  • RSP #8 - Music is Not a Hobby with Thomas Erak | The Fall of Troy | Thomas Erak and The Shoreline
This week's, my guest is Thomas Erak of the post hardcore band, The Fall of Troy. What better guest to give to you, my listeners, for this week's show, right? It's rare that I get to talk to a real rock star.... what I mean by this is the fact that having a discussion with a very popular musician is usually loaded to the gills with banter about road life, rehearsals, sex, drugs, etc.... those things you always hear when they do any public interviews. It might be salacious, but you've heard it before and you can find it on Wikipedia as well. I was blessed to have a real discussion with the real guy, and nothing to get in the way of clarity, focus, and transparency.

Again, as I said above, it's so rare. Thomas gave me 2 hours of direct connection, talking about the difficulties of family, relationships, artistry, comedy and love.... yes, love. I hope you enjoy this priceless conversation and discover the artist beneath the veneer of stardom.  Thomas is mesmerizing.

3:08 Warnings from father. One of a kind. Authentic trances. Performing.

  • RSP #7 - Pissing off Barry Manilow with Tom Erak | Randy Meisner | Push
There are so many unknown musical legends out there, it's sick.  What is always troubling to me is that those same legends rarely get their due, whether it's on a record (I know, because it's happened to me numerous times) or live.

Session guys rarely get the financial reward or the fame.  It's a bummer, but I'm trying to change it a little, in my own small way. It's time for you to meet Tom Erak. A tremendous talent on the bass guitar, Tom tore across the musical landscape in the 1970's and 80's.

He's a stud on his axe and has played with the tops of the tops, on record and live in the studio. His son, Thomas Erak, has found fame as a guitarist for the mathcore band, Fall of Troy and is currently working with many amazing artists in his own right.

Long story short, Thomas wouldn't exist as a person or a player without the legend of his father. Tom Erak is a friend, and I consider him family.

3:25 It's Tom Erak, not Thomas.
5:55 Amy Winehouse. Where does brilliance come from? American Idol.
10:10 DNA is math and chords. Uniqueness.
13:45 Submarines and being smart. Pilots.
16:00 World class musicians. Mind blown.
    18:45 Tom is a badass.
    22:00 Understanding space in music.
    25:00 ADD
27:20 Fall of Troy. Kerrang and Alternative Press. Mars Volta.
28:00 The 3 rules of Show business.
34:00 Frank Sinatra. Michael Derosier. George Benson.
    36:00 Sexual Healing
    38:00 Tom's gotta pee.
    41:50 Barry Manilow
    55:15 John McEnroe. Universal.
57:00 Heart and John Paul Jones. Denny Carmasi. Jason Bonham.
59:45 Randy Meisner. The Eagles. Take it to the Limit.
1:05:00 Shoveljerk. Greg Hjort. Ben Smith, the drummer. Sessions and worries.
1:09:00 The US Navy music program. Reading music. Weddings and The Real Book.
1:14:00 Playing for audiences. Loving them with everything you got.
1:18:00 Finding the best of the best. Bullies.
1:20:00 Friends. It's all that matters.

  • RSP #5 - The Radio Business is Hell with Spike O'Neill (part 1) | CBS Radio
This week's podcast is a real get for me.  Due to knowing the "right people" (thanks to Scott Adams), I was able to snag a sit with the radio legend, Spike O'Neill.  Spike has been on the radio/TV/internet for 28+ years and he's amazing.  Quick witted, kind, insane, a tad weird, and more than a little bit dirty, Spike was a joy.

It's my hope I can spend more time with him in the near future, let alone actually convince him to have his own podcast, which HE SHOULD DO.  He's a great guest and a real dude.  I don't know if podcasts get better than this one.

  • RSR #3 - A Tribute to My Late Father, Bob Jones (1939-2016)
This week's podcast is about my father, the late Robert L Jones Sr. who departed this mortal coil at 7pm on August 2nd, 2016.   This podcast discusses his early years, the struggles with family, his older sister dying, his marriage, his years moving and working in towns with funny names, like Chehalis, Wenatchee, Tonasket, Yakima, and Olympia.  We visited Lake Chelan.  We almost died boating.  We almost died moving.  We almost died in a head on car accident outside of Yelm, Wa.  Basically, we almost died a lot. I also discuss his last 25 years living in Ocean Shores, Wa with my mother, and the toll life took on him. Lastly, it wasn't lost on me that the very thing my dad had always looked for to fill the hole in his life was always right in front of him.  He figured that out, and I couldn't be happier about that. I will miss him like no other, and I hope you enjoy this insight into the man that made me what I am.  I apologize for the salty dialogue in advance, and I truly thank you for listening to this memorial by yours truly.   I love you, Dad.  Thank you for making me, me. You are the definition of a Superhero.

"Even the Stars" was generously made available for use to the podcast by Rafe Pearlman and Jonathan Plum.  Even the Stars is the first track from the 2013 release, Dust & Gold (Pearlman, Plum)
