It should not come as a surprise that this next section of Scripture is foundational for many of the things we will come to understand in the New Testament. If we don't view these stories in light of the NT's profound spiritual truths, we will miss their depth and beauty. God promised Abraham a son, and though Abraham believed God, he thought he should help a little. After all, Abraham and Sarah were apparently unable to bear children. So Abraham slept with his wife's servant and bore a son through her. Ishmael was born when Abraham was 86 years old. Ishmael was not the son God promised but was the result of Abraham's work and effort. Later in the Scripture, Ishmael will be called the "son of flesh." In this context, the "son of flesh" is set as a juxtaposition to the "son of promise" (or the work of God). So then we will see that the "flesh" is analogous to our work, and "promise" is analogous to God's work. There is much more to say on this matter, and we will do so soon. One of the more essential things in this section is the discussion on circumcision. Again, this is prior to the Law of Moses by more than 500 years....

Genesis 15:6 may be the most significant verse of Scripture we've covered this far, excluding the two that reference the coming of Jesus early on. "He [Abraham] believed the LORD, and God counted it to him as righteousness." Abraham's faith in God's promise resulted in his being declared "righteous." This verse was not written for Abraham's benefit alone but for all of us who "believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord." It is vital then that we know and understand neither our righteousness nor the righteousness of any other soul who would walk upon this earth is a matter of works but always one of faith. We can not under any circumstance exert an effort equal to the task of righteousness, nor could we, having once been imparted righteousness by faith, maintain it by our efforts. Righteousness is imparted and, therefore, upheld by faith and faith alone. No other truth, apart from the person and work of Jesus, has more of a bearing on the writing of the New Testament. As I pointed out yesterday, only those of faith are children of Abraham; only those of faith belong to the nation of Abraham. You will remember Jesus' words in John 8 that if the Pharisees had been children of Abraham, they would have known and loved Jesus our Lord. Furthermore, Jesus calls Zacchaeus a "son of Abraham," signifying the faith Zacchaeus had placed in Jesus. And we can't forget the woman bent in half for 18 years by an evil spirit. And why was Christ compelled to help her? Because she was "a daughter of Abraham." Paul makes it abundantly clear that the New Covenant's view of the "children of Abraham" is that they are all people of faith...

The importance of Abram (henceforth Abraham) can't be overstated. He is the father of all who put faith in God as the provider of salvation. My temptation in this section is to be long-winded, but I know there will be future opportunities for conversations regarding salvation, righteousness, and faith, so I'll do my best to be succinct. Abraham, when called by God, was a pagan idol worshipper. But God selected Abraham to be the patriarch of the nation of Israel and the spiritual father to all people of faith. Genesis 12:2-3 says, "I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse. In you, all the families of the earth will be blessed." Western Christianity has long taken this blessing to be one of practical and tangible things. The general line of thought has been, "If we are allies to Israel, then God will bless us; If we are enemies to Israel, then God will curse us." The problem with such a view is that it regards the earthly blessing as a more significant thing than the spiritual blessing. The last phrase of verse three, "and in you, all the families (nations) of the earth will be blessed," is a commentary on salvation and not on physical earthly blessings. Paul clarifies the meaning of this statement for us in Galatians, where he says, "And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, 'In you shall all the nations be blessed.' So then, those of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith." We see then that these words in Genesis 12:3, and therefore the words dealing with blessings and curses, have more to do with the spiritual truth of faith than the national perspective of wealth and wellbeing. As students of the Bible, we are often guilty of casting aside the profound spiritual truth in favor of the more tangible cultural implications. We see the promise of "a great nation" has less to do with the nation of Israel and more to do with the nation of faith, those people who have put their confidence in God as the source of salvation so that "in Christ Jesus, the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles."...

The biggest story of Genesis 3 has to be the story of Jesus. Of course, we'd say that's the case for the Bible as a whole, but in this chapter, we see the first clear indication of Jesus and the second. But before we get to that, I think it is important to consider a few small things first. First, the serpent mentioned here is the Devil. Though Genesis is unclear about this issue, the rest of the Bible makes it obvious. We notice in Revelation 12:9 that the terms "That serpent of old," "The Devil," and "Satan" are all used in reference to one person. The same names repeat in Revelation 20:2. Second, the Devil makes a promise to Eve that she will become "like" God. This is deception at its finest since humanity was already made in the "image and likeness of God" in Genesis 1. But the Devil promises additional wisdom and knowledge. It's a fool's errand since the things of God can not be discerned or learned by any means other than through the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, we who have put faith in Christ find we have been made new and are now in the likeness of God, bearing his righteousness and holiness through faith. Third, some people equate the characteristics of the tree in verse six with sinful behavior outlined in 1 John 2:16. People assume "good for food, a delight to the eyes, and desired to make one wise" is synonymous with the sinful behaviors of "the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life." I've heard more than one sermon that sought to marry these two texts. The problem is the Bible does not make this correlation. In fact, the first two things Eve notes about the tree are the very things God created the tree to be in Genesis 2:9.....

