Showing Up To Life episodes

  • EP 588: Our Storytelling Mind + Trauma Strategy vs Essence

In today’s first segment, I talk about the storytelling mind.

Simply put, this describes the way our minds will create narratives to explain that which we do not understand.

Through practice, we can become more comfortable with not knowing and render this storytelling mind powerless over our moment-to-moment experience.

In the second segment today, I talk about the way practice leads to the awareness of when we might be operating from our trauma strategy as opposed to operating from our true, authentic, essence.

    I hope you enjoy!

If you feel like you want to get some support in doing these practices, there’s a link below to schedule a call with me so I can guide you to the program that’s right for you!

If you would like to learn more about these practices I talk about, I encourage you to get in touch.

Some people are well capable of developing these skills on their own, but most of us need a little guidance, motivation, and accountability in order to stick with it long enough for the skills to take root as habits.

If you feel like you could use some coaching, your first session is on me.

In fact, I’ve already bought the first session for you!

All you have to do is claim it.

  • EP 587: Why Mindfulness + How Mindfulness

Today, we’re going back to the basics!

In today’s first segment, I review some of the amazing benefits derived from the simple, sustained practice of mindfulness.

As a super special treat, I share part of a lesson from a course I’m taking in Interpersonal Neurobiology with Dr. Dan Siegel!

In today’s second segment, I discuss the How of mindfulness.

I review the three main types of practice - formal, informal, and semi-formal - and the ways in which each one develops open awareness, focused attention, and kind intention (also a tip of my hat to Dr. Siegel for this description.)

I hope you enjoy it all!

  • Ep 586: Attention, Harvard, Gorilla + Seeing our Motivation Through Self Awareness

In today’s first segment, I share a very fascinating - and kinda funny - story about an experiment done with a group of Harvard students.

Most of us believe we’re paying attention to our surroundings, but this video suggests a different view.

And it tells us a lot about the importance of attention.

Better yet, attention is a skill. And like any other skill you’ve ever developed, it can be trained through practice.

In the second segment today, I talk about how self-awareness allows us to see and discern between the emotions that just get us worked up for nothing and the emotions that motivate us toward beneficial action.

    I hope you enjoy!

If you would like to learn more about these practices I talk about, I encourage you to get in touch.

  • EP 585: Cycles, Self Awareness, and Self Compassion + What is Impacting Your Body Right Now?

I really hope you enjoy today’s episode! Both segments have a special little treat for you!

The overlying message today is all about bringing a kind and compassionate attitude to our moment-to-moment experience so we can deepen our self-awareness and, ultimately, find the source of our suffering.

But without the self-compassion, the self-awareness can only go so far!

If you would like to learn more about these practices I talk about, I encourage you to get in touch.

Some people are well capable of developing these skills on their own, but most of us need a little guidance, motivation, and accountability in order to stick with it long enough for the skills to take root as habits.

  • EP 584: The Lake Wobegon Effect + The Objectivity of Self Awareness

Garrison Keillor describes the fictional Lake Wobegon as a place where ‘All the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.’

Psychologists have coined the phrase ‘The Lake Wobegon Effect’ to describe the way in which humans tend to overestimate their abilities and characteristics against the rest of society.

In short, we all think we’re above average.

But because it is impossible for all of us to be above average, we wind up knocking each other down in what psychologists call ‘Downward Social Comparison.’

In the first segment of today’s episode, I talk about the harm that all this negativity does to us and how to use the practice of compassion to overcome these unwanted impacts.

In segment two, I discuss how the deepening of self-awareness offers us the ability to see the activity of our minds - thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations - as though we’re watching it all happen on a tv screen.

Even better, it’s like we’re holding the remote control and always have the ability to simply pause and come back to a regulated place.

    I hope you enjoy!

  • EP 583: Learning to Surf + Learning From our Anger

In segment one today, I discuss the beautiful quote from Jon Kabat-Zinn: ‘You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.’

I show you how this quote teaches us to accept all the ups and downs of life with the graceful and loving awareness of mindfulness.

And I also explain that we need to hold our flaws and failures in the same kind of kindness.

In the second segment, I tell a brief personal story about sitting with my anger and what I learned from it.

I hope you enjoy the episode!!!

  • EP 582: Parenting Through CPTSD + Managing Anger Through Mindfulness and Self Compassion

In segment one of today’s episode, I talk about one of the hardest parts of my own journey through the healing of my trauma: reflecting on my own parenting before I started to heal.

For most of us, becoming a parent can be the catalyst for change and healing from our own trauma and cptsd.

By definition, this means that we were parents before we started the healing journey.

By definition, this means that we most likely repeated patterns of trauma - perhaps even the abuse and neglect that hurt us so much as children - with our kids.

The shame and guilt involved with this can be crushing.

And today I tell you how mindfulness and self-compassion can help so much.

In segment two, I explore another key aspect and symptom of cptsd: the propensity we have toward angry outbursts.

As I mention, it is hard to overstate the negative and dangerous impact chronic anger has on our bodies, not to mention the havoc it wreaks on our relationships!

But when we can hold our anger and resentment in the loving awareness of mindfulness, we come to understand that it is an act of self-compassion to forgive those who are the object of our anger.

This realization can be life-changing and I hope today’s episode helps you to arrive at it:

  • EP 581: ALL Emotions are Beneficial + How Positivity Becomes Toxic

Welcome to the new, two-segment format!!!

In today’s first segment, I talk about the nature of positive emotions and how there is some truth to the concept that positive emotions will attract more positive things into your life.

In the second segment, I talk about how positivity becomes toxic. (Hint: it’s all about how we process negative emotions without judgment)

Both segments are included in one video. The first segment is just about 15 minutes long.

The podcast has two segments within the same episode.

Please let me know how you like this new format!!!

If you would like to learn more about these practices I talk about, I encourage you to get in touch.

  • EP 580: Seeing our Trauma Response Through Self Compassion

No matter how long we practice or how much we grow, the trauma responses we’ve developed can be triggered at any given moment.

And before I go any further, it’s vital to recognize that these trauma responses, from the addictions to the automatic people-pleasing I discuss in one of today’s segments, are not your flaws.

In fact, it’s just the opposite!

The trauma responses we’ve created and developed are our own genius means of survival.

So you should be proud of your trauma responses!!!

But you should hold these responses in your loving self-awareness so that you can see when they’re not serving you any longer.

Check out today’s episode for more details:

I want to remind you that I offer many different forms of coaching support to help you develop this vital self-awareness and self-compassion.

  • EP 579: On Empathy and Expectation

Today, I’m trying something a little different!

I broke today’s episode into two segments.

In the first segment, I talk about the fact that today is Suicide Prevention Day and how mindfulness and compassion can empower you to help someone else - or maybe you! - to see another option.

And in the second segment, I talk about how we can turn natural and automatic anticipation into forced and emotional expectation and what happens when we do.

    Watch/Listen here:

If you or someone in your life has expressed that suicide seems to be the answer, please know that there are always other options that you may not be able to see right now. But the best thing you can do is to first talk to someone. You can talk to me by replying to this email ([email protected] - I’ll reply with my personal phone number) or call this number to speak with a caring and compassionate person who would love to speak with you: 800-273-8255… https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/
