‘Everything is dead’ – reports come in of a major ecocide event, after

rivers are poisoned. Ukrainian officials in Chernihiv have told

residents not to swim in the Desna River after a toxic spill last month.

Artem Mazhulin in Slabyn, Ukraine, from the UK’s Guardian newspaper.

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s paying attention, that

Russia is suspected of deliberately leaking chemical waste into rivers.

This has had deadly consequences already for wildlife within the waters

and surrounding ecosystems.

Hundreds of fish, including roach, pike, carp and other species, have

washed up on the Desna River’s willow-fringed banks.

“Everything is dead, starting from the tiniest minnow to the biggest

catfish,” explains Serhiy Kraskov, mayor of the village of Slabyn,

located in Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region.
