“Final, definitive, absolute thoughts are becoming less and less common. Maybe again, it might be something related to age; it might be just that I don't know that I want to be that definitive.” - Click Here To Tweet This[10:33] The Consequences of the 2008 Financial Collapse
    • The 2008 financial collapse has affected Tim's family, spiritual, and marriage lives.
    • They went homeless for a season—which he will talk about next season—and filed for bankruptcy.
    • He still speaks with his investors and creditors and continues to repair the scars from the financial struggle they all experienced.

    • His family is now more comfortable and confident in facing other hardships. They now have greater spirituality and connection.
    • They learned how to avoid doing things to impress other people and accumulate excessive things. It allowed them to lead a simpler life.

“We really do not allow what other people think about us to dictate or rule us. And I don't want to say it so strongly as we don't really care. That's not the right way of saying it. But in many ways, that's kind of the way the attitude needs to be.” - Click Here To Tweet This[18:39] The Storehouse Principle & the Concept of Stewardship“Just because something's growing doesn't mean it's always going to grow.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • The Storehouse Principle: Just like what was taught in the Old Testament, set aside money for good deeds or for the Lord. It's different from having a savings account: a savings account is fear-based while having a storehouse is faith-based.
    • The Concept of Stewardship: Live as stewards rather than being owners. When you have a stewardship mindset, you take good care of the blessings you have and share it with your community. It gives people an area of humility.

    • The mentality of your family impacts your attitude and relationship toward money.
    • Tim had an above-average money mindset growing up.
    • He thought he should avoid being too good at what he does.
    • Your mindset is variable, and everyone has a different experience with money.
    • Some could have an abundance mindset, whereas some could have a scarcity mindset.

“The people that really think about money the most are the people that usually have the least.” - Click Here To Tweet This[1:11] Controlling Money
    • Reflect on whether you control money or it controls you.
    • Those who have the least money think about it the most.
    • We have to remember that money is just a tool to exchange goods and services. It doesn’t have magical powers.
    • Money sometimes becomes a measurement of our success.
    • Our culture wants us to spend, accumulate debt, and do it all over again.

    [15:45] Money & Relationships
    • Ask yourself how your money mindset could affect your relationship with family, friends, and your spouse.
    • A lot of people can’t help but compare themselves with the people surrounding them.
    • Your friends can affect your money mindset, as well as how you spend your money.
    • Money can also affect your business relationships, networks, and partners.
    • As written in Matthew, “You can’t serve two masters. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.”

    [18:45] Conflicts About Money
    • In business partnerships, people with different money mindsets could have conflict.
    • Although people sometimes fight over a lot of money, it’s more common to have conflict whenever money is tight.

    [21:25] Flawed Money Mindsets
    • Tim had always thought he could just make more money.

    • Tim experienced problems with his wife because she would hide money from him in case he spent it all on the business.
    • You could also sometimes think you have a special privilege to earn money and that you deserve more.
    • An entitlement to money can lead to a lack of motivation to save.

    • Tim used to pursue money to buy more and impress others. Now he lives in an RV with no real estate and low overhead costs.
    • Comparing your financial status is a very shallow and empty place to be in.
    • There is no long-lasting peace and happiness in comparing yourself with others.

    [34:17] Serving Two Masters
    • Despite having a relationship with God, Tim felt he still chased money and was attempting to serve both God and Mammon.

“I realized that I was attempting to serve both masters. I wanted to love the Lord part-time, and then I wanted to love money and chase after it part-time. And foundationally that is impossible to do.” - Click Here To Tweet This[39:03] Stewardship vs. Ownership
    • We are called to be stewards, not owners.
    • Society convinced us that we have to own the most possessions.
    • However, once we pass away, we can’t bring any of our things.
    • We only have the honor to take care of things while we live, not own them.
    • Being a steward rather than an owner brings more significance and fulfillment.

    [42:06] The Storehouse Principle
    • Putting aside a dollar every time it comes into your house is a practical application that can grow your financial picture.
    • Live off less than what money you have coming in.
    • The difference with the storehouse and savings is that you are putting it aside to take care of it.

It’s not yours, and it will only be spent when God instructs you to do so.

“Understand that there's more significance to being a steward and a caretaker of things than to actually own things.” - Click Here To Tweet This

    • He never went to church when he was studying and even had a few philosophy classes that basically declared there is no God.
    • God was way down the list of his priorities, which involved getting his degree, money, and women.

[07:42] Spiritual Start and Tim’s Wife
    • Tim’s wife had a father who was a preacher.
    • She always had a relationship with God at a young age and knew her priorities.
    • They talked about God one time, and she got serious because she couldn't marry someone who doesn't believe in God.
    • His spiritual philosophy is if you grow up nice and kind, you’d be okay.
    • Tim would go to church just to impress girls and even declared his faith with impure intentions.

“Prayer is a powerful thing. And many times, we don't understand, even when we don't know all the details of our prayer or what it means.” - Click Here To Tweet This[15:14] Involvement in Politics
    • Tim and his wife attended a Baptist church because, in Tim’s eyes, he could network, which was favorable for a political career.
    • He felt as if he was merely checking off his to-do list of going to church.
    • Meanwhile, his wife was strengthening her relationship with the Heavenly Father.

    [17:06] The Corporate Environment
    • Tim started working and wanted to become an entrepreneur to pursue money when his wife was pregnant.
    • He always wanted to impress other people and become rich.
    • Tim’s wife wrote in her journal and prayed to God that he would become the spiritual leader of their household.
    • She also lifted up in prayer their finances so she could stay home and take care of their child.
    • Prayer is a powerful thing, and you have to be prepared for what God has planned.

