barring your way.
    • After you pass these two steps, then you can deliver the message to the king and queen.
    • Remember that you want to address both the king and queen. So, you need a good balance between numbers and statistics.
    • Your audience should know the point of the story. Breaking your message down into chunks helps.

    [34:48] How Aurora Redefines Success
    • Ask yourself what you are good at in terms of mastery and practice.
    • Next, ask what fills you with joy and energy.
    • Finally, ask who can benefit the most from your work.
    • If the pandemic had not happened, we would all have very different lives.
    • We do not know what the future holds. Listen to the full episode to hear Aurora’s stories of cataclysmic choices and significant life experiences.

[42:13] Why Every Expert, Entrepreneur, and Leader Needs a Book
    • Leaders are people who have something valuable to say and share with others.
    • A book is a fixed form that encapsulates your ideas. It’s like a seed.
    • Writing the right book will boost your business while sending a clearer message of who you are.
    • A podcast with episodes feels pretty much like a book with chapters.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn about the value that Aurora gains from writing books.

[43:19] "Every entrepreneur and leader would benefit from a book for two purposes. One, to share their message one-to-many and leverage their time much more effectively. Two, to chain the framing of the conversation so they're not just seen as another entrepreneur with another widget." - Click Here to Tweet This[51:43] The Beauty of Writing a Book
    • Around 80% of people want to write a book.
    • First-time authors usually take more than three years to do so. However, most authors don't publish their works.
    • Your book is a story that someone can relate to, even if we often take these for granted.
    • A book is also your legacy; it can travel over time and touch the lives of others.

[51:57] “I’d love everybody to appreciate the value of their authentic story, the things that you've lived through your expertise and your life experience can be valuable to others.” - Click Here to Tweet This[55:08] Advice for Those Who are Hesitating
    • Who are you to dismiss who you are and what you have to offer? Do not let your ego dictate what you create.
    • Somebody needs your message, especially those who are going through a similar emotional journey.
    • Aurora helps those who have an idea but need a structure for their words.

[55:13] "Who are you to dismiss who you are? And who are you to let your ego be dictating what you create?... And what is creation? Well, I feel like we're all little droplets of water in the ocean of God, or unified field, or the universe, whatever word works best for you. So do your little job as your little droplet of water, your little droplet of divinity, your little droplet of creation. And maybe you, maybe a book is not what you create, but don't create it from the, 'Who am I and who would listen to me,' because somebody needs your message." - Click Here to Tweet This[01:00:10] How Aurora Works
    • Aurora creates drafts extremely fast to have a general theme.
    • Speed can also alleviate overthinking and make the writing process more alive.
    • Don’t start editing and rewriting immediately. Finish your first draft first.
    • If you're still hesitant about doing something, try out the 90-Days Challenge. In this challenge, you write and read every day, and reflect weekly.
    • After these 90 days, you’ll get clarity on what you need to do moving forward.

    [01:09:11] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • Aurora connects with ‘create’ the most.
    • She loves creating and believes that everyone can create something new.

    Episode Highlights[03:04] What Tom Does
    • Tom helps people gain exposure through targeted podcasts and interviews.
    • He believes that the strategy to promote your business never changes.
    • You do not need to be louder to break through the noise.
    • Instead, be on platforms where people are already listening.

[03:18] “I believe that people's biggest problem is obscurity, right? There’s thousands, millions of people you could help right now. The problem is they don't know you exist.” - Click Here to Tweet This[07:40] Identifying Your Ideal Customer
    • We believe that we can help everyone, but not all people are going to resonate with you.
    • Ask yourself: who are your best customers, who do you add the most value to, and how can you find more of these people?

    [10:08] Living in Michigan
    • Tom was originally from the suburbs of Chicago where he graduated from the US Naval Academy.
    • In 1992, he took a job in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
    • For Tom, the best musicians from Michigan are Stevie Wonder and Madonna. He also mentions one country star from Battle Creek.

[13:31] What Tom Learned from his Engineering Training
    • Draw a picture when you don’t understand a problem.
    • Soon, you’re going to be limited by the size of your paper, not the size of your intellect.
    • There is not one final solution to a problem.
    • Be cantankerous; strive more and don’t accept anything less. In everything he does, Tom asks: is there a better way to do this?
    • The second law of thermodynamics states that entropy always increases. So, you always have to work to get your life in order.

