interesting 1st half

I like the fact that Audible is recording some obscure titles like this one. I picked it up at a 2nd hand store cause it looked odd and then it popped up on the site. I like to take a chance on non main stream writers now and then.

That being said: I like the first half or so the most. The society of the "plague years" is interesting, and there is an element of PKD type paranoia and conspiracy and "what is real?". There is also a hint of Clarke's Childhood's End in where humanity might be headed. and there is a dash of Bester's Demolished Man and esp. However I think where the novel could have gone is more interesting ultimately.

SPOILER: the 2nd half or at least last 1/3 devolves into a pulp scifi type capture-escape-capture-escape scenario that gets repetitive and ends suddenly in a Star Wars type attack on an orbiting space station that threatens Earth. I think the removal of the alien story line, concentration on the plague and how it affects humanity and the confusion over "reality" and maybe the conspiracy angle and the societal adjustments to an altered humanity would have made for a far more compelling novel that might have become a classic. I almost wish I had stopped the novel near the middle, about where the Paris episode is, and imagined the rest for myself.

Keep hoping Bester's Demolished Man and Stars My Destination will show up on Audible. 2 of the best all time.

Good Book..................................Lots of little bugga's eating anyone or anything (alive), that they can get too. A good read and IReally wish that we didn't have to write so many words, as this is reducndant and not necessary.

New Pulp Sci-Fi Horror

The book was offered to the Ministry of Zombies in exchange for a review.

OK â take a sci-fi creature feature from the 1950s, blend in some blood-curdling Clive Barker stuff & a twist of the bizarre & you end up with this new book from one of the crown prince of British indie horror Adam Millard.

Itâs not a long book â around 100 pages. It flows well from start to finish as one neat package.

The story is a clear pastiche. Natural disaster in LA brings something to the surface that should never have seen the light of day. If you are afraid of creepy crawlies, you will love it. If you are scared of clowns then things are about to get much worse!

I love bizarro-horror & this title fits squarely in this niche. The plot is cliché, hell even the characters are cliché but thatâs the way itâs meant to be. Throw in a waxworks & a director crying âCut!â & it the perfect twisted slice of comedy-horror.

I would also add, this is well written stuff. Pulp story does not mean pulp book. I had the paperback & it was a nicely put together volume. As for the story, it was tight & well-edited.

Recommended for any lovers of creature features.

Creepy, disturbing, and cool!!

I'll be honest and say I had not read a lot of this author's work before picking up this one. I may be checking out more now though. Skinners was awesome. It's a FUN read that you will burn through at the speed of light because it's so well written and engaging. If you enjoy fun and scary books, you don't want to pass this one by.

Less cursing, more style

Good ending, but that was the best part of the book. I chose this book for its rating and was disappointed. Premise was good but more time was spent choosing the next expletive phrase than in developing the story's elements, in my opinion. Words should paint a picture and evoke emotions. Also, there were some glaring errors of fact.

Unique Take on Supernatural

'Irony' by Marantha D. Jenelle is a unique and strange take on supernatural beings.

I've never read anything like this, as a result it took a bit longer for me to fully engage with the book. However, it did keep me hooked until the end.

Its a great story-line and one everyone should check out.

The types of characters are fantastic, all the different were creatures she's envisioned.

I would definitely recommend it.

Not worth the time.

Not my choice for sci fi. Lost intrest one chapter in. Basic premis is confusing and charcters not very intresting unless you like all the mental introspection and self obsession. Not worth the time to read and find out it is a waste of time.

Cybersona: A Book You and Your Kids Can Talk About

This latest offering by the imaginative author Fred Yager is a terrific yarn that is certain to entertain young adults aged 13 and older and their parents as well. From the start, when a young protagonist becomes horrifyingly entrapped within the pixilated universe of a computer game, it moves boundlessly forward through a series of nifty plot turns that produce more than just a few surprises. What's special is that one is also confronted with ideas that make one wonder and issues that make one think.

Related in a vernacular that is sure to appeal to young men, it also taps into their energy and singular resourcefullness, always treating them seriously. As a father of two energetic teenagers, it's clear where Yager's inspiration comes from. It's the kind of book that will make reading a treat for sons and daughters and, when parents read it too, much food for conversation between parents and their youngsters.

The less said about the plot the better for your entertainment. You're in for a wild ride!

great for gamers!

Answers the question of what it would be like to live your favorite video game, with dramatic twists and turns that explore darker themes than the reader might expect at first. But it all contributes to the overall mood of the book, which only serves to draw the reader in further on the journey to the happy ending Garland deserves. Definitely a book for older children, but one they'll enjoy nevertheless. Great way to get book-phobic gamers more interested in reading, too!

