On this week’s episode, Miles Yu joins to discuss the ongoing tension in China and the rise of the Chinese protestor. We talk about reasons why people are putting their lives on the line to defy the China regime: is it all about the zero-COVID policies instituted by President Xi Jinping? We also focus on President Biden and his administration’s response to the Chinese protestor. Has the narrative, or lack thereof, been a help or a hindrance? What does effective diplomacy look like?
Miles Yu is a senior fellow and director of the China Center at Hudson Institute and co-host of its new China Insider podcast. He is also a professor of East Asia and military and naval history at the United States Naval Academy. During the Trump administration, he served as the China policy adviser to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In that capacity, he advised the secretary on all China-related issues, helped overhaul U.S. policy toward China, and participated in key U.S. government interagency deliberations on major policy and government actions with regard to China and other East Asian countries.

Lindsey Stroud joins the podcast to discuss November’s Policy Focus: E-Cigarettes and Public Health. Tragically, 480,000 Americans die each year from smoking-related diseases and illnesses. Many want to stop but struggle to do so and instead have transitioned from combustible cigarette use to safer e-cigarettes and vaping products. Despite the good news of harm reduction products, there is a large effort by health organizations and lawmakers to eliminate their use. In this episode, we’ll look at the data behind e-cigarettes and vaping products, the regulations imposed on them, and the best policies and products to reduce tobacco harm, especially among young people.
Lindsey Stroud is a visiting fellow at Independent Women’s Forum. She is the director of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance’s (TPA) Consumer Center, which provides data and analysis to inform and assist policymakers when addressing consumer products. Stroud’s main focus is on providing up-to-date information on adult access to goods including alcohol, tobacco, and vapor products, as well as regulatory policies that affect adult access to other consumer products. In her role, Stroud manages the team at the Consumer Center and has testified before state and international lawmakers, led coalition efforts, authored state analyses, and hosts a monthly webinar featuring international guests.

On this week’s episode, we discuss a disturbing trend in America: the rise of loneliness, which Merriam-Webster defines as “being without company, cut off from others; sadness from being alone.” Some blame social media and the COVID pandemic as drivers of the loneliness epidemic, but are they the only causes? Daniel Cox joins to discuss how marriage and family formation play a role in a person’s ability to connect and why Gen Z is the loneliest of all generations. Finally, we discuss what you can do if you too identify as lonely.
Daniel Cox is the director of the Survey Center on American Life and a research fellow in polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he specializes in survey research, politics, youth culture and identity, and religion. Before joining AEI, he was the research director at PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute), which he co-founded and where he led the organization’s qualitative and quantitative research program. Dr. Cox’s work is frequently featured in the popular press, including in The Atlantic, CNN, and The Washington Post. He is a contributor to FiveThirtyEight and Business Insider.

Nick Deiuliis joins the podcast this week to discuss the delicate balance of transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy. How far has innovation taken us? And how do we factor in national security as well as environmental concerns? We also consider how the Appalachian region has been an enormous boon for the energy space.
Nick Deiuliis is a chemical engineer, attorney, and business executive, and is the Director and the Chief Executive Officer of CNX Resources Corporation. During a career spanning 30 years, he served as the CEO or Chairman of the Board of five public energy companies. During that time, Nick has been on the front lines of the war being waged by elites against the working men and women of Appalachia, the “doers” of the American economy, and the free-thinking individual.