[13:34] “If you don't understand a problem, draw a picture. If you still don't understand it, draw a bigger picture… Sooner or later, you're going to be limited by the size of your paper, not the size of your intellect.” - Click Here to Tweet This[22:17] How Tom Redefines Success
    • After hitting his five-year point at the US Naval Academy, he decided to leave.
    • His father told him that he was a fool for walking away from this great career.
    • Tom then worked as an engineer and became successful in the corporate world. Yet, he felt miserable.
    • Tom saw an opportunity in selling medical devices; that’s where he flourished.
    • For him, following your success means going for where happiness lies. Tom aims to continuously be a better person.

[27:45] Message For People Still Redefining Their Success
    • At the end of the day, nobody really cares about what you do.
    • The most important thing is how you view yourself.
    • Nothing is guaranteed in life. Every day is a gift, not a given.
    • So, go for it. What’s the worst that can happen?

[31:10] Using Platforms to Promote Your Business
    • Everything in the world, Tom believes, is evolving. Nothing under the sun is new.
    • He built a company up through inbound marketing and sold it off.
    • In 2014, Tom got an idea along with his other friends to promote a business by being a guest on podcasts.
    • Years back, you had to write blogs or send them to big publications to promote your business.
    • Tom decided to tap into this idea to promote your business through podcasts.

    [35:34] The Evolution of Podcasts
    • Podcasts are called as such because they used to be listened to on iPods.
    • We live in a time where it is easy for us to create content and repurpose it for others.
    • Tom believes that the future is vivid audio, not video.
    • That’s because audio is more relatable and engaging across generations.

[36:58] “We live in such a time today that we can create easily, in the format that's easiest for us, and then repurpose it in the way that's easiest for other people.” - Click Here to Tweet This[42:07] Challenges for the Industry
    • People have become so enamored with technology and tactics, that they’ve forgotten about strategy.
    • Many people understand the parts of their business, but not its heart and soul.
    • Before you jump into a platform to promote your business, consider if your audience is there.

    [45:52] Building Relationships
    • Invest in relationships.
    • Having followers on any platform does not equate to having a relationship with your audience.

[45:52] “One of the things that my grandfather told me was, ‘Relationships are the ultimate currency.’ And it's so true; it's the one thing that inflation can't take. You know, and I would even say death can't take it.” - Click Here to Tweet This[47:49] Sharing Your Expertise
    • We all have something to share.
    • You don’t have to be the best at what you do to be considered an expert.
    • You can share your insights based on your life experiences. Take on what you learn and pass it on to others.

[51:09] How to Become Less Obscure
    • Get exposure; it brings opportunity.
    • Look at how your message or expertise can help people.
    • Find out your strengths and weaknesses. These characteristics can influence how you’re going to promote your business.
    • Being a podcast host is a great way to nurture your current leads.
    • But if you want to promote your business and get more exposure, guesting in other people’s shows is the ideal move.

[54:06] What People Typically Do Wrong
    • Oftentimes, people start without a strategy. They also have too many choices.
    • Make sure that the podcast where you want to promote your business has your ideal audience.
    • Next, look at the podcast’s website. Are people going to find your business through their site?
    • The third thing is the podcast’s reach. Are people listening to the show?
    • Finally, make sure that the podcast is consistent with your brand.

    [58:23] Who Interview Valet Helps
    • Their company’s mission is to introduce inspiring thought leaders to millions of their ideal audiences.
    • They also help individuals with a national audience.
    • Further, they assist businesses to generate sales built on relationships.

    [01:02:23] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • For Tom, it’s “create.”
    • Ideas are worthless without implementation, so it’s all about creation.

  • Redefining the Meaning of Success and Overcoming Roadblocks Along the Way

Take a minute to think about the people you look up to, whether you know them personally or not. Do you feel a tinge of jealousy?

In this modern world, it's so easy to compare ourselves to others. People often measure their success through the standards and achievements of those around them. It's all too easy to end up chasing someone else's meaning of success, even if it is a roadblock for us.

So what is the meaning of success, and how can we achieve it?

In this episode, Tim talks about giving meaning to success to suit us and creating a life we are called to live. He also discusses the seven roadblocks of money, stuff, titles, past and/or future, time, people, and comparison. We need to be aware of these things that will stop us from achieving our life purpose.

Listen to the episode if you want to find out how to overcome these roadblocks and move toward what you’re created to do!

