    3. Tim shares with us the things he learned about leadership, planning, and project management.

    • Episode Details

    Episode Highlights[02:06] Tim's Background
    • Tim has a degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech. Industrial engineers are usually the people in charge of creating systems and structures to do things more efficiently.
    • His work entails delegating tasks or making automated systems or processes in production. In today's world, systematizing methods are pre-eminent.
    • When Tim encounters teams or businesses struggling, he finds ways to create systems or processes to help them out.

[05:56] A Great Leader Creates Order Out of Chaos
    • Successful leaders can take chaotic situations and put them in order.
    • Insecure leaders inject chaos into situations to feed their egos and make them feel needed when things aren't going well.
    • A great leader is responsible—someone who doesn’t create more chaos, overcomplicate issues, and make things harder for their team.
    • Good stewards simplify and repair situations to create order by looking at the organization’s processes and systems.

“People that are successful in the leadership roles of organizations, teams, ministries, all those types of things, they have the ability to take chaotic situations and make order out of them.” - Click Here To Tweet This[10:50] Strategic Thinking
    • A leader must be able to answer the questions regarding their organization’s mission with clarity.
    • Clarity comes from the ability to think strategically.
    • Modern culture tends to overanalyze and overthink due to the overwhelming information available. It hinders people from making intelligent decisions.
    • Practice making quick decisions. Narrow down your options as best as you can, make a choice, and move on.

“One of our primary responsibilities is to attempt to provide clarity of the mission, whatever the mission statement is, whatever you're trying to accomplish, as a team, as a family, as an organization, as a ministry, is to clarify." - Click Here To Tweet This[19:09] Risk vs. Reward
    • When making a decision, ask yourself: What's the worst thing that can happen?
    • Perform trials, adjust, learn from the results, stop if necessary. Don't let decisions appear as if they are life-altering and will forever change everything.

    [20:53] Importance of Time
    • The lack of time is a significant challenge in modern society.
    • Due to the various devices we have, people do not allow themselves to sit down, reflect, and write their ideas.
    • The ability to focus is one of our biggest challenges today. It deters people from becoming great problem solvers.
    • Take some time to think, change your habits, and alter what you’re doing.

    [24:19] Looking Into the Future
    • Some people get anxious when they try to look into the future or beat themselves up because of their past mistakes. Creating smart plans will be a challenge if you operate with this mindset.
    • Great leaders have to anticipate the future; they are strategic thinkers and planners. Excellent leaders make preparations.
    • We use our past experiences to analyze and make decisions.

“Learn from yesterday, focus on today, and plan for tomorrow.” - Click Here To Tweet This[27:05] Planning and Project Management
    • Organizations need methods, structures, or systems in place to address and deal with challenges.
    • It’s easy to fall into using your emotions and getting confirmation bias when making decisions. To avoid this, you need to gather enough data about your organization and what is happening around you.
    • Get a wise counsel: Have a diverse set of people and personalities working with you to have as much knowledge as possible.
    • Get a good coach.
    • Learn from yesterday, focus on today, and plan for tomorrow.

    [36:14] On Possessions
    • Be stewards of the blessings God bestowed upon you.
    • Today's society has become great at manufacturing and marketing, so people accumulate as much stuff as they want.
    • Act as if everything you have, own, or control is a gift that you eventually need to return.
    • As a steward leader, you've been given a responsibility to lead. Look at it as a gift and be grateful. Nurture and take care of it.

“Everything you have, own, or control, act as if it’s a gift, and you’re going to have to return it.” - Click Here To Tweet This[42:44] Trust in Stewardship
    • A great analogy of the concept of stewardship is when you take an asset, and you move it into a trust. The trustee becomes responsible for the asset, but they don’t own it.
    • It’s also similar to Tim’s experience with house-sitting.
    • We don’t own the things we think we do.
    • You can't take your possessions with you when you leave this Earth.

