We remember the Hebrews left Mt. Sinai in Numbers chapter 10 on the twentieth day of the second month in the second year after they departed from Egypt. Chapter twenty gives us the death of Aaron the High Priest, which does us little good in terms of a calendar or timeline if not for Numbers chapter 33 verses 38-39, where we learn that Aaron died on the first day of the fifth month in the fortieth year. That tells us that between the time the spies return from the Promised Land in chapter 13 and the death of Aaron in chapter 20, thirty-eight years have passed. This number is confirmed in Deuteronomy 2:14. Another way to think about this is that of the forty years the people wandered in the wilderness, the first year and three months take place from Exodus 12 through Numbers 13. Thirty-eight years pass between Numbers 14 and Numbers 20. Six months pass from Numbers 21-36, and two months time pass in the book of Deuteronomy. We only see two of the forty years in detail, while the rest are sped through with little more than a nod. The timeline isn't for everyone, so let's move on to something more substantial and more Christ-centered...

The four gospels of the New Testament give us four beautifully unique accounts of the life of Jesus. Exodus 2 is brought into crystal clear focus only when we add in Hebrews and the testimony of Stephen from Acts. And Numbers 13 is fleshed out by Deuteronomy 1:22-33. We would do well to remember the Scripture points forward to itself and backward on itself repeatedly....

The book of Numbers is a bit choppy at the outset since Numbers chapter one occurs exactly a month AFTER Numbers chapter 7. You'll notice in Numbers 7:1, "On the day when Moses finished setting up the tabernacle." We know that happened on the first day of the first month of the second year according to Exodus 40:17. We also know the priests began their consecration on (or near) that day. That means Exodus 40 and Numbers 7 occur on the same day, and possibly Leviticus 8. Numbers 1 begins on the first day of the SECOND month in the second year. (thus a month later than chapter 7)...

In Exodus 40, the tabernacle was set up for the first time on the first day of the first month of the second year. Moses immediately began the seven-day consecration process for the priests while also instructing the people in the laws relating to sacrifices. We know from the book of Numbers that the priests administered the Passover offering on the fourteenth day of the first month. We also understand that Nadab and Abihu were already dead when that happened. You may remember I mentioned the book of Leviticus covers between eight and fourteen days. Why am I giving you all this detail? Simply put, Nadab and Abihu offer an unauthorized fire on the altar either during their days of consecration or immediately after it. Either way, these two brand-new priests failed at the task before them and were consumed by the fire of the LORD. What hubris for Nadab and Abihu to think so highly of themselves and so lowly of God. They disregarded the commands of God and approached him with callousness...

The Leper is outside the camp, outside his tent even, while the priest is confined to the tent of meeting. The priest was anointed with the blood of the offering and with the oil on his right ear, thumb, and big toe. The leper was purified by applying blood to his right earlobe, thumb, and big toe. These two chapters are the only places this imagery occurs in the Bible...
