What are we jimmy rigging together in our lives to make things work? I recently started working out with a trainer, and David has mentioned that I have been tucking my hips pretty intensely for years! I was doing that, so my lower back wouldn't hurt. Turns out that my tucking solved one problem but put the "stress" elsewhere. It got me thinking about how often we do this kind of thing in our own lives. Let me answer that ALOT! We adapt and adopt unhealthy ways of coping.

Are you looking for life in dead-end places? This one stopped me in my tracks when I heard it during the Easter service at Soul City Church. I can remember a time when I was looking for love, connection, and fulfillment in all the wrong places. I thought my career could meet my EVERY need, and I was wrong. I now see that I was trying to get all of this from the wrong source. Once I started to give myself all the things I expected my career to give me, my career skyrocketed. It was never my career's job to meet all my needs. I blame society for this one. We are taught to seek joy, fulfillment, significance, love, community, and connection from our work! I am not saying that you shouldn't find these things in your work; I think we are sold this lie that if we do enough "work," you will find all of it! The shift for me is that I am not asking my work to be my everything, which has changed EVERYTHING.
MK joins me this week and shares how she chose to close her successful bridal planning business this last year. Like so many of us, she decided what she was going to be at such a young age that as she grew, things changed. The pandemic got us all thinking, but MK doesn't pin this move on the pandemic. We talk about how hung up people get on their professions but making $60,000 is $60,000 is $60,000 no matter what you do! Society has us worrying about the wrong things! She takes her love of business from this chapter and says that she just knew the business she had built was not her forever business. We could all stand to learn how to move on because MK has gracefully done that!

I have a confession; I spend way too much time scrolling rescue dogs and not enough time sitting with the loss of my beloved Capone. I have found my new drug of choice, scrolling for puppies. We all have losses in this life, and it is hard for many of us to sit with the magnitude of those losses. I know it is for me, so I want to shine a light on what happens in our lives after the last condolence card and after the meal train stops. It doesn't mean we have stopped grieving, and for many, it is when the real work begins. I am in it with you, struggling to sit with them now myself.

Are you an anytime business? Do you respond to emails at all hours? You may very well be running an anytime business and not even know it. I know I was for years! I no longer operate my business in this way, which has changed who my business serves. I could have shaken those boundary pushers much earlier had I known that by adjusting how I ran my business, it would self adjust who my business was for.

We are taught how to acquire things not what to do when we lose them. I would add a caveat to this, we don't know what to do once we acquire the things. We chase after possessions, titles, and attention but what do we do once we get them? Well, we need more, we don't find the feeling we are seeking in any of these external things. I have found for me that I have to take that energy that made the last dream possible and I have to channel it elsewhere.

I see this happen a lot... The frustrated stylist leaves the big commission salon and knows EVERYTHING they hated about where they worked. They use it as fuel to create their own thing, but I don't believe that knowing what you don't want is enough of a roadmap to where you want to be. It can be helpful, don't get me wrong, but it is not enough of a guide forward. What happens is that the stylist doesn't have the tools to know what is possible, so instead, they make slight adjustments to the model they didn't like. This works for a little while, but it won't meet the stylist's needs long term.

Can we please talk about Brené Brown for a moment? She is the queen of vulnerability, and I hang on to every word she says... I mean, these takeaways from her latest book are fire! Check out my biggest takeaways from Brené Brown's new book on meaningful connection! Are you dressing something up in humor that actually requires clarity and honesty? The broken-hearted are the bravest among; they dare to love. Language matters; it changes how we feel about ourselves. Better than is a few seconds from worthlessness. Attachment masquerades as love. There is usually more to the story!

How many of us have a story that we cling to that doesn't allow us to move forward? I know that what has happened in my life is never as bad as reliving it day in and day out is. I have found that we can move forward in the most beautiful way when we let go of the past pain and move on feeling empowered, but we have to be willing to drop the story!