"On returning the gift of leadership: “When you're done with it, make it better than when you received it—make it better than when you took over in that role, make it better than when you stepped in.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    • Be clear and concise as much as you can. Always attempt to say it with fewer words and don’t be repetitive if it’s not necessary.
    • Overcommunicating is better than undercommunicating. Emphasize all important points and be clear, but make sure you do not come off as repetitive.
    • Determine present barriers to improve communication. Take down walls that may be hindering effective communication.
    • Smile, listen, and call people by their name.

    • A bishop is like a leader of leaders. He oversees people, churches, and organizations.

[21:35] Verse 1: Desiring Good Work
    • If a man desires a position of leadership, he desires good work.
    • Do not desire leadership to have power over people.
    • It needs to be for proper reasons.

“The supernatural comes from belief in a heavenly loving Father that created you.” - Click Here To Tweet This[23:40] Verse 2: Blamelessness and Faithfulness
    • Blamelessness means you cannot have a lot of issues. You need to have your act together.
    • You need to be a faithful person, which includes faithfulness in marriage. If you cannot honor and love your spouse, wouldn’t it also be difficult for you to honor, love, and be a good steward in a role outside marriage?
    • Be vigilant—do not be lazy. Instead, be sober and focused.
    • Hospitality: Be welcoming to people.
    • Be apt to teach. You need good communication skills to share information and provide your wisdom to others.

    [28:14] Verse 3: Avoiding Over-Indulgence and Greed
    • A leader is not greedy and does not over-indulge.
    • Do not look at what you can gain from people.
    • Be patient, especially when dealing with other people. Do not be a brawler who’s fighting and arguing all the time.
    • Be contented, satisfied, and at peace with where you currently are.

[33:32] Verse 4: Learning Leadership at Home
    • We cannot be responsible for all the actions of our children.
    • However, we are responsible for raising them.
    • We need to be able to establish leadership at home.

“If someone cannot be honoring and loving to their spouse, to me, it’s going to be very difficult for them to be honoring and loving and be a good steward in a role outside of the marriage.” - Click Here To Tweet This[36:10] Verse 5: A Leader at Church
    • If you cannot take care of your own house, you cannot take care of the Church.
    • You have to learn to control bigger things.

“If we believe that we truly are placed in a position, and it’s a gift, then we have to also believe that we’re going to be equipped to perform in that area or in that role of responsibility.” - Click Here To Tweet This[36:40] Verse 6: Not a Novice
    • Placing people in leadership roles too soon causes pride.
    • People start thinking they are more than they are.
    • Worse, it can start an internal conflict when people tell them how great they are because of their role.
    • Learning leadership roles means being ready. It means being mindful.

    [39:03] Verse 7: Having a Good Report
    • You must have a good report with people. Otherwise, you will fall into the snare of the devil.
    • Treat everyone with respect and honor. This is a way of learning leadership.

“Love others as well as you love yourself. Do that. Attempt to do that in everything that you do, and you’ll be well on your way to being an excellent everyday leader.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

    • In this episode, you will learn that self-awareness is about understanding our strengths and weaknesses. As a result, we can be more effective and passionate.
    • Self-awareness also crosses over generations, in this segment. Today, young people have to gain more self-awareness because they continue to connect online, compare themselves to others, and deal with relationship struggles and mental health disorders.
    • Even though the past generation is not as tech-savvy as the new generation, as a result, they still need to gain self-awareness. Thus, they tend to be rigid and dogmatic. Older people tend to feel that they're always right.
    • Self-awareness is essential when making decisions, in essence.

Episode Highlights[05:46] The Definition of Leadership
    • For Tim, leadership is being a steward over the people, places, and things God has gifted you with.

“We need to really remind ourselves that leadership, influence, stewardship, it really does begin with us.” - Click Here To Tweet This[06:55] Attitude of a Leader in Their Effective Leadership
    • Being a steward in every setting entails the right attitude and mindset.
    • Attitude is a word that is overused in today’s time.
    • Tim describes an analogy of the kind of things stinky and dirty trash would attract.
    • A negative attitude unsurprisingly attracts bad people, whereas a positive attitude is uplifting and attracts positivity.
    • Do you want a bunch of you around? If you don’t, you need to make some adjustments and change.

