  • Showing Up for Others & Slinging Hope

Erika Righter is a social worker-turned small business owner, consultant, community advocate, and Mom. Her work in the social services field included the foster care system, rural social work, and programs serving low income older adults. In 2012, Erika founded Hope Tank, a community space and gift store that gives back in Denver. Hope Tank uses retail to connect customers to justice-focused organizations, artists, micro businesses, and groups doing important work in our community. That Hope Lady Consulting works with businesses, nonprofits, and leaders to identify their values, put them into action, and articulate them to their clients, customers, donors, and investors. In response to constant calls for introductions to BIPOC, LGBTQ, and women-owned businesses, in 2017 Erika started the Go Big For Small Biz Inclusive Guide- a searchable directory as well as a growing community of micro businesses owners who use mutual aid to fill in the gaps for resources available to them. She views the micro business community as an integral part of building and sustaining healthy communities, and devotes a large part of her efforts towards uplifting their contributions.

  • Representing the People

In this episode, I get to dive into the current state of politics with State Rep. Leslie Herod. This is definitely one to listen to!

Representative Leslie Herod was elected in 2016 as the first LGBTQ African American in the Colorado General Assembly. Since then, she has passed 150 bills, addressing criminal justice reform, mental health, addiction, youth homelessness, and civil rights protections.

Some of her signature work includes:

    - Ending cash bail for minor offenses

    - De-felonizing drug possession

    - Giving every Colorado newborn a $100 college kickstarter account

    - Providing free menstrual hygiene products to inmates in Colorado’s prisons and jails

    - Passing a comprehensive police accountability bill following the highly public murder of George Floyd, and the nationwide movement that followed

In addition to winning reelection in 2018, Herod championed a ballot initiative - Caring for Denver - that raises $35 million annually for mental health and substance abuse treatment and services for children and adults. Herod serves as Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and is a member of the powerful Joint Budget Committee.