Read It for Tricky Dick

In the future of this 2002 work, the vast corporate giant DisLex, provider of entertainment and utilities and some government services, and its psychopathic CEO, Harman Jacques, not only round up victims of the Human Mutational Virus (HMV) and put them in de facto work camps but have also developed a vast, miniaturized simulacra of the world. In this PerfectTown, duplicated living and historical personages, the imagoes of the title, exist including Harman and his secret assistant, a little side project in complex personality simulation - one Richard M. Nixon, Harman's personal hero.

I feared, initially, that we were in the world of implausibly rationalized fable and another tired tract on the evils of the white man and his power structure. After all, HMV is a biologically improbable disease which renders most of its victims human-animal chimeras or, in rare cases, clown-like figures complete with huge noses. Also, Casil is not the most consistent in the prophylactic measures needed to prevent infections. These "freaks" are seemingly not only inspired by early fears of AIDS victims but are stand-ins for all kinds of social outsiders. And they are oppressed by white, powerful Harman. And Harman has a bizarre, creepy plan to infect his new assistant, Julie Curtez, with the disease. Her and hubsand Frank, who, as a district attorney, is trying to nail DisLex on drug trafficking charges, look suited to be our non-white heroes.

And the fantastic trappings aren't that new either. Communities simulated for nefarious ends go back to at least Frederik Pohl's "Tunnel Under the World" and Andrew D. Weiner's "The News from D Street". Simulacra of historical personalities go back to at least Philip K. Dick'sWe Can Build Youand were popular in the 1980s with Robert Silverberg's shared world Time Gate. And the logic of how these characters interact with their cyber environment is even shakier than that series.

brilliant!

A page turning criticism of extreme views be they religious or science based. interesting characters in a dystopian world not that dissimilar to now.

ermm not very good not very bad

This didn't work for me, I felt disconnected from the character, and couldn't really care what happened to them, the world created for them seem too far fetched for me and the main characters switch from one county top another only seemed to confirm this. The sub plot didn't seem to have any point or added anything to the book, I was overall disappointed, though for a daily deal probably got my moneys worth.

Brilliant story, brilliantly read too.

With the way the writer weaved this story and how it was all so brilliantly interconnected and the many themes he explored and the fantastic narrator and his brilliant range of voices and accents I became totally hooked and eager for more.

The dream sequences, virtual reality worlds, program driven servicing of mans sexual desire, exploration of what is humanity and morality, and self awareness. The fact it deals with ethnic cleansing, and bigotry, and the extremes and sometimes violent expressions of prejudice in religion, and also secular society is both shocking, revealing, and thought provoking. Especially so considering things that are still happening today. Some of the twists are striking especially the recounting of the prostitute which is shocking and touching.

A big pat on the back for Chris Becket for creating a brilliant and engrossing vehicle for all those themes, that have always been around and probably always will be. Definitely a faves author folder now!

The choice to have John Banks narrate was pure genius. he really brought this tale to life and felt totally immersed in this tale.

Huge range of voices, all exceptionally well done. Loved every minute.

I really enjoyed this. It was a good, solid story with some interesting ruminations on the nature of self awareness and intelligence. This was the first book I've read by Chris Beckett but it won't be the last.

Religion can be used as a way for one twisted, controlling individual to manipulate a group of malleable people. In this futuristic, yet easily realistic, story that is exactly what happens.

Zel is an autistic who relies on a virtual system named Pandora to understand others' emotions. When she joins the Wiki-religion, as a way to escape the man chasing her, her access to Pandora is cut off and she has to rely on her own incorrect perceptions of people. Soon after entering the Wiki-religion, she encounters Sigh. Sigh has deceived and stolen a computer from a couple of street thugs. She runs up to Zel and hold her hand as if they're mother-daughter. That one interaction joins them for the remainder of the story.

The Wiki-religion is all about peace and doing what's good and right. Sigh realizes that the Wiki-religion is essentially mind-controlling its members. In one instance, Zel's instincts warn her to fight, but the Wiki-religion kept distorting her vision of the dangerous man into a man who was sincerely looking for his aunt. This mistake cost her a lot ... but it also helped her to realize what the religion was actually doing.

Action-packed, this book will keep you on your toes and keep your interest throughout ... so much so that you don't realize you're reading almost 400 pages. If you're a fan of a slightly futuristic sci-fi novel, then you would enjoy this series.

The Godhead Machine

Zel Aurora is back and this time she is pulled into the global expansion of the cult-like Wiki-religion, the conspiracy surrounding it, and struggling to get free of its hold. Though a few familiar characters return from the first book in this series, this book also introduces a host of new characters and it took me a while to get into it and get everyone sorted out, but once that happened it was great. I loved Zel's two new allies: the little orphan girl, Sigh, and the celebrity, Nari. And I thought the mystery surrounding the reappearance of Sasha, from the first book, was fascinating. I look forward to reading the last book in this trilogy, Neochrome Aurora (expected out early 2013).