“One of the biggest threats to effective influence or leadership is pride and selfishness.” - Click Here To Tweet This[10:27] Being Aware of Your Attitude
    • One of the best ways to identify your attitude is to sincerely ask someone else close to you.
    • Knowing your attitude is the first step toward change.
    • Your attitude can easily change if you have the foundation to do it.
    • Be aware of your purpose so that you can align your attitude with it.

[13:06] Actions of Leaders and Their Effective Leadership
    • Reflect deeply on your thoughts as these are seeds from which your actions come.
    • Likewise, you also need to think about your words, which should line up with your actions.
    • We should watch the things that come out of our mouth before we even speak.
    • Actions aren’t separate from your thoughts and words. They are a result of what we think and speak.

    [17:52] A Conducive Environment
    • As leaders, motivation is only a small part of what we can do.
    • Environment has a much bigger impact in terms of motivating people.
    • Most organizations typically create environments that repel people instead of attracting them.

    [18:55] Strengths and Weaknesses
    • Society dictates how we perceive our strengths and weaknesses, which relate to how we lead.
    • An overused strength can become a weakness.
    • If you have a strength that gives you energy, you have to embrace it.

    [24:02] A Leader’s Decision-Making for Effective Leadership
    • Leaders have to know how to make a firm decision.
    • There are things that need you to make a fast decision and move on.
    • Minimalism can help you reserve your decision-making for more important choices.
    • Manage your time well because if you don’t, someone else will.

[26:45] Responsibility and Accountability in Effective Leadership
    • It's disturbing to see fewer people in authority actually take responsibility for leading people.
    • Self-awareness is important to understand what having influence entails.
    • The biggest reason people don't have influence is pride and selfishness.
    • Humility is an extremely underrated trait of a leader.
    • Being a leader isn’t about you. It’s a gift from God.

“Don't beat yourself up over the past or tomorrow. Don't be thinking about the future so much that you really can't focus on today.” - Click Here To Tweet This[31:36] On Being Intentional
    • Being intentional means that you do things with extreme focus.
    • You have to be more focused on today than yesterday. Don’t beat yourself up for the past.
    • Don’t think about the future too much if you can’t even control the present.
    • Leadership is developed in isolation, where you are only surrounded by your thoughts.
    • Learn to manage yourself before you are in a position to influence others.

    [35:38] Letting Victim Mentality Go
    • Don’t get into the situation of blaming other people and being a victim.
    • We alone are responsible for our own thoughts, attitude, and actions.
    • The stench of victim mentality repels people.

“We alone are responsible for our attitude, our thoughts, and our actions because we know that victims allow the stench of blaming others to creep into their lives, and it repels people and therefore negatively influences others.” - Click Here To Tweet This[36:45] On Essentialism and Effective Leadership
    • Essentialism is the ability to determine what your priority is.
    • Look at the things most important to you.
    • Set priorities for yourself in every aspect of your life, be it work, relationships, friends, or even family.
    • If you don’t establish your priorities yourself, someone else will.

[37:56] For Effective Leadership, Be a Giver, Not a Taker
    • Our culture is structured in such a way that it encourages people to focus entirely on themselves.
    • Being a steward entails getting out of yourself and giving attention to other people. Influence is about others and not you.
    • Ego is a potent drug that permeates your soul and makes you self-centered.
    • If you don’t humble yourself, you will be humbled somehow. The heart of a leader is really that of a servant.
    • Establish trust with people, and don’t be a hypocrite. Always do the best you can to operate out of integrity.

"Ego starts creeping in, and it’s like yeast that just permeates all of your soul and your body, and it starts driving you. And ego is a drug that is as powerful as any drug out there. Do not become addicted to your pride or selfishness.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?
