This is not The Book of The Unnamed Midwife

I was eager for this book to arrive after I pre-ordered it because of how impressed I was by "The Book of the Unnamed Midwife." Unfortunately, this book didn't live up to its prequel. Etta/Eddie is not very well developed; Elision's shot at a character grappling with their gender identity is neither believable nor compelling. The book reads like fan fiction of the original novel.

The narration isn't much better. Ojo struggles with even the most basic of accents.

I wouldn't recommend this title to anyone seeking to replicate their experience with the first book of the series.

Good story. Terrible Performance.

Terrible narrator. The reader mispronounces simple words like peripheral...saying instead periphreal. Her accents and voices detracted rather than enhanced the story. I suffered through the whole book because the story is interesting. But I would never get another book read by this lady. I will just buy the book and read it myself if she is the only reader available. Periphreal? Really? A professional reader who cannot even pronounce words correctly? Can't believe they let it hit the market. Ruined a good story. The first book in this series had a good narrator.

I'm so let down

The Unnamed Midwife was really interesting and unique. It provided an amazing potential for a sequel, but this did not measure up. The main character is androgynous and dresses as a man for survival purposes when he leaves his village which the protagonist did in the first book since there are few women left on earth. I couldn't get enough of the first book and highly recommend it, but this one took forever to finish and unfortunately felt like an item on my to-do list. To simplify, the first book was "WOW!" and this book was just "MEH..." Read the first and skip this one. Trust me.

Thin story

Does not compare to the original story. I was disappointed at the main heroine and her "struggles' in her sexuality and identity. I would not recommend his book

Almost Gets It, But Not Quite

I agree with other reviewers who were disappointed in this book after being wowed by the first. It was still a worthy effort and came very close to the first, but dropped a couple of things.

Don't give up on the book because of the monotone

When you first start listening to this book, you will probably want to stop listening in the first half hour because of the monotone narration; don't. If you persevere, you'll realize that the monotone is the natrator's way of expressing the protagonist's mental state at the start of the story. As the protagonist's life gets progressively more interesting, the narration really comes alive.

The story itself is an entertaining, if somewhat formulaic, example of the current style of military sci-fi, with brief bits of prose that hint at what this author may become. I am looking forward to watching this writer polish their chops as time goes on.

Good scifi.

Multiple points of interest. Avoids the miopic scope of so many other scifi audios. There is a whole Galaxy of moving parts here, and they are polished and interesting.

Really ballsy, having a fat protagonist. good dialogue with minor funnies.

The real star is the Mech combat. the caspers are cool. The other mech, the bigger ones, are goosebump inducing.

Their interface has a very warhammer 40k sort of interfacing with a God machine type of goosebumpy vibe.

Anyway, it's good, if you are wondering if it is worth your time, it is. I give it an A. (omg that final battle, good stuff.)

What made the experience of listening to Cartwright's Cavaliers the most enjoyable?

I am a fat guy and the difficulties and how his mind keeps going back to his weight problem and the feelings around it are very well done. Especially the fact that even after he starts working out and trying to lose weight seriously little changes. That is so realistic.

What did you like best about this story?

The modern references like the shout, "Leroy Jenkins!"

I really recommend this book if you like any sort of science fiction mech combat books. I grew up reading mechwarrior so Im a bit biased.

Absolutley loved the entire Poison Study series!

Especaially this concluding book! I read the first three books, and listened to the last two. Now I wish i had the books to look back at! However, the narrator was amazing and I loved "hearing" Valek's voice and personality.

I loved everything about Dawn Study except that I thought it was too short! One thousand pages would be to short for me. LOL! Good book a little hard to follow

This book was hard to follow. A lot of jumping around with little or no background as to what actually happened. You jump right in after the event has happened. I did like the book but really had to go back and listen to a few chapters, thinking I missed something. Dukes narration was a little choppier than usual. Overall enjoyed it after the storyline started coming together.

I'm already going crazy waiting for the next book!

This is a great start yo the series set in the same continuity as the going home series. The story really draws you in and you can identify with the characters.

I couldn't finish it. I found it to be very boring and slow. I think a lot of it has to do with the narrator. It wasn't that he was horrible but he sounded like he was at the library reading to children or even a teacher reading to their class. I do not recommend this book.

Not nearly as good as "Home" series

This is supposed to be book 1 but it starts in the middle of the story. Apparently there is a novella that has the actual beginning. So it assumes you know who the characters are with no background being given. And the narrator makes no effort to do a woman's voice for the character Charlie which made it more confusing. He uses the same voice for both main characters. They start the story a few days after the EMP but you don't know how the group came together. Pretty disappointing. compared to the author's other books.

Usual LitRPG book, but interesting

Patch 17 does not stand out in the LitRPG genre. The genre is fairly new and many books are falling into the trope where the MMO locks the players in permanently and either kills them or puts the person's body into a coma. This is one such tale. It is an easy driving force for the story. Without it the story would need a compelling reason for the characters to stay in the game. Patch 17 also goes for the trope where most of the special and unique things happen to the MC.

It's not a bad book, and it is interesting, but the story really goes nowhere. The MC does have an end goal, but it's rather flimsy and vague, he'll get there eventually. But before that he has to level up. So off questing he goes.

There are a few other negatives to the book. Firstly, as you'll hear it throughout the book, the character and item stats readouts are awful and awkward. In the kindle version it's neatly laid out with a nice readable format, audible, not so much. Secondly, there are some character transitions where the jump cut is very quick and brief with hardly a pause. It can be a little confusing. Third, there are a couple NPC backstories that the MC has a vision of. They tend to be absurdly long and have little to no impact on the story going forward. Lastly, the book just ends without any kind of resolution to anything.

