Leviticus is exhausting. These 27 chapters are overwhelming, and a part of me believes that might just be the point. The book starts with a detailed list of offerings and how they should be offered. The Hebrew people needed to bring their burnt offerings, grain, peace, sin, and guilt offerings. There are tedious chapters over which foods can be eaten and those to be avoided. Pages are dedicated to methods for cleansing a leper and a house with mold. If you were trying to read through the Bible cover to cover, you would likely begin to stall in Leviticus...

With this post, we bring Exodus to a close, though we will certainly come back to it as we visit various texts from both the Old and New Testaments. I have found it helpful in my studies and in the notes I make in my Bibles to keep track of the timeline of the Exodus (and later the captivity) by jotting down the day, month, and year when those details are given to me. For example, we know the people left Egypt on the fifteenth day of the first month in the first year of their exodus or 15-1-1. That occurred for us in Exodus 12. Now, here we are in Exodus 40 on the first day of the first month in the second year, or 1-1-2. That means that two weeks less than one year has passed in 28 chapters. That may come as a surprise, especially if you read all the way through the measurements of the tabernacle twice in Exodus. It probably feels as though a decade has passed, but it has not. By the way, understanding the timeline of the Bible goes a long way to helping to understand the different narratives found therein...

Once again, I have to limit my thoughts on this video, or you'd be here all day. I'll speak to two different ideas. First, I love how God reintroduces himself to Moses in this text, "the LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty." It isn't that I'm particularly drawn to the language of it as much as I am intrigued by its usage throughout the Bible...

How fantastic is today's chapter and study? This is just over four months into the Exodus. It took three months to get to this mountain, plus forty days of Moses on the mountain. Months were thirty days each, so about four months and ten days have passed, give or take a bit. The people, impatiently waiting for Moses, decide they need a new God to follow. This text strikes us as slightly shocking, depending on how it was taught to us. But since we've paid attention to their grumbling, we aren't really all that surprised by their idolatry. We're even less surprised when we consider Ezekiel 20, which lets us know that this horde of Hebrews carried all the idols of Egypt with them when they left four months earlier. They were idolaters from day one and would stay the course of idolatry through their forty-year journey and beyond...

The Sabbath is one of the most important concepts in the Bible, and sadly, it keeps a lot of Christians trapped in the works of the Law. I've already pointed out, but it bears repeating, that the Sabbath was a weekly observance for the Hebrew people where they refrained from all manner of work. Even during the forty years in the wilderness, they were not given manna on the Sabbath to keep them from working for their daily bread. There was also a Sabbath year every seventh year where the people were forbidden from sowing or harvesting any crops. Every fiftieth year was a Sabbath year called the Year of Jubilee. Again, they were banned from planting or harvesting, but they were also required to return debts, land, and houses and set free servants...

Here is the little bit I know. I am sure the tabernacle/tent of meeting is a physical representation of the true spiritual form of heavenly things. We know this because God's warning to Moses in Exodus 25 and the author of Hebrew bringing it full circle for us in his writing. I can't possibly tell you what all the elements of the tabernacle stand for in terms of heaven. Some are obvious. The Holy of Holies and the Ark of the Covenant represent the very presence of God. The veil is a picture of the body of Christ torn for us and by which we enter God's presence. The lamp seems to be closely linked with the seven spirits of the Lord. Do I have any idea what that means? No.

I had to pick and choose what to cover today because I could go on and on about various parts of our reading. Thankfully, we get to return to several of these things in Leviticus. I will tell you the first six verses of Exodus 21 are some of my favorite Bible verses. I love the imagery that you could volunteer yourself to a kind master for the duration of your life. I know that the text relates to a method of provision for the poor Hebrews, but the fact that this is also referenced as a picture of Christ is beautiful to me. Let me explain. A Hebrew man, serving a fellow Hebrew, could decide to remain a servant at the end of his six years of service. If he believed his master to be good and he enjoyed the blessing of the master, he would go before the religious leaders and swear allegiance to his master for life. They would pierce through the servant's ear with an awl. This mark on his body would be a visible sign to all of his voluntary service to the master...
