Fans of My Favorite Murder know Georgia and Karen for their foul mouths, true crime commentary and their kind hearts. 

Their book, Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered, is so much more than their tag line. When I read it, I expected it to be an extension of their podcast. Boy was I surprised when I found that three pages in I was hooked. In this book, the author writes a letter to her younger self to help her reframe her experiences and offer wisdom and encouragement after surviving a suicide attempt.

In this episode, Deana discusses how this book speaks to her own experience. She offers suggestions for how to support the families of those who struggle with suicidal ideations and how hope is not something that you wait for- it’s something you seek out.

In 1996, Elaine Aron published a book called The Highly Sensitive Person. In it she described a number of traits of which resonated with many who experience the world acutely. In my episode today, I interview a clinical social worker who specializes in working with highly sensitive people in order to help them embrace these traits and thrive in the world around them. Patricia Young, LCSW explores this book with me to examine what it is like to live in a world where you are often told that you think too much, you’re too dramatic, you’re too worried, and you can’t let things go. 

We talk about the importance of rest, why sensitivity is often misunderstood as being as introversion, and why the world needs more of Mr. Rogers.

One of the most useful books on my bookshelf is Thomas Phelan's 123 Magic. I first stumbled upon this book during my first years teaching middle schoolers, and I have found it's principles to be be true when working with kids of all ages. 

Learn about the importance of the No Talking, No Emotion Rule, and keep repeating to yourself "I am the adult... I am the adult..."  Eventually you will start to believe it, or at least will kids will realize that Mom might need some alone time....
