Imām Bukhārī: His Life & Character

Imām Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl al-Bukhārī is regarded as the greatest muḥaddith of his time, surpassing the rank of his contemporaries including his teachers. He authored many books during his life including the famous 'Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī' - a book which is regarded as being the most authentic book after the Qur'ān.

This talk will detail the life of Imām Bukhārī, the talent he showed from an early age and those who marvelled at his genius throughout his life. He was tested frequently by scholars to see if he lived up to his reputation and he displayed a level of piety which reflected his knowledge.

The unfortunate events leading up to his passing away are also detailed in this talk and a full sanad (chain of narration) is included at the end from Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq to the first ḥadīth of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.

The Prophet ﷺ referred to malice being a shaver of religion, meaning that it shaves away a person's deeds until their account is bare. When a person hates someone, it can lead them to attack the other verbally or physically because hatred does not remain settled. It is important that we make every effort to actively remove malice and hatred from our hearts before it consumes our good deeds.

After the Prophet ﷺ and his companions emigrated to Medina, Allah revealed laws with which Muslims must abide by so that they may live together peacefully. This Sūrat serves as a prime example of such intricate laws that detail not just how people should behave with one another, but how they should speak and think about each other.

This final lesson explains the sacrifice the Sahabah had to make in order to remain Muslim and how they attained a deep level of Iman. People may challenge the books of Hadith with regards to the history of the Prophet ﷺ being referred to as 'The Book of Expeditions', however if we look at our own history we will be quick to identify that the most notable events in history surround war.

This lesson concludes by summarising the objectives of this Surah; that we must create a harmonious social environment where everyone is safe from us - be it from our hand or our tongue. We are all born equal in the eyes of Allah, however it is through our actions and deeds that our rank is elevated in His Sight. We are prone, as human beings, to make mistakes to the extent that even the companions of the Messenger ﷺ had momentary lapses where they were lovingly chastised.

Allah emphasises in this Surah that our social interactions and behaviours are important, to the extent that we must never judge or think ill of another person. This Surah does much to identify our roll in society, what we should avoid and what we must do to ultimately attain the pleasure of Allah.

This lesson details the progression of faith of a believer. When a delegation of the Arab Bedouin came to Rasulullah ﷺ and professed Iman, Allah revealed verses regarding their claim and told them what should be said instead.

The inner faith of a believer cannot be quantified, however external submission is the first grade that every Muslim should display. Following external submission is internal belief and finally the highest grade is that of Ihsan; to worship Allah as though you see him or that He sees you.

This lesson also explains how a believer should obey Allah and His messenger ﷺ and what they should do to become true Muslims.

This Sūrat serves as a prime example of such intricate laws that detail not just how people should behave with one another, but how they should speak and think about each other.

This lesson begins by explaining the different rulings the pious Ulama would give based on strictness and concession, often practicing on the former and allowing others to act on the latter. This was because despite Allah granting concession in a ruling, they would act on its strictness in the hope of more reward. They would inform others to act on the concessions to make the religion easy for them to practice without hardship.

The lesson continues by discussing superiority in the Sight of Allah. Who is the noblest amongst us and do our different languages, colours and countries of origin have a bearing on this? The Sahabah asked the Prophet ﷺ about this and his answer was simple and beautiful.

In order to reform our tongues we must also reform our minds so that we are free from judging others and creating false thoughts about them. Purity of the mind will lead to purity of the tongue.

This lesson continues to discuss the importance of creating reconciliation between two disputing parties and how Muslims should work hard in maintaining true brotherhood among themselves. The keys to creating brotherhood are detailed in this lesson along with examples from the Qur'an and Hadith.

The remainder of this lesson focuses on the mockery of others in any shape or form. It is unanimously agreed that physical assault is illegal, but what gives us permission to cause grievous harm to others by using our tongue? Abusing others by the words we use is completely against the teachings of Islam. This lesson details how we should show compassion when we see others fail, rather than sit back and take the opportunity to mock them.

This lesson emphasises the duty that it is for every Muslim to create reconciliation between two disputing parties. If we are to idly sit by and spectate, then this action may haunt us when we are the ones who are involved in a dispute.

The best example of brotherhood we have is that of the Sahabah (May Allah be pleased with them). They partnered with each other and gave up years of fighting one another so that they may become true Muslims. This was such a brotherhood that even Allah boasts of it in the Qur'an. We must understand that brotherhood is not just a slogan where we refer to each other as 'brother' or 'sister in Islam' but rather it should be ingrained in our lives. This lecture does much to inform us on how to bring about true brotherhood.