Despite all of this I will be getting the next book. I'm a sucker for the LitRPG genre especially when all the special events happen to the MC.

The narrator does little to differentiate between characters. Hard to tell when the perspective changes. Makes it hard to follow and keep track of the conversations.

I RCW keeps writing for years to come

I discovered Robert Charles Wilson some 25 years ago and have read all his books--I started with Memory Wire (loved it). It's a pity his earlier books aren't on audio. Some of his books I like and some I love, but he's about the only author (in any genre) who I can count on to at least deliver a book I enjoy, and when you read/listen to about 300 books a year, this is a pretty big deal.

This one I liked. It has his usual melancholy tone, characters fully developed, plot about more than action/adventure--though there is always that. He's always thinking deeply about something in his writing (technology, social issues, psychological issues, etc.) and then builds a story around it.

I appreciate that a piece of the story is always about a relationship--which is NEVER something stupid like insta-love and uses none of the horrible romance tropes.

Ok, I'm now going to listen to Bridge of Years, which I read in 1991 or so when it first came out. I recall liking that one very much...

Great Action in a Time Travel Story

Its ironic that what is probably the least likely of science fiction tropes, time travel, also offers some of the richest possibilities in the genre, with the possible exception of alternate history, which runs along the same lines but can only go one direction.

Robert Charles Wilson has created in this latest book a future universe in which time travel to the past has become possible, though the source of this boon is mysterious and debated. Some believe the mirror-like path to the past was created by a combination of academic and industrial knowhow. Others suspect that humans from the far future brought the technology with them and those future humans are now captives in Area 51.

In any case, the window is now in the hands of a corporation which runs Futurity City. The corporation profits in multiple ways. People from the current timeline can pay a hefty fee to travel back to the past to spend time there.

Scott is still boring

It was a good book but Scott Brick is still very boring compared to Euen Morton from the kilo 5 trilogy.

The worst thing about this book is not knowing when the next will come out. it will certainly be a relisten.

More Scott Brick....

title says it all. I am really not a fan of Scott Brick's performance, all his characters sound the same. He is nowhere close to the worst, but I wish these halo books would branch out to other narrators again.

A damn good Gap filler

short and sweet I just want to say that this book not only explained a lot of missing things with both Halo Wars and with the newer Halo series with four and five but it connected the two finally and further got me hyped for a future title that my return to a Halo game with more of a Halo feel and that is ultimately what everybody wants whether they know it or not. Thanks Audible and thank you to everyone else that helped make this happen!

Crazy

This is an amazing story and great warm up to halo wars 2. The story is actually engaging and keeps you wanting more. Performance could be better.

Another good book

It was like you're there. I enjoyed book 2 as much as book 1. looking forward to book 3.

The action is fast and furious. This is one terrific story and I cannot wait to read more!

A disappointment

The first book in the series was not. Ad at all and I enjoyed listening to that. But this one? It's like a bad mix between "Starship Troopers", "Aliens" and some juvenile horror story. And only the bad parts. How could Arenson manage to destroy the believable story from the first book? It's like a bad movie where they cover a weak story by using too many special effects. A disappointment!

Hidden gems

This series is a great surprise. Love the characters and the action is not predictable.

Fun but a bit juvenile

I enjoyed this and the first one but it lacked depth. Beast was a predictable character and Captain Petty was underdeveloped. Ill listen to another for fun but Atlas Shrugged its not

I'm really glad that I didn't listen to a lot of the reviews on this series. I really don't know what people are thinking I guess Everyone's entitled to their opinion even if they're wrong!

I love the story the characters overall it was just a very fun ride ! I thought the narrator didn't awesome job and now that I've discovered him I will be looking for more books that he's narrated.

An improvement over Book 3

Glynn mixed the characters up in this book which made the novel less predictable and more interesting. The introduction of several new first tier characters also improved the story; although, the new teenager seemed more like a literary device created merely to assist in his subterfuge rather than any other meaningful role, at least as far as this book used her.

The narration is still very good, however, I'm still not pleased with the tone and inflection of Damien's voice making him sound too self-important, all the time.

Even so, a nice addition to the series.

Behind the OODA Loop

I've been having loads of fun with this series. very original concepts, good prose, solid characters. That said, and I'll try to do this without spoilers, our protagonists spend much of this book suffering from a sudden case of plot-induced stupid.

Damien does have an endearing knack for finding problems by obliviously whacking his sad little face into the sticky bits, and yes, it's entertaining to see him creatively wizard everything into submission (or pieces) once he catches on, but I thought he'd picked up at least a little guile in his last few years. He issues several of his trademark ultimatums here, where he might have otherwise employed his wits and knowledge to make threats that would use the opponent's priorities to make compliance, negotiation, or further explanation of the opponents' opinion more attractive than the course they did choose. Our protagonists seriously need to quit reacting sometimes, and try to proactively screw with opponents' ye olde OODA loops.

I love a good conspiracy, but some of the secret plots and criminal organizations in this universe are just getting unreasonably competent for their size. Their funding and motives are plausible, but the scale of the things kept secret over this book and the last seem to imply a future that lacks Snowdens and Clintons. (Too soon?)

This is, nevertheless, absolutely worth a read, and the Starship Mageoverse continues to develop in interesting directions without a hint of staleness.

Better and Better

Each story in this series just gets more exciting and challenging.