    [20:50] God in Business
    • They met someone in a mall that connected them to a multi-level marketing business called Amway, which ultimately helped their family.
    • Tim realized he was not that good, and he began to soften his heart.
    • In a way, the business was like a very spiritual community as you had to share your profit, and it was hard to be selfish.
    • He made a big decision to follow Christ in one of their Amway meetings.

“Business takes a lot of work. It is very challenging, and it begins to soften your heart. Because if you're one that's like me, who thinks you are really, really good at things, you can find out real quickly that you may not be that good.” - Click Here To Tweet This[26:44] The Prosperity Message
    • The prosperity message can be both positive and negative.
    • Tim experienced positive spiritual growth through the prosperity message, but it also made him think that working harder and performing better allowed his success.
    • Be wary of prosperity statements using God to justify serving the flesh.
    • God’s Kingdom doesn’t need any more funding.
    • There is no magic transfer of money from the wicked to the just.

    [30:45] God’s Blessings
    • After doing better financially, he thought God was blessing him for the good things he did.
    • He felt he had divinely inspired ideas and would only ask God for guidance during times when he encountered problems.
    • When the 2008 financial crisis occurred, he cried out to the Lord because he felt He had forsaken him.
    • God made Tim realize he was only running to Him when he had problems and didn't really have a solid relationship with Him.

“To me, I believe that He said, Tim, ‘I'm not an ATM machine. I want to have a relationship with you all the time, not just when you're in trouble.’” - Click Here To Tweet This[34:46] Lessons From the Crisis“He truly wanted me to have a relationship with him 24/7 at all times. It just helped me come to a realization that I needed to stop segmenting my life, that if I were to have this spiritual journey,  it needed to be 24/7.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • God didn’t want Tim to treat Him like an ATM machine and instead wanted him to have a relationship 24/7.
    • For entrepreneurs, blessings have very little to do with your own effort. It doesn’t mean you’re not a hard worker or smart—it simply means that we acknowledge Him.
    • In the lowest points of his life, he would just call to God and talk to Him.
    • Seek, Go, Create was his assignment from God.
    • God gave them seasons from miracles, to manna, to blessings.

“We feel as if we've moved from miracle to manna to blessing, and I'm not in any way trying to say that we've arrived, we know all the answers. I'm just sharing our story.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy This Podcast?

Episode Highlights[03:04] Back to the 2000s
    • The late ‘90s and early 2000s were a phenomenal time for business.
    • The 2000s were part of a bubble that burst; many things were happening at once.
    • Back then, Tim was consulting, doing training, and coaching on business leadership.
    • This bubble burst and had an impact on their business and caused a downturn in their personal finances.

“We knew that the economy was in trouble. We had clues; we knew it was there. We thought we had positioned ourselves to be diversified, but we didn't.” - Click Here To Tweet This[05:03] Building a Real Estate Company
    • After that period, he started looking at other ways to develop wealth and create income.
    • He began looking at investing in and building a real estate company.
    • He had a background in real estate because his family held some rental properties.
    • The company eventually grew fast, and their thought process was to build it to last.

[07:54] The Birth of Tim’s Coaching Business
    • Real estate always comes into play when people talk about getting wealthy and making money.
    • People started asking him questions when they saw his success.
    • Answering people’s questions and inquiries led to a coaching business.

    [10:30] Lead Generation Business
    • They spent a lot of money investing in ways to generate leads for both buying and selling real estate.
    • They realized their leads wanted to sell properties in geographic areas Tim did not want to do business. So, they started selling those leads.
    • It ended up as a lead generation business that grew to a nationwide business.

    [12:28] Learning Points
    • Tim and his family went on to stretch their lifestyle, which he now realized was wrong.
    • Their businesses were thriving, but they saw a lot of clues of the economy being in trouble during that time.

"Anytime that you begin throwing debt at a business that is sinking, that's a formula that's not good." - Click Here To Tweet This[18:21] The Impact of the 2008 Economic Crash
    • It was a massive crash. There was a debt crash, and the banks crashed. They thought the downturn would be shorter than it actually was.
    • For Tim, the wheels of their business started slowing down. They weren’t positioned well for that situation.
    • Throwing debt at a business that is sinking is never good.
    • He and his partners during that time were just trying to survive on their own.

    [22:21] Changing Their Lifestyle
    • What they found challenging was how slowly they changed their lifestyle until debt started piling up.
    • Tim’s proverb in business and life: “Thou shalt not fool thyself.” But he betrayed that because he thought he could still turn things around.
    • It was difficult for him to admit that he got into a situation where he didn’t know what to do.
    • Their income went down to nothing. Tim, fortunately, had help from his family and parents.

“I guess one thing I just want to say here is, don't feel any shame. Don't feel any condemnation because there are just times that those types of things happen.” - Click Here To Tweet This[27:44] Filing for Bankruptcy
    • Creditors and debtors started coming after them for mortgage and company debt.
    • In 2011, they filed for bankruptcy. The sole reason was to attempt to stall foreclosure.
    • He thought he would eventually make some money and pay it all back.
    • Going into the court with his wife for the bankruptcy proceedings was one of the lowest points of his life.

“It (bankruptcy) is shameful. It is disgraceful. I hate it that we had to go through it, but that is our story.” - Click Here To Tweet This[30:06] The Spiritual Side
    • He’s thankful that it showed a side of him as a father, husband, and a believer of God.

    [31:25] Being “Homeless”
    • They eventually moved toward foreclosure of their home because they were not making payments.
    • They began preparing for not living in their home and being “homeless.”
    • They put a few items in a storage unit and loaded up their 2002 Honda van they owned outright.
    • They then left home after they were served an eviction notice.
    • Since that time, they’ve been traveling even now that they have adequate financial resources.
