On this week’s episode, Nile Gardiner joins as we look at the British monarchy and ask the question — should Americans care about the royal family? We discuss the reign of Elizabeth II and how a continually strong monarchy under King Charles may be helpful to American national security. We also dissect Prince Harry and Meghan’s victimhood narrative and how the trend of demonizing tradition is pervasive and damaging to society.
Nile Gardiner is the director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation, and a leading authority on Brexit. Before joining Heritage, Dr. Gardiner served as a foreign policy aide to Lady Thatcher in her private office in London. He is a prominent expert on U.S.-British relations, U.S. foreign policy, and the transatlantic alliance and has testified several times before Congress on foreign policy issues. Finally, he frequently provides analysis of global events for U.S. and international television networks.

Mandy Gunasekara joins to discuss this month’s policy focus: The Painful Reality of Expensive Heat. It’s no coincidence that we picked this topic for February, typically the coldest month of the year. We look at the reasons you are paying more than ever to heat your home, why rolling brownouts and blackouts are more common, and why the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) trend ultimately increases global emissions. Finally, we discuss the launch of the new Center for Energy and Conservation.
Mandy Gunasekara is a senior policy analyst at Independent Women’s Forum. She is a veteran Republican climate and energy strategist, communicator, and environmental attorney with a well-earned reputation for delivering results. In 2020, she became a Principal at Section VII Strategies, a boutique energy, environmental, and tax policy consulting firm. Previously, Mandy served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she set and implemented environmental policy priorities for the Trump-Pence administration. Prior to that, Mandy was the Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation. In this role, Mandy was the chief architect of the Paris Accord withdrawal and the repeal of the Clean Power Plan.

On this week’s episode, Mark Regnerus joins She Thinks to help us explore the latest data showing the long-term decline in fertility, both in the U.S. and abroad. Some say that this is largely due to women choosing a career over motherhood, but does that paint the full picture? Mark and Beverly explore the many reasons why women aren’t having as many kids (or any kids at all) and what this means for them as well as for society at large.
Mark Regnerus is a professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin and a senior fellow at the Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture. The author of four books from Oxford University Press and more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, his research and scholarly essays have appeared in media outlets as diverse as Slate and First Things.

On this week’s episode, we address a big question—do you treat your pet like a human? And if so, are you doing more harm than good? Lura Forcum has done significant research in this area and joins the podcast to help us determine the unintended consequences of pet parents doting on their fur babies. We review the financial strain and debt many Americans incur, the marketing industry that’s making bank, the healthcare decisions that cause pain instead of alleviate suffering, and the numerous ways thinking your pet is just like you does more harm than good.
Lura Forcum is Director of Marketing Communications at State Policy Network. She is responsible for designing, planning, and implementing marketing and content strategies to communicate with SPN’s various audiences. A consumer psychologist and former marketing professor at Clemson University, her research examines why we treat non-humans like people but sometimes struggle to treat other people with humanity. She has also consulted with nonprofits and think tanks to increase their marketing effectiveness using insights from social psychology.

Patrice Onwuka is the director of the Center for Economic Opportunity at Independent Women’s Forum. Chad Robichaux joins the podcast this week as we examine the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 and consider how an independent rescue mission led to the successful evacuation of 17,000 people from the Taliban’s terrorist regime. Chad led this daring operation, and is the author of the book Saving Aziz: How the Mission to Help One Became a Calling to Rescue Thousands from the Taliban. We also discuss the resilience of Afghanistan and its people, his direct interaction with the Taliban, and what we can learn from this twenty-year war.
Chad Robichaux is a former Force Recon Marine and DOD Contractor with eight deployments to Afghanistan and is the co-founder of Save Our Allies, which evacuated more than 17,000 people from Afghanistan in 2021. After overcoming his personal battles with PTSD and nearly becoming a veteran suicide statistic, Chad founded the Mighty Oaks Foundation, a leading non-profit serving the active duty, military veteran and first responder communities with highly successful faith-based combat trauma and resiliency programs. Chad has become a go-to resource and a subject matter expert on faith-based solutions to PTSD, having advised the former presidential administration, Congress, the VA, the DOD, and was appointed to serve as the Chairman of a White House Veterans Coalition.

Naomi Schaefer Riley joins to discuss this month’s policy focus: Fixing Our Child Welfare System to Help America’s Most Vulnerable Kids. This is an important topic because data show that children increasingly lack a safe, permanent, and loving home in America. We discuss the specific reforms that need to come from many different sectors in this country and why the underpinning of any policy needs to focus on children’s safety instead of adults’ needs.
Naomi Schaefer Riley is a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, focusing on issues regarding child welfare, as well as a senior fellow at the Independent Women’s Forum. She also writes about parenting, higher education, religion, philanthropy, and culture.
She is a former columnist for the New York Post and a former Wall Street Journal editor and writer, as well as the author of seven books, including, most recently, “No Way to Treat a Child: How the Foster Care System, Family Courts, and Racial Activists Are Wrecking Young Lives,” (Bombardier, 2021). Ms. Riley’s writings have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the LA Times, and the Washington Post, among other publications. She appears regularly on FoxNews and FoxBusiness and CNBC. She has also appeared on Q&A with Brian Lamb as well as the Today Show.

On this week’s episode, we focus on the efforts by Independent Women’s Forum and others to protect female-only athletics. Increasingly, we watch as female athletes around the country are forced to compete against boys and men, and so today we have a former D1 athlete joining us to talk about what it means for women’s participation and women’s records if we do not have equal opportunities.
Megan Kaltenbach Burke is a Colorado resident, mother to two daughters, and Independent Women’s Network chapter leader in Denver. Megan was a standout track performer in high school, winning 15 Class 5A State Championships, and her efforts earned her a scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she won two NCAA Championships, set the American Record, and earned her degree in Journalism. Megan has been an outspoken advocate against masking our children during the COVID pandemic and fighting for fairness in women’s sports.
