Title: The Five Jars

Author: M. R. James

Narrator: Roy Macready

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 13 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-20-16

Publisher: Spiders' House Audio

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7

Publisher's Summary:

M. R. James (1862-1936) was provost of King's College, Cambridge, and Eton College. He was a highly regarded scholar and academic but is today remembered for his ghost stories, which are considered among the finest in the genre. His short novel for children, The Five Jars, is a bewitching fairy tale in the form of a letter to a young friend, telling of the writer's strange experiences after discovering a box containing five jars with labels that indicate the mysterious powers of their contents.

Comic Sans? What?

Before I touch on anything else I'd like to state, up front, that if I had known the book was printed in Comic Sans I would not have bought it at any price. This is not a joke; the horrible font is a major distraction from the story. It was hard to believe my eyes, frankly. It may have been a full minute before I was able to actually accept the information they were trying to feed my protesting brain. Even now I find myself opening the book with the expectation that I have been mistaken, and the font is back to normal--no.

The illustrations are faded, 3rd-generation copies of low-resolution scans of the originals. They are, for instance, so poorly rendered as to obscure the words written on the scrolling ribbon across the jars on the frontispiece.

At $25, I feel taken advantage of by the publisher for the level of quality in printing and typography. None of the choices they've made are understandable and the result is a damned shame.

Forerunner to today's horror

While lacking the spookiness of his other work, The Five Jars is a good M.R. James story. It concerns a man who finds a magic plant, then a magic box, and then magic jars that allow him to see the other world of fairies, gnomes, and such. The jars are desired by those who should not have them. Part of the story lies in James' use of animal discussion and part in the fact that he doesn't feel the need to explain everything.

MR James has written some brilliant plots, but The Five Jars is a bit like an Alice in Wonderland gone wrong. It reads as though the author wanted to create as many strange, whacky things as possible and somehow squeeze them into the plot and at the same time, to continually surprise the reader. Ricardo Silverburn, children's author.

Four Stars

Magical, very entertaining.

Delightful story!

Intriguing and fun book. Makes you wish there was much more to it.

Join Oliver as he discovers these truths and what it looks like for him as he applies them to his daily life that he shares with this family and two odd and distinctly different dogs named Libby and Lola. This relatable character will win the hearts of children by inspiring and teaching the Biblical principles that we all are meant to know. Entertaining introduction to Christian doctrine.

Fun approach to teach children the Word and how to build a relationship with Christ.

An Engaging Story for Animal Lovers

Oliver hears the Word of God from his humans and applies it to his life.

The author and the narrator are both cat people and reflect God's love for His creation.

John and JoAnn Nash

Cute cat story

A very cute kitten story that kids will love! I received this audiobook at no cost from audiobook blast in exchange for an honest review. My daughter loved this book and was upset it finished. We will definitely look into other books from this author and subject! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to listen to your book! We thoroughly enjoyed listening about Oliver the Scripture cat!

An Adorable Story For Children

Oh my gosh, this was such a cute story. SCRIPTURE CAT was fun, and a great way of teaching children about God in a way they can relate to. Oliver was just so cute and I loved the part about him NOT getting declawed.

My kids recently retired out of the military and I have three grandchildren that will love this story. I can't wait for them to listen to it. I even enjoy listening to children's books myself. Meanwhile, my two cats listened with me. KELLY QUICKEL did a super job writing this.

JOY NASH'S performance was amazing. She has a wonderful voice that kids will naturally gravitate to. Her voice inflections were awesome!

Great books that teach inclusion

Sean Adelman does what no authors have done: he provides tween with books that shows kids that individuals with Down Syndrome have adventures, just like any other kid. Inclusion is part of the classroom & can be part of elementary school libraries too! We bought & donated multiple copies of these books & gave them to school libraries. I bought copies for my niece too! I highly recommend this book for kids from about 3rd through 6th grade.

Five Stars

Bought he series for my grandson. He loves them

A wonderful adventure.

It's always an adventure to find new friends and new things about yourself. Dr Adelman has done a great job of showing how a young girl begins to learn about herself, to start making decisions based on what she's learned and who she wants to become.

Great Second Edition to the Series!

I loved this book just as much as the first one! It has good detail with great descriptions. It was a great story for any age! (submitted by a 7th grade reader!)
