We left Rahab behind in Jericho yesterday, but today, we bring the Hebrew people to the edge of the Jordan River. At their head is Joshua. He will be the one to lead the people into the Promised Land. Moses could not be the one who brought the people into the promise of God. Moses is inextricably tied to the Law, and we know that the Law can save no one. Joshua (Yeshua, God Saves) would lead the people into the Promised Land. Jesus is the one who brings about the promise of God. (It has never been through the Law)

God caused the water of the Jordan River, which was at flood stage, to stand up in a heap so the people could walk across on dry land. This very thing would solidify in the hearts of the Hebrew people Joshua as their leader. Those who had been around forty years earlier and had not died in the wilderness remembered Moses leading through the Red Sea on dry land. Those who had previously followed Moses were now ready to follow Joshua. This is helpful for us as we consider how to think about the Law of Moses and Jesus as people of the New Covenant. Since Christ has come, the Law has been brought to nothing. The Law was a tutor and a guardian until Christ, the Promised One, would bring about the New Covenant of God. That which had previously had glory has now come to have no glory. Moses had been the leader; now Joshua was. The Law, like Moses, served its purpose and has been replaced by something better in Christ...

Now Joshua takes the lead of these desert-dwelling Hebrews. He is told multiple times to "be strong and courageous." We aren't given any unique insight into why he would need to be told this so often, but one may assume that having heard this from Moses and God did much to bolster the boldness of the new leader. In Joshua 1:8, we see that the Book of Law is not to depart from Joshua's mouth but that he should "meditate on it day and night." It reminds us of what the Psalmist says in the first Psalm but also makes us think of Deuteronomy 17. Moses, before death, gave the people specific instructions on what would happen should they ever set a king over themselves. One of those instructions was that the king should "write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. And he shall read it all the days of his life." ...

We are now nearing the final words of Moses to the people of Israel. Moses is 120 years old. He had been just forty when he went out and killed an Egyptian man. He had hidden for forty years before he returned to rescue God's people, and now he had labored over them for another forty years. Moses' strength was not abated, and his eyesight was not impaired. But he had sinned against God, and so he would not be allowed to enter the Promised Land. But there is more to it than that; Moses had come to represent the Law. His successor, Joshua (Yeshua), would represent the work of God in that his name is the same as our Savior's name and that the name itself means "God Saves." It is fitting to our story that the Law would not lead the people into rest and salvation but that Yeshua would lead them in. Again, we are faced with the shadow of the more beautiful thing. Christ has led us into salvation and rest...

As Deuteronomy wraps up, we see some interesting things in chapter 29. One of the most exciting points is found in verses 2-6.

"You have seen all the LORD did before your eyes, the great trials, the signs, and those wonders. But to this day, the LORD has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear."

In other words, though the Hebrews had seen God do amazing things, they still missed who he was. Their eyes were blinded, their ears were deaf, and their hearts were far from him. It isn't different from what we find in the New Testament when the people around him missed the amazing miracles of Jesus. Jesus tells his twelve disciples that the crowds had hearts that had grown dull, ears that could barely hear, and closed eyes. (Matthew 13: 14-15) Of course, they had to miss Jesus. If they had understood who Jesus was, they would have never crucified the King of Glory...

These two chapters should do more to bolster our joy in the gospel than probably any other text aside from the whole of Leviticus. The blessings and curses were to be pronounced by the people upon entering the Promised Land and were based entirely on performance. If we want to adopt the blessings as belonging to us in the 21st century, then we have to adopt the curses as belonging to us as well. The mistake we make is thinking we can do a decent enough job of the works of the Law to somehow merit God's grace and favor. However, the Scripture is clear that for any righteousness to be assigned to the individual under the Law of Moses, that individual must "Keep the whole commandment." Righteousness under the Law of Moses is only attainable: "If you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do ALL his commandments." It's dumfounding to me that some believe they can somehow accomplish the Law perfectly...

Make no mistake, God's faithfulness to his promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had nothing to do with the faithfulness of the Hebrew people, for they were rebellious from the day they left Egypt and maintained that course through the rest of the Bible. (notable exceptions excluded) This tells us more about God's nature than the nature of man. We aren't surprised that mankind is rebellious to God. We saw that on the third page of Scripture, we were reminded that mankind is only evil all the time before and after the flood. We have already noted how the Israelites grumbled against God before they left Egypt and then for the next forty years in the wilderness. We have seen God stirred to wrath for their disbelief, and we have already seen the Psalmist and Paul make clear for us that no one is righteous or good, not even one. But the fact God has carried these people for forty years despite their wickedness shows the faithfulness of God to his own promise. We are encouraged that if God would not reject these people based on his promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then neither shall we be forsaken who come before God on the greater promise that came to us through Jesus Christ...

The book of Deuteronomy begins on the first day of the eleventh month of the fortieth year. Moses will call the people together a few times and remind them of their journey through the wilderness, their sinfulness, God's faithfulness, and the instructions God set before them. At the end of this book, Moses will die. The best we can tell is that all but the last couple of verses cover about a month. In the final moments of Deuteronomy, the people will mourn for Moses for 30 days. It is helpful for us to keep in mind that this entire book is a series of farewell statements made by Moses before he died and the people moved into the Promised Land. I think it's hard for us to think of 34 chapters covering a mere thirty days when the first six chapters of Genesis covered 1656 years. Imagine this as a deathbed declaration, though Moses' strength was unabated and his vigor unimpaired...

Once again, we find that if we limit our understanding of Balaam to the narrative that holds the bulk of his story, we will come to an incomplete and, in this case, wrong conclusion. Aaron has died, and the people of God have wandered for thirty-nine and a half years in the wilderness. King Balak wants to put a curse on these Hebrews before they see him destroyed, and he hires Balaam to do the cursing.

Balaam seems almost holy and righteous as he insists he can only say what God directs him to say and subsequently blesses the people of God four separate times. Balak becomes more unhinged each time until he says, "I called you to curse my enemies and behold, you have blessed them these three times. I would have honored you, but the Lord has held you back from honor." Again, Balaam seems noble as he says, "If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own will. What the LORD speaks, that will I speak?"...