If you grew up in church, the story of Cain and Abel was one of the first ones you were taught, but I think the depth of this story was left off our coloring pages and felt board Sunday school lessons. The first question we must ask is, "Why did the Lord have no regard for Cain's offering?" I was always told it was because Cain did not give his best or offered the wrong type of sacrifice. At this point, we are more than 2500 years away from God's law on the type and method of sacrifices pleasing to him. From the creation of Adam to the flood in Genesis 7, we have at least 1656 years. From the flood to Abram, another 292 years passed. From Abram to Isaac 100 years. From Isaac to Jacob, 60 years. Jacob enters Egypt when he is 130 years old, and the Israelites will live in Egypt for 430 years before they leave and receive the law. So it could not be that Cain violated the rules of sacrifice, for there weren't any. The rest of the Bible gives us clues as to why God may hate a sacrifice. We see in Isaiah 1 and Amos 5 that God's chief concern was the giver's heart. In fact, in each of these texts, the Israelites offered the correct type of sacrifice and were still rejected by God since the heart of the one offering the sacrifice was far from God. This seems to ring true when John condemns Cain's deeds as evil in 1 John 3...

Episode two has so many beautiful things for us to consider, but three stand out. We have introduced, to us, the Sabbath rest, the Tree of Life, and the marriage covenant. All three of these things will reach through the pages of the Bible and land squarely on the person and work of Jesus.
When we consider the Sabbath rest, especially its introduction here in Genesis two, it will help us to look at Hebrews chapters three and four. In these two chapters, we see the author discussing the people of God's inability to enter the Promised Land of Canaan. They cannot enter the "rest" because of disobedience, disbelief, and lack of faith. But the author notes that a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God. If Joshua had given God's people rest when he led them into the Promised Land, then David would not have written about another "rest" in Psalm 95. There is still a rest available to the people of the world today. We have been invited to rest from all our works (for salvation) as God also rested from all his works on the seventh day. If those who hear the good news of Jesus proclaimed to them would believe the truth of the message by faith, they will enter the rest of God and finally be free from their works as a standard of righteousness. It makes a lot more sense when you consider that Hebrews was written to Jews who were using the works of the Law as the standard for righteousness rather than faith in the finished work of God through Christ. There is doubtless much more to say on this topic, but I can't turn this blog post into a book at this time....

GOD THE CREATOR:
Genesis One is a beautiful chapter, but we Christians might wonder why the Bible doesn't start with the story of Jesus. Why aren't the first pages of our journey the records of John or the story of the crucifixion? The answer is more than just one of history and tradition. In this first chapter of the Scripture, we meet God, the Creator. This is not just a story told by feeble-minded followers, not just an analogy to help someone grasp impossible thoughts on creation. This is the story of God, unfolding for us over 1189 chapters and about 31,200 verses. Unless we accept God as the creator, how can we ever be expected to accept him as merciful, loving, just, righteous, or holy? If God is not the creator, why would we expect him to be able to save humankind, the pinnacle of creation? So we meet God as creator, and we believe it, and in so doing, we come to the place where we acknowledge him as the source and standard of all truth. We are not the creator; therefore, we can not be the standard for what we hold as true.
So God created the heavens, earth, and seas. He filled them for his glory. He created humanity in his image and commanded them to "fill the earth." It is doubtful this command was about population alone. Indeed, he had in mind his image carried throughout all of creation. As the creator, he can also be considered trustworthy as king and savior.
Creation is broken down into six days, with days four through six filling days one through three. On day one, God created light; on day four, he filled it with the sun, moon, and stars. On day two, he made the sky and the waters above and below were separated from one another. Day five fills these spaces with the birds and fish. Day three sees the creation of the seas, land masses, and plants. God filled them up on day six with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air.....

The flood in the days of Noah is one of the most iconic Bible stories. One thing to note from Chapter 5 of Genesis is Methuselah's name can mean a few different things, but one of the interpretations of his name is "he dies. It happens." It is significant to see the flood coincides with the death of Methuselah. I have always wondered if he died during the flood, but the Bible is silent on that issue. In Genesis chapters 6-9, we hear the account of the flood. It grieved God that he made men on the earth. "My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh; his days shall be 120 years." People occasionally argue that God meant humankind would not live past 120 years of age from that point forward. This is not the meaning of the text, as many people, including Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, all lived longer than 120 years. It is more likely that God has numbered the years of humanity on the earth at 120 years left before he brings the flood. God is setting a timer until the day the flood would ravage the earth. Others will suggest it was a period specified by God because that's how long it would take Noah to build the ark. This is also not supported by the text, and the text actually contradicts this idea. Noah was 600 years old when the flood came to the earth. Noah was about 500 years old when he had his sons, yet when God told Noah about the coming judgment in flood form, he gave instructions to Noah and Noah's sons, along with their wives. So Noah and his sons built the ark in less than 100 years, and since they were already grown and married, it is probably closer to 50-60 years or less to build the ark. But that's just speculation...
