Seize Your Midlife episodes

  • Social media bites

I recorded this episode completely off the cuff because I feel like this topic is too pertinent not to cover. Even if you are one of the rare unicorns who have evaded social media, my guess is that undoubtedly your spouse or your kids are on it. Social media is affecting everything from our confidence to our kids’ anxiety, to the state of the world. It’s the powerful force we never saw coming.

I have a feeling this will be an episode that will have you nodding your head with a big ole’ Amen, but you let me know what you think. I’d love to hear from you.

PS: Can I Just say how grateful I am to be a child of the 80’s? Not sure I could have survived this digital age.

  • Married to a monster: An interview with Jennifer Moston

He was handsome. He was charming. He had a Phd. He was a schoolteacher. He was a dad. He wrote poems...and he was an absolute monster.

Jennifer Moston quickly fell head over heels with a man who on paper seemed perfect. He quickly showed her otherwise.

In today's episode Jennifer Moston shares her incredibly brave story of escaping her abusive husband and ultimately fighting to have him imprisoned. She details this hair-raising experience with complete vulnerability and honesty. As an educated, financially successful, career-driven woman, Jennifer is not the picture of domestic violence that you probably imagine. That is one of the many reasons that Jen is now on outspoken advocate for victims of domestic violence and a reminder that domestic violence can affect people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, all education levels, all races, and all genders.

Domestic violence can happen on the street with the biggest houses. It can happen to married couples, to same sex couples, and to couples that are dating.

Across the globe an estimated 736 million women, (one in three) have been subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetimes.

  • A quest just might be the cure for your midlife boredom

Is your life good, but you feel a gentle nudge for something more? Do you feel happy, but yet a nagging discontent?

I have heard from so many women like you that feel like they are on the hamster wheel and are frankly, just bored with the monotony of their lives.
When I heard Chris Guillebeau talk about quests, I had to buy his book the Happiness of Pursuit: Find the Quest That Will Bring Purpose to Your Life. Reading it made me absolutely believe that a quest can be the perfect cure for midlife boredom. A quest may even be the answer to discovering your next purpose.
In this episode I talk about bucket lists, bucket did lists, and of course...quests!
Take a listen to this episode and send me your lists.
I cannot wait to hear. xo, Bree

  • When unconventional is the perfect path: An interview with Ashley Quinto Powell

Hearing that a woman is climbing the corporate ladder while her husband stays home with the kids still makes people pause, speculate, and sometimes, judge. It's pretty surprising that in this day and age, that's still the case. In many, (I'd dare to say most), circles, it is. Ashley Quinto Powell was doing just that. She was rising the ranks in corporate job with her husband behind her, encouraging her every step of the way. And yet, the top? It felt a little lonely. Ashley felt that other moms just didn't get her. So, she set out to find her tribe. Ashley not only created a group of like-minded executive moms, she also wrote a book about it. Heck, she even gave a Ted Talk. Ashley is smart, witty, funny, and... unconventional. Her taking a unique path, despite what other people may say, gives other women permission to do the same. That's something we should all applaud.

  • Let’s get real about marriage

“And they lived happily ever after….”

We have been fed this fairy tale line since we were little girls. And you know what? It did all of us a huge disservice. While we found ourselves buried in bride magazines and wedding blogs, we got basically zero preparation or tools for marriage itself. If you haven’t already figured it out, there is no frog that turns into a prince and marriage is not all hearts and rainbows. Sharing every aspect of your life-the beautiful, the mundane, and the messy, with one person takes incredible dedication and work. And midlife divorce? It’s more than doubled since the 1990’s. On this episode, I am sharing what I have learned in nearly two decades of marriage, some tips and tools, as well as the recognition that marriage will always be a journey.

  • Mommy wine culture and the hobby that saved her spirit-An interview with Laura Jackson

"Mommy wine culture is not just pervasive, it's encouraged."

Laura Jackson was by all accounts and purposes exceling in every aspect of her life, and then a life altering night shined a spotlight on a problem she never admitted she had-drinking. We live in a country that celebrates wine-o'clock and 'mommy juice' so much that many women, many moms, are living publicly with undiagnosed drinking problems.

Laura's candid story is one that every woman in America should hear. And the hobby (turned career) that ignited her soul? It may surprise you.