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Learn why we should redefine our meaning of success and stop looking for the answer from others.
    2. Discover the seven roadblocks to success and how we can overcome them.
    3. Understand that we should not obsess over these roadblocks to the point of stress and anxiety.

Episode Highlights[05:37] What Is the Meaning of Success?
    • The Merriam-Webster dictionary has varied definitions of success.
    • While we can measure an elusive concept like success, remember that we all define success differently.
    • Tim’s meaning of success is evolving. He currently defines success as the process of moving towards the life that you were created to live.

[10:51] “[Success] is the process of moving towards the life that you were created to live.” - Click Here to Tweet This[11:05] Redefining the Meaning of Success
    • Tim’s redefinition comes from a foundational belief system that we’re all created for a purpose while on this earth.
    • Your purpose or assignment will not become apparent until you develop that relationship of listening and obeying God.
    • On the way to achieve our purpose, we will need to go through seven roadblocks.

    [14:44] Roadblock #1 - Money
    • When we chase after money, we often ignore other essential pursuits.
    • It's natural to chase after money when you don’t have enough for your basic needs.
    • However, when you are above the threshold of basic need, you need to be careful not to think of wants as needs.
    • Don’t be trapped by looking at how much you earn and thinking that it’s the meaning of success.
    • Money is just a tool we need to survive.

    [22:16] Roadblock #2 - Stuff
    • Similar to money, many of us tie the meaning of success to stuff we own.
    • When we constantly compare ourselves to others, we may think we also need certain things to be successful.
    • Do not let your stuff own you.
    • Essentialism is a way of living where you question whether what you have is essential to what you want to achieve and accomplish.

    [26:18] Roadblock #3 - Titles
    • Be careful about tying your identity to titles because, at some point, you may lose them.
    • It’s also easy to fall into the trap of looking down on others when you tie the meaning of success to a title.
    • Remember that just as you have a purpose in this life, so does everyone else.

[28:18] “Do not believe that I, we, you are better than someone else because you've got that title beside your name. Because there are other people that may not have a title...but they were created and designed and they have an assignment, just like you do.” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:46] Roadblock #4 - Your Past and/or Your Future
    • While it's vital to learn from our past experiences, we should not let them rule us.
    • Do not be caught up by past glories so much that you lose sight of the present.
    • Similarly, do not keep wishing and living for the future because this takes you away from the present.
    • If you focus too much on the chase, you forget to live out what you need to live out today.

    [34:21] Roadblock #5 - Time
    • We live in a world where the hustle mindset is encouraged.
    • We need to be cautious about this since busyness isn’t necessarily the meaning of success.
    • It would be best to focus your time on what you were designed and created to do.
    • Don’t copy other people’s schedules. You need to find your rhythm and what works for you.
    • Having the time to think and be creative is also important.

[38:08] “Don't mimic other people's success. Don't copy other people. Find what works for you and evaluate your days, evaluate your rhythms, evaluate the way things work for you.” - Click Here to Tweet This[41:01] Roadblock #6 - People
    • There will be people who will push us towards or away from success. Be careful of who you surround yourself with.
    • People can also refer to your followers or those that you lead.
    • Be careful about measuring your success by how many people follow you.

    [44:02] Roadblock #7 - Comparison
    • Comparison is at the root of all the other roadblocks.
    • We live in a time when it's so easy to compare, especially with social media platforms. Constant comparisons will become damaging to you over time.
    • Comparison will make us think that we need to do things a certain way.
    • Remember that you need to walk your journey — not someone else’s.
    • Comparison will lead to stress and anxiety, which will take you away from the path you’re supposed to be going down.

[44:15] “The biggest barrier [to success]...is comparing yourself to someone else.” - Click Here to Tweet This[50:13] Learn to Listen
    • When we become busy attaching ourselves to the seven roadblocks, we become too stressed to hear anything else.
    • Not only will this stress take you away from your purpose, but it can also kill you, literally.
    • We all need to lead a life of freedom.
    • Become aware of the traps and roadblocks, and you’ll figure out how to overcome them.

[51:11] "Let's attempt to avoid those barriers of money, stuff, titles, past, and the future, time, people, and then the comparison trap, so that we don't go down and lead the life of anxiety and stress. Listen, we all need to be leading a life of freedom. We need to be moving towards what we were created to do.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?
